” CAN ARCHITECTURE SAVE A
FORGOTTEN CULTURE?

Sulur Samudera : Living Boat Making
Museum in Kuala Terengganu
by Idzham Shah

Boat Making Industry is one actively produced in Terengganu,
concentrated in Pulau Duyong, one of the heritage places in the East
Coast region. People from other countries also demand this amazing
craftmanship to sail in the sea safely.
Today, traditional boat-making in Malaysia appears to be a dying trade.
Indeed, the number of boat builders from Pulau Duyong has dwindled to
just a few. Demand for the younger generation in the craft is important
to keep this heritage industry alive. It would be a sad state of the event
if this industry is not revived soon. (Beautiful Terengganu, 2018)
Lack of apprentices, a lack of demand for traditional boats, and the
traditional boat are built without plans and blueprints. The above issues
lead toward the end of the traditional boat-building legacy. Now their
economy are dwindling and facing the issue of extinction due to its low
position in the market.
But this creative industry is a big opportunity for Terengganu in elevating
their tourism-economic goal, as stated in PITAS 2035, local heritage
and culture as the main source of income of the east country.
This thesis aims to establish a living boat-building museum that
encourages the community to participate in and learn about this industry,
restoring Pulau Duyong’s golden age. The objectives are to investigate
the issues and needs faced by the traditional boat-building community,
to analyze the building characteristics that encourage community and
elevate the industry, and to create a living museum encompassing the
architectural features and characteristics that promote boat building
through effective programs and spaces.

A CITY GROW ON IT’S OWN”
WASTE?

Waste Rig : Pudu Eternal Market
by Idzham Shah

Pudu Market was once an economic gem of Kuala Lumpur, but
the historical area was discoloured by sanitary issues and immigrant
dominations. The waste compactor is already unable to cater to 1,800
markets stalls in Pudu wet market. The locals flock to Pudu for its cheap
groceries such as vegetables, chicken and fish. However Pudu repels
them with the disgusting and smelly market environment. Based on
studies, Pudu Market consumes more than 100 bins of biowastes daily,
but poor waste management gives Pudu a negative stigma for people
who want to explore the historical market.
Do you know that biomass technology can extract biowaste
into energy? Biowaste if not used for this purpose, would otherwise
be dumped in landfill sites or burned. The bad stigma of Pudu is also
contributed by the immigrant domination at the wet market. What
approach can be taken to improve the local business in Pudu? First, we
have to educate the local youth to farm again!
Better late than never, the Waste-Rig will become the saviour to
the vicinity. By combining biology and mechanical features, the tower is
eternal to manage the daily waste of the urban and turns it into treasures.
Instead of collecting oil from the sea, we can have a rig that collects
the biowaste on the land and turns it into energy, which is our living
need. The building also integrates urban farming, helping the locals to
gain knowledge and start farming in the urban as an alternative mode
of income. Produced items generated for the building could be sold,
and the waste from the urban farm is directly chuted to the Biowaste to
Energy system to process the energy and fertiliser. This innovative system
creates a circular economy to the tower, and it comes to the idea of the
Eternal Engine that runs the building.
From a dim city, this tower changes Pudu to an iconic city that
pioneers other cities to achieve zero waste and sustainable living.
Finally, Pudu returns as the economic gem of Kuala Lumpur again to
help Kuala Lumpur achieve zero waste and sustainable living.

Kampung Ladang : Land of Artisans
by Idzham Shah

A new urban that rejuvenates local social culture and economy
to inherit the living heritages of Kampung Ladang, once a place that
was remarkable with craftsmanship skills and community. As the heart
of Kuala Terengganu, the Land of Artisans is a place that develops
knowledges, community, and economy of the local artisans with the
vision to create the genius loci and tourism of “Kampung Ladang: Land
of Artisans”.
Located the east of Kuala Terengganu, Kampung Ladang Tok
Pelam is a place that is inherited with living heritages such as brass
making and batik making. Unfortunately, the controversial development
have erased the early settlement and replaced it with a complex of
inactive shop lots and a massive apartment.
This urban acupuncture helps the local to get income from their
cultural heritages, products, art, and craft as stated in PITAS 2035, the
objective of local heritage and culture as the main source of income of
the east country. Local heritages such as brass making, batik making,
and others will enliven this road as the cultural boulevard. Inactive shop
lots will be occupied by the local business in culture-tourism.
With the ideas of revitalization and rejuvenation of the existing
spirit of the place and forgotten culture, Kampung Ladang Tok Pelam will
rise again and be labelled as the heart of Kuala Terengganu heritages.

The Heart of Terengganu’s Heritages
A body need a heart to enliven the soul and the emotion
of a human. This statement clearly symbolize the role
of Kampung Ladang to Kuala Terengganu, which is to
preserve the living heritages and culture.
Jalan Ladang is a art and craft street that provide the
local crafter to commercialize their products. As the
gateway to Pantai Batu Burok, Jalan Ladang also a new
urban magnet to enliven the tourism and boost local
economy.
The roof structure enclosed the complex to shade the
cultural and commercial activities. With the name
‘Rain fo Light’, it is constructed with the contribution
of local wood crafters and expertise to symbolize local
capabilities.

Community Rejuvenation
Sense of place is remarkable to improve
the community interaction and the way
of living. With the vision of community
based design solution, the new typology
replicate back the ‘kampung’ environment
and interaction. Floating Ladang is a
platform to develop interaction between
local expertise and the youth which is the
next apprentice.

With the utilization of existing parking
lot, the floating complex completed with
facilities and realm to strengthen the
artisan community in the vision to preserve
the crafter knowledges timelessly.

Marang Estuary
by Idzham Shah
Marang city is the seat of the Marang District in the state of
Terengganu and is situated in the south of Kuala Terengganu. Fisheries
are the main economic activity in the region. With the collaboration of
Terengganu PITAS 2035, this project is planned to uplift and revitalize
Bandar Marang as the eco-tourism and recreational gem of Terengganu.
The parcel is located at the mouth of the Marang River. Several
issues such as the improperness of the public realm, the bustle of the
existing main jetty, and the lack of attraction, will be considered in
this project. But the biggest opportunity for this estuary is the existing
wetland and beach to create new activities and placemaking as the
urban magnet of Marang. The objectives are to improvise the existing
Marang Waterfront, to propose new activities of eco-tourism at the
wetland, and to create new attractions at the beach as the recreational
hub, with the vision of recreation and tourism with conservation.

Marang Wetland is proposed with many eco-tourism activities
such as the rehabilitation of mangroves, wetland jogging trails, and
floating chalets for tourism to get escapism into nature. With the concept
of Tumpang Lalu, the typologies are designed on stilt, eco-friendly and
green transportation as a humble initiative to mother nature.
