a market shooting star to one of sustainable growth.
“The investment case for De Grey is clear and compelling,”
Jardine told Paydirt. “We are discovering gold that has a val-
ue that is orders of magnitude greater than its single digit dis-
covery cost. The value of the gold being discovered is being
driven by a combination of scale, grade, continuity, geometry
and proximity to surface. Added to this is the demonstrated
potential to find more of the same.”
What is remarkable is how uniform the enthusiasm for
the Hemi discovery has been. Most new discoveries are re-
ceived with a healthy bout of scepticism to balance out the
backers but since the early hits of 24m @ 7.5 g/t gold, 49m @
3.7 g/t and 36m @ 4 g/t on the Brolga zone and 24m @ 4.2
g/t, 15m @ 2.5 g/t and 21m @ 2.5 g/t from the Aquila zone
at Hemi, De Grey has enjoyed widespread support with con-
sensus among Australian resource analysts that, even at this
early stage, Hemi contains a minimum 1 moz gold. As early
as March 26, analysts at Argonaut Securities – which led the
recent capital raising – were predicting Hemi could contain
1.9-2.8 moz gold.
This is a bullish appraisal of a prospect which has seen
only 12 weeks of RC and diamond drilling. The company itself
has been careful not to make any ambitious claims, choosing
instead to focus on the business of defining the orebodies.
However, De Grey technical director Andrew Beckwith isn’t
completely surprised by the response.
“There are still a few sceptics but what surprised me was
how many people got on board during the aircore drilling,
even though I knew they were very spectacular results,” he
told Paydirt.
“The comments we get from all the investors now is ‘This is
going to be a mine.’ Right from the start investors automati-
cally thought it would be mined.”
Fostering the confidence of investors is the mineralisation
style of Hemi.
“It is something very new for the Pilbara and if you think of
intrusives, they tend to be big orebodies. So, once we did the
RC drilling at Brolga and in those seven holes demonstrated
exceptional thickness with good grades, it became pretty
easy to get your mind around what it could likely be.”
It is a far cry from four years ago when Beckwith arrived at
De Grey with the company seemingly adrift in a tough mar-
ket.
“Chairman Simon Lill probably never gets the pat on the
back he deserves for his role because we went through some
hard times,” Beckwith said. “We had a $1 million market
