Jerusalem

This ancient city is sacred to the three great monotheistic faiths.
Crammed with churches, mosques, synagogues, museums,
and archeological sites, the Old City has a
chaotic romance that takes the breath away.
Palestinian-majority East Jerusalem contains
fascinating sights and good nightlife, while the
Jewish city hosts excellent museums, markets,
and restaurants. Jerusalem’s 3,000-year
history has been turbulent, to say the least.
From 1949 to 1967, the city was divided along
the Green Line, with Jordan controlling the
east, including the Old City. The 1967 war saw
Israel take control of the entire city. The mix
of cultures and religions jostling against each

Tel Aviv-Jaffa

Founded in 1909 by 66 families, Tel Aviv (Hill
of the Spring) has come far in little over a
century. The modern face of Israel, the city is
a center for contemporary thought, cuisine,
nightlife, and culture. Designed as a garden
city in 1925, it is characterized by lovely parks,
palm trees, and wide boulevards. Countless
cafés and restaurant-bars line its streets, and
Greek image, Jaffa the Mediterranean beach adds to the atmosphere.
Visitor Centre From the 1930s to the 1950s, Jewish architects
fleeing Germany designed 4,000 Bauhaus buildings here, leading
UNESCO to declare the “White City” a World Heritage Site in 2003.

Galilee and the North

This is the greenest region of Israel,
with lush valleys and wooded hills.
Brimming with wild flowers in spring
and crisscrossed by hiking trails, it is
also a good place for horseback riding
and bird-watching. The sparkling Sea of
Galilee is a major draw, and Tiberias makes
Capital, Capernaum a good base for exploring sites central to
synagogue Jesus’ ministry. The region is steeped in
Jewish religious history too. The town of
Safed has winding streets and ancient synagogues, while the region’s
wealth of archeological sites – Caesarea, Beit She’an, and Tzipori
– is overwhelming. A visit to Akko is like stepping back in time, and
nearby Haifa is bright and bustling. The Golan Heights has spectac-
