Makeup is empowering and everyone should have the option of using it as a

where for every unit purchased, we give one to a woman in need, across the
world. We are partnering with a number of organisations to reach women from
all walks of life, including those trying to find jobs, below the poverty line, at-risk
women and teens,” says Amsterdam-based Mirza. The brand has launched three
lipsticks and is trying to follow all the tenets of sustainability the best way it can,
like sending out its lipsticks in reusable packaging. However, the actual product
is hard to recycle—lipstick parts are so small that the machines in the recycling
plants cannot recognise and sort them. What gives? “Unlike other lipsticks
in the market, we have filled our units with good intent. Most lipsticks have a
recommended use of about 12 months, but women often don’t finish a lipstick
within that time frame and wind up discarding it. So, we chose to have a slightly
smaller, thinner fill in our products, which makes application easy. You are much
more likely to finish this within its recommended shelf life, minimising waste.”

The essential oil distillery is self-sustaining

The beauty of sustainability
With environmental issues becoming alarmingly visible, it is time for your
skincare to be gentle on the planet. By Sanjana Salunkhe
“There is still hope,” I think, despite my disappointment as I open a package to
fi nd a pocket-sized lip and cheek tint encased in a cardboard box, sprinkled with
paper confetti and a 10-page booklet that tells me how to use it. As much as I ap-
preciate a multi-use product, the packaging weakens its purpose. Several metric
tonnes of plastic enter the ocean every year, with a considerable amount coming
from the beauty industry. As a consumer, knowing where to start can help begin
reversing the damage. Here, we break down the nuances of sustainable beauty to
help you make the right choice.
DECODING THE DILEMMA
Consumers and businesses have a sub-
stantial role to play when it comes to a
better future. But fi rst, issues like
ocean-polluting packaging, excess en-
ergy consumption, irresponsible
waste management and carbon foot-
print need to be addressed. “The idea

beauty really mean, according to Pamela Gill Alabaster
“It means ‘free of’, meaning the product is fragrance- and
silicone-free, but may consist of preservatives and chemicals.” “It is made without any animal
organic by-products or derivatives.”

Q: While building a home, what are things to keep an eye on?
A: The designer must study the vernacular and historic examples of architecture
in the area to understand how the previous generations were able to build
with minimal impact on the natural environment. She can then respond to
the modern needs of the client by creating a network of design factors and
simultaneously prioritise the environment and the community over other factors.
The form of the building will then be based on its natural surroundings, not as
an independent object and not by imitating architecture media or foreign forms.
Instead of putting the burden of adaptation on users, the design strategies
should strive to help the client achieve a healthy, resilient and sustainable lifestyle.

Q: How can green design practices be adopted in o ce
buildings that house IT paraphernalia and air-conditioning?
A: We should not be asking if we should be providing HVAC
(heating, ventilation and air conditioning), but how we can design
a building more e ciently to reduce the load on the HVAC. Can
we design them using materials that will lessen the heat load? Can
we use screening devices that are integral to the design? Can we
do green walls or minimise the use of glass on the south face?
How do we ensure that our electricity consumption, HVAC load
and water usage is optimised? It’s time to experiment with historic

not to let engineering dominate architecture but to work out an

Composting your food waste? Good on you! The kitchen is a great place to start

For a country that is home to 24 per

not only colossal, but alarming. Ac-
