was a place of assembly, a Bet Ha Knesset. But I imagined that it designated
something very general. The “paths of righteousness,” the “valley of the
shadow of death,” the “House of the Lord,” frightened me, yet I silently began
to savour the richness of the English language. It would be only some years
later before I knew enough Hebrew, in my Gomorrah studies, and enough
about English in the high school period, to understand that the King James
Version’s peculiar way of translating the Hebrew led to all sorts of allegorizing.
The paths of righteousness, what were they? Were they the paths that led to
a place--alas, somewhat distant called Righteousness? Were they the paths
someone named Righteousness used to take, while on some business or just
meandering on a road; and where, with guidance, one might get to walk too?
Will these crooked, often difficult paths, if one is led along them properly,
make one righteous and become a contributing person? A better Jew? I am
now firmly convinced they could.

Wood Shop of Wynmoor

By Barry Burns

During the last monthly breakfast meeting of the 2016-2017 season, the Wood Shop gave out our yearly Scholarships. The Scholarship Fund was
started many years ago by Murray Waldstein. For the last 5 years, this Scholarship was presented to graduating students of Coconut Creek High
School. (Left to Right) Sheryl Garfield, the Coconut Creek High School Coordinator; Anderson Gonzalues, who will be attending Pratt University
and study Art; Julienson Medor, who will be studying Electrical and Electronic engineering at the University of North Florida; Rontaza Shuman, who
will be a Music Major studying at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University; and Guy Zannini, President of the Wood Shop.

At the breakfast meeting, the students each received a Certificate and a handmade pen. Also in attendance was Murray’s wife, Phyllis Waldstein,
his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Brad Waldstein and Neil Nota, first Vice President of Wynmoor. Members of the Wood Shop pledged to
continue the “Murray Waldstein Scholarship Fund.” Donations to the Fund can be made at the Wood Shop, marked “Scholarship Fund.”

Skillful Listening
and Speaking

Our words and expressions are very powerful. Think about how you feel
when someone gives you “the look,” or rolls their eyes after you say some-
thing. This can create as an angry response, feelings of resentment, or the

construction of a wall for self-protection. A chain of accusations or hurt can

follow. On the other hand, if someone listens and tells you they appreciate

what you said, the connection is strengthened, trust increases and inside you

feel uplifted. Carl Rogers said, “When a person realizes he has been deeply
heard, his eyes moisten. I think in some real sense he is weeping for joy.”

Are there ways we can be more skillful in our conversations with others?

With acquaintances, we often make an effort and delay a knee jerk reaction

to their words. Why is it harder to be patient with family members or friends?

Jung says, “Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an
understanding of ourselves.” This is a clue to ways we can use our reactions
of anger and annoyance to grow and change ourselves. It helps us to become

better communicators because we try harder to understand the other person

and learn about our own projections and triggers.

What is listening? It is not pretending to listen and wait it out till it’s your
turn. Think how you feel inside when you want to tell someone something

that’s important to you. But, that doesn’t mean you have to agree with the
other person. It takes a genuine effort to hear someone out, even if you are

biting your tongue! There is something inside of us that wants to be right and
that interferes with listening. Psychologists and philosophers call this the

ego. It takes courage to question our values, assumptions and judgments. It’s
hard not to finish someone’s sentence inwardly, as we assume we know what
they’re going to say. This takes practice, patience and openness.

Brian Muldoon said, “Listening doesn’t happen by itself. It takes a
conscious decision and a willingness to release the distraction of “being

right.” In learning how to listen, we develop the virtues of patience and

even humility.”
Speaking is an art that requires sensitivity to how the person receives what

you say. No one wants to be “talked at.” If you talk in very long paragraphs,
people my feel you are giving a lecture or speech. Make it more conversa-

tional and check in with the person to see what they think and if what you are

saying makes sense to them. Eye contact helps and you can see if someone’s
eyes glaze over as you speak. Martin Buber in the classic book, “I and Thou”
speaks about how monologue is I and It whereas dialogue means I and Thou.

I have a good friend who loves talking about psychology, philosophy and

questions of meaning. But, sometimes he will go into quantum physics and
get abstract. I see my tendency is to tune out at that point. I’ve been making
an effort lately to let him know that it’s over my head and to ask him to give
some concrete examples. This means to admit that I am lost.

If you’re speaking with grandchildren or your kids, be aware that they prob-
ably are going to be multitasking. They may be texting at the same time and
you probably won’t have their full attention. Can you find a way to engage
on their level? If you aren’t sure how to connect to a teen or someone in their
twenties, ask them about your phone! They can show you features of your
phone you didn’t know about and also apps that you might find interesting
too. Enter into someone’s world and let them open it up for you. This can
deepen the bond and reduce the generation gap.

Michel Singer said, “Imagine if you used relationships to get to know
other people, rather than to satisfy what is blocked inside of you. If

you’re not trying to make people fit into your preconceived notions of
what you like and dislike, you will find that relationships are not really
that difficult.”

Enjoying Italian Art in

lots of gold leaf), Giovanni Dei Biondo, and Sano di Pietro (International
Gothic style), among others. These paintings employed tempera, gold leaf, and

wood panel and they were devotional in subject matter. I also saw splendid

sculpture from this period by Giovanni di Balduccio (“Madonna and Child”),
Nino Pisano (marble), and Bonino Campione.

I also appreciated its delightful collection of Italian Renaissance which also

used gold leaf by Sassetta, Fra Angelico (“Virgin Annunciate”), and Neri Di

paintings by Jacopo Da Montagnana, Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio,
Butinone (“Massacre of the Innocents”) Parmigiano (“Circumcision”), and
Giulio Romano, among others, which used oil to produce their paints mixed
with earthly pigments. Most of these works were done in the 15th Century or
early 16th Century. I also saw quality sculpture by Donatello and Luca Della
Robbia.

I relished its fine collection of later works which employed Mannerism,
especially those done by Michangelo Merisi de Caravaggio (“Martha and Mary
Magdalene”, awesome light effects), Guido Reni, Guercino, Manfredi, Orazio
Gentileschi, Artemesia Gentileschi (female Italian Renaissance painter), and
Pensionante Del Saraceni (“Fruit Seller”), among others. Most of these works
were done on canvas.

As for the 18th Century, I saw fine Italian oil paintings by Canaletto, Bellotto,
Sigismundo Coccapani, and Giovanni Paolo Pannini (“Roman Colisseum,”
fine Neoclassicism), among others, plus fine sculpture by Benzoni.

I highly recommend this art museum. On the last time that I visited Detroit,

I spent 3 enriching days there.

towards lunch.

On July 23, tickets must be reserved to see “Minnie’s Boys” at the Stage

cost made us so popular. The US Club success is due to the army of volun-
teers, having fun while planning

and working each function. Now we have to set our minds working for

another great season, starting in November. We hope you have a wonderful

and healthy summer and be ready to have another season of fun.

Paul Hannigan from Pennsylvania.

Paul finds his nitch in whittling and hand carving. Lately, he has carved a
fighting fish, sailor plaque, dolphins, several birds and a large sailing ship.

showcase out front of the shop.

President, Guy Zannini, a U.S. Army Veteran, has created a wood replica
of our first American Flag with miniature shapes of the thirteen original
colonies. They are sealed with epoxy; this is truly a masterpiece. These
creations can be viewed in the showcase in time for Memorial Day. The
