Then again, this book is already in your hands.
It starts and ends on January 1, and I was thinking
of calling it The Year My Whole Life Changed. Or Life,
Death, and Kisses. Or maybe even The Year I Grew Up.
For me, being fourteen was hard. Really hard.
Childhood was a piece of cake. Being a kid in New
York City and spending summers in Spain, that was all
pretty perfect, looking back. But being fourteen was like
climbing a mountain in the rain. In flip-flops. I hoped
I’d wind up in a different place, but I kept tripping and
slipping and falling and wishing it weren’t way too late
to turn around.
This book does have funny parts. And I learned two
giant facts.
Number one: everything can change in an instant—
for worse, sure, but also for better. Number two:
sometimes, if you just keep climbing, you get an
amazing view. You see what’s behind you and what’s
ahead of you and—the big surprise—what’s inside you.

magine being head over heels in love with
someone, but not being able to touch
them. Or hold hands. Or even stand next
to them. That’s the grim reality explored
in the new film Five Feet Apart (out March
15), a heart-wrenching tale about two teens
battling cystic fibrosis. And for the film’s star,
IHaley Lu Richardson, 24, playing one of those
teens was no easy task.
“Something emotional or intense happens in
every scene because that’s just the kind of movie it
is,” says Haley Lu. “So I was crying every day.”
Five Feet Apart follows Stella Grant, a type-A
teen with cystic fibrosis (CF), an incurable, progres-
sive, genetic disease that leads to lung infections
and limits the ability to breathe over time. While
receiving treatment, Stella meets Will Newman
(Cole Sprouse), a charming fellow CF patient. The
two fall in love...but, because they both have CF,
they can’t come within six feet of each other.
If they do, they risk cross-infection.
While playing such a serious role
definitely had Haley Lu in her feelings,
that’s not to say there weren’t any fun
moments on set. “We were filming
this big scene for Will’s birthday and
we were all supposed to be laughing
harder than we ever have in our lives,”
Haley Lu reminisces. “But we were
so tired, so we just fake laughed
really loudly and obnoxiously until it
turned into real laughter. We were
so delirious, but it was all the more
fun because of that.”
During filming, Haley Lu met
Claire Wineland, the YouTuber, author and inspira-
tional speaker with CF who inspired the character
of Stella (along with other CFers). Although Claire
couldn’t visit the set because of health risks, she
did consult on the film and FaceTime with the cast Haley Lu
to offer real-life insights, which helped Haley Lu, in
particular, relate better to the experience of living
with the disease. Richardson
“We want people to not only connect to the
film but be more aware of CF,” Haley Lu explains.
“It was important to us that Claire gave her
thumbs up on everything.”
Unfortunately, last year, at 21, Claire suffered
a massive stroke a week after her lung transplant
surgery and passed away. FOR PHOTO CREDITS, SEE PAGE 84.
“One of the greatest gifts of my life so far was
being able to meet her,” Haley Lu says. “She’ll
always have a really special place in my heart.”

BY SYDNEY ADAMSON different. Why? Well, mainly because JoJo actually made it happen (just
minus the whole double persona thing).
It was in 2013—years after JoJo’s mom placed that first ribbon in
her hair—that JoJo and her bows made their way into popular culture
on Lifetime’s Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition.
JoJo didn’t win the top spot on the show, but she did go on to
star in two seasons of Dance Moms alongside Maddie and Mackenzie
Ziegler, Kalani Hilliker and Nia Sioux. And, thanks to that perky pony
and her bubbly personality, JoJo seriously stood out.
After leaving the show in 2016, she released her debut EP,
D.R.E.A.M. The Music, last fall. Her videos for her hits—like “Boomerang”
and “Hold the Drama”—have racked up more than 950 million views
on YouTube. And while JoJo’s focusing more on music these days
(she plays the piano and is learning how to play the drums, too), she
certainly hasn’t left TV behind.
She shines as Nick Cannon’s sidekick on Nickelodeon’s Lip Sync

This spring, you’ll find her in two more specials on Nick—one for her

anticipated D.R.E.A.M. The Tour (which kicks off May 17 in Arizona and

experience with her 9 million YouTube subscribers. “I’m so excited to

epic. Every single show is going to be the best night of my life,” she
gushes. “I have so many surprises in store for everyone—like, millions.

the things. Basically, this is my dream come true.”

YOUR BIG BREAK
If you’re feeling grimy (hey, it happens!), hop
in the shower to prep with a super quick
rinse. OK, ready? We suggest blocking out
a full 40 minutes (or even an hour) to make
your bath a truly relaxing experience from
start to finish. According to dermatologist
Dr. Tsippora Shainhouse, your time in the
tub should range from 10 minutes (if you
have skin conditions like eczema) to 20
minutes (if your epidermis is pretty average).
But blocking out a bigger chunk of time will
allow you to prep right and chill out for a bit
after you’ve warmed up. (More on that later.)

ALL ABOUT THE ATMOSPHERE
“Creating the right space for a bath is
totally essential,” says Aarti Gala, founder
of skincare brand Jiya Beauty. “I try to clear
off the counters and bath shelves [even if it
means just temporarily putting things away],
dim the lights and light a candle or two.” We
also like writing an intention on your mirror
in a dry erase marker (or lipstick!) to get your
mind in a positive place.
THE RIGHT RECIPE
Is it weird that the elements that make your
dinner taste better are key to boosting your
bain? Kinda, but that doesn’t make it less
true. A scoop of salt will help your muscles
relax, but you need to balance it out with
an oil. “Definitely add a moisturizing com-
ponent to the bath, as hot water and salt
alone can be drying and dehydrating,” Gala
tells us. “Even just a dash of coconut oil or
grapeseed oil will help.”

IN HOT WATER
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: A
steamy bath feels amazing, but can be way
too harsh on your skin. “Hot water strips
the natural oils on your skin that protect
you from damaging weather and environ-
mental irritants,” says Dr. Shainhouse. She
recommends sticking to warm temps, then
applying a lotion within three minutes of
making your exit.

MINDFUL

BY KELSEY HAYWOOD LUCAS

hat’s your most unforgettable
period memory? Maybe it was
the shock you experienced
when you unexpectedly got it
Wfor the very first time. Or when
a tampon got stuck. Or when you wore
white pants on the worst day ever to
wear white pants.
Mine is the exact pattern of the cracks
on the wall of the nurse’s office at my
school. It was a place I’d lie for hours,
month after month like clockwork, in
agonizing pain. I’d stare at the mint
green-painted bricks while I curled up into
a ball on the cot—gripping my stomach,
cursing the day I first became a woman.
When I returned to class and got asked
why I was out for so long (again), I should
have said, “Oh, I just suffer from a severe
menstrual cycle that causes cramping,
nausea, dizziness and sharp pains. It’s
actually quite common.”
But I didn’t. Because girls weren’t
talking about periods like that—and girls
*still* really aren’t talking about periods
like that. But we’re getting better at it.
For a long time, periods have been
taboo—something to be ashamed about.
Girls have been taught to keep their flow
a big secret (raise your hand if you’ve ever
slipped off to the bathroom at school
after stashing a tampon up your sleeve...
or passed a pad to a friend with all the
stealth of a covert spy operation).
But now, the crimson tide is turning:
Girls are talking openly and honestly
about period empowerment (check out
hashtags like #menstruationmatters and
#periodpositivity on Instagram). They’re
