Life comes a full circle.

Last year, around the same time, we were
bidding an emotional adieu to our Editor,

REDEFINING TRADITION

Reviving the traditional artform of Pichwais

FEATURE SEEMA SREEDHARAN

I n his recent exhibiton titled

Srinathji Swaroopam,
artist Jai Khanna gave a
contemporary revival to the ancient

art of Pichwais. While the art
form is traditional, the language
—whether it’s the motifs or the
colour palette — is undeniably
contemporary.
Showcasing 30 contemporary
works on silk and paper, for the
first time, this traditional form

of art has been redefined within
an urban milieu, their simplistic
narrative reinforced with his
personal vision.
“My fascination with Pichwais
began when I was a child, in third
standard if I’m not mistaken,”

reminisces the artist. “I didn’t know
about Pichwais back then. When I
was asked to draw, I drew a sketch
of Lord Krishna, without knowing
anything about him. I think it was
providence. The fascination, or
rather obsession never faded.”

I have looked at every

traditional piece through a

Genius

IN A NUTSHELL

While he remains true to the
iconographical representation,
Jai infuses the art form with
contemporary imagery, hitherto

unseen. “Most of my pichwais
are actually inspired by my
dreams,” says Jai revealing the
deep spirituality that he associates
with the process. The subjects are
traditional but the way they are
approached and conceptualised

is absolutely personal and unique.
The artist fuses the traditional with
the modern, for instance, he merges
the traditional patterns of verdant
forests with newer motifs inspired
by the havelis of Nathdwara, to
create his own signature style of
Pichwais. “I have looked at every

traditional piece through a modern

ABOUT PICHWAIS

The word Pichwai has its roots
in Sanskrit: pich or ‘behind’,
vai or ‘textile hanging.’ A
traditional art form practiced

in Nathdwara, Rajasthan,
the Pichwai is an intricate
painting that depicts theatrical
scenes from Lord Krishna’s
life, typically hung behind

elaborate textile hangings

originally designed to create a
devotional atmosphere for the
daily ‘shringaar’ — the special
adornment of the deity.

by Baarique is not just hand

but also has a story behind

every piece is unique. The
variation of texture on the

to the charm of the product.

“Over the last 10 years, the
concept of luxury has moved
away from established brands

less interested in “collecting

own pieces which are unique,”
explains Ambrita Shahani-

collaboration between Ambrita

incorporated flowers from the

SCANDINAVIAN ESCAPE

In the popular age of minimal decor, comes this black
and white trend, heavily influenced by the Nordic
construction. A play with rough edges and fine lines
gives rise to this simple approach. Make this style your
own, with delicate additions. Add a tall black-bordered
mirror to create a statement. A dark green plant can
create a subdued pop in this monochrome setting.
