‫السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته‬

All praise belongs to Allah, the Almighty the All Wise. May the peace and praise of Allah be upon our
beloved Prophet Muhammed sallalahualayhiwasallam.

Dear Manarat Jeddah International School Parents and Students,

The world of education is facing an unprecedented challenge due to the Covid-19 virus. Our lives, and
especially the lives our children have been drastically affected. However, by the Grace and Mercy of Allah,
He opened new doorways for us and granted us the ability to continue serving the educational needs of
our students through distance learning programs via Microsoft Teams. As a result, we were able to
complete all curriculum last year and with that experience we have started strongly this year.

We continue to offer a full schedule of live lessons, so students can interact with their teachers. All
methods of academic assessments previously utilised will be implemented and our dedicated team of
administrators and teachers will endeavour to continue delivering the high-quality services you have
received from us over the years.

It gives us great pleasure to announce that our students have once again excelled in the Cambridge
International IGCSE and A-Level Examinations during the May-June session of 2020. Our boys achieved
62A* and 43A grades at IGCSE level. In fact, the percentage of grades ranging from A* to C was for the first
time in our 40-year history, 100% which is far higher than the national average in the United Kingdom and
the international average worldwide. We are extremely proud of our students and the dedicated teachers
who guided them to success. Our heartfelt congratulations go out to the parents of these outstanding
students, who indeed are role models and an inspiration to their peers in the lower grades.

This handbook contains summarised essential information that both students and parents need to know
regarding important events, the school code of conduct, marks distribution for our varied internal
assessments, school policies, how parents/guardians can work with us to solve any issues they have, a
comprehensive presentation of last year’s extracurricular activities programs, all essential contact details
of administrative and teaching staff and much more.

We hope the information in this handbook will serve as a valuable tool for you to maintain regular
communication with us and address any issues that arise promptly and professionally.

At MJIS, we aim to develop respectful, responsible and resourceful Muslims who benefit the world and its
people. Our school program is well-rounded and is structured to assist students in developing
international-mindedness and in achieving their goals.

We are your school and we are committed to working cooperatively with you to prepare our students for
success in this life and the next, all by the Will of Allah, His Guidance, Mercy and Assistance.

May Allah Bless you all.

Our Mission: To provide our students with a challenging standard of education with a fully integrated
curriculum which develops academic and social skills in a stimulating technologically modern, enjoyable
and secure environment.

In line with our school vision to create an atmosphere which encourages high educational achievements,
we will be implementing the following policies:

General Conduct

1. All students must abide by the laws and regulations of Islam and the school code of conduct
whenever at school and whilst using the school transport services.

2. All students must abide by any additional/specific rules and instructions related to conduct during
all after school activities and educational/recreational trips outside of the school.

3. No students can leave the school premises during school timings except through the official school
system involving official, documented approval of both the school administration and the
parent/guardian of the students concerned.

4. Students are not allowed to bring mobile phones, laptops, tablets, cameras or any other
digital/smart device to school without specific authorization from the school administration and
parental approval. Any non-compliance of this means that all financial losses caused due to theft or
damage will be the sole responsibility of the student and parent/guardian concerned. Furthermore,
the school administration has the full right to confiscate any unauthorized devices brought to
school by any student and hold on to them until parents/guardians are contacted and appropriate
disciplinary action taken.

5. Students are not allowed to bring footballs, basketballs, tennis balls, bats, rackets etc. to school.
6. Unauthorized and unsupervised playing will result in the balls/equipment being confiscated and

appropriate disciplinary action.
7. The school administration reserves the right to suspend (and in serious cases, even expel) any

student caught in possession of or attempting to spread, via any means, obscene material of any
form (images, texts, videos etc.) inside the school premises or on the school buses. Each case will be
studied individually and the level of punitive action will be in accordance with the severity of the
offence committed.
8. Students are strictly forbidden from bringing any dangerous items to school such as knives,
chemicals, highly flammable material etc. that may pose a potential threat to the health and safety
of the people in the school. Any student caught violating this will face strict disciplinary action that
may also involve the police.
9. The school administration reserves the right to send students home if they attend school without
the official school uniform or boys who arrive at school with excessively long hair (beyond the ears
and back of the neck), or partly shaven heads or any other extreme styles that do not conform with
Islamic modesty.
10. Any incident of vandalism or theft of school, student or staff property will be investigated
thoroughly. If a student is proven guilty, the parents/guardians will bear the responsibility of any
financial consequences of repair or replacement of the damaged or lost item.

Our Mission: To provide our students with a challenging standard of education with a fully integrated

Examinations, Projects and Tests

11. Parents/guardians can request to see their son’s Mid-year or End-of-year exam paper after it has
been marked, but under no circumstances will they be given the paper to take home nor will they
be allowed to take a copy.

12. The general policy for Mid-Term tests is that one re-sit will be provided for students who score less
than 60%. However, the maximum mark attainable from the re-sit is 60% (6 out of ten).

13. Any student who does not submit assigned projects by the set deadline without a valid reason risks
losing marks for a late submission. Failure to produce a project will result in zero marks recorded on
the report card.

14. Any student caught cheating or even attempting to cheat during any formal assessment, by
whatever means, may have all their marks nullified for that particular assessment and also lose the
right to a re-sit. Each case will be judged individually, and the level of punitive action will be in
accordance with the severity of the violation committed.

15. The overall pass mark for any grade year is 50% per subject, after which the student will
automatically be promoted to the next grade. Any student who fails to achieve this in any subject
will be given an opportunity to re-sit their Mid-Year and/or End-of-year examination after all
examinations have been completed for that academic year. The marks achieved in the re-sit will
then be used to replace the original marks achieved in that subject. Failure to achieve 50% after the
re-sit examinations may result in the student not being promoted to the next grade. Each case will
be studied individually and judged accordingly by the school administration to decide the most
appropriate course of action.

Textbooks, Uniform and Bags

1. Every student is entitled to a single copy of each textbook/workbook for his/her grade as per
allocated by the school administration, one school bag (for grades 4-6 only) and one set of P.E.
uniform. The school administration is not responsible for lost/stolen or damaged equipment once
the student has received the items mentioned.

2. Most of the textbooks issued in grades Seven, Nine and Eleven are ‘two-year coursebooks’ and so
will not be issued a second time in grades Eight, Ten and Twelve, respectively. It is the responsibility
of the student to ensure that these books remain in good condition throughout the two years they
are intended for.

3. All items mentioned above will only be issued to the student after the complete fees for the first
semester have been paid in full.

Parents/guardians must purchase and ensure that their sons wear the school uniform supplied by the
school.

16. Parents/guardians are responsible to ensure that their sons/daughters arrive at school on time (or

are ready to be picked up by the school bus from the agreed location). All students should be at
school, at the very latest, a few minutes before the commencement of the morning assembly or
morning tutorial.
17. The earliest time students can arrive or be dropped off at school is half an hour before the
commencement of the morning assembly or morning tutorial as the supervisors do not arrive
before this time. The school administration is not responsible for the health and safety of any
student inside the school before this time.
18. For students who arrive via private transport, it is the responsibility of the parents/guardians to
ensure that their sons enter the school premises and via the official gates designated for their
grade/section.
19. The school administration is responsible for the health and safety of all students once they have
entered the school premises at the correct time in the morning until they leave at the official home
time.
20. For students who arrive via the school buses, the school administration is responsible for their
health and safety from the moment they enter the school bus until they are dropped off after
school at their homes.
21. Parents/guardians who do not use the school buses must ensure that their sons/daughters are
picked up immediately (or leave themselves in cases where they are old enough to walk home or
use a taxi) at home time as supervising staff will only remain on duty for a maximum of half an hour
after the official home time.

diagnosis of students’ academic levels for each section of the curriculum.

3. Mid-Term progress tests- more substantial assessments providing more general diagnosis.
4. Mid-Year Exams: thorough assessments of all skills and concepts taught throughout the 1st term.
5. End-of-Year Exams: thorough assessments of all skills and concepts taught throughout the 2nd term.
6. Online internal standardized tests (IST) for grades 4-9: provide us with another diagnosis of

students’ academic levels in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science in comparison with all
other students studying at the various Maarif schools throughout the Kingdom.

External Methods of Assessment

1. MAP (Measures of academic progress): for all students of grades 1-9. These are unique standardized
tests created by a well-known American educational organization called NWEA (Northwest
Evaluation Association). These tests adapt to your child’s level of learning, and as a result, each
student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing. There
is no passing or failing with MAP, but rather, it allows us to monitor each student’s skill level.
Each school year, students in grades 1-9 take the tests in English, Mathematics, and Science.
Following each testing period, teachers receive detailed reports showing them exactly which skills
their students have mastered, and which skills need greater focus and further development. Please
visit NWEA’s informative website for more details- www.nwea.org

2. Cambridge Checkpoint: For students of grade 8. Cambridge Checkpoint is an external examination
in English, Maths and Science that serves as an accurate indication of the students’ academic level
prior to entering the more challenging system of IGCSEs in grade 9. The exams will be held in April
2021. Only those students who wish to pursue the British stream in grades 9-12 will be registered
for these examinations and all fees are covered by Maarif.

3. Cambridge International Examinations (IGCSE and A-Level):
Cambridge IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is the world’s most
popular international qualification for 14 – 16-year-olds. Created by CIE in 1985, and based on best
practice in the UK, Cambridge IGCSE is available in over 70 subjects. It equips students not only with
knowledge of specific subjects, but also with problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and an
ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Cambridge IGCSE is internationally recognised by universities in the UK and overseas as equivalent
grade-for-grade to UK GCSE – learn more at www.cie.org.uk
Cambridge IGCSE is excellent preparation for both A/AS Level and the International Baccalaureate
Diploma.
Cambridge IGCSE is taken in 127 countries and suits both national and international teaching
contexts.

4. American High School Diploma (SAT I and SAT II)
The American Diploma Program allows the implementation of the International Standards of
Learning and is considered a rich and bountiful system. It is recognized and accepted in national
and most rigorous universities around the world.
The American Diploma Program begins at Grade 9 and ends upon completion of Grade 12. Passing
in SAT and SAT subject tests, will provide them with a better chance to be accepted in universities
around the world.
The subjects taught are: English (Language), Mathematics, Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics),
World History, World Geography, and Accounting.
By the end of Grade 11, all students will be required to sit for the SAT I (English and Math) and
during Grade 12, students will need to sit for the SAT II as per their university requirements.

The English language is the main medium of instruction of all non-Arabic related subjects at our
schools. The British and American curricula we implement at our schools, along with all the
students’ textbooks and support material are designed for native English-speaking students. For our
students to truly benefit from these renowned curricular and quality resources, we have employed
a team of highly qualified and experienced English language teachers who use multiple assessment
tools to monitor students’ proficiency and development at all school levels. Maarif often provide
the teaching staff with face-to-face and online professional development opportunities so that they
can always be updated with all syllabi changes and new teaching techniques and strategies. We also
have several programs in place to enhance students’ English language proficiency:

1. MAP – Measure of Academic Progress is a test which is aligned to the Common Core standards. This
test is generated by NWEA, Northwest Evaluation Association which is a non-profit organization
that has assessed millions of students worldwide. MAP precisely measures growth and proficiency
in English Language and Reading (comprehension). These tests are implemented twice a year across
grades 1–9. Each test comprises of around 50 questions. The tests are dynamic. In other words,
each student receives an individualised set of questions that progressively become more
challenging as the student responds correctly. Detailed reports are generated and sent to schools
for teachers to analyse and identify areas in need of development for each student in all key areas
of English.

2. MAP Skills – A skills mastery and progress monitoring assessment that helps teachers drill down to
the specific skills each student needs to learn. Teachers use this online tool to send tailor-made
assignments to students following their MAP tests so that students can practice and develop key
skills.

3. IST – Maarif have their own Internal Standardised Tests that are also conducted twice a year via the
MLG. These tests are fully aligned to the curriculum taught to provide teachers with another set of
useful data about students’ performance and growth.

4. By-weekly quizzes are designed and conducted by all teachers across all grades to regularly
monitor students’ competence and language mastery, in all areas of the subject.

5. Weekly spelling quizzes are conducted with the primary grades 1–6 to help students develop their
vocabulary and spelling.

6. By-weekly writing tasks from various genres/ themes are assigned to all students to develop their
writing skills.

7. Mid-Term and End-of-Term examinations are conducted as summative assessments of students’
English language competence.

8. A well-stocked library is available for students to use and all grades 1–8 are scheduled one lesson a
week at the library to give students the opportunity to read various literature genres of their
interests and write reviews about the books they read.

9. Co-curricular activities are conducted like scrabble competitions, spelling Bee etc. to motivate
students and instill a love of the English language. Teachers also use some educational websites,
such as QUIZLET, QUIZIZ and KAHOOT which help teachers create interactive quizzes on various
topics of the subject to be used as in class. Students enjoy them as they come as a welcome change
to the regular classroom activities. Teachers also send these competitive activities for students to
do at home.

10. Our schools regularly take part in worldwide competitions such as Word Mania which students find
exciting. Word Mania is a word-building challenge which is a race against the clock to build as many
words using given 15 letters in 3 minutes.

11. Morning assembly programs provide students the opportunity to practice and develop orating and
public speaking skills.

12. Primary students are encouraged to keep a reading log and diary.

13. English teachers task students to produce projects involving verbal presentations, further
enhancing their English speaking skills.

14. Grades 7–8 students are gradually prepared for the Cambridge Checkpoint examinations in English
at the end of grade 8.

15. Grades 9–10 students studying the Cambridge IGCSE English language program do highly intensive
courses. Students also sit mock exams so that they can be familiar with exams stress and
conditions. Through these mock exams, students learn all about their strengths and weaknesses,
and they also learn how to practically manage their exam time which a fundamental skill for such
exam taking.

16. Grades 9, 10 and 11 doing the SAT also have their own well-prepared course. In addition to regular
classwork and general practice, Maarif gives the students access to the online SAT Readiness Tests
which helps them practice and master various key skills for the Real SAT generated by the College
Board. These SAT Readiness Tests focus on the same subject areas, skills and subskills as the Real
SAT.

17. Grades 11–12 students have a training and preparation course to sit the IELTS test so that they can
be well prepared and equipped with universities requirements both inside and outside Saudi
Arabia.
