Books for pilots

Die Flugzeugstars
F-104 Starfighter

The book describes in detail the F-104 Starfighter series,
the deployment with the German Army, the airframe and
SATS program and the Lockheed F-104CCV, an aircraft
with artificial stability. It also provides an overview of the
Starfighter in international service and an appendix with
technical data. Good photos show the different paint sche-
mes and supplement the detailed text of the individual chapters. Although the book does not con-
tain detailed photos, it is still worth reading for the Starfighter fan among model pilots.

DAeC and ÖAeC lead

fruitful conversations

In the course of the entry into force of the new EU drone regulation (implementing regulation
(EU) 2019/947), progress has also been made at international level. For the purpose of exchan-
ging views and coordination between Austria and Germany, the Federal Section Model Flight of
the Austrian Aero Club, the Federal Commission Model Flight DAeC and the MFSD met in Mu-
nich. In a very good atmosphere, important topics concerning the implementation of the new EU
aviation law were discussed and debated. Especially the registration and the proof of knowled-
ge as well as their mutual recognition in neighbouring countries were important topics. Both ÖA-
eC and DAeC agreed to hold talks on an international level with further neighbouring countries
in order to create as comparable and "permeable" structures as possible for model aircraft pilots
in Europe. The three associations agreed to hold further talks at the Friedrichshafen trade fair
with the aim of promoting model aviation across national borders.

Cooperation between PowerBox Systems
and Multiplex

Together in the field of
remote control technology

The companies PowerBox Systems and Multiplex have
decided to cooperate in the field of remote control techno-
logy. Since the announcement of the cooperation on 1st
November 2019 at the Faszination Modellbau trade fair in
Friedrichshafen, many customers have been asking them-
selves what this means, and what the collaboration will look
like. Due to the overwhelming and positive echo on all three
days of the trade fair, the companies would like to give cus-
tomers who weren't at the fair a more accurate picture: Un-
der the terms of the collaboration, the Multiplex company
will in future distribute the PowerBox CORE transmitter with
built-in M-Link technology. PowerBox Systems will start im-
plementing the hardware and software as soon as possible.
The effort required to implement M-Link technology in the
existing installation space is limited: the CORE transmitter is already prepared for such retrofits, both electronically and mechani-
cally. The M-Link system will be fully integrated, i.e. all M-Link receivers and also sensors can be used to the full extent as usual. The
CORE transmission system is of course also available. When binding the receivers, the customer therefore has the choice of bin-
ding an M-Link receiver or a PowerBox receiver!
Retrofitting is offered for CORE transmitters already sold. The transmitter can be sent in to PowerBox Systems to implement the
M-Link hardware. The transmitters are serviced by PowerBox Systems, and smaller conversions or retrofits are also carried out by
the Multiplex Service. Updates to the CORE firmware are the same for all transmitters, and are supplied by PowerBox Systems free
of charge - including implementation of the full range of functions. Of course, extensive testing will take up a large part of the im-
plementation, so that delivery of the first CORE transmitters with M-Link is planned for spring 2020. The price of the CORE M-Link
Set will be around € 2,690, and includes the CORE transmitter, an M-Link RX-9-DR, a transmitter case and the charger.

10. ROTOR live
14. and 15. march 2020

Europe's largest trade fair on the subject of model helicopters once again invites you to
two incomparable adventure days on 14 and 15 March 2020! For all interested parties and
fans of model helicopters, there will be a great opportunity to immerse themselves in the
fascinating world of these high-tech bolides and be inspired by the diversity of this "supre-
me discipline" of model flying. ROTOR live is much more than just a trade fair, as it is also
the kick-off for the new flying season and serves as a lively exchange of information for be-
ginners and experts. Whether at the exhibitor stands or at one of the lectures and workshops: here everyone will find answers and sup-
port around this fascinating hobby.
Around 3,000 square metres of action area, spread over several levels, invite you to discover and browse. From the small 3D indoor
tiny with a take-off weight of only a few grams to the impressive 50 kg scale model, which is modeled after the original down to the smal-
lest detail: ROTOR live presents the whole range of this unique hobby. But also equipment and accessories for the model workshop
are not neglected, because no matter if engine, controller or stabilisation system - with this exhibitor variety every pilot will find the right
accessories for the new season. In addition, the flight simulator stations invite you to try out new flight figures or to steer a helicopter for
the first time.
Another popular attraction for the public since the beginning of the fair is the all-day flight programme, where well over 100 pilots from
Germany and abroad show their skills. Whether top novelty or superscale model - our experienced pilots know how to control their he-
licopters and present them accordingly impressively. A fixed component of the flight programme is once again the 3D contest, in which
top international pilots compete with each other. The pilots are highly motivated to take part in this competition and provide many a he-
art-stopping finale.
Equally important are our free workshops and lectures, which are met with great interest by the visitors. The topics are again very di-
verse in 2020 and appeal to both beginners and advanced pilots.
Further information about the fair, directions and an overview of all exhibitors can be found on our homepage www.rotor-live.de. You
are on Facebook? Then visit us at www.facebook.com/ROTORlive; there you will be provided with the latest news about the fair.
We are looking forward to your visit at Europe's largest trade fair for model helicopters!

EMFU-Workshop

Exchange of information

A workshop on the new European regulation for unmanned aerial vehicles took place in Friedrichshafen on 2 November 2019.
The central topic was planning the implementation of the new EU regulations. This is particularly important for the operation of fo-
reign pilots as tourists or in competitions with regard to insurance, future mandatory registration and mutual recognition of proof of
competence. In almost all countries, the aim is to obtain an operating licence in accordance with § 16 of the "UAV Ordinance". The
greatest progress is likely to be made in Norway, which has a virtually complete set of regulations that are recognised as the basis
for an operating licence by the competent authority. In Switzerland there is an agreement with the authority that the current practi-
ce will be continued. In Germany there is a set of rules and regulations as a basis for a type approval, which still needs to be dis-
cussed with the BMVI. In Austria there is also a set of rules. Finland is planning a special path, which aims at the designation of mo-
del flying areas without a special operating permit. The subject of U Space was also discussed In the course of this discussion, the
representative of the SMV (Swiss Model Flight Association) proposed that model flight should not be excluded from the scope of U
Space, although this is provided for in the current draft regulation. It was further agreed that there should be follow-up meetings,
which will then be held as online meetings.

Important dates of the year 2020 in detail

The calendar for the year 2020 is again filling up with some top-class jet events. If you also have a jet date, please let us know by sending an
e-mail to w.ohlgart@t-online.de.

25. – 26. April 2020
Rookie-Meeting at

MFC Hofheim

Unfortunately, after the rookie meeting in 2019,
the Sportfliegerklub Darmstadt informed me that
they are no longer able to hold the rookie meeting
for the 400 Euro contribution I paid to the club.
The amount of work is in no relation to the profit.
On enquiries I learned that the club had received
an additional 800 Euro for each rookie meeting
without my knowledge from Marc Fröhn, which
are now obviously missing. It has to be said that I
bring the whole organisation with me and the
club is allowed to keep the proceeds of the food sales in addition to the 400 Euros. From the participation fees the hotel rooms
for the flight instructors and a small travel allowance are paid. For this the flight instructors provide their models and partly also
their own kerosene.
Since I refused to increase the participation fees and I can only distribute the money I earn, that was it. Marc Petrac came to my as-
sistance in the search for a new club. He put me in touch with Markus Ammon from MFC Hofheim. Our first contact was a complete
success for me. The club is looking forward to hosting the 22nd Rookie Meeting. This will take place on 25 and 26 April 2020 at the
Aeroclub Bad Königshofen (www.amhimmelreich.com). The internet address is program, because the infrastructure is unique. Thanks
to the large clubhouse we will celebrate our rookie party on Saturday evening at the airfield. Camping is also no problem on site, be-
cause showers and toilets are available. Oh yes, also the 400 Euro for the club were ok without any demand. So we are looking forward
to our new hosts, the Aeroclub Bad Königshofen.
Registrations for the 22nd Rookie Meeting are now possible by e-mail at w.ohlgart@t-online.de. We need the address with telepho-
ne, the transmitter mode and the information which transmitter you use.

23. and 24. Mai 2020
Faszination Luftsport at the Siegerland airport

On the weekend of 23 to 24 May 2020 Siegerland Airport will be closed for one of the largest air shows with originals and model
aircraft in Europe. There we will be presenting a selection of the best model pilots in Germany with their models of the Mustang, Fw
190, AT-6, Bo 105, Extra 300 and other highlights from the world of large-scale aviation. Every hour the programme changes bet-
ween the originals and the models, with a cross-section of the history of aviation being presented in model flight. Wolfgang Klühr is
primarily responsible for the model selection, who will personally invite the pilots. Winfried Ohlgart is planning the programme with
him and will comment on the event together with Josef Voss. Everyone who is interested in flying should keep this date in mind.

2020 is again the year of the traditional JetCat
air show in Müllheim. Not only the best jet pilots
will meet there, but everyone who is interested in
jet aviation will be there. Nobody will miss this da-

24. – 26. Juli 2020
International

German Masters

Formation Flying

with Jetmodels in
Herrieden-Stadel

After 2018 we will be guests in Herrieden-Stadel
again, before the German Championship in 2021
will take place in Breitscheid. This competition is
first and foremost intended for the public, which is
why the original invitation to tender also placed
great emphasis on the show. Unfortunately, by in-
corporating the competition into the IJMC programme, the call for entries has moved further away from this original idea and im-
posed significant restrictions on the teams. Therefore, in consultation with the organizer, we have returned to the "old" call for en-
tries and will no longer conduct the com-
petition under the umbrella of the IJMC.
Another reason for the cancellation is the
costs for five judges and the entry fee per
pilot, which has to be paid to the IJMC.
Since the competition is financed exclu-
sively by sponsors, significant savings
can be made here.
Registrations are now possible by
e-mail to w.ohlgart@t-online.de.

Graupner no longer exists in Germany

Graupner / SJ GmbH announced in a press release that the site in Kirchheim / Teck will probably be closed. Graupner / SJ is a mo-
del building company with a very long tradition. It was founded in 1930 by Johannes Graupner in Stuttgart-Wangen and under the tra-
de name Graubele. Now in the long run the business operations at this location in Germany will be discontinued. An application for the
initiation of insolvency proceedings due to imminent insolvency has already been filed. Here the complete press release:

South Korean parent company Graupner Co, Ltd
carries out a restructuring and relocates Production
back to headquarters

The parent company Graupner Co, Ltd of Graupner / SJ GmbH, located in Kirchheim, Germany, is closing its manufacturing plant for
Graupner products in China. The extremely tense market situation in the company's environment for a long time and the constant loss and
insolvency of many global OEM / ODM customers makes the continuation of the manufacturing operation in Shenzhen / China still unprofi-
table, even after restructuring has been completed. Rising wages, taxes and costs of manufacturing in China as well as imitation products
and direct imports also made the situation more difficult. In contrast, products from the remote control segment of the Graupner HoTT brand
are enjoying growing demand. The demand for charging technology, servos and other RC electronics also remains stable. The focus and
continuation of the production and development of precisely these core products will take place directly at the headquarters of the parent
company near Seoul. In addition to streamlining the corporate structure and increasing efficiency, this should also benefit direct control and
influence on the production processes and quality control. "Made in South Korea" will in future raise the quality standard of Graupner pro-
ducts even further.
For the sales department and thus directly for Graupner / SJ GmbH, this reorientation and restructuring of Graupner Co. Graupner Co.,
Ltd. will generate completely new distribution channels within the scope of the restructuring and relocation of production, so that Graupner
/ SJ GmbH in Kirchheim will no longer be part of the distribution chain. Due to the reorientation, Graupner / SJ GmbH in Kirchheim will no
longer receive any products or support. As Graupner / SJ GmbH in Kirchheim does not have any in-house production, this reduction of the
portfolio, restructuring and relocation of production back to the headquarters means that the business operations in Kirchheim / Teck with
the corresponding storage capacity, staffing levels and cost structure will be foreseeable and no longer competitive in the long term. Without
the delivery of goods / products and provision of support, Graupner / SJ GmbH has no future. The high costs existing at the Kirchheim lo-
cation can therefore not be compensated. In order to avoid a long agony of Graupner / SJ GmbH, to have planning security for all parties in-
volved quickly, Graupner / SJ GmbH has filed for the initiation of insolvency proceedings due to imminent insolvency. It had to be taken into
account that all know-how, including trademark rights, is owned by Graupner Co., Ltd.
Graupner Co., Ltd. will provide separate information on future sales and distribution partners and thus the nationwide assurance of sup-
plies to Graupner customers as well as the service of Graupner core products.
My comment

This message came unexpectedly for the employees in Kirchheim / Teck and was a shock for all model pilots, not only in Germany.
My first thought was: Good that Hans Graupner does not have to witness this anymore! We all associate the name Graupner with mo-
del making par excellence. Like many others, I took my first steps into remote control flying with the Amigo II. The trade fair appearan-
ces in Nuremberg were always an experience and when Hans Graupner invited me into the holy of holies, his meeting room, it was li-
ke a knightly accolade. I am proud to have had a very special relationship with Hans Graupner. He supported the idea of rookie mee-
tings and promoted the up-and-coming jet aviation with his own products. I was allowed to organize the great jubilee flight day for the
75th anniversary of the company on the Hahnweide. An event that will remain in the memory of all participants.
Now everything is over and I will miss the Graupner company and I would not know of anyone who could fill this gap. What remains
for me are the memories, old photos and letters and the one or other catalogue. Everything has suddenly become a valuable memen-
to. I very much hope that all employees will soon get a good job again and I wish them a lot of strength for a new beginning.

EU aviation law for model flying

The Federal Model Flight Commission in the DAeC has laid a milestone in the development of the foundations for the implementati-
on of European regulations for its members: The "Standardized Rules for Model Flights" (StRfF) are ready. For this purpose, countless
legal texts, ordinances, notices to airmen, ascent permits or terrain permits and flight regulations have been viewed and processed over
the past 18 months. All sports and technical advisers have been involved for their respective areas and model flight classes in order to
be able to incorporate the respective special features in the best possible and practical way.

Nitro Days

Continuation of a success story

With its 730 m long and 30 m wide asphalt track, the course
offers the ideal conditions for the meeting. The queue at the
flight line proves that the interest in the event is unbroken.

The origin of the largest Austrian jet meeting is more than a
quarter of a century ago. In the small town of Punitz in Bur-
genland, a handful of courageous pilots met every year to de-
monstrate their noisy models with the new combustion-impel-
ler technology of the time to an astonished audience. The na-
me "Nitro Days" comes from the fact that at that time the
engines did not deliver the required performance without ad-
ding 30 to 40 % nitromethane to the fuel. Peter Cmyral was the
organizer at that time and is still active in this function today.
The original venue Punitz is long gone, but the Nitro Days live
on and have been held at the large Niederöblarn airport for se-
veral years now. The number of participating pilots has remai-
ned constant over the past few years. So on the first weekend At the Flightline visitors have the opportunity to view the
of October from 4 to 6 October, 57 pilots with 90 models from models and ask questions to the pilots.

I admit it, when a fellow pilot asked me if I could

had a hard time. Can a complete package, i.e. a

The first impression
The model is delivered well packed and arrived safely. Af-
ter unpacking, however, you will soon realize that the model
does not come close to the quality standards of other manu-
facturers on the market. But of course, this cannot be the ca-
se either, as it costs practically half or even less. For example,
the connectors for the wings, tailplane and rudder have play
and are made of simple thin aluminium. The tailplane can still
be moved forward after screwing. The paint flakes off easily

Our jet models have become more and more elaborate over time. Besides landing flaps, airbrakes and
slats, an electric retractable landing gear with brake and lighting with landing light and position flasher
are almost standard equipment. This also means thicker wiring harnesses in the wings, which have to
be connected when assembling the model. Where a multiplex plug with its six connections for the aile-
ron and flap servo used to be sufficient, today we sometimes see designs which make use of computer
plugs. One should always keep in mind that these connections are vital for the survival of our model.

nels, which are equipped with redundant contact pairs for two
servos and allow currents of about 10 A. Four secondary con-
tacts (4S) are of simple design and can carry currents of up to
5 A permanently. These contacts can be used for lights, lan-
ding gear, brakes etc. We strongly advise against using secon-
dary contacts for important servos. 9P4S therefore means ni-
ne primary channels (9P) for three servos and four secondary
contacts (4S) for accessories.
The connector systems also fall into the following groups: Ca-
ble, Direct and Header. In the Cable group the system is supplied
with three metres of cable, with the plug and socket connected
to the cables, so that they can be separated according to the
lengths required. The female part is located in a mounting frame
that is screwed to the fuselage or wing. The plug part is not per-
manently installed, but is pushed on during assembly and held
in position with two strong clamps. The difference to the cable
system in Direct consists of a plug and a socket which can be fit-
ted in the fuselage, and which automatically makes the plug con-
nection when the wing is pushed out. The header system is si-
milar to the Direct system, but without the cable, but the packa-
ge contains two systems. For all cable systems a mounting
template, fixing screws and the appropriate screwdriver are sup-
plied. Let's take a closer look at the individual systems.

Uzman currently runs four model making shops in Dubai alo-
ne. Super equipment and of course everything that is good and
expensive is in stock. But even for the average model builder,
the range is impressively extensive. The shops are packed up
to the ceiling. The sellers all come from India or Pakistan and
know the model making business inside out. All branches of
air, water and land are represented here. However, the main
business of the model building dealers here is with large RC
cars. These are extremely popular in the UAE. Of course, on-
line trading is flourishing here too, but I was surprised how ma-
ny customers come into the shops during the day and shop
profusely. A dream for retail stores. They open their doors
around 10 a.m. and stay open until 10 p.m. all week. Although
they have just introduced a 5% VAT rate in the UAE, Uzman re-
mains calm: "We continue to sell tax-free. And worldwide". So
if you are a tourist or business traveller in the Emirates and you
are a model pilot, an extended visit to one of the model shops
there is a must.
"Pick a plane here, my men will fix it up. You can fly it tomor-

nerous offer. I know 5:30 is really early, especially on vacation,
but I was curious. The model airfield is located about 35 km
outside the city. You can easily reach it via highway E66 from
Dubai to Al Ain. Originally it was located at the city limits near
the Dubai International Airport. But here there were repeated
incidents with drones. Flight operations had to be suspended
a few times for security reasons and the airport closed. Losses
in the millions, even in Dubai, cannot be sustained over the
long term. So it was decided to relocate the model airfield. And
within a very short time a new airfield was built in the desert ne-

JP TIGER WITH EFFECT

Wake vortices

on the jet model

We are all familiar with the wake vortices that occur at the wingtips of man-carrying jets when they
fly through tight curves at high speed. Due to the extreme negative pressure at the wingtips, the water
contained in the air condenses and is visible as white wake vortices.

With our jet models, this effect cannot be achieved even in wings are activated and generate a white wake vortex, just like

And so I installed the system in my CARF-Eurosport (see Jet-

and right recesses. At the back right is the smoke pump and at
the back left the small 300 ml-tank for the smoke oil. The two
valves are for the adjustment of the smoke tubes left and right.
The SmokeDriver is located at the front of the servo for the ca-
nards and is also supplied from the drive battery on impeller
models. In jet models with turbine a separate 6s LiPo battery
must be used.
This completes the installation of the components in the fu-
selage. Now the evaporators on the wings are still missing. In
the Eurofighter the vaporizers are located on the outer weapon
carrier. To attach the weapon carrier, two wooden dowels are
laminated into the wing and then the weapon carrier is screwed
onto them. Finally, a hose for the smoke-oil and a cable for the
heating are pulled through the hollow surface - that's it. The ca-
ble and hose are simply fed into the fuselage and connected
when the model is assembled. The total additional weight for
the smoke system is about 500 g.
The wake vortices look fantastic in the blue sky and can also
be switched on manually.
