• Having been last tournament for the year 2018, MS Ramaiah Memorial Parliamentary Debate
is the annual British Parliamentary Debate Tournament held by the MS Ramaiah Institute of
Technology every year in their campus in Bangalore, and was held between the 22nd of
September 2018 to the 24th of September 2018.
• The REC contingent consisted of 16 students from the 2nd and 3rd years respectively. The
students took the train from Chennai, the night of 21st September to reach Bangalore and
returned back to the city on the morning of the 25th after the tournament.
• The performance of the students at the tournament was remarkable with one adjudicator
breaking into semi-finals. Neil Joy Janfy, 3rd-year Automobile was the first ever adjudicator
from the REC Debating Union to ever break in at MSRMPD.
• The overall performance of the contingent was a good one with most of our debating teams
being within the top 30.
• The whole experience was one to remember and was a blessing for all the budding debaters
who were looking to up their ante in the field of debating.

• With the end of a year filled with meets and tournaments came new year, bringing along with
it a fresh new batch of debaters. The initiation day for the first years of the 2018-2022 batch
took place on the 29th of January 2019 and was held to commemorate the successful
induction of first years into the Debating Union. It was held at the Main Seminar Hall from
3pm.
• The Initiation day started with the president of REC Debating union, Nischay Vegi explaining
what Debating Union expects from its members and what the members can expect from the
Debating Union. He also spoke about the formats that are predominantly followed in the
debating circuits in India. Next, the Vice President Vaishali R gave a very brief introduction
about the format of British Parliamentary debate. She was assisted by the Event Manager,
Vaibavi J, who explained the nuances in the popular format. Next the crowd was addressed by
the Secretary of the REC Debating Union Arvind Vignesh, who gave a very brief idea about
another important part in the art of debating: Adjudication. In the end, the members of the
DU were briefed about the rules and regulations of the club that they will be expected to
follow.
• After the briefing was over, the crowd were given a motion to test their ability of
understanding and it was received with great enthusiasm.
After this, the whole core and the members of the club geared up for the bringing about of at
of Words. Marking the end of a successful tenure was WoW 2019, held on the 11th of
February, with great pomp and galore. All in all, it was an amazing year for the REC Debating
Union, and the legacy is waiting to be carried forward by the next batch.

Ethics Club of REC was started in the year 2012 under the direct instructions of out beloved
Chairperson Dr. Mrs. Thangam Meganathan. The idea behind the formation of the club was to
educate the students the importance of Ethics in the real world. As an engineer and a future holder
Ethics plays an inevitable part in everybodys life. In support of this mission, it was planned to conduct
frequent lecture programs with lectures given by internal as well as external speakers.
In the year 2018 – 2019 many such programs were conducted. On the eleventh of January 2018 a
lecture under the title “The Science of Perfection”, that contained the extracts of the Patanjali Yoga
Sutras that dealt with the prerequisite qualities required for a student to be successful both in the
mind and the body level. On 07.11.2018, a lecture under the topic Special Lecture
on Ethics and Hardwork was deliveredby our advisor Dr. C.R. Muthukrishnan. The lecture started by
defining the meaning of Ethics based on Thirikural and went deeper in the topic by giving a lot of
quotations from Mahabaratha and Ramayana. On 28.08.2018 a talk on the topic ‘Essentials for Success
in Life’was delivered by an invited speaker, Er. R. Natarajan, Director, Engineering Global Solutions,
Chennai. Mr. Natarajan shared a lot of his personal experiences in achieving success and in a way that
could be easily understood by the students.

Traffic Awareness Program on 23 September 2018 (Sunday) - No. of Participants : 103
The Youth Red Cross of Rajalakshmi Engineering College joined hands with the Care & Welfare
organization and conducted the Traffic Awareness Program at two important signals in Chennai
namely T-nagar signal and Thirumangalam signal. The students were assembled at Hotel Sudhara at
around 3:30 pm. The volunteers from the Care and Welfare gave us instructions as how to help the
pedestrains to cross the road.
Our students were seen holding placards depicting slogans like “WEAR HELMETS”, “DON’T DRINK
AND DRIVE”, “ WEAR SEAT BELTS” etc. In order to avoid accidents caused by the intensity of High
beam , few boys stuck black stickers on the headlights of vehicles. Students personally approached
each person driving 2-wheeler and advised them, to wear helmets and not to cross the white line. The
Traffic Awareness program concluded at 6pm and was much appreciated by the public and TRAFFIC
Policemen. The students were later asked to assemble at NatesanPark,where refreshments were
served.
Mega Beach Cleaning of Marina Beach on 30-09-2018

The Youth Red Cross of Rajalakshmi Engineering College joined hands with the Care & Welfare
organization for the Mega Beach Cleanup event from 5:30 to 8:30am . The students were asked to
assemble at the Kannagi’s statue. Later they were divided into groups to clean the beach at different
spots. They were instructed to pick up the litters and put it in the garbage bag. The students tirelessly
worked in the early hours of Sunday. The litters were segregated into degradable and non-degradable
wastes.

The Youth Red Cross of Rajalakshmi Engineering College, conducted an orphanage visit to
AnnaikumKarangal orphanage to oraganisePongalCeleberations with the children. Various games
were organized like lemon in the spoon. Kids enjoyed blowing balloons. Chocolates, Notebooks and
pens were distributed to all the kids. Few students helped the caretakers to serve lunch. Our staff
coordinator Mr.D.Joel along with few students, counseled the children there about different career
opportunities. It was a lovely sight to see the kids have fun.
Disaster Management Training Program on 30/01/2019
“We cannot stop natural disasters but we can arm ourselves with knowledge, so many lives wouldn't
have to be lost if there was enough disaster preparedness”
Keeping this in mind, The Youth Red Cross Club of Rajalakshmi Engineering College conducted
“Disaster Management Training Program” for the students in their 1st year. The program began with

• 79 students of UG programmes and 6 students of PG programmes of 2018 batch have secured
Anna University Ranks including one Gold Medal.
• Departments have secured a total project funding of Rs.50,43,980/- from external funding
agencies: (i) for projects on “Simple Screening Aid for Estimating Kidney Function” -
Department of Science and Technology, (ii) "Stress resistance and characterization of
exopolysaccharides secreted by oral bacterial biofilm communities: A target for developing
novel anti-biofilms therapeutics” - Engineering Research Board (SERB), Govt. of India and (iii)
'Increase the shelf life of padhaneer” - IITM under rural development scheme RuTAG.
• 18 faculty members of our college have obtained their Ph.D. degree for their thesis work in
various thrust areas.
• With dedicated involvement in Research activities in current areas of interest, our faculty
members have published 555 papers in reputed Internation and National Journals and
Conferences of which 137 papers are in the Scopus Indexed category. Apart from these, 7
book chapters and 4 books have also been published by them.
• Our college has been awarded “Excellence in fostering Industry-Academic Partenerships for
enabling careers in contemporary engineering sectors” certificate at Bangalore on 21-July-
2018 during NAFEMS Conference 2018.
• REC has received Academic Excellence Award from ICT Academy.
ICT Academy has been working through a seven pillar program in the areas of Faculty
Development, Student Skill Development, Entrepreneurship Development, Youth
Empowerment, Industry-Institute Interaction, Digital Empowerment and Research &
Publications.
• The Indian Concrete Institute Civil Engineering Student Chapter of Rajalakshmi Engineering
College, Chennai has been selected for the ICI (CC) – UltraTech Award – 2018 for
Outstanding Student Chapter (Chennai region) by the panel of judges constituted by Indian
Concrete Institute Chennai Centre.

• Rajalakshmi Engineering College, continues its climb in securing ranks in Anna University
examinations. REC improved its position and moved to 5th amongst 553 engineering colleges
in Tamilnadu
