LEARNING SUMMARY

What is explanation text?
Explanation text is akind of text which is more complex than instructions. It is
usually used to explain processes or sequences of activity. The meaning of a text is
why or how.
For examples:
Why do things happen?
o Why did we go to war in 1939?
o Why does the moon seem to change shape?
o Why do we pay tax?
o Why was there an earthquake in Haiti?

How do things work?
 How does a plane fly?
 How does a car engine work?
 How does a pigeon find its way home?
 How do you fly a hot air balloon?

Purpose: to explain the processes involved in natural and social
phenomena, or to explain how something works.

Generic Structures
1) General statement to introduce the topic

It describes or identifies the phenomenon.
2) A sequence of explanations of why or how something occurs

They tell how or why the feature or process changes.
Words should show cause and effect or time.
3) Closing /Concluding Statement (Optional)
It sums up the explanation and talks about its application; may also give

The Life Cycle of a Butterfly Pictures

No. Paragraphs
The life of a butterfly is divided into four

1 stages: egg, larva, pupa and butterfly. The
four stages are called the life cycle of the
butterfly

A butterfly begins life as an egg. Most eggs A
2 are laid on the leaves of plants. They can be
B
round, oval or even cylindrical in shape C
depending on the type of butterfly that laid
them

Inside the egg is a larva, which is known as a
3 caterpillar. When it is ready, the larva hatches

and eats the leaf its egg was laid on. It then
continues eating for most of its short life. The
larva's skin cannot stretch as it grows, so it
keeps shedding its skin and growing a new
one.

128 Blossom English Supplementary Book

When it has finished growing, the larva turns
itself into a pupa, which is also called a
4 chrysalis. The pupa is like a case to enclose
the larva while it changes itself into a butterfly.
The larva does not eat while it is in the pupa,
but it gradually changes its body and grows
wings.

D

Finally, when it is ready, an adult butterfly

5 emerges from the pupa. At first its wings are
soft because they have been folded up inside
the pupa, but after it has rested, the butterfly

pumps blood through them so that it is ready
to fly.
E

The butterfly then goes looking for a mate and lays its eggs on a leaf so that the
whole cycle can begin again

How the Body Reacts to Heat

When the human body is exposed to very hot conditions one result can be
heatstroke. This is often the case for athletes and people who have to work outside
in summer.Heatstroke is a sudden, uncontrolled rise in body temperature. It is a
reaction that is a result from not being able to replace fluid lost-through perspiration.
If the lost fluids are not replaced then dehydration occurs and this leads to a
decrease in blood.

In this situation the body must decide whether to give the blood to the main
organs (livers, kidneys, and so on) or to the skin. Because the main organs are more
important, they will receive the blood. Also, as a consequence of the drop in fluids,
the body loses its ability to sweat. The situation becomes critical. The body now can’t
produce sweat; therefore, it can’t cool itself. Excess heat can’t be released through
the skin as a result of the loss of blood supply to that part of the body. The lack of
blood supply and the inability to sweat together cause the body to overheat.

Heatstroke can cause permanent injury if not treated properly. It is one of
how the body can react to heat.

No How Does a Kite Fly?
1 Kites have been known for thousand of years. They are used for military or

scientific purposes. Todays kites are much used for leisure and competition
2 A kite uses wind to make it fly because it is heavier than air. When wind

travels over the surface of the kite, it is split into two streams of air. One
stream of the air goes over the kite while the second stream goes under the
kite.
3 The high pressure area has a pushing effect while the low pressure area has
a pulling effect.
4 A kite is an object which is made from a light material stretched over a frame.
Due to its light material a kite will lift off the ground and fly when it is tilted
into the wind.

How Do We Breathe?
The nose, trachea and lungs are the main organs which make up the
respiratory system. This system allows the exchange of gases which are needed for
us to live.
Breathing happens when the brain sends a message through the nerves to the
intercostal muscles which lie between the ribs and diaphragm. When the instruction
is received, the muscles pull the ribs outwards and the diaphragm relaxes so that the
space in the chest gets bigger. Because the pressure in the chest gets lower, air
rushes in to fill the lungs.
This air is first taken in through the nose or mouth. It then travels into the
throat (the pharynx) and on through the voice box (the larynx). The opening to the
voice box has a cover over it called the epiglottis.
This cover opens when a breath is taken. In this way, the air is able to flow
down the trachea but food is kept out.

After passing down the trachea the air travels into the lung down either the
right or left bronchus, through the bronchioles and at last into tiny air sacs called
alveoli. These are covered with small blood vessels called capillaries. From here,
oxygen is finally taken into the blood stream and carbon dioxide is passed back to
the lungs.

The intercostal muscles then push the rib cage back inwards. As a result, the
space in the chest gets smaller and the pressure rises, thus pushing the carbon
dioxide back out of the lungs.

And it all happens in the space of a single breath!

Taking care of the keyboard
The keyboard is a roburts deivice used for inputting data on to your computer.
As you type in information small letters are sent via the table to the inside of the
machine where they are organized into the words that you see. Keep your cable
straight.
It is important that the keyboard cable has no kinks or that no object is placed
on the cable to restrict the flow of letters to the machine. Care also must be taken
that letters with sharp point do not become snared in the cable.
X’s and Z’s are the most common letters to be snared and the result will be
words appearing on the screen with these letters missing. O’s and D’s move the
easiest through the cable.
To best take care of your keyboard cable stretch it out and straighten the kinks
frequently. Letters are snared most frequently where the cable enters the machine
so be sure to straighten that section of cable so on a weekly basis.
Be aware that any spelling mistakes may be the result of letters stuck in the
cable rather than dyslexic fingers. Letters caught in the cable decay away quickly
once the machine is turned off so no lasting damage occurs in the build up of snared
letters.

Text 2 for no. 6-12
The most common causes of tsunamis are underwater earthquakes. To

understand underwater earthquakes, you must first understand plate tectonics. The
theory of plate tectonics suggests that the lithosphere, or top layer of the Earth, is
made up of a series of huge plates. These plates make up the continents and sea
floor. They rest on an underlying viscous layer called the asthenosphere.

Think of a pie cut into eight slices. The pie crust would be the lithosphere and
the hot, sticky pie filling underneath would be on the asthenosphere. On the Earth,
these plates are constantly in motion, moving along each other at the speed of 1 to 2
inches( 2.5 – 5 cm) per year. The movement occurs most dramatically along fault
lines ( where the pie is cut). These motions are capable of producing earthquakes
and volcanism.

When two plates come into contact at a region known as a plate boundary, a
heavier plate can slip under a lighter one. This is called subduction. Underwater
subduction often leaves enormous”handprints” in the form of deep ocean trenches
along the seafloor. In some cases of subduction, part of seafloor connected to the
lighter plate may “snap up” suddenly due to pressure from the sinking plate. This
results in an earthquake. The focus of the earthquake is the point within the Earth
where the rupture first occurs, rocks break and the first seismic waves are
generated. The epicenter is the point on the seafloor directly above the focus.

When the piece of the plate snaps up and sends tons of rock shooting upward
with tremendous force, the energy of that force is transferred to the water. The

How Do Fireworks Explode?
Despite all their different colors, shapes, and sounds, all fireworks have the
same basic components. Aerial fireworks consist of a shell made of heavy paper that
holds the ‘lift charge’, the ‘bursting charge’, and the ‘stars’. All of these glittery
spectacles come from good old- fashioned combustion. Combustion is a chemical
reaction between two substances (a fuel and an oxidant) that produces light and
heat. The heat causes gasses to expand rapidly, building pressure. The shells are
tightly wrapped cylinders, which provide good resistance to this pressure, giving it a
short time to build in intensity. Then, when the reaction overpowers the shell, you
get the explosive firework effect.
It all starts when the shell is placed into a mortar (a cylinder the same size as
the shell, which holds the firework in place while the fuse burns). The lift charge, at
the bottom of the shell, is basically concentrated black powder (charcoal, sulphur,
and potassium nitrate). When lit by the dangling fuse, the lift charge sends the shell
into the air. Basic firecrackers are just paper-covered black powder: you light the
fuse and listen to the popping sound.
The bursting charge is another round of black powder with its own time-
delayed fuse higher up in the shell. The bursting charge creates the heat to activate
the stars that surround it and explode them outward from the shell. The stars are
where the magic happens.
Stars are balls made up of fuels, oxidizers, color- creating combinations of
different kinds of metals, and a binder to hold everything together. The stars can be
arranged within the firework shell to create shapes. The shapes can be things like
hearts, stars, and circles. Hundreds of stars can be used in a single firework shell.

What is Blog?
A blog is a page on the Internet. The term “blog” used to refer to a web
log. People used web logs to list links to various websites. They shared them with
others. In other words, they kept logs of places they visited on the Internet. These
web logs would have links on them. The term “link” is short for “hyperlink.” It’s a
way to connect one webpage to another. When you click on a link, a new page will
open.
Over time, people began to use blogs to write personal comments and
reflections. Blogs became a form of online journaling. Blogs provide a place for
readers to write what they think. Ideally, others will read the blog and comment
with their reactions to what they have read. This will result in an ongoing
conversation. Many teachers now use blogs with their students. Some blogs just
have news and information. These blogs do not usually lend themselves
to comments.
People also use blogs to list, or “log,” other blogs they like or their favorite
websites. Often a blog will focus on a particular topic or issue. Blogs may contain
links to other websites, pictures, lists, or videos. On the Internet, the blog displays
the most recent entries first.Blogs allow a group of people to communicate with each
other on different topics. This allows people to create their own publishing space
with information, links, and ideas they may want to share.

LEARNING SUMMARY

The Language of Song
Lyric is an important part of a song. Song is one of the literary works that can help
us to understand not only the people’s sentiments, but also their messages or stories
which are conveyed through its lyrics. Song has various purposes. It can be aimed to
entertain the listeners, express the writers’ feelings so that the listeners can feel
sympathetic or empathic towards the stories in the songs, and convey the messages
that the writers want to share.

Language Features
In order to understand a song, you also should know about language features of a
poem. Here are the things that you need to pay attention to: Vocabulary and Syntax
(Diction).
Vocabulary that is selected in writing poem is generally related with syntax. The
writers choose certain words to create certain moods or atmospheres and to express
how deep their feelings are. When you think about vocabulary in writing a poem, you
may think about the simple or a complex one.

For example:
(Simple) This is just what happiness is.
(Complex) Through timeless words and priceless pictures
And when you want to measure someone’s ability to understand your words, you will
use a syntax by using usual or unusual words.

For example:
And shoddy cursive I've been reading
An action of combining both vocabulary and syntax refers to the choice of words
called diction.

Figurative language such as simile and metaphor
1) Simile is a comparison used to attract the readers or listeners’ attention and

describe something in descriptive terms. Simile works by comparing two different
things using words [like] or [as]. Simile is used both in the poem and song lyrics.
For example:
And what a beautiful mess, yes it is
It is like we are picking up trash in dresses
It means that the situation referred by “it” is compared to picking up trash
We will fly like birds not of this earth
The writer compares “we” to some supreme birds

2) Metaphor is similar to simile but you do not use words [like] or [as] in the
sentences like you do in Simile; it compares two different things directly by using

aBahasa Inggris Kelas XIuntuk SMA/MA 141
141

linking verb [am, is, are, be]. Metaphor is also used both in the poem as well as
song lyrics.
For example:
The kind of words you write kind of turn themselves into knives.
It means that the words are really hurtful, similar to knives that can hurt.
In summary, to understand the language of song, you have to:
• identify the meaning of Simile and metaphor used in the songs.
• identify the diction which develops certain moods or atmospheres in the

songs.

A. Identify the figurative language in every parts of the song

If I Ain't Got You
Alicia Keys

Some people live for the fortune
Some people live just for the fame
Some people live just for to play the game

Some people think that the physical things define what’s within
And I’ve been there before
But that life’s a bore
So full of the superficial

Some peole want it all
But I don’t want nothing at all
If I ain’t got you baby
Some people want diamond rings
Some just want everything
But everything means nothing
If I ain’t got you

Some people search for a fountain
That promise forever young
Some people need three dozen roses
And that’s the only way to prove you love them
Hand me the world on a silver platter
And what good would it be?
With no one to share, with no one who truly cares for me
If ain’t got you with me baby
Nothing in this whole wide world don’t mean a thing
If ain’t got you with me baby
