‫السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته‬

All praise belongs to Allah, the Almighty the All Wise. May the peace and praise of Allah be upon our
beloved Prophet Muhammed sallalahualayhiwasallam.

Dear Manarat Jeddah International School Parents and Students,

We are pleased to present to you this year’s handbook. It contains summarised, essential information that
both students and parents need to know, including our school profile, historical and current achievements,
important events, the school code of conduct, marks distribution for our varied internal assessments,
school policies, how parents/guardians can work with us to solve any issues they have, a comprehensive
presentation of our extracurricular activities programs, all essential contact details of administrative and
teaching staff and much more.
We hope the information in this handbook will serve as a valuable tool for you to maintain regular
communication with us and address any issues that arise, promptly and professionally.
The world of education faced an unprecedented challenge due to the Covid-19 virus. Our lives, and
especially the lives our children have been drastically affected. However, by the Grace and Mercy of Allah,
He opened new doorways for us and granted us the ability to continue serving the educational needs of
our students through distance learning programs via Microsoft Teams and enabled us to complete all
curriculum objectives.
As per the directives of the Ministry of Education, this year we have opened our schools for fully
vaccinated students aged above 12 years to attend school physically and continue to serve those who
cannot attend via our successful online mediums. All methods of academic assessments previously utilised
will be implemented and our dedicated team of administrators and teachers will endeavour to continue
delivering the high-quality services you have received from us over the years.
It gives us great pleasure to announce that our students have once again excelled in the Cambridge
International IGCSE and A-Level Examinations during the May-June session of 2021. Our boys achieved
67A* and 35A grades at IGCSE level. In fact, the percentage of grades ranging from A* to C was for the
second successive year 100% which is far higher than the national average in the United Kingdom and the
international average worldwide. We are extremely proud of our students and the dedicated teachers who
guided them to success. Our heartfelt congratulations go out to the parents of these outstanding students,
who indeed are role models and an inspiration to their peers in the lower grades.
At MJIS-Boys Section, we aim to develop respectful, responsible and resourceful students who benefit the
world and its people. Our school program is well-rounded and structured to assist students in developing
international-mindedness and achieving their goals.
We are your school, and we are committed to working cooperatively with you to prepare our students for
success in this life and the next, all by the Will of Allah, His Guidance, Mercy and Assistance.

May Allah Bless you all.

Manarat Jeddah International School was founded by Prince Mohammad bin Faisal in 1977 to serve the
growing expat community in Jeddah, KSA. Since then, Manarat schools expanded and now have several
branches across the Kingdom.
In 2010 MJIS first gained accreditation from CITA.
CITA was later acquired by AdvancED and so the school was re-accredited by AdvancED in 2015. The school
achieved the full five-year accreditation.
In 2017, Maarif for Education and Training became the first organisation in Saudi Arabia to acquire System
Accreditation from AdvancED.
This year (In-sha-Allah) Maarif will be applying for re-accreditation from Cognia (formerly AdvancED).
Cognia is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that accredits primary and secondary
schools throughout the United States and internationally. Cognia has served more than 36,000 institutions
globally with a total of 25 million students and 5 million educators in about 80 counties.

Vision: Ma’arif aims at having a pioneering role in preparing innovators to participate in improving our society.
Mission: Ma’arif’s teams work to create a motivating learning environment which leads to creativity.

Manarat Jeddah International School-Boys Section

Our Vision: To create an atmosphere which encourages high educational achievements, develops
exemplary character and fosters multicultural awareness.
Our Mission: To provide our students with a challenging standard of education with a fully integrated
curriculum which develops academic and social skills in a stimulating technologically modern, enjoyable
and secure environment.

In line with our school vision to create an atmosphere which encourages high educational achievements
and develops exemplary character, we implement the following policies:

General Student Conduct

1. All students must abide by the laws and regulations of Islam and the School Code of Conduct
whenever at school and whilst using the school transport services.

2. All students must abide by any additional/specific rules and instructions related to conduct during
all after school activities and educational/recreational trips outside of the school.

3. No students can leave the school premises during school timings except through the official school
system involving official, documented approval of both the school administration and the
parent/guardian of the students concerned.

4. Students are not allowed to bring mobile phones, laptops, tablets, cameras or any other
digital/smart device to school without specific authorization from the school administration and
parental approval. Any non-compliance of this means that all financial losses caused due to theft or
damage will be the sole responsibility of the student and parent/guardian concerned. Furthermore,
the school administration has the full right to confiscate any unauthorized devices brought to
school by any student and hold on to them until parents/guardians are contacted and appropriate
disciplinary action taken.

5. Students are not allowed to bring footballs, basketballs, tennis balls, bats, rackets etc. to school.
6. Unauthorized and unsupervised playing will result in the balls/equipment being confiscated and

appropriate disciplinary action.
7. The school administration reserves the right to suspend (and in serious cases, even expel) any

student caught in possession of or attempting to spread, via any means, obscene material of any
form (images, texts, videos etc.) inside the school premises or on the school buses. Each case will be
studied individually and the level of punitive action will be in accordance with the severity of the
offence committed.
8. Students are strictly forbidden from bringing any dangerous items to school such as knives,
chemicals, highly flammable material etc. that may pose a potential threat to the health and safety
of people in the school. Any student caught violating this will face strict disciplinary action that may
also involve the police.
9. The school administration reserves the right to send students home if they attend school without
the official school uniform or boys who arrive at school with excessively long hair (beyond the ears
and back of the neck), or partly shaven heads or any other extreme styles that do not conform with
Islamic modesty.
10. Any incident of vandalism or theft of school, student or staff property will be investigated
thoroughly. If a student is proven guilty, the parents/guardians will bear the responsibility of any
financial consequences of repair or replacement of the damaged or lost item.

Examinations, Projects and Tests

11. Parents/guardians can request to see their son’s Term Exam or End-of-year exam paper after it has
been marked, but under no circumstances will they be given the paper to take home, nor will they
be allowed to take a copy.

12. The general policy for Quizzes is that one re-sit will be provided for students who score less than
60%. However, the maximum mark attainable from the re-sit is 60% (12 out of 20).

13. Any student who does not submit assigned projects by the set deadline without a valid reason risk
losing marks for a late submission. Failure to produce a project will result in zero marks recorded on
the report card.

14. Any student caught cheating or even attempting to cheat during any formal assessment, by
whatever means, may have all their marks nullified for that assessment and lose the right to a re-
sit. Each case will be judged individually, and the level of punitive action will be in accordance with
the severity of the violation committed.

15. The overall pass mark for any grade year is 60% per subject, after which the student will
automatically be promoted to the next grade. Any student who fails to achieve this in any subject
will be given an opportunity to re-sit a Term examination they failed after all examinations have
been completed for that academic year. The marks achieved in the re-sit will then be used to
replace the original marks achieved in that subject. Failure to achieve 60% after the re-sit
examinations may result in the student not being promoted to the next grade. Each case will be
studied individually and judged accordingly by the school administration to decide the most
appropriate course of action.

Textbooks, Uniform and Bags

16. For Grades 4-6, every student will be provided with a single copy of each textbook (and workbook
where applicable) for each subject, one school bag (If provided by Maarif) and one set of P.E.
uniform per academic year. The school administration is not responsible for lost/stolen or damaged
equipment once the student has received the items mentioned.

17. IMPORTANT: Sometimes, certain books are not distributed in the first week of the new academic
year due to delays in delivery from publishers or other factors outside of the school’s control, in
such circumstances, our teachers will provide adequate resources and learning material to support
student learning until delayed textbooks arrive. We cannot promise or guarantee that all books will
be available at the start of an academic year.

18. Textbooks for Saudi National Identity subjects (Arabic/Islamic Studies in Arabic/Social Studies in
Arabic) will be issued to students when the local government authority issues them to the school.
Again, this is sometimes delayed from their side, so our teachers will provide all necessary support
material in the event of a delay. We cannot promise or guarantee that all books will be available at
the start of an academic year.

semester have been paid in full.

21. Parents/guardians must purchase school uniform from the specified supplier by the school and
ensure that their sons wear it every day to school.

Class Allocation and Lesson Timetables

22. The school administration reserves the right to allocate which class a student is to be placed in

the administration will assess the request and the class numbers situation before deciding. In all
cases, the school administration reserves the full right of class-allocation.

23. The daily lesson timetable is generated by a software program, so a single change in teacher or
class-numbers will result in new lesson timetables being generated for the whole school. As
registration and teacher numbers usually take several weeks to stabilize at the start of any
academic year, the timetables may need to be changed accordingly.

Arabic for Non-Arabic speaking students (NASS)

24. Students who join our school in any grade who are non-native speakers of the Arabic language will
be offered a unique curriculum, lessons and set of support textbooks specifically designed for them.

25. Students who are native Arabic speakers or Saudi nationals but have a weak grasp of the Arabic
language must acquire specific permission from the Ministry of Education to join the NASS classes.
This permission is usually granted for one academic year only and permission needs to be sought
again for each subsequent year. This permission, if granted, allows the student to attend NASS
classes and sit for the same exams as the non-native Arabic students for the Arabic subject only. It
does not cover Islamic studies in Arabic, nor Social Studies in Arabic.

External Methods of Assessment

1. MAP (Measures of academic progress): for all students of grades 1-9. These are unique standardized
tests created by a well-known American educational organization called NWEA (Northwest
Evaluation Association). These tests adapt to your child’s level of learning, and as a result, each
student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing. There
is no passing or failing with MAP, but rather, it allows us to monitor each student’s skill level.
Each school year, students in grades 4-9 take the tests in English, Mathematics, and Science.
Following each testing period, teachers receive detailed reports showing them exactly which skills
their students have mastered, and which skills need greater focus and further development. Please
visit NWEA’s informative website for more details- www.nwea.org

2. Cambridge Checkpoint: For students of grade 8. Cambridge Checkpoint is an external examination
in English, Maths and Science that serves as an accurate indication of the students’ academic level
prior to entering the more challenging system of IGCSEs in grade 9. The exams will be held in April
2021. Only those students who wish to pursue the British stream in grades 9-12 will be registered
for these examinations and all fees are covered by Maarif.

3. Cambridge International Examinations (IGCSE and A-Level):
Cambridge IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is the world’s most
popular international qualification for 14 – 16-year-olds. Created by CIE in 1985, and based on best
practice in the UK, Cambridge IGCSE is available in over 70 subjects. It equips students not only with
knowledge of specific subjects, but also with problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and an
ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Cambridge IGCSE is internationally recognised by universities in the UK and overseas as equivalent
grade-for-grade to UK GCSE – learn more at https://www.cambridgeinternational.org/
Cambridge IGCSE is excellent preparation for both A/AS Level and the International Baccalaureate
Diploma.
Cambridge IGCSE is taken in 127 countries and suits both national and international teaching
contexts.

4. American High School Diploma (SAT I)
The American Diploma Program allows the implementation of the International Standards of
Learning and is considered a rich and bountiful system. It is recognized and accepted in national
and most rigorous universities around the world.
The American Diploma Program begins at Grade 9 and ends upon completion of Grade 12. Passing
in SAT I test will provide them with a better chance to be accepted in universities around the world.
For details exam format and registration visit: College Board website.
The subjects taught are: English (Language/Literature), Mathematics, Sciences (Biology, Chemistry,
Physics), World History, World Geography, and Accounting.
By the end of Grade 11, all students may sit for the SAT I (English and Math) and during Grade 12,
students may sit for the AP (Advanced Placement) as per their university requirements.

The English language is the main medium of instruction of all non-Arabic related subjects at our
schools. The British and American curricula we implement at our schools, along with all the
students’ textbooks and support material are designed for native English-speaking students. For our
students to truly benefit from these renowned curricular and quality resources, we have employed
a team of highly qualified and experienced English language teachers who use multiple assessment
tools to monitor students’ proficiency and development at all school levels. Maarif often provide
the teaching staff with face-to-face and online professional development opportunities so that they
can always be updated with all syllabi changes and new teaching techniques and strategies. We also
have several programs in place to enhance students’ English language proficiency:

1. MAP – Measure of Academic Progress is a test which is aligned to the Common Core standards. This
test is generated by NWEA, Northwest Evaluation Association which is a non-profit organization
that has assessed millions of students worldwide. MAP precisely measures growth and proficiency
in English Language and Reading (comprehension). These tests are implemented twice a year across
grades 1–9. Each test comprises of around 50 questions. The tests are dynamic. In other words,
each student receives an individualised set of questions that progressively become more
challenging as the student responds correctly. Detailed reports are generated and sent to schools
for teachers to analyse and identify areas in need of development for each student in all key areas
