Welcome to
Israel and Petra

Holy sites and beachside hedonism, ancient ruins and
Bauhaus buildings, desert oases and Galilean springs –
Israel and Petra combine the age-old and the high-tech,
the earthy and the spiritual. Add excellent cuisine and wines
and you have a feast for the senses, mind, and spirit. With
Eyewitness Top 10 Israel & Petra, it is yours to explore.

In Jerusalem, the three great Abrahamic faiths connect with their
ancient sources. Jews the world over pray toward Jerusalem, and
when here flock to the Western Wall, a remnant of the Holy Temple
that once stood on the Temple Mount. For many Christians, no site
is more sacred than the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where it
is believed that Jesus was crucified, buried, and resurrected. In
nearby Bethlehem, the Church of the Nativity marks what many
believe is Jesus’ birthplace. Muslims venerate Al-Aqsa Mosque
and the Dome of the Rock, both on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount
(Al-Haram ash-Sharif). The city’s Israel Museum displays artifacts
that bring ancient times to life.
Dynamic Tel Aviv-Jaffa, an economic powerhouse, has fine-sand
Mediterranean beaches, as well as excellent museums, shopping, and
nightlife. Up the coast in Haifa, a model of Jewish-Arab coexistence,
the incredible Baha’i Gardens adorn the slopes of Mount Carmel.
Whether you’re coming for a weekend or a week, our Top 10 guide
brings together the best of everything that Israel and Petra have
to offer, from the mineral-rich waters of the Dead Sea and the
ancient synagogues of the Sea of Galilee to the incredible ruined
Nabataean city of Petra. The guide has useful tips throughout, from
seeking out what’s free to avoiding the crowds, plus eight easy-to-
follow itineraries, designed to tie together a clutch of sights in a
short space of time. Add inspiring photography and detailed maps,
and you’ve got the essential pocket-sized travel companion. Enjoy
the book, and enjoy Israel and Petra.

Church of the
Holy Sepulchre

Venerated as the site of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, this
is, for many, the holiest venue in Christendom. The first church was
built here for Emperor Constantine in AD 326. Destroyed in AD 614 by
the Persians and by the Fatimid Sultan Hakim in 1009, it was rebuilt
by the Crusaders between 1114 and 1170. Having survived fire and
earthquake, it is now administered by six Christian denominations.

The focal point of Jerusalem for over 3,000 years, the Temple
Mount was the site of Solomon’s First Temple and its replacement,
the Second Temple. Rebuilt in the 1st century BC by Herod the
Great, the complex (from where Jesus is said to have expelled the
merchants and moneychangers) was destroyed by the Romans in
AD 70. The Mount remained derelict until the arrival of Islam in the
7th century, when the golden Dome of the Rock was
built and the Mount became known to Muslims as
Al-Haram ash-Sharif (the Noble Sanctuary).

Western Wall

Judaism’s holiest place of prayer, the Western Wall or HaKotel is
a huge retaining structure built by Herod the Great to hold up the
Temple Mount. It is about 1,600 ft (488 m) long, but only a small
section is used for prayers; most of the rest is hidden or is part
of an archeological park. From 1948 to 1967,
Jews were not allowed to pray at the Wall,
but since its dramatic capture by Israeli
paratroopers during the Six-Day War, it has
once again become a place of pilgrimage.

Bethlehem

According to the Hebrew Bible, Bethlehem was the birthplace of
the shepherd-boy David and the site of his coronation as the King
of Israel. It is, of course, most famous as the birthplace of Jesus.
In AD 326 Constantine the Great had a church built on the site, and
today the Church of the Nativity is Christendom’s oldest house of
prayer. Just 6 miles (10 km) south of Jerusalem, Bethlehem has
been under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority since 1995.
Once majority Christian, it is now about 75 percent Muslim.

Tel Aviv’s glorious Mediterranean seafront stretches for 8.5 miles
(14 km) from the cliffs of Herzliya to the ancient city of Jaffa. Broad
expanses of sand are complemented by parks, restaurants and
cafés, high-rise hotels, and a yacht harbor. Both locals and tourists
flock here to swim or windsurf, sunbathe or play matkot (see p50), sip
a cold beer or dine on schnitzel and fries, and, of course, see and be
seen. The entire beachfront is paralleled by a pedestrian promenade
and by part of the city’s 81-mile (130-km) bike-path network.

Masada

In AD 72–3 at the mountaintop fortress of Masada, 967 Jewish
rebels chose mass suicide over submission to Rome. Besieged
by Roman legions, the rebels held out for two years before defeat
became inevitable. Although there is evidence that a stronghold
existed here in the 2nd century BC, it was Herod the Great who
fortified the complex and added two palaces. The Romans took
Masada when Herod died, but it was recaptured by the rebels
during the First Jewish Revolt in AD 66. Since its rediscovery,
Masada has become a symbol of the modern State of Israel.

Known as the Kinneret in Hebrew, Israel’s largest freshwater lake

The Siq, Petra

The deep, narrow gorge known as the Siq provides a supremely
dramatic entrance to Petra. All but impervious to sunlight, it twists
imperceptibly downward, until suddenly it opens onto a bright
square. On the other side stands the Treasury in all its glory. Since
ancient times, the Siq has led traders and travelers into the heart
of this Nabataean world. Modern-day explorers start in the town of
Wadi Musa, from where a road leads through Bab al-Siq (“Gateway
to the Siq”), a valley flanked by sandstone cliffs. In the Siq itself,
the walls are pocked with votive niches, a prelude to the tombs
and sculptures carved out of Petra's rock faces by the Nabataeans.

TOP 10 SAFETY TIPS FOR
THE DEAD SEA
1 Sunburn
Wear sunblock but don’t stress out
about sunburn – thanks to the density
of the air, you’ll get much less solar
radiation than at sea level.
2 Dehydration
The extreme heat can cause
dehydration, and so can osmosis while
swimming, so drink plenty of water.
