LEARNING SUMMARY

After understanding the text above, can you see why the writer tells the issue?
Now you know that you have just listened to an analytical exposition text.

Can you write this kind of text effectively? Learn this text more through
challenging tasks.

The main purpose of the text is to convince the readers or listeners that
smoking is not good for health. Here the writer states some arguments to support
the thesis that smoking is not good for health. This text is called as an analytical
exposition text.

An analytical exposition is a type of spoken or written text that is intended to
persuade the listeners or readers that something is the case. To make the persuasion
stronger, the speaker or writer gives some arguments as the fundamental reasons

aBahasa Inggris Kelas XIuntuk SMA/MA 57

why something is the case. This type of text can be found in scientific books,
journals, magazines, newspaper articles, academic speech or lectures, research,
report etc. Analytical expositions are popular among science, academic community

The generic structures of analytical expositionare:
1) Thesis: Introduces the topic and shows speaker or writer’s position;

Cheating : Academic Misconduct

Students are aware that cheating is againts the rules, but many of them still do it
on the basis that it does not really harm anyone. They are not aware of
seriousness and wrongfulness of the act. Firstly, cheating is an act of injustice to
honest students who work hard for the same scores that the cheaters achieve
through deception. Secondly, cheating undermines the trust in the school if people
find out about the act. More importantly, this act of academic dishonesty distorts
the mission of education. Education is not about understanding theories or getting
perfect scores, and those who perceive it as such cheat themselves of education.
Cheating is a serious form of academic misconduct. It’s time that we stop seeing it
as little worse than a white lie.

Advantages of Mobile Phones at School for Students

Technology is playing a major and important role in our
lives. In modern society, nearly everyone has a mobile device.
Being able to access to mobile technology can be both a
blessing and a curse, especially for students. While many
schools ban their students from bringing mobile phones into
school or classroom due to its distraction potential, but there
are also many positive effects that can be obtained from using mobile phones at
school wisely.
First, mobile phones are not just phones. Most modern phones nowadays
come with many features. They can provide students with electronic dictionaries,
maps, magazines, reference books, drawing tools, and scientific and musical
instrument through applications. Besides, the availability of internet access on their
phones makes students can access the internet as massive online education
resources effortlessly.
Secondly, mobile phones can encourage digital literacy development among
students. It is now an essential skill in higher education and in the future
workplace. A report on the most important skills in the workplace in 2030 by The
Foundation for Young Australians predicted that early-career jobs like teacher or
pharmacy assistant would spend on average ten hours more per week on tasks
that require digital skills. The analysis which involved 4.2 million job ads revealed
that since 2012 the demand for digital skill has significantly increased by more than
200 percent.
Thirdly, mobile phones can be used to improve students’ engagement in
learning. We know that the learning process will be effective when the leaners are
interested in or at the very least find any relevance about what they learn with
their lives. A neuroscientist, Mary Immordino-Yang states that thinking deeply
about something that we do not care about is literally neurobiologically impossible.
If teachers want students to genuinely learn in school then they need to connect
students with the things they think are important. Involving technology such as
mobile phones as an instrument in teaching and learning process will certainly
boost the learners’ engagement.
In addition, the phone is not the real problem that leads to low scores. A
study published by The Centre for Economic Performance on student phone access
and the achievement gap showed that phone bans at school have very different
effects on different types on students. The study found that banning mobile
phones improves outcomes for low-achieving students, but has no significant
impact on high achievers. Low-achieving students are more likely to be distracted
by the presence of mobile phone, while high achievers can focus in classroom
regardless of whether phones are present or not.

In conclusion, I believe that mobile phones can be a useful learning tool if
their use at school or in class is properly structured. They can help students to
access digital resources for educational purposes, develop digital literacy among
students, and also boost students’ engagement in teaching and learning process.

Conventionally, students need books, pens,

erasers, picture books, rulers and other items. In the
multimedia era, students need to be successful in their
studies. They need a laptop connected to the internet
to enlarge their knowledge. Of course, it will cost
more, but its usage will be worth it.

First of all, modern schools tend to apply rapid

Having a laptop on every student’s desk will help the students to understand the
subjects, by searching for additional information through the internet.
Secondly, finding the right laptop is not difficult. Nowadays, there are various
online laptop stores that sell at various prices. Students just have to look around the
online store. Deciding which laptop or computer they need and proceed to deal with

Why Books Are Important for Us?

A wise man once said, “Learning without book
mean nothing.’ In my opinion this statement is true.
Why do I say that? This is for several reasons.

Firstly, books are important because they
develop the minds of people who read them. Even if
you don’t agree with what an author has done in a
book, you can at least have formed your own ideas
on what would have been better. This leads to
critical thinking skills. These critical thinking skills
are a necessity for the development of cultures.

Secondly, book contains so much more than just the story. They record facts.
They review history. Books are the documentations of themes that relate to
everyone. You can even learn about a period in history just looking at what books
were popular and published during that time. For instance, the classic tales of two
cities by Charles dickens is set in the French revolution era.

The last thing I’ll say is that books are essential to life because they do not only
carry knowledge, but they also entertain us. They entertain us with stories ranging
from mystery and drama to comedy, adventures and autobiographies. In other word,
you can read book about anything. These possibilities are limitless and that is one of
many lessons you can learn from reading books.

Based on the reason listed above, it is obvious that books have a great
influence in our lives. Without book we may learn nothing.

School Uniform, Another Good Lesson

School uniform is special clothes worn by all
students of a particular school. The uniform of a school
may differ from others. Why should schools use
uniforms? Below are some reasons.

First of all, Notre Dame’s Department of Sociology
produced a study in 1998 concerning school uniforms.
Their findings using 10th grade students showed that
uniforms have no direct effect on “substance abuse, behavioral problems or
attendance.” It also claimed a negative effect on student achievements for those
students considered ‘pro-school’.

Secondly, uniform helps to create a strong sense ,school ethos and a sense of
belonging to a particular community. As such it promotes discipline and helps to
drive up academic standards, which is why a uniform is often adopted by schools

66 Blossom English Supplementary Book

which are being reopened with a fresh start after being classified as failing.
Finally, uniform acts as a social leveler, under which all students are equal in

the eyes of the school and of each other. In institutions without uniform students are
often competitive and worry endlessly about their appearance and the clothes they
should wear. Pupils without expensive designer clothes and trainers may be singled
out as social outcasts, or stigmatized as being from poor backgrounds.

For these reasons, many parents prefer uniforms as they save them money on
buying clothes for school wear. Considering the findings, schools should implement
the uniform as their identity. The government should also publish some kinds of rule
which make uniform compulsory for schools.

8. What is the text about?
A. The school rules.
B. The importance of school uniform
C. The school identity
D. The equally among students
E. What we should wear at school

9. In institutions without uniform students, one will be regarded poor because
he/she ……
A. does not wear a school uniform
B. posses a bad academic record
C. cannot afford to buy a school uniform
D. has a bad attitude at school
E. wears no expensive designer clothes

10. “As such it promotes discipline and helps to drive up academic standards ………..”
(Paragraph 3).

A. The writer’s suggestion
B. The writer’s general statement

Consequences of Cheating

Cheating is a bad habit that must be avoided by
students. There are no benefits that students get by
cheating. It only makes them lazy.

Cheating has a few consequences in both short
and long terms. In the short term, it means that the
learning process, is useless. Maybe you will feel safe
because you do not get caught by your teacher. Then
you will feel amazing when you get good grades without studying. But it is not
such a good method. Actually, you are wasting your time and your money trying to
“learn” by cheating. If you get caught, you will be in trouble because you can be
expelled from school or university. In addition, you will get a zero on your test and
a bad reputation with the teachers and the other students. In the long term, you
may graduate from school or university by cheating, but when you are asked to
use your knowledge at work, you can not solve your problems, give ideas, or be
useful in a meeting because you did not learn much at university.

E-Mail

E-mail certainly keeps me busy. I never used to write
as many letters as I do now. In the good old days before
_______________(11), we wrote real letters, with paper and
envelopes. I wrote one or two letters a week. But now, with e-
mail, my in-box is never empty. There’s always someone
_____________(12) me. I would like just one day where I’m
free of e-mail. The sad thing is, very few mails I get are
_____________(13). I get loads of spam – junk mail trying to
sell me things I don’t want. I also get lots of mail from
____________(14) asking me to do stuff. Do this, do that, reply ASAP. It’s too much
sometimes. The one good thing about e-mail is that you can get things done
________.(15) I can e-mail a company in another country and they can mail me
back in two minutes.

LEARNING SUMMARY

Real letter vs e-mail
Personal letters, also known as friendly letters, and social notes normally have five
parts.

aBahasa Inggris Kelas XIuntuk SMA/MA 91
91

1. The Heading. This includes the address, line by line, with the last line being the
date. Skip a line after the heading. The heading is indented to the middle of the
page. If using preaddressed stationery, add just the date.

2. The Greeting. The greeting always ends with a comma. The greeting may be
formal, beginning with the word "dear" and using the person's given name or
relationship, or it may be informal if appropriate.
Formal : Dear Uncle Jim, Dear Mr. Wilkins,
Informal : Hi Joe, Greetings,
(Occasionally very personal greetings may end with an exclamation point for
emphasis.)

3. The body. Also known as the main text. This includes the message you want to
write. Normally in a friendly letter, the beginning of paragraphs is indented. If
not indented, be sure to skip a space between paragraphs. Skip a line after the
greeting and before the close.

4. The complimentary close. This short expression is always a few words on a
single line. It ends in a comma. It should be indented to the same column as the
heading. Skip one to three spaces (two is usual) for the signature line.

5. The signature line. Type or print your name. The handwritten signature goes
above this line and below the close. The signature line and the handwritten
signature are indented to the same column as the close. The signature should be
written in blue or black ink. If the letter is quite informal, you may omit the
signature line as long as you sign the letter.

Postscript. If your letter contains a postscript, begin it with P.S. and end it with
your initials. Skip a line after the signature line to begin the postscript.

Dear Search Committee Chair,

I am writing this letter for Mrs. Hana Stanza who has applied for a position in your
organization. I should start by saying that I cannot recommend him too highly.
In fact, there is no other student with whom I can adequately compare him, and I
am sure that the amount of mathematic he knows will surprise you.
His dissertation is the sort of work you don't expect to see these days. It definitely
demonstrates his complete capabilities.

In closing, let me say that you will be fortunate if you can get him to work for you.

Sincerely,
Michael Peter

COMPETENCE TEST

Read the text and choose the best answer for its question.
Dear Jonny,
Hello! How are you? I received your letter today. I am very excited to hear that
you are coming to stay with me for the holidays. I am sure we will have a lot of
fun together.
My parents have agreed to let you stay with me. They offered to pick you up at
the airport. All you have to do is to tell us when you are coming.
I will now tell you about some of the things you will experience here in
Indonesia. You do not have to worry about the local spicy food. We have a lot
of fast food restaurants here like the ones you have in England.
You can also shop for souvenirs to bring home. Sarinah or Blok M are our
famous shopping areas. They have many shops selling all kinds of things. I am
sure you will love them.
I am also planning to take you to a few tourist spots like miniature of
Indonesia, National monument, or Safari Garden. We can also go to the Ancol
beach where you can swim, play on the beach, and have picnics.
My family and I are looking forward to your coming. I hope to hear from you
soon. Good bye.
With love.
Nadim
