Surrounded by 20 acres of pine

is designed by architect Varrun
Motihar of Mova1. Hidden away
from the main city of Mussorie,
the tented resort celebrates
organic and natural materials, in
exacting ways. It’s simple design,
boasts of detailing, which is the
underlined luxury here. The high
altitude meant that resources
were limited. So, Varrun rationed
and championed locally-available
materials. The heavy palette of
hard wood pine, walnut, metal,
stone, leather, jute and cotton,
perfect the au naturel look of this
retreat. The design sensibility can
easily be described as luxuriously
minimal.

Normally, Asim is a man on a mission,
but with this home, he did things
differently. “I did not want to follow
any rules or set limits, but wanted to
experiment with colours, materials,
fabrics, etc. I wove colours together,
mixed them in unusual ways, and
offset them with my collection of

REAL HOME
I
t would be all too easy to peg
Asim Merchant as the original
woodsman of the Indian design
scene, and rightly so! His wood-
centric furniture designs have won
several awards and remain etched
in our memory for their distinct
form, and contextual design. And this ongoing
affair, with this natural material, has found a
worthy canvas...his weekend home in Madh
Island — a quaint piece of land, cut off from
the hustle and bustle of Mumbai’s chaos. It is
here that one actually understands just how
exacting Asim’s love for wood is.
In this double storied home, wood is the
key highlight — from the flooring, the ceiling,
the furniture surfaces, the stairway, he has
mastered the narrative.
We find the designer cosied up with Snowy
(a beautiful Persian cat), on the sky blue sofa
that he custom built. “I love using wood in its
natural form, its just so beautiful and tactile!
Wood is a very important element in all my
designs as it brings in a very warm and rustic
feeling. I love wooden surfaces, staircases,
floorings etc. In this home I have left the
wood largely raw with just a coat of wax so that
the natural grains and structure of the wood
are exposed.”
Asim wanted the house to be colourful, so,
in keeping with that mandate, every accessory
and furnishings, literally everything, is
colourful. By dousing the surfaces in an ochre/
almost turmeric colour tone, Asim orchestrates
a narrative where every piece of wood shines,
making this quite the warm shell, but with a
vibrant personality. White is used wherever
possible, as a highlight (as seen on the curtains
and kitchen accessories), and also to allow the
amazing profusion of natural light here, to
bounce around the interiors.
For the designer, this house needed to feel
like a holiday home and inspire creativity. So
the main inspiration was a focus on colours,
warmth, open spaces and creativity. The result:
A fun, functional and tranquil home!

the pre-constructed structure could be modified
only to a certain extent in convergence with the
design intervention. Most of the pre-installed
appliances, switches, water taps and faucets, etc.
were retained to minimise costs and lower the

Given this rigid ecosystem, Amit and his team
focused on the treatment of the walls, services,

clever arsenal of colours and materiality. And

for instance, the sensuality of the red-leather
upholstered sofas, juxtaposed with the cool, earthy
vibes of the blue sofa, radiates a cool-warm vibe

through the home. Going beyond these finishing

upon to achieve symmetry and a clutter-free
space. Eventually, it enabled a defined movement.

The subtle-yet-elegant design narrative is

contemporary silhouettes of furniture
complete the design narrative.

an interesting play of form, function and
materials in the detailing, space planning and
textures in just the right proportion.
The home’s crowning glory is the main
public space, with the living room, dining
room and kitchen put together. From the
entrance foyer, this entire area is just partially
visible through black wooden slats over a
glass window. The dark grey open kitchen,
with the dining table abutting it, is perfect for
entertaining and interacting with the family.
A wall library, crafted from fabricated metal
with vertical divisions, subtly divides this zone
from the living room. Dark to light grey wall
finishes tie this whole zone together into an
uber-luxurious package.
The three bedrooms all hold their own;
with the master completely embracing its
panoramic view of the sea with a bespoke
bed, and glass wardrobe and closet; the
son’s bedroom taking the geometrical route
with a boxed sleeping enclosure, and the
grandparent’s room exuding simplicity. In
balancing the functional with the aesthetic,
the design team has managed to give the
home its very own vibe.
To add the illusion of space, Rahul and his team dramatised the
living room with polished Italian marble flooring in four different
styles. Magnetic track lighting on the ceiling aids the attempt at
spaciousness as well.
