SIGHTS AND INSIGHTS - II
AN EXPLORATION OF CONTEMPORARY INDIAN ART

artists but to bring together stories, shared experiences, myths,
beliefs and more than anything an attempt at shared collectivity, a
sense of belonging. Each of the thirty eight artists presented in this

shared afnity is what makes this show a group show both unique
and signicant. These artists grapple with questions like personal
roots, histories, tradition, identity, plurality, gender, migration and
other complexities that they have chosen to address through their works.

scenes from daily life, icons from mythology, narrative guration,
pop art, abstract art, as well as art that is not bound by any convention
or categorisation. A veritable juxtaposition of artworks, we invite
our viewers to look for their own theme and genre, as the intention
here is to present each and every artwork as a marker of its maker, els.

Anjaneyulu G, an artist known for his hyper-realistic nish with
a surreal touch. The artist has given an entirely new meaning to
the genre of still life. His compositions which strike as photographs
in rst glance are meticulously hand drawn paintings, some taking
even two years for completion. Turning even the most mundane
and everyday use objects into works of art is what makes
Anjaneyulu's works compelling, almost lifelike.

and Crafts, Khallikote, Orissa and MFA in Painting from BHU, Varanasi,

D Jayaprakash
Jaya Prakash selectively picks up an interesting ctional imagery
of wild animals akin to the ancient Chimera. He believes that
making art is a reection of nature as well as society thus the
metaphoric Chimera occupies his canvases to produce multiple
meanings.
Just like a glorious king who wanders every nook and corner
and hunts for mundane things and exhibits his ghting skills
claiming his (id)entity in the society, he too craves for his glorious
moments. His cynical but true instincts are dubbed here to create
an embodiment of free will. The image of the wild beast, usually
the king of animal world is captured and tamed to cater to his
visual dialect. The sturdy unbroken uid lines and the folk
sensibilities come together manifesting an unusual design sense,
where atness and interlocking patterns play a sublime role.

Jagadish Chinthala
Born in 1956, in Hyderabad, C. Jagdish had a passion for drawing since a
young age, but did not discover the medium of paper until he created
puppets for a children’s theater group during his rst years struggling to
live as an independent artist. These papier mache creations developed
into busts, masks, and life-sized gures depicting the artists astute
perception of the outside world and the fallibility of human nature.
Inspired by toys, acquaintances, and incidents from his childhood in India,
each piece becomes specic and unique, it's character subtly revealed
through clothing, facial expression, posture, and use of hands. It is
Jagdish's depiction of intimate human emotion that gives his works such
universal appeal, affectionately commenting on society and dramatically
narrating his stories.
After winning his rst paper sculpture prize at the All India Miniature
Exhibition, Jagdish was awarded a grant scholarship to work at the
prestigious Garhi Studio in Delhi. There he developed his sculpting
technique and style, leading to the British Council and Charles Wallace
India traveling grant for study in Britain. In 1991, Jagdish was the rst
Indian offered the status of "artist in residence" at Lakeside Studio outside
of Chicago. His highest honor was becoming recipient of the prestigious
Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award in 1993, the largest grant offered to
independent artists in the United States. Jagdish continues to work on 3
continents, with studios in India, Great Britain, and the U.S.

KR Santhana Krishnan
Hailing from Kumbakonam, Santhana Krishnan believes in
treasuring the heritage and culture that his 0ancestors built.
What speaks more about our culture and heritage than the adobe
that we live in, he asks. The home speaks about the past, present
and future of a family and the most vital aspect to any home is the
front door. His work revolves around this entrance. He paints
wooden, soot-covered, kumkum and turmeric marking covered
doors because they fascinate him more in comparison to the
modern state of the art technology-driven doors. He believes that
each door has a story to narrate, and there will always be people
interested in that story.
