REWARD OR PUNISHMENT : WHICH IS MORE

EFFECTIVE ?

Nowadays, when parents try various methods of making their ward study and make

them fall in love with their subjects. One of the first things that come to their mind is

reward or punishment. Reward and punishment can be seen in various other fields

where the work to be done fast, for example, a pizza delivery person has been given a

time limit of thirty minutes, so if they fail to deliver under the time limit, then they

shall pay for the pizza from their own pocket.

This is a punishment criterion which has proved to be a very effective method. Now we

take another example in which the delivery person is given a time limit of thirty

minutes. If he successfully delivers the pizza delivered under the time limit. This is the

reward criteria. On comparing the two we realize that keeping punishment in mind,

nearly all the pizzas are delivered on time while for reward only 70% pizzas are

delivered under the time limit.

When we compare the number of accidents occurred, the punishment gets more people

in accidents than reward. Thus, in essence, it is observed that reward and punishment

both have their pros and cons.

When it comes to studies, both reward and punishment are equally ineffective as it

makes the child think about what will happen after the result rather than helping them

focus on their studies.

-Archas Srivastava (XII-C)

REWARD OR PUNISHMENT : WHICH IS MORE

EFFECTIVE ?

Reward and punishment both are integral parts of one’s life. When a person makes a

mistake, it is necessary to get a punishment to learn from the mistakes but at the same

time for a good thing is also necessary to encourage the person.

As I said, both reward and punishment are necessary in one’s life, but I personally

prefer reward is more effective. When a person is rewarded for doing something good

for the society or excelling in his/her field, it motivates the person to work harder and

also it boosts up his confidence level. Reward in any form whether it is award or

money is always very encouraging. A reward motivates the person to work even

harder and achieve a bigger reward than the earlier one. Reward also plays a vital role

in a child’s life because when a child is rewarded, he starts taking his jobs more

seriously even though it may involve cleaning his room only. A reward is not only a

source of motivation for the common people but also for the person who is good in

his respective field. For example, a sportsperson gets awards like Rajiv Gandhi Khel

Ratna Award or an actor gets a Filmfare Award which motivates them to work harder

and get an award but at a higher level.

REWARD OR PUNISHMENT : WHICH IS MORE

EFFECTIVE ?

Punishment teaches a person various lessons in life; it teaches the person

to learn from the mistake and not to repeat it again. But sometimes, it

gives the opposite result than expected. Sometimes the person turns

aggressive after punishment and rather than learning from the mistake,

learns to take revenge. The punishment also sometimes gets brutal which

the person may not deserve and it leaves the person emotionally and

mentally disturbed. Punishment also decreases the achievement level of a

person because the person is in the constant fear of being punished and is

not able to do work with more focus and determination. But at the same

time, I totally do not disagree with the concept of punishment, but I feel

reward and punishment should be balanced.

“A reward is like the crown of a king, but a punishment is like the

responsibility of the king.”

-Kanishka (XII-C)

REWARD OR PUNISHMENT : WHICH IS

MORE EFFECTIVE ?

“You can change a man physically, but it is the changing of the mind that really matters.”

In our everyday life, we come across crimes that are heinous and crimes that must get the

punishment the times these criminals are from the deprived sections of the Indian society

which compel them even more to commit those crimes.

Reward and punishment can be treated as two sides of the same coin and more importantly,

they are not always related to heinous crimes. They come into play whenever a person

does a wrong thing, deliberately or not. Both reward and punishment have their own pros

and cons and both must be carried out in a controlled manner. Giving ample amount of

appreciation and rewards to one may boost the morale of the person but it ultimately

makes the person arrogant and may see his peers as inferiors. Similarly, if punishment is

pushed way too forward it ends up in becoming the reason for depression, sadness and

what not. Only recently a seven-year-old boy in Delhi committed suicide as his class

teacher punished him brutally every day and that’s something! Moreover, excess of

anything is wrong and, in this case, even lack of it can have severe consequences.

In a nutshell, both ‘reward and punishment’ are equally effective in different in their own

different ways and both have equal but opposite impact on an individual.

“Punish the sin, not the sinner.”

-Kashik Sen (XII-C)

REWARD OR PUNISHMENT : WHICH IS MORE

EFFECTIVE ?

'Reward or punishment, which one is more effective' is the question which we usually

think off. Rewards are given when we do something really great and punishments are

given when we do something wrong. In my point of view, rewards must be given. The

people must see the positive side of a person and encourage him/her to do something

good. Sometimes, reward do not really work. Punishment should be given if the person

has done something wrong. Punishments are usually given to a person who isn’t

listening in spite of regular warnings. If we do not give punishment, then it becomes a

habit for the person to get indulged in wrong things frequently.

For example: a person who commits crime every day and is being given warning for it

but still continues to do so is to be punished for the crimes he has committed. His family

members should then call the police and get him punished for his sins.

There are many advantages and disadvantages of punishment. The advantage is when a

person gets punished for his wrong deeds then he won't do anything wrong again. A

person not only gets a punishment but also learns a lesson for what he has done. The

disadvantage is that sometimes punishment doesn’t work. Sometimes the person

becomes so used to it that it becomes his habit to repeat it again and again. When a

person is given reward, he gets a chance of improving is ability. Whereas, the

disadvantage is that he may become overconfident and then if anything goes wrong, he

isn’t able to bear it. -Riya Yadav (XII-A)

REWARD OR PUNISHMENT : WHICH IS

MORE EFFECTIVE ?

Everybody knows that there are two types of actions- Reward or Punishment. We all are

familiar with both of them. Which one would you like? Obviously, we all will choose

reward because no one likes punishment. Punishment is always seen as a negative term

by everyone. But, sometimes in the punishment, a reward is hidden. Everything that

happens in the world has something positive as well as negative. Reward also has a

positive as well as a negative side. If a person is rewarded, then it means that he has

improved and is on the right track. But the negative part is that he may think that he is the
best and no one is better than him. Reward is a gift given for doing good work. However,

it is not necessary that a person should be rewarded for each and every action. The person

should feel that he has got the reward after doing something good.

Punishment and reward are the two sides of a coin. Punishment has a positive as well as a

negative impact. If a person is punished, it doesn’t mean that he has done something

wrong. Instead, it means that he needs an improvement. Punishment is nothing but

'correcting someone's mistakes'. Punishment is mostly considered a negative term,

however it is more effective than a reward as through punishment, we get to know our

mistakes. No one is perfect in this world, at everyone tries to grow to the fullest. We must

remember that whether we are rewarded or punished, we must have a positive outlook to

cope up with the problems easily.

-Nishant Joshi (XII-A)

TREATING EACH DAY AS A GIFT

“Time and tide wait for none.”

At the beginning of each day we are given 86,400 seconds to spend. How we

spend it, depends on us. Everyone is given the same amount of time to

spend, but one becomes a billionaire and the other, a beggar. Sounds

unbelievable right? Truth is unbelievable suppose, you are given Rs. 40,000

to spend each morning. If not spent, the money will disappear. We would

think of all kinds of ways to spend the money judiciously. Then why not

time? It intrigues me that, the same man who wasted time so casually, would

jump and run to spend the money. The truth is we don’t value anything we

have or is given to us for free only when it is gone would we realize its

value. Each day has the potential to shape your destiny, your future and also,

destroy your future. Ironical, yet true. Each day is a step towards your goal,

or a lesson to be learnt. Each day is a blessing given by God. Spend it wisely

and meticulously. Each passing day has the ability to heal. “Only time can

heal the scars and bruises of a man’s life.” Remember, nothing is

impossible!

-M. Sairam (XII-C)

TREATING EACH DAY AS A GIFT

“The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is to celebrate.”

-Oprah Winfrey

Nobody knows if tomorrow is going to come or not. But we always have ‘today’,

this day that we are all living in and we should be well aware that this day is

precious. Treat each day as if it is a gift of God and a chance for everyone to do

good by helping others and not committing any sin.

If you want to do something then don’t wait for some other day to start, start it

today since the other day never comes. Be thankful of each day and the people

you get to meet along with the food you get to eat. Before going to bed, analyze

what you have done in the day, whether it was good or bad or if it may have hurt

someone in any way. And wake up with a thought to bring out the most out of the

day, learning from your mistakes from the previous days and implementing the

thought in the day.

Everyday gives you more and more opportunities to learn so as to develop a

mutual respect towards others. Live your day to the fullest but taking in care the

joy of others.

“Each day is a gift for all, not just one person.”

-Chirag Sharma (XII-C)

TREATING EACH DAY AS A GIFT

Quoting the Holy Bible, “Praise the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own

understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Every day is a gift to us by the Lord, and we should learn to appreciate it in every way

possible. We are often disappointed by the failures in our lives and start condescending our

life and luck. Even though it may be a little difficult to get some perspective at that point in

our lives, but a change of attitude towards it always helps. Start thinking about failures as
steps towards success, and start to value each day to lead a glorious life. Our time on this

planet is extremely short, and thus it would be better if we learn how to be grateful for it. The

transience of human life is an indication for us to be productive with our time, and to be

thankful for the opportunities provided to us.

Vanquishing death, and living an immortal life is beyond our limit. What we can do is

conquer the fleeting moments of our lives and make the best of them. It would be an injustice

to say that we have enough time to procrastinate things in our life. We all are living on
borrowed time, and being resolute about spending it wisely would truly be a blessing.

As a matter of fact, we don’t know what the other person is going through, so the key to

living a grateful life is showing compassion to a fellow individual. Discouraging acts of

criticism also counts as a good deed. What we give to the universe comes right back at us.

Keeping that in mind, it is futile to even think of inducing violence and uncertainty about

principles in one’s life, to get away with it unscathed. Hence, ‘Every drop makes an ocean.

Showing care and compassion would make this world a better place.’
- Ananya Pal (XII-C)

TREATING EACH DAY AS A GIFT

Every day is a new day and every new day is a gift to us from God. Whenever we get a gift,

we are joyful and excited and eager to know what is in the box. The same way we get up in

the morning and receive our gift of new day with a big smile. Now in this box, the gift given

to us may not be of our choice or we may like it, but still we accept it with open arms.

Similarly, sometimes we may face too many challenges, sometimes few but overcoming

them is our responsibility.

Life is like a video game, where we are given tasks to complete, so as to move to the next

level. If we don’t, we have to repeat the same level again. The second time we play, after

being unsuccessful, we think about how we played before, where we went wrong and then

we play accordingly avoiding our earlier mistakes. Sometimes we also get bonus points for

playing well. This happens only when we strive hard to get them. These bonus points are

like opportunities in our life. So, we should treat every day as a gift. When we open this gift,

opportunities, challenges, happiness, sorrows come out of it which we should accept

graciously and make most out of it. Even if we fail, then it is not the end but beginning.

An example of this is what happened with me on Sunday. I went to my dance class. We had

to do a new routine but I wasn’t getting the step correct. My dance teacher asked me to stay

back to practice and learn it more. At first, I thought of my fatigue and decided to say 'no',

but then I thought as if I was running away from a challenge, so I stayed back. In that one

hour, I not only learnt the whole step but also got some important details from my teacher

which increased my knowledge on jazz dance.
-Walusha Rodriguez (XII-A)

WATER

CONSERVATION

WEEK

A REPORT

Water is the driving force of all nature. It is one of those natural resources without which the existence of human

beings and life on our planet is not possible. Unfortunately, humans have proved to be inefficient water users. The

challenge we now face as we head into the future is how to effectively conserve and manage the water we have. To
highlight this urge, a three day campaign was organized at Somerville School, Greater Noida as the initiative of the

District Administration.

To sensitize the students, a variety of activities were undertaken. On the first day a role play titled, ‘Water-the Big

Deal!’ was staged by the students of classes V-IX & XI. The young actors highlighted the alarming condition of water

crisis in various slums and cities where people queue up from early in the morning just to fill a bucket of water. The
skit did bring to the forefront the grim situation of water woes our country is facing. The students understood that

each drop counts and they must not waste water.

A power point presentation with appealing animations, visuals and videos kept the students engrossed on the second

day of the campaign. The engaging power point presentation by Archas Srivastava and Talin Kaul of Class XII

provided statistical data from NITI Aayog which was an eye-opener for the audience as it is claimed that 21 major
cities of India are expected to run out of groundwater as soon as 2020.

The power point presentation also featured information about traditional system of water conservation like ‘Kuhls’
and ‘Baolis’ which were excellent ways of saving the most precious resource. The students also gave an insight into

the importance of ‘Rain Water Harvesting’ and ‘Waste Water Treatment’. It was truly an informative and enriching

experience for the students as they learnt to be water savers in their everyday activities.

A mime presented by the middle school students on the theme of Water Conservation was yet another way
of emphasizing the need to save water. Captivating music and sound effects coupled with fantastic

performance by the young artists garnered applause from the audience. The Street Play with the tagline
‘ Bachao Bachao , Paani Bachao’ made it evident that soon water crisis would be a part of everbody’s life if

we didn’t turn the tap off when we should.

An Inter School Mime Competition was also organized in the school premises to spread the message beyond

the walls of Somerville School, Greater Noida. The occasion was graced by Mr. Thomas T. Roy
Superintendent & Secretary/Treasurer Lott Carey Baptist Mission in India Mr. Abraham Mathew, Manager,

Somerville School , Greater Noida and Dr. Mary Thomas, Principal, Somerville School, Greater Noida and
our esteemed guest Mr. Dinesh Rana, Principal, Kidsville School, Greater Noida.

The programme began with a hymn sung by the Western Music Choir which was followed by the lighting of
the lamp by the dignitaries. The schools of Greater Noida and Noida participated in huge numbers

showcasing the urgent need to conserve water in their own unique way. The participants captured the
audience’s attention as they performed to reinforce the idea of being ‘water warriors’.
The campaign ended with the Prize Distribution Ceremony for Inter School Mime competition. The first

position was bagged by Holy Public School, Greater Noida while DPS, Greater Noida and Somerville
School, Greater Noida were adjudged the first and second runners up respectively. Our Principal ma’am

congratulated the participants and motivated the students to be water conscious. She also underscored the
ways of being water savers at school and in their homes in their everyday activities. The students were
encouraged to spread the word in their family and neighborhood too. At the end of the campaign it would

not be an exaggeration to say that the staff and students at Somerville School, Greater Noida have dedicated
themselves to the cause of conserving water.

TEACHER’S DAY ASSEMBLY

Wherever you find something extraordinary, you will find the finger print of a great teacher.

On the occasion of the birthday of the second President of India, philosopher, scholar and teacher,

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan , Teacher’s Day was celebrated with immense enthusiasm in our

school. The programme started with the reading from the Holy Bible and a word of prayer by the

Head Boy Rishabh Banerjee. Thereafter, bouquets were handed over as a gesture of love and
gratitude to the Principal Dr. Mary Thomas, Vice Principal Ms. Monisha Claudius and Head Mistress

Mrs. Shefali Egbert.

A teacher’s task is the most crucial in the field of education. Whatever strategy may be laid down,

in the ultimate analysis, these have to be interpreted and implemented by the teachers as much

through their personal example as through the teaching-learning process. Acknowledging this fact ,

Class XII paid their tribute and exhibited their love for their teachers through stellar performances

enthralling one and all. The classroom enactment by the students of class XII conveyed the vital
message that not only it is the good teachers who embrace deep concern and respect for their

students but students should bear a sense of responsibility too. Next in the row was a charismatic

medley of English and Hindi songs that left everyone spell bound while the girls danced with poise

on a foot tapping number .The assembly culminated with Principal Ma’am’s address wherein she

appreciated the efforts of the students and emphasised the need for the students to respect their

teachers.

It has been rightly said, ‘Teachers can change lives with the right mix of chalk and challenges’.
