MESSAGE FROM FACULTY EDITOR Sheila Raheja Institute Of Hotel Management Intrapersonal Communication All through our lives we are taught how to communicate with others but are never trained or told how to communicate with ourselves. So today I am writing about changing your intrapersonal communication or what I would call your ‘self-talk’. Early on in our lives we readily accept the messages from the authority figures we know and interact with. You were probably told by well-meaning adults in your lifethat ‘you will not do anything good with your life’ or probably even the reverse may be true where we have a family member or friends encouraging us in our endeavours and speaking life into our dreams! Whatever it was that was said, these early messages contribute to our self-talk. The way we talk to ourselves inwardly is really important because it becomes the basis of our spoken words which can affect the state of our mind and eventually alter our life. The words we speak to ourselves create our world. It sets up the mental atmosphere in which we operate and attracts experiences and people to us. So, if our self-talk is positive and weencourage ourselves by saying ‘yes I can do it’ or ‘I will achieve my dreams’, on a consistent basis, we will see our dreams coming into fruition and our life unfolding beautifully. A life with its triumphs, trials and tribulations but leading to our personal growth. Our words have great power. So here are a few simple but powerful steps to changethe way wecommunicateto ourselves
●Start listening closely to what you say to yourself. ●If you hear yourself using negative or limiting words, change them to encouraging ones. ●Put aside allcriticism and negativeself-talk. ● Let go of your old mind-set, the one that berates you and resists change. It has not worked so far. Try something new. ●Release other people’s opinions of you. ●Wake up each morning with a prayer and a heart full of gratitude for the wonderful life you have. ● Write down 3 things you are grateful for. You can increase the number as time goes by. ●Look in the mirror and affirm: ‘Whatever I say to myself, I say it with love”. ● Start communicating to yourself, in a loving manner, all the things that you would tell, if you weretalking to a dear friend. Change your self-talk one word at a time and slowly but surely transform your life one day at a timefor the better! Cheers to new ways of self-lovethrough self-talk!
