|Page 2| Design III| Nathaniel Ayeni Modular Playhouse Design Year:2023 Instructor: Celso Urroz Type:Residential Status:Completed This endeavor was primarily undertaken under the context of design constraints- which was it needed to be 6 feet by 6 feet and it needed to be no more than 7 feet tall; the overarching motive, aswell, was to challenge the preconceived notions of what a playhouse is. From the schematic design to the design development and eventual construction, this project required the group as a whole to have to undergo a process-demanding and highly iterative task: to utlizate architectual design techniques(that had been learned in previous semesters) in order to create spaces that were unique, functional and ultimately specific to the south florida context.

By using unique prompt with the context in mind of a playhouse, A.I is used as a tool for design generation. The incorporation and the philosophy of creating insightful spaces was the clear goal of this model-crawl spaces and unique climbing angles.

Primarily we were focused on the element of crawl-spacoes: looking deeply on the experiential element of the design that the function itself. The spirit of the spaces were creating.

Rather than using preconceived rectilinear geometry, we decided to explore curvilinear elements within the playhouse. However, the core goal was still, the experiential spirit of the design itself. What was functional yet aesthetically pleasely to a child? This was the guiding question that would shape the way in which I encountered the schematic phase.

|Page 23| Design III| Nathaniel Ayeni Thesis: The focal point of this charrette was to build upon the previous charrette design- in the sense of being able to deftly use the given dimensional constraints of 6 x 6 x 7. While we were interested in curvaliner structures as a playhouse, we discovered that such method was not conducive for efficient utilization of space. To circumnavigate that dilemna, we played around with the blocks to create unique and well intentionalized spaces in both the above and below floor(crawl space).


|Page 24| Design III| Nathaniel Ayeni Work Flow: After being assigned specific tasks within the group, in my case the construction of the scaled physical model( 1”=1’), I worked with a group of three other students to bring our design as a collective into fruition. There was the design process- the actually design of the playhouse, which took roughly about 12 hours. The construction of the design itself also took about 12 hours as we had to tackle with complexities of having a thoroughly function and also architectural design that was inviting.

|Page 27| Design III| Nathaniel Ayeni Thesis Statement: This Charrette design was unique in this sense that both previous groups who were cojoined into one, had two very drastic design methodologies. This required a creative solution for the challenge. Group 7’s previous charrette design was one that was epitomized on the idea of functionality, which meant the thorough intentional utilization of every possible space, while Group 8’s previous charrette design was focused on the Aesthetical allure of playgrounds. This required a sort of common ground where there could be rigidity in the sense of utilization but also flexibility in the sense of crafting a uniquely harmonious and alluring design.


|Page 28| Design III| Nathaniel Ayeni WorkFlow: The task of having to come up with a new design after three previous charette design was challenging in the sense that there had to be compromises, which took quite some time. The phase of coming up with a design took around two days or so. It required continous revisions and a vetting process that I had not yet experienced. It was rewarding in the sense that it was a challenge that we has a group took on. The physical building of the project it self took about nine hours as a the physical group(tasked with building the physical model) was made up of six- eight individual who worked tremendously hard to make sure the execution of the project was seamless.

|Page 31| Design III| Nathaniel Ayeni Thesis: This phase of the program was more so focused on seek new opportunities to refine the design from charrette 4. In undergoing this endeavor we split into smallers groups within the larger groups- to come up with unique iterations for the base( charrette 4 being that). My group focused on having a sort of more organic flow to the design and seeking new moments of play with the pre-existing geometries of charrette 4.


|Page 32| Design III| Nathaniel Ayeni Work Flow: Having being assigned the task of getting into smaller groups, my groups immediately sought new ways of modifying the pre-existing design. We meticously dissected the designs from charrette 3 and 4 and even charrette 2, to see if new moments of opportunities could be exploited. The design process took a large portion of this project( around 10 hours of design development) and the physical building of the model took roughly around 2 hours.

|Page 35| Design III| Nathaniel Ayeni Thesis statement: Charrete 6 is the culmination of all the previous charrette- A closer step into finalizing the design of the playhouse. In this charrette we as a group focuesd on modularity, but more importantly we focused on many various iterations of how the playhouse could be arranged.

By also focusing our modularity and how the playhouse could be interpreted in various ways to tell a plethora of stories, we were able to have a solid foundation on how to improve our design. The design process took around two days or so, the building of the model itself took roughly around 5-7 hours.
