PEDAGOGICAL LEADERSHIP PRP TRAINING - A MEMOIR...

Published by

EDITORIAL

Pedagogical Leadership training is a milestone in the history of
education in India. The school leaders of India mostly practice any
one or more of these Leadership styles- Servant Leadership,
Transactional Leadership, Transformational Leadership, Emotional
Leadership and Instructional Leadership. However, the rapidly

changing dynamics of the 21st century in Education and all other

sectors , demanded a change in the leadership style of the school
Principals as well. To develop the 21st century skills in children like
Critical thinking, Creativity, Communication and collaboration, the
school leaders themselves are expected to lead by example and create a
culture of collaborative learning in the schools. In recent times school
leadership has moved further ahead to ‘Leadership for Learning’ (LFL)
where, in order to ensure that all students learn, everybody else in the
education system, has to continuously engage in learning.
Pedagogical Leadership (PL) Training for Prospective Resource
persons was organized by CBSE in collaboration with NIEPA. One
Hundred Seventy (170) School principals and Master Trainers of
different COEs participated in this programme to become the first
batch of Principals to be trained as pedagogical leaders. They, in turn,
will be training the Principals of other CBSE schools across the
country in the next few months. The Pedagogical leadership
movement to redefine the role of the school leadership has started with
a ‘Bang’ and I am sure that the impact of this bang will bring about a
paradigm shift in the education system of India.

This training was a very special one, thanks to Dr N.Mythili
and the core team members (Mrs.Ambika Gulati, Mrs.
Harpreet Kaur, Capt. Dinisha Bharadwaj, Mrs. Swarnima
Luthra, MRs.Sanchita Verma and Mrs. Seema Jerath ) who

conducted this training and are co – authors of the

Pedagogical Leadership handbook. This Memoir captures
the thoughts, feelings, opinions and ‘Aha’ moments of the
participants. I am thankful to all those Pedagogical leaders
who contributed in the making of this ‘Pedagogical
Leadership – a Memoir’ flipbook . I strongly believe that
this flipbook will have a great historical significance as it
documents the impact the PL training created on the ‘Pilot
batch’ of Principals to transform them into not only
pedagogical leaders but also ‘Change Makers’ who will bring
about the transformation in the style of schools Leadership
of all the CBSE schools in the country.

Foreword

 Pedagogical Leadership is one of the most important areas of
school education in India. It is a sought after role for all school
principals in India today. The vision of transforming principals from

administrative role to pedagogical leaders is one of the major

policy decisions made by the Government of India in National
Education Policy, 2020. The role of Madam Anita Karwal, Secretary
School Education in shaping the pedagogical leadership is
undeniably very high. Under her inspirational leadership
developing the Pedagogical leadership framework, Annual
Pedagogical Plan and their related training materials took the
shape of developing a comprehensive handbook. Sri Manoj Ahuja,
the current chairman of the CBSE, did not lag behind in continuing
his support. He ensured that the pedagogical leadership of
principals is never lost amidst myriad events of everyday chores
and pressures.

 As a core team, we wanted to prove that not only the book was
written well, but also the training programme being able to
translate the intent of the book effectively to have a deeper impact
among principals. The attempt was to redefine the notion and
transform the method of doing training for principals in India with
clearly defined expected outcomes and achieving it at the end of
the programme. In this programme, it was to develop and present
the annual pedagogical Plan for the school developed within the
workshop. This memoir is a collection of the result our attempts to
transform the understanding and notion of principal as a leader in
general and pedagogical leader in particular.

 Participants of the workshop held by CBSE in collaboration
with NIEPA have expressed their experience of having
undergone the training during 5 days with their lingering

memories on pedagogical leadership. This memoir captures

the experience of 170 participants working in various CBSE
schools across India, who themselves are excellent leaders
having proved their worth and master trainers for various
training programmes of CBSE. I along with core team
members are grateful for all those who shared their
experiences and feelings for the memoir. I get at least one
message a day from the participants even to this day. By
itself this has been a living experience of the 5 day training
programme day after day , everyday.

The PL workshop was a paradise for Pedagogies enthusing in me a great zeal,
It led to reflection and renewal through ‘unlearning’ and ‘relearning’ what I feel.

R– Reflections and renewal was the main element each day,

‘leadership for learning’ is the right and pragmatic way.

E– Engaging teachers professional development is the need of the hour,

Training Need Analysis can surely empower.

F– Free flow of ideas in chat box & padlet were a classroom in its own,

Too much of learning made us feel sailing in an enrichment zone.

L–‘Leading schools’ to ‘Leading Learning’ enthused a new zeal,

Developing learning culture and leading TLP gave me great feel.

E– Ethical compass revealed strengthening of moral literacy,

Learnt to distinguish integrity from morality and effectiveness from efficacy.

C– Counting on 5Ws while developing SMART goals was an amazing key,

Meeting our future self helped us envision ‘what we are’ and ‘what we want to be’.

T– Teaching of 21st centaury skills to be incorporated in curriculum at school,

including best practices and innovation in pedagogy can serve a great tool.

I– Insight of WHAT, HOW and WHY layers of PL framework showed us the path and purpose,

After gaining knowledge and skill, virtue is now what we need to focus.

O– Overcome Cumulative Learning Deficit is what I felt the need,

Drafting Annual Pedagogical Plan with staff is the best way indeed.

N–Never-ending discussions during pre and past session and lunch break,

helped me discover the path for LfL that I need to take.

S– Shift from ‘Engaging Students’ to ‘Empowering Learners’ was an eye opener,

Seeking enlightment to the RIGHT leadership through this workshop was
a great honor

Thanking all my Mentors!

Learning is another name of expansion and the only way to bridge up
between where we are …. and where we have to go. The whole team of
resource persons ignited a spark to think , realise and act in a modified
manner.
One of the biggest transformation in my professional life took place after
attending the session of pedagogical leadership. I would like to express that
journey of transformation through the lines below.

The month of July ,took me high,
as provided me wings to fly
Amidst the silence of pandemic
Some sound seemed to echo
Even when there was no wind ,birds had stopped chirping
Learning made my way,
Characters would always stay
With all smirks and smile ,would thank everyone for creating miles

So much of excitement, fun and learning!

The workshop on Pedagogical Leadership was indeed

enriching. There were so many concrete takeaways
that we can implement to augment our teaching-
learning processes, some of them - absolute must
haves for schools.
The Resource Persons with their varied experiences
simply added to the enlightening discussion during
the interaction with the participants.
Even the participants - selected 170 school leaders
contributed so much to the learning exchange.
Overall, it was truly a wonderful opportunity... would
remain excited for the next one...

heading in right direction but without a GPS….. Training
provided a clear roadmap to reach the destination….. Have
to build ‘I can make a difference’ attitude in my teachers

stakeholders specially involving alumni…. Take wise ‘Data

An insightful journey to discover my Raison d'être as a School Leader.

The five days of Pedagogical Leadership training was the best thing that
happened to me as a school leader and the timing of the training webinar
couldn’t have been better as we are heading towards the implementation of
NEP in letter and spirit. It made me reflect on whether or not I’m fulfilling the
core functions of Leadership namely influence others, direct others, empower
others or working with others. It made me also take a stock of my leadership
style. What impressed me most was the Pedagogical Leadership framework for
Leading Learning. It gave me a deeper insight into the over arching concept, Key
functions and the processes that need to be followed to be an effective
Pedagogical Leader. The Annual Pedagogical plan template made me analyse
the 5Ws needed for preparing an impactful Pedagogical plan. All I can say is that
these five days of learning made me self aware to a certain extent and made me
curious to know more, be more & do more. The Best part about this was the
fact that we learnt it all from the very creators of the Handbook of pedagogical
Leader Dr N. Mythili and her team themselves and I couldn’t have asked for
more.

“…it’s not just learning that’s
Important. It’s learning what

to do with what you learn

programme would help me build on my existing stand points. Fortuitously,
the first phase helped me to revisit those set notions and realign my

visions into achievable goals and convert theory into practice.

The Learning Sojourn

Being involved in active learning sessions for six
continuous days was like a “long drive” for me.
The online sessions were truly engrossing and

engaging, at times challenging, yet the learning

was truly amazing and overwhelming. “Difficult
roads often lead to beautiful destinations”, it is
said. Navigating the entire course work, and the
intense attention needed to attend all online
sessions sounded like a humongous task but the
learning was immensely fruitful.

The sessions often led me to critically reflect on my
style of working as a school leader. The entire
learning experience was a sojourn of self-
awareness where the ‘actionables’ have
veraciously enabled me and empowered me. The
key takeaway for me was the novel insight towards
the need of shared vision of all stakeholders of the
institution.

I am now constantly reminded of the Six
Thinking Hats of Edward de Bono and as a school
leader, I need to wear these hats often.

Indelible Memories worthy to remember !

July 1 was indeed a memorable day, an endeavour by team of the
brightest minds to brighten and illuminate the ignorant chambers of
around 170 pedagogical leaders to shape up the future of future
generations.

It lasted up to five days, each day filled with excitement and
enthusiasm to learn about innovation in learning and teaching
practices. Undoubtedly a welcome step taken by dynamic
intellectuals in transforming pedagogy by making all the
Pedagogical Leaders steer ahead on the grassy road of vision and
mission of school, by analyzing their own strengths and weaknesses.
Each and every day educated to tread on the path, with full
collaboration and cooperation to reach fruitful destination of
achieving definite direction and definition in the field of education.
Nurturing of Inclusive Education and enhancing Learning Culture was
also the foremost target of pedagogical skills.

The conclusion about the entire journey on entire route once again
restructured the minds that overcoming of challenges with proper
team work lies in the true, sincere and honest leadership of
Principal. It brought a metamorphic change and broadened the
outlook of pedagogical leaders. The memory that Principals only like
a potter can give shape and make students as versatile sculptures
with complete uniqueness and uniformity will never fade away.

STORY on PEDAGOGICAL LEADERSHIP TRAINING

Just thought it will be one more training program but
NO it was different ! (it has made me write a memoir)

The PEDAGOGICAL LEADERSHIP enterprise was no simple effort. It was a strong
force of 177 leaders. We became chatty, vociferous, padletty, menti-loving ..
bringing all our energy to focus on pedagogical leadership.

I relished the possibilities of continual ‘idea exchange’ and was immersed in the
discussions and presentations. Loved the way the team of 1+ 6 piloted the 5 day
program!

By creating this group - ‘social glue’ of leadership, irrefutably there will be a lot
of Brownian movement of interactions that will make us move forward. Thanks
Dr. Swarup Dutta for this networking. Hope Dr. Mythili will stoke up new
thinking…

It was the Capacity Development on Pedagogical Leadership

It was mentored by 6 exclusive educationalists,
It was tailored under the incomparable guidance of the Rock Star
Professor Mythili.

Learning was about building a shared vision, developing SMART
personal and professional goals,
Learning was about developing an inclusive learning culture and a
culture of innovation,
Learning was about becoming reflective practitioners,
Learning was about becoming a self-aware leader.

A memorable experience to think anew and do better

The voyage began on 1st July at 10:15am.On the board 170
selected enthusiastic sailors with a crew of 7 who resembled
the historical Megallans-the risk taker, the iconoclast , the

visionary, the warrior……..

Rather it was a pre-voyage training for the new sailors to
charter the direction and steer through the rough seas ,to
pursue against all odds ,to find the new worlds…..

The training is over ,I am with my ship………standing on the
deck I remember how stronger I have become, with proper
vision …..I know where I should take my ship-----I know now
that its not the ship that takes us –I must lead the ship……….

With gratitude I remember those training sessions which
taught the A to Z of sea faring……great trainers make great
sailors -----though the situations are unique process is the
same ..I feel elated to sea other happy mariners in the mid
sea 1,2,3 …169 of them shoulder rose and head high
cheerfully leading their ships of varied size and
shapes…….no compass, no binoculars in hand, only with the
new device

the Madh-s3 …an innovation..

Oh I must stop as the same device in me- the Madh-s3
warns not to cross the ABC..

It is indeed an honour to be the part of the zealous and

Through this unique 5 Days Workshop we have been
able to uptake the process of unlearn , learn and relearn

inquiry based innovation that will be launched at the 5

I fully believe that each individual has got the unique
chance to work for excellence coupled with the values
like commitment and sincerity towards the most

The APP will prepare each teacher, student and each

Memoir- An Ode to PRP Pedagogical Leadership Training

Intense desire to learn has always been my forte but time
management is a crucial element for every Principal. Amidst this

I was feeling honoured for being chosen for the Training of PRP

Pedagogical Leadership by COE Chennai and CBSE New Delhi. To
spare 6 days especially when the new academic online sessions
had just commenced as well as the 12th results compilation
being very vital, my world was spinning topsy turvy.
The marathon Pre- test questionnaire and the schedule posted
for the upcoming days explicitly conveyed the session forecast.
The inaugural ceremony which set the tone was followed by
Mythili Ma’am‘s vibrant articulation making me realise that the
sheath of knowledge will be closely well knit into my system.
Deliberations from each RP’s unfolded the depth in drafting an
APP. I joyfully embraced every learning that was in store and my
inner motivation grew leaps and bounds up North.
To capture the 6 days in a nut shell will be a Herculean task as
the take way is immeasurable. To sum it up-being the torch
bearer, I am now an enriched person with the shared vision
clearly illuminating the path of Smart Goal for all stakeholders to
“walk the talk” collaboratively with APP as the Crowning Glory !!

Penned down the memorable reflections……….”Design, Plan
and Execute”

Pre Learning:The tasks assigned and adhering to the timelines was a great

practice all by itself. It reminded me of Stephen covey's first habit of mind-

”Being Proactive”. Also reminded me of the thought process and the
complete synchrony of the assignment during the pre and post reflections of
the APP training programme led by Dr.Mythili and her team. This was Design
mode, which enabled us with Pre Learning activities before hand.I must say it
was the bronze lining of the thought process.

During Learning: Influencing the learner with what he already knows.Fine
Tuning and cleansing it through various learning exercises and pitching in
appropriate academic challenges to clarify the misconceptions was a silver
lining of APP. This helped us in spotting the areas where we need to fill in the
gaps in understanding and also leave out the ones we know already. The
Learning has begun with Unlearn and a rich effective SMART - Planning

Post Learning : The effective approaches to boost the learners’ engagement
were not complex. However, the APP training has made me reflect that it is
necessary to invest adequate time in deepening the knowledge of all the
primary, secondary and tertiary contributors to the process of learning which
build’s a CULTURE that eventually builds a positive Learning Outcome to
everyone.” One size does not fit Everyone”- This is the GOLDEN LINING “
Journey has begun now.

Thank you Dr.Mythili and the entire team for making my Journey begin with
Evergreen thought process, Learning is continuous, savour it with a bitter of
sourness for it will be fruitful for generations to come.

The Principal whispered in the ears of the Pedagogical Leader that

your dreams and my dreams are of one color now; Wherever you

go, I’m with you.

The moment of realization that they are synonymous and hail-
fellow-well-met was nonpareil. Six days engrossed in multifarious
magnitudes proved to be worth-cogitating on the styles &
functions of school leadership and its different effects on student
learning. Ruminating over three layers i.e. Setting a direction for
school improvement, Practicing pedagogical Leadership and
Assuring Student Learning with Actionable-s and Sub-Actionable-s
with special vehemence and fervency on Annual Pedagogical Plan
(APP) was a real life-long experience.

The realization of the fact that a Principal is a Pedagogical Leader
with disparate standpoints was, of course, a jim-dandy experience
breathing e-life into the participants. Thanks to Dr. Mythili and the
entire crew.

Miles to go before I sleep……. Miles to go before I sleep…….

The journey began with a selected few leaders from
CoE Pune being nominated for the Training. Each day
kept us engrossed in the concept of pedagogical

leadership which brought us closer to people’s

interaction as opposed to the hierarchical style.
Pedagogical leadership and it’s implementation is
defined by each leader’s own learning concept.
Building a culture of reflective practice comes to mind
when thinking about how leaders can support the TLP.
Creating space for all stakeholders to come together
and learn while grappling with the daily challenges, can
be a catalyst for growth. “A good objective of
leadership is to help those who are doing poorly to do
well and to help those who are doing well to do even
better.” – Jim Rohn. The hawk – eye of Dr. Mythili and
team would miss nothing. Thank you CBSE, NIEPA and
CoE Pune. Collaborating on the APP as a team was a
great work!

Engagement of six days was an evolution of a
person with lots of recapitulation, understanding,
application and dare to dream big. Realized the

inner expression needs a proper platform and

ecosystem…….. Padlets and Chat box gave
freedom to think out of the box and the prevailing
padlet wall is a living example of collaborative
learning and actionables.
Seen my mental & emotional image on the
Reflection page , Applied my debating skills in the
break out room, Adopted “I’m OK, You’re OK”,
Enjoyed the presentation of APP as success in
the 100 mtr sprint , Studied late night like a board
class student to accomplish the mission.
A great gathering of Learning Community indeed.

Effective pedagogical leaders do not set out to establish their
leadership. They just set out to make a difference. It’s never about the
role- always about the goal!

The training programme organised from July 1 to 6, 2021 jointly by
NIEPA & CBSE, emphasised on imbibing among the participants, the

skills and values essential for capacity building of Pedagogical Leaders

for leading learning efficiently. The varied topics of discussion- ranging
from initiating innovations and developing shared vision of the school,
to teaching-learning processes and preparation of the Annual
Pedagogical Plan - were undoubtedly immensely helpful, but I was
influenced the most by the concept of S.M.A.R.T goals.

I believe that the key to setting good specific, measurable, attainable,
relevant and time-based goals not only give pedagogical leaders a
chance to benefit personally, but also the organisation as a whole,
which further reinforces both the necessity and relevance of such goals.

Understanding how to introduce and develop goals can fundamentally
alter the way teachers view their work and their responsibilities within
any given school. As the leader, it becomes our responsibility to
document, track, and measure individual successes against the
school’s overarching goals—and not just once a year. The review
process should occur throughout the year as to keep everyone involved
up to date and current with any goals in progress, and to give teachers
ample time to adjust their progress or to take advantage of any new
feedback that the stakeholders might have suggested for them. For the
teachers, the advantage of having an evaluation is all about receiving
input, feedback, and direction on their performance, with the added
bonus of being motivated to continue the work they have been doing or
to improve and surpass any struggle that they might have been facing
at work. As it is said, sometimes hard work does not pay, but “SMART”
work does!

...Enhancing the pedagogical Perspectives…

Never have I been so affianced, defied and stirred by

a training session like Pedagogical Leadership

programme. The course challenged me to reflect on
the leadership I perceive and the actionables I have
to put into practice .The brilliantly structured
materials provided and the perceptions conveyed
helped me in elevating my self awareness and to
realize the elements in building up a new dimension
to my leadership based on trust and
sagaciousness.Reducing the experience and
‘Aha...moments’ to a handful of words is a mighty
task;still, when I sum up I feel the training session
lead by Dr.Mythili and team will be a phenomenal
tool in self analysis, predominantly if we apply the
process of reflecting upon our goals and the
impression it creates..
