You’ve Tried The Rest,

By Linda Storfer
PAIN AT THE PUMP! This is what those of us who drive are feeling with
gas prices here in Florida averaging over $4 a gallon while in some states it
is over $5. We are troubled by the high rate of inflation and are fearful that
we may be heading into another recession. Who’s fault is this? Who’s to
blame for this inflation? Some blame the current President, some blame the
executives of the major oil companies even though these companies do not
set the prices for oil. Oil is a commodity that is produced, bought, and sold in
markets globally. Needless to say, one of the groups feeling the greatest pinch
are senior citizens living on fixed incomes, many of whom exist solely on
their monthly social security checks. Others are fortunate to receive monthly
pensions and stock dividends in addition to social security but millions who
saved prudently during their entire working lives are now witnessing their
savings accounts dwindling each year due to inflation and worry that they
will outlive their income and savings. This is not a short-term problem and
unfortunately most economists predict that gas prices will continue to rise.
The month of May is a very exciting one at Temple Beth Am which has
fully reopened and is in full swing with a diverse array of programs and
events. I welcome and invite our old members to come back and join us for
our outstanding Sabbath services on Friday nights at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday
mornings at 9:30 a.m. The joy of worshipping together as a “kehillah” with
our fellow congregants led by our outstanding senior Rabbi, Rabbi Michelle
Goldsmith cannot be summed up here in mere words. You must come in
person to experience worshipping with us. We also welcome newcomers
and visitors who are in the southeastern Florida area. For those still hesitant
to worship in person there are daily morning and evening minyans at 7:20
a.m. and 6:00 p.m. respectively online with Monday and Thursday minyans
being held in person at the synagogue.
On May 31st the Adult Education Department will be offering a new course
taught by Rabbi Goldsmith entitled Prophets & Storytellers - Parables from
Yesterday for Today which promises to be a lively interactive course with four
sessions ending on June 21st. This class is open to members and non-members.
If you have only one concert to attend this year, don’t miss the band 1969
which will be held on Sunday evening, May 15th at 7:00 p.m. presented by
our Men’s Club. 1969 is a musical tribute to the music that was recorded and
popular in 1969 including smash hits by the Fifth Dimension, the Beatles,
Sly and the Family Stone, Three Dog Night, Neil Diamond, Aretha Franklin,
and many of your other favorite recording artists. Tickets can be purchased

begins with a serious coupon search. I had never before sought or used
grocery coupons. I reserve this experience for Festival, and while its demise
is being blamed on the competition from online retailers and the effects of the
pandemic, I think the death throes began when they changed their voucher
procedure.
Originally, the process began by searching local newspapers for a printed
voucher. This was then clipped and carefully carried into the mall and
presented to a very busy lady in the information booth. After standing in a
long line, you turned it in, showed your identification, and got $20 worth of
colorful (red, white and blue) coupons offering $1 for each $5 spent. And
this bonanza was repeated monthly. Part of the challenge was that many
stores offered goods at $4.99, and you had to carefully seek to find some
very inexpensive merchandise to get that one buck back.
Now it is different! There is no longer the exciting newspaper search.
Shoppers can go directly to the information booth with no long lines.
Identification is seldom requested. You get one yellow sheet with individual
$5 coupons and must spend $20 before getting $5 back. Oh, they just
improved it. You can also get $2 off when you spend $10. You can get these
sheets any day, so it doesn’t matter if any expire as you no longer need to
wait a month. Where is the fun? Where is the challenge? It just isn’t the same!
So – what can be done? It is not enough to wring our hands, or even sign
petitions. It is easy to moan, but difficult to offer solutions, but here is a try.
I think the residents of Wynmoor - - but why stop there – the residents of
Coconut Creek, or Pompano, or Broward County (you get the idea), should
pool our resources and buy the building.
Think of the benefits, even if it is just for Wynmoor. If there are empty

Fashion designers of the past.
1. Lena Bryant Malsin 1879-1951. The founder of
the Lane Bryant stores immigrated from Lithuania
to New York at age 16. She earned a $1 a week in a
sweatshop. After being widowed and with a young son,
she had enough money saved to open her own shop.
A bank clerical error listed her as “Lane” instead of
“Lena,” and the rest is history.
2. Ida Cohen Rosenthal 1886-1973. This immigrant
from Belarus created the Maidenform bra.
3. Hattie Carnegie 1886-1956. Hattie Kanengeiser
migrated to NY from Vienna with her family in 1902.
She started working in Macy’s at age 13 and took
the last name of Carnegie. She began a hat making
business with Rose Roth and started going to Paris to
buy high end goods to sell in her shop. Lucille Ball
modeled for her.
4. Edith Head 1897-1951. With no experience, she
was hired by Paramount pictures in 1924. She won
eight Oscars for costume design. She was nominated
for a total of 35 Academy Awards.
5. Nettie Rosenstein 1890-1980. She built a million-
dollar company after settling in NY from Austria.
She designed for local department stores and became
famous for her little black dress and costume jewelry.
She designed Mamie Eisenhower’s 1953 Inaugural
Ball gown.
6. Giuliana Camerino 1920-2010 nee Cohen. She
was the inventor of the status handbag.
7. Judith Leiber 1921-2018. Born in Hungary she
married an American army sergeant after WW11. They

person on the receiving end thinks the same way, then both partners will
feel loved and appreciated and their emotional banks will have a deposit. If,
however, you have one person believing that gifts are a show of love and the
other thinking that picking up the dry cleaning is, we’re going to have two
unfulfilled people. The one who didn’t receive the gift and the one whose
trip to the cleaners was not appreciated. Neither partner here is going to feel
emotionally paid.
One very important difference is in what constitutes emotional intimacy.
I’ll use myself as an example. To me, closeness comes from intimate
conversation. These conversations can be intellectual as well as emotionally
revealing. They come from sharing ideas, philosophies, theories, experiences,
and opinions as well as intimate and personal feelings. This would be true
for me in any relationship whether with friends, my daughters, spouse, etc.
This was also true when I ran groups and watched people blossom because
they were able to share their deepest selves and their ideas and learn to accept
the revelations of others. For me, this is what it means to be ‘in relationship’
with another person and this is what fosters intimacy and caring for another.
When I don’t have that I can only reach a certain level of relationship which
may be fine in casual friendships and acquaintanceships, but those relations
cannot and will not deepen. Of course, I also tend to pay in that same currency
and although I can and do pay in all forms of emotional currency, they are
not primary for me.
Another important currency is time. Some people require spending a great
deal of time with the other and some need much less. If you believe that the
amount of time spent together should be a primary factor of the relationship,
being with someone with many other interests who doesn’t have the same
time requirements you do will make you both unhappy. You will see time
spent doing other things as a rejection of you and the other will find your
demands suffocating and neither of you will be filling your emotional bank.
Time spent together is definitely an important factor in relationships. It
is difficult to feel loved and cared for when the person you want to be with
hasn’t the time to spend with you. The important thing to look at here is
desire. If the other person has a time-consuming job or other necessary
demands but you know you are valued and the desire to spend the time with
you is there, it is quite different than being with someone who is fitting you
in to a whimsical schedule, seeing you when he/she feels like it or when it
is convenient. Trying to receive something from someone who is unable to
give it is a major effort in frustration and futility for both people involved.
Another example and method of payment is paying with physical affection
and/or compliments. This comes naturally to some people and is very difficult
for others both to give and to receive. Again, if the balance of desire and
need does not match you will be in for a rough ride.
To be paid in your own currency is to experience yourself as loved, valuable,
important, cared for, psychologically visible and a real part of a relationship.
To be paid in a way that is less important to you or even in a way you might
not even notice leads to feeling invisible as your deepest self and when you
feel invisible you cannot feel loved and cared for. Imagine having your
emotional currency bank depleted and then imagine it overflowing. Quite
a difference.
Due to space constraints, I have shortened this extensively but hopefully
you got the idea and can come up with your own currencies and listen to the
important people in your life about theirs.
