There are a few things about me that surprise people when they first meet me: One,thatI am apparently taller (5’10”) in person than I look in photos (isthere a short filter I am unaware of?). Two,thatI am a decent athlete (I have four Olympic medalistsin my family,so I’m happy I can atleastrepresent a little). And three, thatI barely graduated high school. Thatstory is a li’l more complicated. Allow me to explain... When I was a kid, my French mom would pull me out for weeks at a time to visit family in France (my dad, an American, stayed back in the States to work). There, I would basically learn everything I’d done all year in school again…in French. By the time I was 10, I was effectively bilingual and going to school in two countries. Which sounds cool now, but it made me feel like a freak back then. Once I got older, my mom had to quit taking me for long stays in France so I could have a more “normal” life. To be honest, I was relieved not to be the weird one anymore. But that wouldn’t last for long. At 12, I began working for a catering company. I started out serving and clearing, then progressed to helping in the kitchen (guess all that time in France wasn’t for nothing). By the time I was 16, I was executing crowd-pleasing fancy dinners so flawlessly that when the women who ran the small operation called it quits, they handed me the business. Pretty soon, I was waking up at dawn to pick up provisions for my weekend dinner parties at produce and meat markets downtown before my classmates had even cracked open an eye. My business was raking in the customers…and the cash. But I didn’t stop there. At the same time, I lucked my way into an internship usually reserved for college kids at Detroit Monthly, our city magazine. That’s when things really got tricky: There was no way I could be in class *and* in editorial meetings. And that’s when I started skipping school…and racking up the unexcused absences. It wasn’t long before my guidance counselor, Mr. Alexander, got wind of my poor attendance and called me in. While I was really scared of losing all the opportunities that had come my way, I also knew I couldn’t pursue my goals without some serious support— and I confessed to my triple life as a caterer/intern/student. Being a non-traditional student was a non-option at my traditional high school back then. But, to his eternal credit, Mr. Alexander managed to persuade the administration to let me continue with everything I was doing. “Just give her a chance,” he told them. “She could do something really special.” Mr. Alexander’s belief in me changed my life. While I once wished just to be like all the other kids, he helped me realize that what made me different could also lead me to great things. My school set up an independent study program for me, and I was able to explore everything that interested me, both inside and outside of the classroom. By the time graduation came around, my catering business was a huge success (I even hired several of my fellow students!), I was elected to student government, did the morning announcements, won a contest to be a DJ on our local radio station, directed two public service TV commercials and had my first magazine bylines. I’m not sharing this to encourage you to cut class (that’s never cool). But I do hope my story helps you realize that it’s totally OK if your path is different than others’. That it’s possible to create a high school life that fits you, not the other way around. You may need to find your own Mr. Alexander to make it happen, but I am proof that school really can be a steppingstone to dreams that seem almost impossible. Years later, at a class reunion, I got my chance to thank Mr. Alexander for all he did for me and excitedly shared with him that I’d started my own magazine, Girls’ Life. He smiled…and didn’t seem surprised at all. Karen

6 GL FEBRUARY | MARCH 2023 PHOTO: DIANA RAGLAND. Girls’ Life: Fans of Home Economics might not realize that, just like your character Shamiah, you’re adopted. What’s it like playing a character who shares such a personal part of your own story? Jordyn Curet: I’m very grateful that I get to play someone who has a similar experience to mine. Even though my mom has always been open about the fact that I’m adopted, I never really talk about it unless asked. But now, I’ve noticed that a lot more people have been coming out with their adoption stories—and I didn’t even know they were adopted. It's very cool, because for a long time I kind of felt like I was the only one. You showed off your musical talent a little in Holiday Harmony. Are you planning to pursue music more in the future or just focus on acting? JC: Songwriting and singing is something I’ve always really enjoyed doing. I wrote my first song when I was 7. It’s called “Lift Me Up” and has an anti-bullying message. So I do hope to pursue music. I admire Zendaya a lot—she’s an actor full time and does singing on the side. I feel like that’s probably gonna be like me. Zendaya is just everything. JC: I know! I’ve looked up to her ever since I was, like, 6 years old. I thought it was so cool to see someone who looks like me on the big screen. And she’s drop dead gorgeous and extremely talented. Oh, and I also ship her and Tom Holland. I love them as a couple. They’re just so cute together. If you had to describe yourself in just three words, what would they be? JC: Outgoing, optimistic and carefree. Good ones. OK, now if your bestie had to describe you in just three words, what would those be? JC: Oh, very sensitive for sure. What else though…I guess smart and kind. What are you most sensitive about? JC: Sad TikTok videos. They make me cry! It’s probably kind of funny to watch me cry over TikTok videos, but it happens. Dogs spending their last day with their owner? That’s so sad. Gets me every time. What’s the emoji that best describes you? JC: because I actually do that. I literally cover my face like that when I’m laughing. Oh, and now I’m doing it talking about it! with Jordyn Curet Just 7 Nothing-Is-Off-Limits Questions You probably know the 14-year-old actor best as the outgoing Shamiah on Home Economics and as Rosemary on HBO Max’s Holiday Harmony. But do you know who she’s currently obsessing over and the TikTok videos that make her tear up every time? BY KAYLEIGH ROBERTS ENTERTAINMENT CELEBS

Fact: Your perfect match has been hiding in plain sight for a while now. Maybe you haven’t even noticed them yet, or maybe you’ve pulled an Elle (Joey King) fromThe Kissing Boothmove and just written them off as a non-starter for some reason. Whatever the case may be, when the time is right, you’ll see your sweetie in a new light and sparks will fly. Trying to be someone you’re not never pays, and that goes double when it comes to love. Thisisn’tto say that you’re actively covering up who you are—it’s just that sometimes we don’t even realize we’re fighting our inner truth, like Brooks(Noah Centineo) in The Perfect Date. But when you own your truest self? That’s when your crush is guaranteed to notice. We have all heard the old saying “opposites attract”—and that’s definitely the case for you and bae. You two come from different cliques, just like Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens) and Troy (Zac Efron) in High School Musical. PUT IT ALL TOGETHER AND YOU’VE GOT THE SOUR PATCH KIDS OF STYLE— FIRST THEY’RE SOUR, THEN THEY’RE SWEET.
THE LOLLIPOP GUILD Go for off-duty ballerina with a Swan Lake-inspired sheer feathered top, a tulle skirt with built-in leggings and a sleek ballet bun. Adding cool-girl sneakers says “I’m just coming from rehearsal” and topping it off with a lollipop-adorned cardi says “say hi to my sweet tooth.”
SAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT A frilly, frosty bodysuit layered over a turtleneck and tucked into a pleated leather skirt is the ultimate indulgence. A cutie charm on your belt loop ups the sweetness, but go-anywhere combat boots balance that right back out.
HUBBA BUBBA ’90s-inspired style has never been so delicious: A cutout striped babydoll tee layered under a crushed velvet tank dress, paired with chunky Mary Janes? It’s giving Empire Records in the best way. The patterned tights and ice cream shoe charm are the literal cherry on this sundae.
LADIES WHO (LOVE COOKIES FOR) LUNCH Want proof that balletcore works with everything? Pair it with some of spring’s hottest trends like patchwork pockets and animal prints. Goes together like sprinkles and frosting.
LET THEM EAT CAKE We like our looks like we like our cake: layered. Sheer tulle gives texture to this dress, and a waffle-weave mock turtleneck adds attitude. Oh, and the latest way to wear legwarmers? Tuck them into your flats, natch.
CONVERSATION STARTER Talk about sugar and spice: Pairing a frothy rosette-adorned strapless dress with a black turtleneck, platform pleather boots and a sparkly rhinestone corset is the ultimate sweet-salty combination. Candy hearts could never.

30 GL FEBRUARY | MARCH 2023 BEAUTY NEWBIE’S GUIDE TO… We’re All Ears You just got the OK from your parents to get your ears pierced (yay!). Now here’s everything you need to know to get prepped— besides what new cute earrings to buy. BY ERIN REIMEL Time it right • Starring in a musical with tons of quick costume changes? Right in the middle of sports season? In a word: Wait. “You really want to avoid bumping your ears,” says Lisa Bubbers, co-founder of the piercing studio Studs. Pick the right piercer • “Make sure your piercing studio uses single-use sterilized needles,” advises Bubbers. “These cause less tissue trauma, require shorter healing time and are more hygienic than a piercing gun.” Have sensitive skin? Ask for 14k or 18k solid gold starter earrings. Prep correct • “Come to your appointment well rested, eat a snack before and hydrate,” advises Bubbers. The better you’re feeling, the better prepared you’ll be for the pierce. Try to chill • Feeling super nervous? Take a deep breath. We swear, piercing feels like a quick pinch, and it’s over before you know it. If your pain tolerance is low, stick to piercing your lobes versus other spots on your ears—they’re fleshier, so it won’t hurt much at all. Keep it clean • Spray your new piercings two to three times a day with saline solution (try NeilMed Piercing Aftercare, $10, drugstores), plus frequently wash your hands, sheets, pillowcase, towels and anything else that may harbor icky bacteria that could spread to your ear. Don’t touch • You might be tempted to twist and turn your studs, but rotating them will only delay healing. If you sleep on your side, use a travel pillow and place your ear in the middle hole to avoid lying directly on your piercing. Wait to change • Our pros recommend waiting four to six months for your lobes to fully heal before changing your earrings. Pierced your cartilage? Keep those beginner baubles in for up to a year. CUTIE CONNECTIONS “It’s so trendy to link two piercings with delicate little chains,” Harper shares. You can buy them as a set or use a removable chain on any earring like Ear Kit Charlie Chain Connectors ($10 each, earkit.com). DOUBLE DOSE “Stacking piercings by adding two tiny studs close together has become really popular,” says Harper. Grab a pair for each ear like the Studs Iridescent Mini CZ Stud ($36 for a pair, studs.com). NO-NEEDLE ACCESSORIES Passing on piercing? Go for versatile ear cuffs that hang onto your ear without poking through it. We love the BaubleBar Haydyn Ear Cuff Set ($42, baublebar.com). LISTEN UP! 32 GL FEBRUARY | MARCH 2023 BEAUTY NOTEBOOK Nothing screams spring right now more than a ridiculously pretty flush. Fortunately, for those of us not currently blushing over our latest crush (yet!), there are lots of fun, chic cheek trends to try. DON’T LOOK NOW… YOU’RE BLUSHING THE TREND: Sunburn Blush GET THE GLOW: Fake an I-just-gotback-from-break flush with a cream formula that’ll melt into the skin, suggests makeup artist Min Min Ma. “Use your fingers to dab it onto the apples and up your cheekbones, then take any excess onto the bridge of your nose and forehead, where the sun would naturally hit.” Heart Hailey’s glossy skin? Add some highlighter for a dewy glow. TRY: Jane Iredale Glow Time Blush Stick in Fervor, $38, janeiredale.com THE TREND: Draping GET THE GLOW: This groovy ’70s look is back. Using a big, fluffy brush, begin your blush midway up your cheek, blending up and out toward the temple. Continue above your brow, stopping midway. If your final look is two C’s that make your eyes pop, you’ve understood the assignment. Doing a monochromatic look? Connect the blush to the end of your eyeshadow, then blend up and around, says makeup artist Danessa Myricks. We suggest going all out with a fuchsia shade—Cher would be proud. TRY: L.A. Colors Mineral Blush in Pink Du Jour, $6, walmart.com THE TREND: Classic Coral GET THE GLOW: Like Snapchat streaks, blush color trends will come and go, but coral is the shade you can always count on. The peachy hue is flattering on all skin tones thanks to its warm—but not over-thetop—vibe. Try it with a matching pout, and while you’re at it, dab some on your eyes, too. It’s the easiest fiveminute face when you’ve snoozed your alarm one too many times. THE TREND: Undereye Blush GET THE GLOW: If you’re trying to hide the fact that you fell asleep with your face in your math book during yesterday’s late-night study sesh, this viral TikTok trend is actually kind of genius—the redness will make the brights of your eyes pop like no other. Mixing a drop of liquid blush with your concealer will give you a subtle pink shade, but if you *really* want to wow, dab a little extra rouge over top. The finishing touch? Brush up your brows. Now you’re ready to ace that geometry quiz. TRY: Iconic London Sheer Blush in Power Pink, $27, iconiclondoninc.com THE TREND: Lots of Layers GET THE GLOW: If prom pics are already on your mind, this red carpet-worthy cheek sculpting technique is for you. First, layer a matte cream formula high on your cheekbones (whenever you normally wear it), then brush on a powder blush in a similar shade to set it, says Ma. We love this look for the oily-skinned girlies especially, because with this combo, your makeup isn’t going *anywhere* (except maybe a selfie on your Insta story). TRY: Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Paaarty, $29, tartecosmetics.com and Rose Inc. Cream Blush Refillable Cheek & Lip Color in Camellia, $30, roseinc.com THE TREND: Peekaboo Blush GET THE GLOW: For the most natural-looking blush (think: a fresh flush courtesy of a before-thebell sprint), apply foundation on top of cream blush. You heard us: After applying your foundation or tinted moisturizer, use your fingers to dab some blush onto your cheeks, then grab the sponge or brush you used for your complexion product and press it over top to tone it down. This look is a low-key one, but it’s far from basic—and pairs perfectly with a smoky eye or punchy liner. TRY: E.l.f. Putty Blush in Tahiti, $7, elfcosmetics.com THE TREND: Juicy Apples GET THE GLOW: The only thing juicier than the return of Y2K velour tracksuits? This dewy blush trend. Here’s how makeup artist Amanda Bell does it: Saturate a clean sponge with some setting spray (her go-to is Pixi’s Makeup Fixing Mist, $15, pixibeauty.com), then dab the dampened sponge into your blush before patting on your cheek. As for the perfect placement? Bell swears by the teardrop method: Start on the fleshiest part of your cheeks and taper the product up into your hairline. 34 GL FEBRUARY | MARCH 2023 BEAUTY SKIN It’s time to bring your glow out of hibernation. B Y L I S A D E S A N T I S I F Y O U H AV E ou can’t get much more “clean girl aesthetic” than freshly washed skin. Think: unclogged pores, smooth texture and the telltale gorgeous glow that comes from sudsing up. But what’s exactly the best way to cleanse your skin? Like, do you need to wash morning *and* night? Should you be using a foaming cleanser? One that’s fragrance-free? Or what about a cleansing balm? Can you over-wash? So. Many. Questions! Relax. Turns out the right routine hinges on knowing just one thing: your skin type, says Alexis Bonin, an esthetician at clean beauty retailer The Detox Market. There are five types: oily, dry, normal, combination and sensitive—and each one needs its own regimen. Bye-bye, dryness and dullness…hello, healthy, happy face. Y O U R S K I N S p r i n g c l e a n Y oily skin The sheen on your skin is actually the oil that secretes from your pores. Turns out grease is a *good* thing because it keeps skin moisturized. That said, pores can get clogged, so opt for a pore-penetrating foaming cleanser. SPRING CLEAN IT: The skin cycling trend you’ve seen on SkinTok? “It’s a way to try to avoid irritation and dryness, especially when using retinols or exfoliants,” explains Dr. Heather D. Rogers, co-founder of Modern Dermatology in Seattle. Basically, it refers to the swapping in and out of products or ingredients that otherwise would be too harsh for daily use. So use a chemical exfoliant (think: acids) on day one, a retinoid on day two and a rich moisturizer on days three and four before starting the “cycle” again. SKIP IT: No daily exfoliating with harsh scrubs, advises Dr. Kseniya Kobets, director of cosmetic dermatology at Montefiore Einstein in Westchester County, N.Y. “Stripping your skin with astringents, toners and scrubs irritates skin and can even cause oil production to spike.” TRY: Paula’s Choice Calm 1% BHA Sensitive Skin Exfoliant, $34, paulaschoice.com. I F Y O U H AV E I F Y O U H AV E I F Y O U H AV E I F Y O U H AV E dry skin combination skin normal skin sensitive skin You may feel tightness or notice some flaky areas—which means your skin is in need of a major hydration boost. The creamier the cleanser, the better (look for the word milk or milky). Oils and hydrating serums are great for you, too. SPRING CLEAN IT: To take your gentle wash to the next level, try a silicone cleansing tool. The flexible nubs offer just enough of a slough while you scrub. Finish with a hydrating serum to lock in moisture. SKIP IT: If your skin is ever left feeling dry or peeling after you rinse, it can be a sign you’re over-cleansing. Try scaling back or implementing a more moisturizing formula. TRY: Ursa Major Making Moves Milky Cleanser, $34, ursamajorvt.com. Sephora Collection Facial Cleansing Tool, $8, sephora.com. The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Serum, $8, theordinary.com. You have the most common skin type: You’re oilier in some areas with spots of dryness or sensitivity. Typically, combination skin consists of an oily T-zone (the forehead, nose and chin) with the cheeks on the drier side. SPRING CLEAN IT: Look for an exfoliant that’s not stripping and has balanced ingredients such as oil-purging salicylic acid and calming centella asiatica. SKIP IT: Combination skin has different needs, so don’t treat your entire face the same. When you do use your scrub (stick to once or twice a week), start in the T-zone, then extend the product to the cheeks so everywhere gets a nice, deep clean—without irritating the drier areas. Breakout? A simple spot treatment will solve it. TRY: Bioré Clean Detox Gentle Face Cleanser, $7, walmart.com. Is Clinical Cleansing Complex Polish, $48, isclinical.com. Zapzyt Acne Treatment Gel, $5, walmart.com. Not too dry, not too oily, your skin is just like Goldilocks’ perfect porridge. SPRING CLEAN IT: Incorporate a facial steamer once a week before cleansing—it helps open up your pores. Choose a pH-balanced cleanser, then add a simple vitamin C serum (a multi-tasking must for bright, smooth skin). SKIP IT: No going overboard on products or process. Whether you wash in the morning is up to you but, as a rule of thumb, Dr. Rogers recommends simply rinsing with water and patting skin dry to “leave those good oils on your skin. Your body worked hard to get them there,” she shares. TRY: Youth To The People Superfood Antioxidant Cleanser, $36, sephora.com. Vanity Planet Facial Steamer, $50, target.com. Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster, $55, paulaschoice.com. You experience unexplained redness, irritation and even the occasional random breakout. The best thing you can do? Keep the number of products you use to a minimum (and track which ones send your skin into a tailspin). SPRING CLEAN IT: Start using a cotton round with your cleanser instead of just your fingers or a rough washcloth. The texture of the pad will remove any dirt or dead skin. And calming ingredients like oat = your skin’s best friend. SKIP IT: In lieu of washing in the morning, rinse with a gentle micellar water. (Psst: Don’t overlook products that are formulated for babies. Theirs is the most sensitive skin of all—which means perfect for you, too!) TRY: Mustela No Rinse Cleansing Baby Micellar Water, $16, target.com. EcoTools Reusable Ultra Soft Cotton Pads, $10, ulta.com. Lumene Nordic Hydra Oat Milk Oil Cleanser, $19, amazon.com.
36 GL FEBRUARY | MARCH 2023 BY L ISA D ESANTIS BEAUTY HAIR T he secret to this flippy masterpiece is a lot of layers—and a healthy dose of curtain bangs, says celebrity hairstylist Sarah Potempa. The Farrah Flow works on most hair lengths and face shapes (though curly cuties, fairwarning: Layers like these enhance yourtexture). MAKE IT YOURS: Potempa says to blow-dry your hair downward at the crown for major volume. Then, with a large barrel curling iron (try the Beachwaver Co. Beachwaver S1.25 Dual Voltage White Rotating Curling Iron, $149, beachwaver.com), roll hair up and away from your face, creating a feathery blend. Use Velcro rollers (like Drybar High Tops Self-Grip Rollers, $12 for 6, sephora.com) on your face-framing strands, allowing them to cool and set while you curl the rest (secure rollers with Harry Josh Pro Tools Makeup Wave Setting Clips, $25 for 6, harryjoshprotools.com). Finish by raking your fingers through the curls to break them apart, then add volume at the roots with texture powder (try DesignMe Puff.Me Volumizing Powder, $24, designmehair.com). History doesn’t have to be your best subject to know there’s a throwback beauty resurgence happening right now. Overlined lips and thin brows? The ’90s saw them first. Emo eyeliner and squared off acrylics? Pure Y2K, baby. As for spring hair trends, the vibe headed back even farther to the ’70s and ’80s—just with fresh, modern takes. GL FEBRUARY | MARCH 2023 37 T hink more Miley Ray than Billy Ray when it comes to this legendary “business in the front, party in the back” look. Hairstylist Kahh Spence says it works well on heart, square or diamond-shaped faces. “The close-cropped layers accentuate your jawline, and the wispy fringe above the brows evens it out,” he shares. MAKE IT YOURS: The goal with this ’do? Don’t overdo it. If your hair has some natural wave, scrunch in a salt spray to encourage movement. Look for onewith hydrating ingredients, because a crunchy mulletis not it(we like Dae Hibiscus Wave Spray, $26, daehair.com). Hair on the straighter side? Opt for a spray that tamps down frizz and maxes shine like OGX Argan Oil of Morocco Extra Strength Multi-Benefit Heat Protection Hairspray ($8, target.com). S ay “perm” to your mom and prepare for some hair horror stories. Fortunately, the new perms are far different from the frightful frizzfests of yesteryear. With improved treatment solutions, different rod lengths and creative placement, you now get a lot less damage with a lot more curl variation. MAKE IT YOURS: As the great Elle Woods once pointed out, always wait two to three daysto wash your hair after getting a perm. But once you do, using a weekly deep conditioning treatment like Olaplex No. 8 Bond Intense Moisture Hair Mask ($30, sephora.com) will keep hair healthy. Then just savor all that extra free time because your perm does the styling for you. T he middle part reigned supreme for a hot minute, but side bangs with a deep part are making their comeback thanks to music’s pop-punk revival. Spence recommends asking your stylist to cut your bangs diagonally to the arch of one of your brows. Have curtain bangs already? Just pull them to one side. MAKE IT YOURS: Unless you’re into the grungy look of greasy fringe, keeping your hair clean is keywith this cut. Your bangs are prone to picking up oils from your forehead throughout the day, so a spritz or two of dry shampoo like DpHue Apple Cider Vinegar Dry Shampoo ($26, ulta.com) can revive them in an instant. 38 GL FEBRUARY | MARCH 2023 BY ERIN SARGENT ANDI ELLOWAY/THE LICENSING PROJECT. BEAUTY SPECIAL All hail the Everything Shower Once a week, my shower cycle lines up perfectly: My shaving day overlaps with my shampoo day, which overlaps with my hair mask treatment day. At this point, I think to myself, might as well tack on a prewash hair oil and a post-shower face mask and make it a whole thing. Say hello to the Everything Shower: Your excuse to completely indulge in a watery self-care wonderland. We’re talking hair washing, exfoliating, shaving, cleansing and soothing all in one. So turn on the hot (just, um, not too hot) water, because the Everything Shower dares to ask the question: What if a shower could be an ~experience~? STEP 1: THE PRE-SHOWER Everything Showers start before you even step in. Take a few minutesto prep your hair and skin while the water heats up, advises Lisa Abbey, founder of Strength x Beauty Hair and Body Care.“Oily and damaged hair benefits from a prep step,” she explains. “When you apply products to dry hair, they penetrate more deeply.” Damaged hair? Strengthen it with hair oil or a deep conditioning mask. Oily hair? Spritz an apple cider vinegar rinse (mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with one cup of waterin a spray bottle) wherever your hair is most oily. These treatments need a few minutes to get fully absorbed so, while you’re waiting, prep yourskin, too. Whether or not you’re shaving, dry brush your legs in wide, circular motions to help exfoliate and increase blood circulation (oh, and it feels ah-mazing). Finally, take a few minutes to set the mood. Gather your fave candles and hit play on a relaxing playlist (peep our mix at girlslife.com/iti). The finishing touch? Pop your bathrobe in the dryer on low so it's warm and fluffy when you hop out. STEP 2: THE HAIR Your Everything Shower is about giving your locks extra love. So skip your usual quick suds and focus on your scalp and roots, really working the shampoo in with the pads of your fingers before rinsing well. Light a candle and turn on your fave lo-fi playlist—we have your new self-care obsession.

One of those every-few-washes hair masks. Swap your regular conditioner for a super hydrating formula that’ll add strength and shine (find our faves at girlslife.com/iti). Use a wide-tooth comb to help distribute the product, then place a shower cap over your mask-soaked strands so you really lock in the moisture (we save the plastic freebies from hotels for this!). Let it sit for about five minutes, then rinse well. STEP 3: THE BODY While your mask does its thing, lather up with a soap or body wash packed full of good-for-yourskin ingredients like jojoba oil, shea butter and essential oils. “These ingredients help nourish and moisturize. Natural fragrances are gentle and soothing— they won’t aggravate any skin issues you might have,”says dermatologist Dr. Alpana Mohta. Fan of exfoliating? Slough away! “Choose a gentle formula, then use circular motions as you exfoliate,” explains Dr. Mohta.“It willscrub away dead skin cellsto reveal radiant, healthy skin.”(A word of warning to oursensitive-skinned sisters: If you notice exfoliating irritates your skin, opt for a soothing body wash and loofah instead.) Finally, if you want to get rid of some body hair, shave the best for last. The steamy water opens hair follicles, while exfoliation removes dead skin that could clog up your razor. Just apply a moisturizing shave cream or gel before you start. “It will ensure your hair gets softer and the razor blade can glide without resistance,” says Dr. Mohta. STEP 4: THE POST-SHOWER Your Everything Shower doesn’t end just because you turned off the water. How you care for your skin and hair post-wash makes*all*the difference. Your skin is most prone to drying out when you first get out of the shower, so moisturize right away (we live for calming ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter and aloe vera). Then, Abbey recommends using a microfiber hair towel to dry your hair. “It works faster and it’s more lightweight, so it won't pull on your hair or cause breakage like a regular bath towel can,” she shares. And to close out this spa-level experience? Apply a soothing sheet mask, wrap up in your go-to snuggly robe, grab yourtea and enjoy your zen. Happy Everything Showering, honey.
4TK0GGLL FFEEBBRRUUAARRYY ||MMAARRCCHH 22002223 THE ADVICE EVERY GIRL WITH A CRUSH NEEDS T HEAR RIGHT N W BY KATHERINE HAMMER Romantic affirmations to get you through the long winter. Love is in the air! Bring on all the happy vibes and heart eyes…oh, and don’t forget the super confusing feelings/chaotic moments/crush clashes that inevitably come with coupling. Whether you’re embarking on a legit relationship, still stuck in a “what are we?!” stage or simply obsessing over someone who has no clue you exist (or worse, your ex), we’ve got advice for it all. LOVE AFFIRMATION #1: DON’T! OVERTHINK! IT! Just about every GL girl we talked to admitted they’ve fallen into this tricky trap at least once. “When I had my first BF, I worried so much about every text I sent and would workshop my ideas with, like, five of my friends,” confesses Bridget R., 16. “I wanted to be perfect so badly, but I came off as super uncomfortable and awkward. Needless to say, we broke up soon after.” Don’t make Bridget’s mistake: While the early days of chatting up your crush warrant some butterflies (and maybe even running a cute DM by your BFF before you hit send), by the time you’re *actually* getting close to dating, things should feel normal and natural most of the time. “Try to be friends first,” advises therapist and relationship expert Lauren Cook-McKay. “This way, you get to know them better and gain the confidence to confess your feelings if the timing is right.” LOVE AFFIRMATION #2: BE HONEST…AND ACCEPT THEIR HONESTY, TOO This advice applies to pretty much any stressy S.O. sitch. You two hang out constantly, but they won’t commit? Tell them you’re looking to be their GF, not their situationship— and stay firm until you get a “yes” or “no” answer. You had a great convo after history class, but they never asked for your number? Send them a casual Snap saying you enjoyed chatting… and see if they pick up the hint. Of course, that means you’ll have to accept their authentic answer, even when it means they’re turning you down. “Rejection is hard, so have compassion for yourself,” says therapist Stephanie Gilbert. “No one is perfect, and everyone— including you—is worthy of love.” So when your date goes from dream to disaster, don’t waste time wallowing. Just put on Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and let yourself cry it out for a night…then shake it off and head back into the romance game ready to slay. LOVE AFFIRMATION #3: SHOW THE REAL YOU Nope, this doesn’t mean you need to reveal your deepest secrets on your first FaceTime with your crush. But do be real and honest— whether that means coming clean about the fact that you don’t heart
GL FEBRUARY | MARCH 2023 41 C RUSHES WESTEND61/GETTY IMAGES. watching hockey all weekend or that you’d rather not text into the night while you’re trying to study. And don’t shy away from sharing the sensitive stuff, too, advises Georgia L., 15. “You can also open up if you feel like something has changed—like if you didn’t want to have your first kiss before, but now you actually feel ready. The right person isn’t going to judge you for being genuine.” LOVE AFFIRMATION #4: YOUR LIFE ISN’T A PINTEREST BOARD Or a rom-com, an enemies-to-dating novel or just about any other OTP/ love story/relationship trope you’ve seen in pop culture. The senior class president you’re swooning over? They may graduate without ever knowing how you really feel (or making some kind of romantic overture). Your lab partner who’s sending mixed signals? Turns out they’re into your BFF and were hoping you’d make the connection. Not exactly the stuff of Netflix happily-ever-afters. But here’s the deal: All of that assorted messiness is completely normal—and it’s part of your story, whether it ends with you thriving solo or connecting with a brand new bae. “Just slow down, relax and enjoy yourself,” advises relationship expert Victoria Taylor. When you don’t put so much pressure on things to be totally Pinterest-perfect, they may end up being even more amazing than you hoped (like, say, when that low-key history study sesh suddenly turns into them confessing how much they heart you). And…scene. LOVE AFFIRMATION #5: YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE IN LOVE (OR LIKE) YET Plenty of people get through middle school, high school and, yes, even college without a bae and turn out perfectly fine. So if you don’t have the time or energy for a committed relationship right now, know that admiring a crush from afar is more than OK. “In high school, I always felt a lot of pressure from my friends to approach my crush and ask them out,” reflects Sascha J., 19. “To be honest, I felt more comfortable just staying friends, keeping my feelings to myself and focusing on my interests and goals.” It’s one thing to hold yourself back from a potential bae because you’re terrified of rejection (go back to affirmation #1). But know that it’s also totally fine to use these very important years to focus on all the stuff that makes *you* happy— no bae needed. “There is no need to rush into a relationship,” advises Taylor. So take a deep breath and remind yourself of this: Crushes may come and go, but the relationship you have for life? That’s the one you have with you.
Going girlfriend 101: A step-bystep guide to your first real relationship. YOU’RE DATING… NOW WHAT?
GL FEBRUARY | MARCH 2023 43 C RUSHES First there were the all-weekend texting marathons. Then, your walks together between classes turned into sweet after-school strolls. Soon after, you (finally!) started dating. And now that you DTR’d, you’re officially a thing. Congrats! But…now what? Should you hold hands in the halls? Does hanging out with your new significant other replace your standing Friday night plans with your bestie? Do you have to meet their parents? Shudder. Don’t freak out: We’ve got your ultimate guide to making the flirtationship-torelationship transition super smooth. EXPECT THE AWKWARD. You’re the same you, and your bae’s the same bae—but your new titles can make things feel formal in a weird way. You’ll stumble over a few things as you figure out what you’re like as a couple: how to introduce each other, how often you’ll hang and text and go out, how you handle PDA. Sure, it can be uncomfortable, but it also can be new and exciting. How to get through it? Give yourselves some time and let things fall into place naturally. They will. KEEP IT FUN. We’ve been there: You find someone you are totally into (and, yay—they’re into you, too), and suddenly it’s so tempting to hang out as much as possible. Your besties get the back burner, your trail shoes gather dust and the family says they’ve pretty much forgotten what you look like. The problem? Spending tons of time together could set you up to get super serious, super quickly— so remember to keep it light, too. Plan cute hangouts (movie night with the crew, anyone?) without rushing into tons of one-on-one time. BE REALISTIC. Say it with us: Social media is not real life. Your bae may seriously be the sweetest, but you’re not going to be living in filtered bliss every single second of the day—and tough times are totally normal. So if she can’t make it to your grandma’s 80th birthday bash or he forgets to text “good luck” before your world history final, know that kind of stuff is all part of a regular relationship. The key to happy coupledom is speaking up when something matters to you, but also forgiving and forging on. GO DEEP. As you get closer, your convos can (and frankly should) go beyond weekend plans and funny memes. Try a thought starter like “What’s something you want to be better at?” or “What do most people not understand about you?” and see what you learn about your new bae in the process. SHOW SUPPORT. You coupled up because you care about each other, so it’s key to make your S.O. feel special without sacrificing your sense of self. Ofc, you don’t have to change up your entire after-school calendar, but imagine how good it will feel when they see your face in the stands. Gotta miss a match? Sneak some cookies in their tennis bag to support them from afar. SAY WHAT YOU MEAN (WHEN YOU’RE READY). Here’s the thing: You probably say “I love you” to a lot of VIPs in your life (your mom, your best friends… sometimes even the barista at Starbucks when she gives you extra caramel), so if the feelings are there, you don’t need to overthink it. Try easing into it (“I love how you make me playlists for all my moods,” or “I love spending time with you”). The idea is to be sweet and sincere. But remember: If the thought of getting mushy makes you feel embarrassed (or you just started to get more emotional with each other), then there’s no rush to throw the L-word around just yet. REMEMBER YOUR SQUAD. You’re head over heels for your plus one…but your besties? Eek, they’re starting to seem just a little bit resentful that you ditched last weekend’s sleepover for your dinner date. Sharing a social circle can be a fun part of coupledom—the more the merrier, right? But when there’s friend friction, set aside time to let your BFFs know how important they are to you, too. Yep, even if that means peacing out of bae’s basketball game in the third quarter to go hang at movie night. IMPRESS THE FAM. Stress-sweating just *thinking* about showing up to their family’s Sunday night dinner? Take a deep breath, babe—you’ve got this. Just be polite (lots of “please” and “thank you” never hurts), do your homework (aka ask bae beforehand about their parents’ jobs or their little sister’s fave book series) and clean up after yourself (always ask what you can do to help out). Trust us: Meeting each other’s families will make life easier. And matching your face with your name will make them feel more comfortable about everything. OPEN UP. You’re ready to show off your romance to the world… but they’re a tiny bit terrified of PDA. If they’re horrified by hallway hugs, ease into it. Try linking your arm around theirs when it’s just the two of you, and you’ll eventually cozy up comfortably. But if they are keeping you completely hidden from family and friends, be warned: You’re not their sweetie, you’re a secret. And that’s not OK. SET YOUR BOUNDARIES. Here’s what your BF or GF can expect from you: friendship, support, honesty, affection…the list goes on. But know that being in a romantic relationship puts you under no(!) obligation to do anything you’re not comfortable with, whether it’s watching the latest nightmare-inducing horror flick—or something more serious, like getting intimate. You should never, ever feel pressured to do something you’re not ready for.
44 GL FEBRUARY | MARCH 2023 YOUR HANDHOLDING SITCH REVEALS A LOT ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP… Sweaty palms aside, this can tell you a ton. Whether you realize it or not, holding hands with someone is actually kind of a big deal. It’s most people’s introduction to PDA (and, let’s be honest, it’s a lot less nerve-wracking than a kiss). It’s an easy way to show someone you’re totally into them in a gesture that’s casual while still being incredibly romantic. But not all hand-holding is created equal. Decoding the way you hold hands can reveal *exactly* what’s up with you and bae. They could be sending you a message with their mitts. Seriously. THE TIGHTLY INTERLACED FINGERS This is probably the most common of all the hand-holding positions, and it means your crush is totally comfortable around you. So if they’re going for this, it means they aren’t anxious about the idea of PDA (or the potential for hand sweat). The interlaced fingers mean you’re really vibing as a couple. You’re close and you understand each other. Relationship-wise, you’re in a really good spot. Lucky you! BONUS: Is your thumb on top—or theirs? If your thumb is on top of theirs in this position, it means you like to make the decisions in the relationship, which is awesome. If theirs is on top, it means they are down to take the lead, too. GL FEBRUARY | MARCH 2023 45 C RUSHES THE INTERLOCKED PINKIES OK, this is a pretty rare one...but we’re including it because it’s so darn cute. The pinkie lock is the ultimate sweetheart move. They adore you and are trying to show it by snuggling pinkies. (Plus, it keeps you ready to pinkie swear anything at a moment’s notice, which is super important.) Your next step? Open up and tell them how much they really mean to you. Aww. THE PALMS-ONLY This style involves no woven fingers whatsoever, so it feels really casual. Maybe you’ve just started hanging out. Maybe you’re trying to figure out how you feel about each other (and there’s nothing wrong with that). Maybe they’re a little bit nervous about fully diving in and locking those fingers together. Maybe they are just a little bit guarded with their feelings. Or, um, maybe you’re wearing mittens, which make it literally impossible to hold hands any other way. Bottom line? Don’t read too much into it. THE HAND DROPPER You’re walking along, holding hands for at least a couple of seconds…and then they drop your hand and leave you hanging. Sure, you’re still strolling side by side, but could it be a sign something’s up? If they do it when there’s a certain crowd around (like their too-cool friends from the lacrosse team or worse, their ex) or you feel like you’re constantly reinitiating the PDA, it could mean they’re not comfortable holding hands yet…or it could be a red flag. Either way, it’s definitely time for an honest chat. THE OVER-THE-SHOULDER HAND LOCK This is a combined arm-over-the-shoulder move paired with a hand hold—and you can witness it in literally every ’90s movie ever made. It means they like you, but you’re also one of their buds. They want people to know they are into you (and you two are an item) in a cute, playful, fun way. They might do this around their crew because it’s a low-key way to hold hands. THE YOU-IN-FRONT-OFTHEM MOVE Are you always walking in front of them while holding hands…and kinda dragging them along? Sure, this looked really cute on Instagram when couples did it in gorgeous locations around the globe, but IRL it might mean they are feeling distant from you. It may be time to have a conversation about what’s on their mind. Are you both happy in your relationship? It’s always a good idea to check in with people—and this might be your hint to do it. THE INTERLOCKED ARMS This isn’t technically a hand-holding position, but it needs to be included here for one major reason: If they choose to lock arms instead of holding hands, it’s because they are either 1) keeping things strictly platonic, 2) wanting to pull you in closer without being *too* obvious or 3) freezing cold. Take it as a sign to try leaping out of the friend zone (like asking them to O hang one-on-one next weekend). PPOSITE PAGE: WESTEND61/GETTY IMAGES.
46 GL FEBRUARY | MARCH 2023 Things seemed swoon-worthy with your crush…well, until they ghosted you/asked out another girl/made you feel kinda meh. Now, they’re back—and on their best behavior. Butis baeworth the bother? THEY LEFT YOU HANGING They asked for your number at a holiday party…then never texted. When they spot you atthe library a fewweekslater, they ask if you’re free this weekend. THEIR MOTIVE: Maybe he was seeing someone. Maybe she was swamped with school projects. Or maybe they hadn’t figured out their feelings until this very moment. Whatever it was, it took ’til now for them to wake up and getthe hint. YOUR MOVE: Take them up on their offer. You’ll likely find out why they never got in touch. But if they ignore you again? Bye! THEY CHOSE THE OTHER GIRL Your close friend (and longtime crush) ditched you for a random girl and dropped out of your life for months. But now that *that* relationship is over, they’re suddenly hoping to hang out solo. THEIR MOTIVE: They’re ready to date again— and see you,the ever-loyal pal, as a potential new GF…or maybe just a shoulder to cry on post-breakup. YOUR MOVE: Stay strictly friends-only. You may really like them, butjumping intomorethan-buds territory could confuse things and leave your heart broken…again. THEY BLINDSIDED YOU After a fall of bliss, they dumped you to “date other people.” Now that Valentine’s Day is on the horizon, they want to cozy up. THEIR MOTIVE: Bae is looking back and seeing just how good they had it with you. YOUR MOVE: Just. Say. No. Their history speaksfor itself, and there’s no need for you to revisit those dark days. THEY FREAKED OUT You told them you loved them…and they froze. After nearly a week ofsilence, they’re asking to hang out again. THEIR MOTIVE: Clearly, they weren’t prepared to hear the “L” word and went silent because they didn’t know how to respond. YOUR MOVE: Give them another chance, but don’t repeat those three little words quite yet.Just can’t contain your affection? Tell them things like, “I love how you make me laugh.” You’ll get your point across. THEY EMBARRASSED YOU You just finished tryouts for the JV cheer squad, and your crush starts cracking up over how rough your tumbling skills are— in front of your entire friend group. Later, they say they hope you’re not upset. THEIR MOTIVE: Seems counterintuitive, but some crushes think “playful teasing” is a great way to get your attention and show interest. Sound unlikely? Not if you’re still pretty new to relationships (which, hello, most of your peers are). YOUR MOVE: Honesty. Tell them that you’re upset and don’t want to be the target of their joke. It may be the wake-up call they need to treat you with kindness. No joke! C RUSHES Should you give bae another shot? They blew it—and now they want you back. Here are 5 ways to tell if your former flame is worth the effort.

48 GL FEBRUARY | MARCH 2023 that’s a good fit where you’ll make more amazing friends. As for crying? Heck, it’s part of being alive. I wish I could set you up with a cup of tea and maybe a kitten. I can’t. But I can applaud you for being a hard worker and remind you to be honest with your friends. They are no doubt stressing, too, so why pretend with each other? And while I hope you hear from the school of your dreams, don’t imagine that you’re a lesser person if you don’t. You can learn lots and make friends at whatever school you go to. Most of us attended ninth grade at the nearest public school and turned out just fine. Also, you’ll be applying for more schools and jobs down the road—this isn’t the end of the line. So ease up on the pressure. you. I realize that there’s a big possibility that I’m not going to the best school. I know I might not really be as great as people say. All of my high school applications are in. The wait is nerve-wracking. And today, I just burst. I tripped and fell, hard. I don’t think I normally would have cried, but I literally bawled my eyes out. I never thought someone could feel this way and I assumed those who did were just being dramatic. But now I’m one of those people. And I have never felt so alone. Dear Stressed About Applications, You’re not alone. Matter of fact, you’re in excellent company. Good for you for being a top student. I bet you’ll end up at a school VALENTINE CONFUSION I like a guy and Ithink he likes me, butI’m notsure if I’m ready to tell him. I don’tfeel ready to date becausewe’re only freshmen in high school. I’ve liked him for a few months, but doesn’tliking someone mean youwant to date them? And if I’m notready, then do I have to stop liking him? Dear Valentine Confusion, You may be overthinking this. There are no real rules, and it’s not a game of Red Light, Green Light. Since you like him, I hope he likes you, too. Does he make an effort to hang out with you? Does he smile and brighten when you talk? Rather than worrying that you’re not ready to tell him that you like him, just take your time and keep enjoying the signals you two are sending back and forth. No need to rush your crush— or yourself. Try to enjoy this phase. STRESSED ABOUT APPLICATIONS I am 14 and I go to a small middle school that ends in eighth grade. I have amazing friends, but even the most amazing people can’t understand you perfectly. That may be my fault. I tell them so many things, just not the part about me lying when I say I’m not worried or stressed about high school. I’m one of the smart kids—one of those kids who everyone thinks is going to go to one of the top schools in the world. But what stinks about being the smart kid is all of the expectations that get put on ELVA ETIENNE/GETTY IMAGES. Dear Carol BY CAROL WESTON
