PAGE 10 AZ COURIER NEWS MARCH 2024 PINAL COUNTY’S ECONOMIC RENAISSANCE: CULTIVATING HIGH-PAYING JOBS AND QUALITY OF LIFE EDITORIAL Pinal County is undergoing a transformative economic boom, spearheaded by an influx of high-tech industries and strategic development initiatives. James Smith, Director of Economic and Workforce Development for Pinal County, reports an impressive addition of 13,500 new jobs in electric vehicles, battery manufacturing, and consumer goods, signaling a shift towards a more diversified and sustainable economy. APACHE JUNCTION: With a forwardlooking approach, Apache Junction is actively pursuing new opportunities in manufacturing and distribution, laying the groundwork for future economic growth and job creation. COOLIDGE: The allocation of 2,700 acres for development, particularly for projects involving industry leaders like Nikola and P&G, reflects Coolidge's commitment to fostering innovation and attracting investment in cutting-edge technologies. ELOY: Positioned as a key player in supporting manufacturing growth, Eloy's emphasis on infrastructure development and distribution networks is instrumental in fueling the region's economic expansion. FLORENCE: Beyond economic endeavors, Florence's focus on community development, exemplified by El Dorado Holdings' masterplan for affordable housing, coupled with an expansion in copper production, underscores its commitment to balanced growth and sustainability. MARICOPA: As one of Arizona's safest cities, Maricopa is not only enhancing its quality of life with recreational amenities like the new surf park and luxury motorsports club but also fostering economic growth through diversification and tourism. CASA GRANDE: With Lucid Motors' expansion and the establishment of distribution centers for major retailers like Walmart, alongside the inauguration of a Kohler manufacturing plant and semiconductor manufacturing, Casa Grande is solidifying its position as an economic powerhouse in the region. QUEEN CREEK / SAN TAN: The expansion of SR-24 and the establishment of LG's battery plant are poised to create 3,700 new jobs, signaling a promising future for these areas in terms of economic development and employment opportunities. EASTERN PINAL: Home to thriving copper mines and burgeoning tourism, Eastern Pinal is contributing significantly to the region's economic vitality and cultural richness. Despite these advancements, Pinal County faces a challenge: 80% of its workforce commutes outside the county for employment, resulting in significant time and resource drain. Recognizing this issue, Pinal County is intensifying efforts to bring high-paying jobs closer to home. By reducing commute times, families will enjoy a better work-life balance, with more time for shared activities and community engagement. As Pinal County strives to reshape its economic landscape, the focus on creating local employment opportunities not only bolsters the region's economy but also enhances the well-being and cohesion of its communities, reflecting a commitment to sustainable growth and prosperity for all residents. PAGE 12 AZ COURIER NEWS MARCH 2024 ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGE OF UNHOUSED INDIVIDUALS IN APACHE JUNCTION: A CALL FOR COMMUNITY SOLUTIONS COMMUNITY In the vast expanse of Arizona’s East Valley, particularly in the Apache Junction area, a complex issue is unfolding—unhoused individuals seeking refuge on public lands. While the allure of the desert landscape may offer temporary respite, the consequences of this transient lifestyle are leaving a lasting mark on our environment and community. The Problem: Under current regulations, it’s legal for individuals to camp on public land for up to 14 days. Exploiting this loophole, unhoused individuals migrate to the desert, setting up makeshift camps that become hubs of activity for extended periods. However, what they leave behind is far from temporary. Mountains of trash, abandoned vehicles, toxic burn piles, and human waste mar the natural beauty of our desert, turning it into an eyesore and environmental hazard. The Response: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) acknowledges the challenge and has taken steps to address it. Regular patrols are conducted, and unhoused individuals are informed of camping limits and referred to local services. However, the scale of the issue exceeds the BLM’s capacity to manage alone. The Tonto National Forest, too, is grappling with similar challenges. They are actively collaborating with state, local, and federal agencies to find solutions. Increased enforcement and camping closures are among the measures taken to mitigate the impact of long-term illegal camping. Proposed Solutions: While enforcement measures are necessary, a long-term solution requires a multifaceted approach that addresses the root causes of homelessness and promotes sustainable alternatives. Here are some ideas: Community Outreach and Support: Strengthen partnerships with local organizations to provide outreach, resources, and support services to unhoused individuals, addressing their immediate needs while facilitating pathways to stability. Sustainable Housing Solutions: Explore innovative housing models, such as tiny homes or transitional shelters, to provide safe and dignified housing options for unhoused individuals. Environmental Restoration Initiatives: Mobilize community volunteers for regular clean-up efforts to restore and preserve the natural beauty of our desert landscape. Education and Awareness: Raise awareness about the environmental and social impact of illegal camping through community workshops, educational campaigns, and outreach programs. Policy Advocacy: Advocate for policy changes at the local and state levels to address gaps in existing regulations and enhance support systems for unhoused individuals. Join the Conversation: This issue affects us all, and your input is invaluable. Visit our Facebook page at www. facebook.com/arizonanewsnetwork to share your thoughts on potential solutions. Together, we can work towards creating a more inclusive, compassionate, and sustainable community for all. Let’s come together to address this challenge and build a brighter future for Apache Junction and beyond. Travis Mahaffey Arizona Courier News 5301 S. PAGE 15 AZ COURIER NEWS MARCH 2024 ‘FOOL’S CANYON GOLD’ THE KOLLENBORN CHRONICLES Thomas J. Kollenborn © December 9, 1997 Somewhere in the Superstition Wilderness is located a rugged and secluded canyon. Old timers called it Fool’s Canyon. The canyon has been the center of a lost gold mine tale for more than one hundred years. The story goes something like this. An army patrol camped near Dismal Valley in 1870 found two Mexican prospectors who were dehydrated and near death. It was quite apparent the two men had suffered several days of extreme hardship in rugged country. Their feet were raw from walking on rocks without shoes. They were severely sunburned and near total exhaustion from the lack of water. The officer in charge had no means by which to transport the two Mexicans to safety. He did give them water and food, and then explained how they could find the Rio Salado. The two Mexican prospectors begged the officer and his men not to abandon them because the Apache would surely find and kill them. One of the Mexicans told of a rich gold deposit they had been working to the east of Picacho. He explained the vein was so rich the gold could be carved out with a knife. The Mexicans said the entire patrol would be rich if they would help them get back to Fort McDowell safely. The members of the Army patrol did not see any real evidence of rich gold ore therefore they left them behind with a limited supply of water and food. Only one of the Mexicans survived the ordeal at Dismal Valley. The prospector eventually made his way out to the Rio Salado and downriver to Maryville’s Crossing. After being abandoned in the middle of Apache country by the Army, the survivor did not want anything to do with Anglos. An Anglo blacksmith named Bill Cage, married to a Caborca woman, befriended the survivor of Dismal Valley. After several years of friendship the location of Fool’s Canyon was revealed to Bill Cage. Cage was told to travel east across the desert to Tanque Prieta, then on to Picacho. Picacho is a tall peak east of Sierra Superstition. Once near Picacho, travel eastward around a giant mountain surrounded by a barranca, then through a large box canyon. From the box canyon travel on eastward across red rolling hills until coming to a deep canyon. Once in the canyon walk upstream to the head of the canyon. At this point follow a high narrow ridge until a rugged mountaintop covered with large boulders is in sight. Near the base of the mountain, on the east side is a canyon with [sheer] walls. At this point, enter the canyon. The canyon is so narrow, it is apparent it will soon dead end. At the point where the canyon is arms’ length narrow, there will be another tributary with two deep tinajas. This is the mouth of Fool’s Canyon or, as we call it, Canon del Tonto. Once in the canyon climb out on a ridge. Just above, locate a large crack in the earth’s surface. It is here the gold will be found. Bill Cage spent many years searching the area around Sawtooth Ridge and Rock Creek for Fool’s Canyon (Canon del Tonto), but never had any success locating a rich gold vein. Bill did find an excellent placer claim in Gold Rush Creek east of Pinto Creek in 1903. Most skeptics would not believe the story of Fool’s Canyon. The truth lies somewhere between fantasy and reality. Cage believed Fool’s Canyon was Gold Rush Creek because of the gold he found there. Cage admitted in 1959, when he was near death, that he didn’t think the two canyons were one in the same. His reasoning was based on not finding the two stone tinajas. If the Gold Rush Creek wasn’t Fool’s Canyon, maybe someday a lucky prospector will discover those two tinajas and find the gold of Fool’s Canyon. There was other activity at Goldfield during the mid-forties. The Shumways were in control of the main claims. Alfred Strong Lewis, a mining man in the area worked at Goldfield some twenty-five year prior in the Young era. Lewis obtains a lease on the Queen and Mammoth Mines, He truly believes the best place to look for gold is where gold has been before. He is right, as we shall see. Lewis is confident. He will reopen the mines. He is searching diligently looking for ore the old timers missed and using all his experience. His reputation is on the line. Sound familiar? It was some time during the mid to late forties. He started to open pit the vein at the Mammoth, almost directly over the Mormon Stop. Some say he used a drag line. I’ve seen the pictures of a truckmounted gas engine shovel. They probably used a dozer to start the hole. He did indeed produce some gold. About $43,000.00 came out during the is time period. This amount was what was claimed. You can bet there was more pulled out. Ch.5 Deals, Deals & More Deals GOLDFIELD GHOST TOWN 4650 N Mammoth Mine Rd. PAGE 19 AZ COURIER NEWS MARCH 2024 WELLNESS BY DR. KYLE NEELEY I truly appreciate people who realize good things come to those who work at it. Nothing in life is free and taking a bigger interest in your life and movement is a great investment that continues to pay dividends for as long as you live. GOLF, when you are not playing your best game, it is often YOU and not your clubs, the weather, or the condition of the Course you are playing. If your mobility in your neck, shoulders, back, hips, knees, and ankles are stiff with limited mobility, your game will badly suffer. Also, when your muscles and tendons have not been balanced so that they work in concert with your skeleton to help power a seamless game; it is near impossible to play your best. PICKLEBALL, what a fun and great sport to get your cardiovascular system working and having fun playing and fun playing with others. What’s possible, is being adjusted, massaged, and tuning all your joints so that you are able to play and come home feeling energized, instead of, sore and painful. Running, Cycling, Rock Climbing, Getting Up off the toilet easily without strain, Moving with Ease, all these things and the sports listed above share a common denominator. Focusing on Joint Range of Motion treatments help with mobility. For Golf and Other sports, there are specific types of treatments tailored to the specific sport to enhance your game. There are many ways to assist the body and a large group of treatments that can help: Rejuvenation Massage, Manipulations that are low force, slow, corrective treatment, Acupuncture, Cold Laser/LED Treatments, and many nutritional things that can truly help lower your inflammation profile and help you to Maximize you Movement and Reduce Your Pain. INFLAMMATION When most of us think about inflammation we think of hitting an arm or leg, taking an Advil and forgetting about it. But the story of Inflammation goes far deeper. It is the first signal that something is not working well and needs assistance, but we often just blow it off and try to forget about it. Only to allow an ACUTE situation to build up to CHRONIC DESTRUCTION of our JOINTS, MUSCLES, TENDONS, and our Nervous SYSTEMS. The Five parts to inflammation are Pain, Heat, Redness, Swelling, and Loss of Function The messengers of inflammation are Prostaglandins, Bradykinins, Histamines, Interleukins, Insulin, and Cytokines. The pathways of inflammation are Acute, Subacute, Chronic, and then the last Final Phase. The takeaway point to all of this is that if you do not handle the issue of inflammation, then it continues to go deeper and involve more biological structures. So even muscle pulls, Strains, Sprains, and inflammation of the joints start to degrade into a chronic state and then destruction begins. If you are able, it is important to TAKE ACTION EARLY. If the joint is injured or not moving, you should seek help. Because even though the pain may go away, it does not mean that everything is working the way it should or that you have eliminated the inflammation in that area. People often do not realize that you can have inflammation anywhere and in every tissue and organ system. Even the Nervous system can get inflamed and this is certainly more important to mediate; otherwise, a chronic state can set in which causes a whole host of problems. FOODS that CAUSE INFLAMMATION Ultimately, reducing inflammation is a huge thing we are all facing. As currently 80% of Ultimately, reducing inflammation is a huge thing we are all facing. PAGE 20 AZ COURIER NEWS MARCH 2024 TASTING THROUGH TOWN: ARIZONA COURIER’S CULINARY CHRONICLES RESTAURANT At the Arizona Courier News, we’re passionate about showcasing the best of our community, especially when it comes to food. Join us on a delectable journey through some of our favorite local spots, where every bite tells a story. From savory pastries to classic barbecue and innovative sandwiches, let’s savor the flavors of SonSons Pasty Co, Tumbleweed, Los Gringos Loco’s, Big Nate’s BBQ, and Knuckle Sandwich. Get ready to indulge in culinary delights that define our town’s vibrant dining scene: Tumbleweed Let me tell you about Tumbleweed – a place that knows how to do classic comfort food right. Their chicken tenders and fries are not just any old dish; they’re a trip down memory lane, perfectly crispy and tender. But that’s not all – my visit coincided with one of their lively karaoke nights, and I had a blast watching the community come together for some good old-fashioned fun. You’ll find Tumbleweed at 725 W Apache Trail, where the food and the atmosphere combine for an unforgettable experience. Los Gringos Locos I recently gathered a diverse group of friends, ranging from ages 8 to 70, and Los Gringos Locos was the perfect spot to please everyone. From the moment we dipped into their trio of sensational salsas, I knew we were in for a treat. I opted for the Monterey Burrito, smothered in a heavenly poblano cream sauce that left me licking my lips in satisfaction. The ambiance was lively and inviting, and while I didn’t indulge in their tantalizing margaritas this time, they’re definitely on my list for next visit. Find this gem of a restaurant at 280 S Phelps Dr for a fiesta for your taste buds. Big Nate’s BBQ Picture this: it’s Friday night after a football game, and my family is ravenous. Big Nate’s BBQ came to our rescue with their mouthwatering small family pack, featuring succulent brisket, juicy pulled pork, and flavorful jalapeño cheddar sausage. We paired it with cornbread and pasta salad for a feast fit for royalty. And the best part? We had leftovers for days! Ordering online was a breeze, saving us precious time to enjoy our meal. Swing by either of their locations at 6750 E Main St or 1722 N Banning St for a taste of barbecue bliss. Knuckle Sandwich As an Arizona native, I was thrilled to discover Knuckle Sandwich, a haven for Chicago-inspired sandwiches. Their menu is a treasure trove of flavors waiting to be explored, and I couldn’t resist trying the Hot Stuff Chicken Sandwich. The combination of blackened chicken, jack cheese, onions, peppers, and sriracha mayo on a sourdough bun was simply divine. What really impressed me was the freshness of the chicken – you could taste the difference. With a bustling atmosphere that speaks to their quality, Knuckle Sandwich is a must-visit spot located at 1140 N Higley Rd for sandwich aficionados like me. SonSons Pasty Co Let me introduce you to a little slice of culinary heaven known as SonSons Pasty Co. Every time I place an order, it’s an adventure in flavor exploration. I love trying something new each visit, but I always make sure to stock up on my all-time favorites to have on hand for those busy days when I need a quick and satisfying meal. One of the best things about their pasties is their ability to freeze perfectly, ensuring that they’re always at the ready when hunger strikes. My personal go-to? The Chicken Green Chili pasty, a mouthwatering masterpiece that I can’t resist dipping into their incredible brown gravy. Visit them at either 6060 E Brown Rd or 1430 W Warner Rd and prepare to be delighted by their delectable offerings. TUMBLEWEED SONSONS PASTY CO. BIG NATE’S BBQ KNUCKLE SANDWICH LOS GRINGOS LOCOS

PAGE 28 AZ COURIER NEWS MARCH 2024 TRAVEL DISCOVERING THE JEWEL OF ARIZONA’S COAST: PUERTO PEÑASCO As the warm breeze beckons and the promise of turquoise waters dances in the minds of Arizonans, the name “Puerto Peñasco” often arises. Affectionately dubbed “Rocky Point,” this Mexican gem has long been the go-to beach destination for Arizona residents seeking sun, sand, and sea adventures. With its proximity to the border, it’s been the spring break paradise for many, offering a tantalizing escape just a fourhour drive away. However, recent border funding issues led to the closure of the Lukeville border crossing, creating a hiccup in the journey to this coastal haven. For those accustomed to the convenience of Lukeville, the closure sparked concerns and hesitations, leading many to question the safety of the alternative routes through Nogales or Yuma. With safety worries looming large, the allure of Rocky Point for spring break seemed too dim. Yet, amidst these concerns lies a story of resilience and determination. As someone who has witnessed Puerto Peñasco’s evolution over three decades, I can attest to its unwavering charm and the efforts made to ensure visitors’ safety. What sets Rocky Point apart is not just its pristine beaches and vibrant marine life but also the warm hospitality of its people and their dedication to providing a secure environment for tourists. The road from Sonoyta to Puerto Peñasco, often dubbed the “no hassle zone,” stands as a testament to the commitment of Sonora’s authorities to safeguard visitors. While apprehensions about cartel activities in Sonoyta may linger, it’s essential to heed the advice of locals and seasoned travelers. As long as one abides by the law, stays within the speed limits, and exercises common sense, the journey to Rocky Point can be a smooth and enjoyable one. I recently had the privilege of speaking with the owner of the Rocky Point Times newspaper, whose perspective echoes the sentiments of many longtime visitors. Her advice resonates: purchase insurance, stick with your group, and embrace the spirit of adventure with caution but without fear. Now, with the reopening of the Lukeville border crossing, a wave of relief washes over eager travelers, signaling the resurgence of Rocky Point’s allure. PAGE 32 AZ COURIER NEWS MARCH 2024 EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT: WHY EDUCATING YOURSELF AND VOTING IN THE PRESIDENTIAL PREFERENCE ELECTION MATTERS POLITICS As the Presidential Preference Election draws near, Arizonans stand at a pivotal juncture in shaping the future of our nation. This cornerstone of democracy presents us with the invaluable opportunity to participate in the selection of our nation’s leader. In the bustling landscape of modern life, it’s easy to overlook the significance of this event, but we must recognize that our voices, our choices, matter profoundly. First and foremost, we must emphasize the importance of education. In a world inundated with information, it can be daunting to discern fact from fiction, truth from spin. However, informed decision-making is the bedrock of a healthy democracy. Take the time to research the candidates, their policies, and their track records. Engage in thoughtful discussions, seek out diverse perspectives, and question the narratives presented to you. An educated electorate is the cornerstone of a robust democracy. Moreover, we must recognize that voting is not merely a right but a responsibility. It is a solemn duty that honors the sacrifices of those who fought for the freedoms we cherish today. Every vote cast is a testament to our commitment to the democratic process, a declaration of our collective will. By exercising our right to vote, we affirm our stake in the future of our country and our dedication to upholding the principles of liberty and justice for all. Furthermore, the Presidential Preference Election is not just about choosing a candidate; it’s about shaping the trajectory of our nation. It’s about championing the values and priorities that resonate with us, about envisioning the kind of society we want to live in and passing that vision onto future generations. Each vote cast reverberates beyond the confines of the ballot box, sending a resounding message to those in power and shaping the course of history. In Arizona, where our voices have the power to sway outcomes, our participation in the Presidential Preference Election is especially crucial. As a diverse and dynamic state, we have the opportunity to make our mark on the national stage, to amplify the issues that matter most to us, and to hold our elected leaders accountable. Let us not squander this opportunity but embrace it with fervor and determination. In conclusion, as the Presidential Preference Election approaches, let us commit ourselves to the principles of democracy: education, engagement, and participation. Let us arm ourselves with knowledge, wield our voices with conviction, and cast our votes with purpose. Our future depends on it. PAGE 35 AZ COURIER NEWS MARCH 2024 TODAY’S REAL ESTATE MARKET- WHERE WILL THE ROAD TAKE US IN 2024 REAL ESTATE We’ve all heard the saying “The only thing certain in life is death and taxes.” As that may be true, there is another saying that stands true… “Lower interest rates cultivate higher home prices.” It simply is Supply and Demand 101. So, what is the answer to navigating this current market whether you are buying or selling regardless of your age or situation? We need to dig a little deeper and shine the light on what’s to come in 2024. Did you know that the current median rent in the valley is $2,500? I have often wondered how does a single parent, working one or two jobs pay this? In comparison with today’s rates, that’s a 30yr. fixed mortgage on a home in the $350,000 to $400,000 range. Of course, that doesn’t go far in a town like Gilbert for example. However, there are countless areas in and around the valley where your money stretches a lot farther (Florence, San Tan, Buckeye, Casa Grande etc.) and living is more care free. Communities like these are beginning to build out at a rapid pace. Take a Sunday and drive down to one of these towns and see for yourself. These small towns will prosper and home values will increase as commercialized development make their footprints. Large manufacturing/warehousing companies will also move in and the demand for housing will continue to increase. It’s already happening and you see it. Take a look off Power rd. to the East and south of the 60 at all of the commercial warehouse space going up. It’s mindblowing. Don’t be afraid? There are countless loan programs out there tailored to fit a buyers need with little money down. And remember this…the days of 20 percent down payments just do not hold true anymore. On the flip side, we are in the third month of 2024 already. The valley’s “busy real estate market” is approaching quickly. Did you know that the month of May is the ideal month to sell your home in Arizona? If you are on the fence about selling, I’d like to offer some comfort in saying that buyers are out there. In the past 12 months, the average monthly inventory of homes on the market in the valley hovers right around 11,500 homes. That’s low. If I were thinking of selling, I would begin making preparations to “market” my home now. Which includes cleaning up the back yard, washing windows, organizing the garage, painting the front door, etc. etc. and I would not hesitate to list come the end of April or into May. Let’s face it, no one has the crystal ball or all the answers as to what will happen in the remainder of 2024. However, all predictions are that the rates will continue to drop. Fannie Mae predicts that the thirty-year fixed rate will drop below 6% by years end. I don’t want to bust anyone’s bubble, but the days of 2-3% rates are not coming back. I cannot stress enough to those waiting to buy to be careful! Do not wait yourself out of the opportunity to buy now. You can always “marry the home and date the payment and or rate”. What exactly does that mean? Simply find that forever home that your family truly loves. You may not like the interest rate or payment, but you can always, always Chris Church DPR Realty LLC www.c2sellsaz.com refinance when rates drop. A good loan officer will stay on top of that for you. The valley is right on the cusp of a seller’s market across all towns and cities. Buyers are out there, they are qualified, and they are seriously looking to buy. Baby boomers are considering downsizing, jobs are taking people in and out of our towns each and every day. Don’t be fooled to think that the frenzy of naming your price to sell is coming back like it did 2.5 years ago. Not in 2024. Buyers- Pick your poison. Do I want a little bit higher interest rate right now? (I can always refinance) OR do I wait for rates to drop and pay more for the house? Sellers-How bad do I need to sell? Can I wait to see rates drop and home prices increase? Is that any guarantee Ill get more for my home? Is the potential return worth the wait to me? The market can be tough. It can steer you down the wrong path before you know it. Trust your agent and surely make sure you have an agent who will work for you. BY CHRIS CHURCH

PAGE 40 AZ COURIER NEWS MARCH 2024 SWINGING FOR THE FENCES: THE BOOMING WORLD OF SENIOR SOFTBALL IN ARIZONA’S EAST VALLEY SPORTS/RECREATION Mesa, AZ - In the vibrant landscape of senior softball in Arizona’s East Valley, the game extends far beyond the city parks and recreation leagues. While these leagues remain popular and accessible options for players of all ages, there’s a hidden gem in the form of 55+ neighborhoods boasting their own teams and fields, akin to major league standards. Amidst the backdrop of manicured grass, pristine infields, and state-of-the-art facilities complete with bleachers and electronic scoreboards, senior softball thrives within these retirement communities. It’s not uncommon to find multiple teams within a single neighborhood, each competing with a passion that rivals any professional league. Organized by the retirement communities themselves, these leagues offer a dynamic blend of competition and camaraderie. With divisions catering to different skill levels, ranging from the highly competitive upper division to the more relaxed lower division, there’s a place for everyone on the field. For those in the upper division, the stakes are high, with teams comprised of seasoned veterans eager to showcase their skills and compete in annual tournaments. Meanwhile, the lower division welcomes casual athletes who are drawn to the sport’s social aspect and laid-back atmosphere. What sets senior softball apart is its inclusivity and accessibility. Unlike traditional leagues, high-level athleticism is not a prerequisite for participation. As the saying goes, if you can play pickleball or swing a golf club, you already possess the fundamental skills needed to excel in senior softball. Beyond the thrill of competition, senior softball fosters a sense of community and belonging. It’s not just about the game itself but the friendships forged both on and off the field. Whether it’s swapping stories in the dugout or celebrating victories at post-game gatherings, the bonds formed through senior softball endure long after the final out is called. While city leagues offer fantastic opportunities for seniors to stay active and engaged, the allure of neighborhood-based softball leagues cannot be overstated. With their meticulously maintained fields and vibrant community spirit, these leagues represent the beating heart of senior softball in the East Valley. Moreover, businesses like the AZ Batting Club in Mesa, located on Val Vista and Southern, serve as vital hubs for the softball community. Rusty Buchenauer, with his extensive knowledge at AZ Batting Club, played an integral role in shaping the insights of this article. Offering equipment, expert advice, and indoor batting cages for practice, places like AZ Batting Club further enhance the experience of senior softball enthusiasts, providing them with the tools they need to hone their skills and enjoy the game to the fullest.

PAGE 41 AZ COURIER NEWS MARCH 2024 So, whether you’re a seasoned player looking for a new challenge or a newcomer eager to try your hand at the sport, there’s never been a better time to step up to the plate and join the ranks of senior softball enthusiasts in Arizona’s East Valley. The Gilbert Police Department would like to make our community aware of a crime trend impacting different cities in the valley involving South American Theft Groups primarily targeting homes that back to golf courses, washes, or other open areas. Information at this time suggests that these burglaries occur when nobody is home. Gilbert PD has increased patrols of residential areas and we are working with our neighboring law enforcement partners to investigate and arrest those involved with these crimes. We would like to remind the community to consider the following tips as part of a nightly safety routine: Keep exterior and interior lights on specifically during the evening. Whether someone is home or not, make sure all doors and windows are locked, including those on the second floor of two-story homes and the door leading into the house from the garage. Consider installing home cameras or 24-hour monitoring alarm systems. Remember, if you see something, please say something by reporting suspicious activity to our non-emergency line at 480-503-6500. For emergencies, please call 9-1-1.
