MIKE’S NOTES 11
Sometimes just hearing a show’s title is enough to make people smile—and Seven Brides for Seven
Brothers is one of those shows.
Originally a 1954 MGM film musical with music by Saul Chaplin and Gene de Paul and lyrics by
Johnny Mercer, Seven Brides was filmed “entirely in CinemaScope!” and based on The Sobbin’
Women by Stephen Vincent Benét. On the surface, the slender book is an unlikely, almost lunatic
source material for a musical: Our scruffy heroine Milly ends up caring for a bunch of rough, slobby
mountain brothers after she, on a whim, marries the eldest brother—who then, pleased with having
a bride, talks his six other brothers into going into town to steal theirs!
Yet against the odds, the film has an undeniable, winning charm, and for generations, it has
spoken directly to people’s hearts. Director Stanley Donen managed to find gentleness and truth
underneath all the mountain dirt, portraying each character as either suffering from, or struggling
to break through, their own loneliness. Add some gorgeous music and some history-making
dance routines, and you have a surprise hit. The film received a warm reception from critics and
audiences alike, with The New York Times writing that it was “a wholly engaging, bouncy, tuneful
and panchromatic package.”
The first stage adaption of Seven Brides was a U.S. national tour that played The Muny in 1978.
It had a book by Lawrence Kasha and David Landay; music by Gene de Paul, Al Kasha and Joel
Hirschorn; and lyrics by Johnny Mercer, Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn. The next national tour was in
1981 and it eventually opened on Broadway—but this time, The New York Times was not so nice. In
fact, its review was so damning, the cast marched down Broadway and picketed the Times offices.
The show’s appeal easily withstood the temporary hit, and Seven Brides has been produced around
the world many times since. Tonight marks The Muny’s sixth production, following one in 2011.
To me, Seven Brides is a quintessential–maybe the quintessential–film and stage musical, capable
of beating down all your logical defenses with its style, joy and spirit. There is a certain type of
musical that, for all its lunacy, somehow manages to bypass rational analysis and move straight
to the human heart. (Catch the brilliant streaming series Schmigadoon if you want to see this idea
both lacerated and celebrated.) Great, true love stories are hard to create, and the story of Milly and
Adam is a classic success. Their journey to love is rocky and complicated. They have to reach deep
inside to find patience and trust. And in the end, they give each other one of most powerful gifts of
all: forgiveness.
To create tonight’s production, we’ve reunited many of the team members who did brilliant work on
our 2019 production of Paint Your Wagon, including director choreographer Josh Rhodes, associate
director choreographer Lee Wilkins, set designer Michael Schweikardt, costume designer Amy Clark,
video designer Caite Hevner and music supervisor Sinai Tabak. Also
joining us in this now three-year journey is the original co-book
writer, David Landay, who has had time to give the script a few
tweaks and tucks.
So I welcome you to an evening that I hope will do exactly what it sets
out to do: make you smile in spite of yourself.
