February 3rd, Thai Veterans’ Day
February 3rd is the Thai Veterans’ Day. Let’s take a moment of silence
and remember the bravery of Thai veterans in the past battles.
The Thai Veterans’ Day is the commemoration date for the foundation
of the War Veterans Organization of Thailand on February 3rd, 1948. The
organization, which is under the Thai Ministry of Defense, had the initial
mission of taking care of the WWII veterans and their families such as
their post-service lives, financial aid, medical care benefits, rights, and
recognition of their selfless sacrifice for the country. Today, its mission
includes serving those who served includes the police, civil servants, and
civilians who work to protect Thailand’s sovereignty domestically and
internationally through the United Nations.
On this day, the official remembrance services take place at Victory
Monument in Bangkok along with parades from all military branches.
One of the highlights is the red poppy flowers, which are the symbol of
peace and veteran’s bravery. The flowers can be purchased from the
related vendors and the money goes to support veterans and their
families.

28 December is observed as “King Taksin Memorial Day” marking the
coronation anniversary of King Taksin the Great in 1767.
“King Taksin the Great” or “King of Thon Buri” was the leader in the liberation of
Siam from the enemy occupation in 1767, and the subsequent unification of
Siam after it fell under various warlords. He established the city Thonburi as the
new capital. Although warfare took up most of King Taksin the Great’s time, He
paid a great deal of attention to politics, administration, economy, art,
education and the welfare of the people. In recognition of his benevolence, the
people of the country reverently added “Maharaj” (The Great) to His title.
Phra Racha Wang Derm or Thon Buri Palace is the only palace built by King
Taksin the great in 1768. It was built on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River
near the old Wichayen Fort which was later renamed Wichaiprasit Fort. Later,
when King Rama I ascended to the throne, the capital was moved to the east
bank of the Chao Phraya River, and a new royal palace was constructed. Thon
Buri Palace became known as Phra Racha Wang Derm (the original palace).
Because of its strategic location, the King placed important royal family
members in Phra Racha Wang Derm. This practice continued until King Rama V.
When Prince Chakrapadipongse, the last occupant, passed away, King Rama
V graciously bestowed the palace to the Royal Thai Navy to be used as the site
of the Naval Academy. Specific instructions were given to preserve ancient sites
such as the Throne Hall, King Pinklao's residence, King Taksin's Shrine and the
Whale Head Shrine. The Naval Academy remained at Phra Racha Wang Derm
until 1944 when it was moved to Sattahip and Kledkaew. Then it was moved to
its current location in Samutprakarn in 1952.The Academy building, which was
originally built in western style, was remodeled into a Thai style and has housed
the Royal Thai Navy Headquarters up to the present.

December 19th is the Birthday Anniversary of Admiral Prince Abhakara
Kiartivongse who has been reverently recognized as “the Father of Thai
Navy” or as “Sadej Tia” (Thai: เสด็จเตย; lit. Lord Father), and also known as
ี
“Mor Phon" (Thai: หมอพร; lit. Doctor Phon).
As a young boy, he went to study Naval Science in England and returned
with the strong determination to strengthen and develop the naval force of
the country. Because of his vision and the strong foundation that he laid for
the navy, the Thai naval force has greatly and continuously improved and
grown stronger. His ability in medical field was also widely recognized and
appreciated.
He is the real role model of determination and dedication as the above-
mentioned rhyme he wrote and also his well-known line in Bali, “Ka-yi-ra-je
Ka-yi-ra-te-nang,” which means “do things with all your might.”

King Chulalongkorn The Great led several major reforms in Thailand
and improved the citizens' standard of living in many ways. Hence,
His Majesty King Chulalongkorn has been recognized as "Somdet
Phra Piya Maharat" which means "the Beloved Great King" due to
the people's gratitude and reverence towards His benevolence.

The people’s faith in Buddhism is reflected in many rituals (พิธีกรรมทางศาสนา)
and festivals passed on from generation to generation. Among them is the
candle festival (ประเพณแห่เทยนพรรษา), which is celebrated to mark the start of the
ี
ี
Buddhist Lent as a tribute to the Buddhist Triple Gem (พระรัตนตรัย).
During the three-month period, which is in the rainy season in Thailand,
Buddhist monks and novices stay in the temple to study and practice Dhamma
(ศกษาพระธรรมคาสอน) and do not stay overnight (คางแรม) at any other places. The

custom for monks to spend the three months of the rainy season in a fixed
place has been observed since the time of the Buddha. In those days,
unnecessary travel by monks during this period could damage young
seedlings planted by villagers.
Due to the pandemic (การระบาดใหญ), it might not be suitable for Thais to make

merit (ทาบญ) at the local temples as we usually do. As a result, we would like to
ุ
ํ
encourage you to do another way of merit making such as donation.
Donation (การบริจาค) is one of the best ways of merit-making. As in Buddhism,
Buddhists believe that giving serves as a way to eliminate (กาจัด) our greed
ํ
ุ
(ความโลภ) and ill-will (ความม่งร้าย ) and also to reduce attachment (ลดความยึดมั น
ถอมั น).
ื
Now, more than ever, health workers need our support. Healthcare systems
are overwhelmed (เกนจะรับไหว). Hospitals and healthcare charities are doing all

they can to ensure they can care for all COVID-19 patients as the number of
infected patients (ผู้ตดเชื อ) are continued to rise and there’s no sign of it

stopping just yet.

Each year, usually in the month of July, Buddhist Thais
nationwide join merit-making (การทาบญ) and other religious

activities to mark two significant days: Asalha Bucha and
Buddhist Lent Day.
Asalha Bucha Day is a special Buddhist holiday in Thailand
marking the day when the Lord Buddha delivered his first
sermon(แสดงธรรมปฐมเทศนา) at Benares in India over 2,500 years
ago. The exact date of the holiday is determined by the waxing
moon (ข้างขึน) and the lunar months.

More broadly, the holiday is a celebration of beginnings,
commemorating not just the Buddha’s first sermon
(ธรรมปฐมเทศนา) but also his conception and the day he
renounced his royal life to become an ascetic.This day is an
auspicious one to begin a new venture or renew lapsed
resolutions.
Asalha Bucha is followed by Vassa (Phansa-Bhuddhist Lent),
it is known in Thai as khao phansa, which marks the beginning
of the annual three-month Buddhist Lent, or Buddhist Rains
Retreat. It falls on the first day of the waning moon (ข้างแรม) of
the eighth lunar month.

“Once a Marine, Always a Marine.”
The Royal Thai Marine Corps Day is held on 28 June. It's an
important day for all Royal Thai Marines personnel and an
important chapter in the history of the RTMC. In 1952, His Majesty
King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great composed the "Royal
Marines March" and granted the permission for the RTMC to use
this Royal Composition as the official march song
on 28 June 1952.

The Ocean: Life & Livelihoods
June 8 was designated as World Oceans Day by the UN General Assembly
in 2008 in order to raise the awareness about the importance of our oceans
and all sorts of problems that are deteriorating our sole source of life. Imagine
an ocean with polluted water, no marine life, and extreme temperature. How is
it possible to sustain humanity in such world? To emphasize that our lives
depend on the oceans, this year's theme is "The Ocean: Life & Livelihoods". This
year's celebration of the World Oceans Day will be held virtually featuring
speeches from renowned leaders, celebrities, experts, and more from around
the world.

“Abhakara Memorial Day”
Royal Thai Navy marks May 19th of each year as “Abhakara Memorial Day”
to commemorate the passing of Admiral Prince Abhakara Kiartivongse who
has been highly respected as “The Father of Thai Navy.” He spent his early
years studying naval warfare in England and returned to Siam to serve in the
Royal Siamese Navy. Through his suggestions, western subjects, such as
Astrology, Algebra, Geometry, and Hydrography, have been incorporated in
the curriculum of naval studies since then. His significant contributions
resulted in the advancement and modernization of the navy.
He is the real role model of determination and dedication as the rhyme
below and also his well-known line in Bali, “Ka-yi-ra-je Ka-yi-ra-te-nang,”
which means “do things with all your might.”

Around the world, the International Nurses Day, is celebrated on May 12,
the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of
modern nursing. It also marks the contributions that nurses make to
society and serves to highlight the important role nurses fulfill in health

fiercely against the COVID-19 to save lives of the world population.

On behalf of the Royal Thai Navy Language Center (RTNLC), we would like to
send our best wishes to all Thai people during Songkran holidays in 2021.
Songkran Day has been considered the traditional Thai New Year's Day since
ancient times. Not only it is an annual holiday for public and private sectors, but
it is also a meaningful family time filled with an atmosphere of gratitude,
respect, warmth, and fun. This year, the government already declared April 10-15
as Songkran holidays.
Unfortunately, as the COVID-19 outbreak is still ongoing during this time, all
activities that may attract large gatherings of people, such as water splashing
and powder smearing, are banned, according to the Centre for the
Administration of the Situation due to the Outbreak of the Communicable
Disease Coronavirus (COVID-19). However, we can hold some religious practices
and traditional ceremonies at home as usual. These include sprinkling water on
Buddha statues and pouring scented water onto the palms and feet of parents
and other respected elders to ask for their blessings.
To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, RTNLC would like to remind our
beloved fans to strictly follow the control measures of DMHTT which are
distancing (D), mask wearing (M), hand washing at key times with soap and
water or hand sanitizer that contains at least 70% alcohol (H), testing by
temperature check (T), and downloading Thaichana application (T) during
Songkran holidays.

Chakri Memorial Day, commonly known as “Chakri Day,"
is the day we express gratitude to the Chakri dynasty’s
benevolence, as well as commemorate the founding of
Bangkok, and the beginning of Rattanakosin era.
On April 6 1782, King Phra Buddha Yodfa the Great (King
Rama I), the first king of the Chakri Dynasty ascended the
throne. He also moved the capital from Krung Thon Buri on
the west bank of the Chao Phraya River to the east.
The reasons behind the move are:
Krung Thon Buri, the previous capital, is situated at the
bend of the river and is subject to land erosion.
The wide bend enclosing the eastern side of the river
makes the new location more defensible.
The east bank of the river is suitable for seaborne trade and
commerce, as well as the expansion of the city.

“King Phra Maha Jesada Raj Chao Memorial Day”
King Nangklao or Rama III was the third monarch of Siam in
Chakri Dynasty, ruling from 21 July 1824 to 2 April 1851. He
succeeded his father, King Rama II, as the King of Siam.
King Nangklao or Rama III was born on 31 March 1788. He later
served his father as Komma Tha (Minister of Trade and Foreign
Affairs.) As Komma Tha, he developed proficiency in foreign
trade and affection for Chinese goods and culture.
During his reign, the trade between Siam and China became
prosperous. With his trading skill, he managed to set a large sum
of money aside as the country's emergency fund. The money
was kept in red purses; subsequently, it was known as “Red Purse
Money.”
The cabinet then stipulated that 31 March of each year is the
"King Phra Maha Jesada Raj Chao Memorial Day to
commemorate His Majesty’s benevolence.

7 January is observed as “King Pinklao Memorial Day.”
H.M. King Pinklao was recognized as the Second King of Siam with equal
honor to his brother H.M. King Mongkut (King Rama IV).
At the age of 16, he served in his father’s office, H.M. King Phutthaloetla
Naphalai (King Rama II), so well and received many praises for his
professional accomplishments. During the reign of King Rama III, he was the
advisor in foreign negotiations which is the fruit of his devotion to study the
English language, western customs and traditions.
When H.M. King Mongkut (King Rama IV) ascended to the throne, he was
appointed the head of the Front Palace. However, his rank was elevated to
the Second King who went by the name of "Phra Bat Somdetch Phra Pinklao
Chao Yoo Hua.”
H.M. King Pinklao was involved in the nation’s Navy since the reign of King
Rama III. He became the first admiral and laid the foundations of today’s
Royal Thai Navy. He was well-rounded in internal and foreign affairs. His
fluency in English helped him introduce western knowledge and technology
for the benefit of the people, such as in the field of science, medicine,
education, and art.
7 January is observed as “King Pinklao Memorial Day”, which is the
anniversary date of his death.
