62 | ‘Tis The Season The search for the perfect gift tends to be easier when shoppers are aware of the latest trends. No current gifting trend is more popular than giving experiences rather than a tangible gift. According to a 2022 survey from the travel booking platform GetYourGuide, 77 percent of individuals surveyed indicated they would rather receive experiences than physical gifts during the holiday season. Travel experiences are the most sought-after experiential gifts: 63 percent of individuals surveyed indicated surprise travel is the experience they would most enjoy receiving. However, a trip to parts unknown is not the only experience shoppers can give, nor is it the only one friends and family would love to receive. The GetYourGuide survey found that tickets to a concert or show (50 percent); outdoor activities, such as skiing, boating or hiking (43 percent); and a food tour or cooking class (36 percent) also made for desirable experiential gifts. 74 | ‘Tis The Season Come December, the holiday season has hit full swing. Celebrants of various faiths and backgrounds participate in holiday celebrations, which are unique to each faith. Although Chanukah is a relatively minor holiday on the Jewish religious calendar, it has enjoyed a greater share of fanfare in recent years. That popularity is perhaps due to the proximity of Chanukah to another major December celebration featuring a bearded fellow in a red suit. Traditions associated with Chanukah celebrations Continued on page 76 Chanukah isn’t mandated by the Torah, and isn’t even mentioned in the Hebrew Bible although it was created by rabbis centuries ago. Judaism is one of the world’s oldest and most influential religions. World Population Review estimates there were approximately 15.2 million Jews worldwide in 2021. Chanukah begins on the 25th day of Kislev each year. In 2023, Chanukah begins at sundown on December 7 and ends on the evening of Friday, December 15. Here are some Chanukah traditions to explore. 76 | ‘Tis The Season Lighting the menorah Participants light a special nine-pronged menorah, sometimes called a hanukkiah. One candle per night is lit to recall the miracle of the sacred lamp oil that lasted for eight days during the rededication of the Temple. The ninth candle (shammash) is used to light the others. Lighting the menorah has been a primary ritual for at least 1,800 years. Lit menorahs are placed in prominent locations, including front windows in homes. Spinning the dreidel There are various stories about the origins of the dreidel, but historians say the first written mention of a dreidel did not occur until the 18th century. The four sides of the dreidel are marked with different letters, which in German are G “ganz” (all), H “halb” (half), N “nischt” (nothing) and S “schict” (put). 78 | ‘Tis The Season spin will determine whether the player who spun the dreidel gets all, half, or nothing in the collective coin pot, or has to put in his own. Yiddish is quite similar to German, and the letters on the dreidel also correspond to the first letters of the Yiddish phrase “nes gadol haya sham,” which translates to “a great miracle happened here,” a reference to the Chanukah miracle. Fried dishes Eating dishes cooked in oil is another commemoration of the miracle of the oil. Potato pancakes called latkes and jelly doughnuts are often served during Chanukah celebrations. Giving gelt and gifts Gelt was the gift of coin that would be given out to independent workers come Chanukah as an end-of-year gratuity. Later it became a way to offer small tokens to children. Today’s gelt is typically discs of chocolate wrapped in foil to resemble coins.

92 | ‘Tis The Season Historic levels of inflation did not deter shoppers from spending during the 2022 holiday shopping season. Inflation has contributed to a cost-of-living increase that has forced consumers to cut back in many areas. Despite that, a 2023 report from GlobalData found that consumer holiday-related spending in 2022 rose by 6.7 percent compared to the year prior. A survey of more than 55,000 consumers found Thanksgiving was an especially busy day for shoppers, as consumers spent 8.4 percent more money on the day in 2022 than they did in 2021. The increase in spending was good news for retailers, though it was marked by an odd curiosity. Holiday shoppers spent more in 2022 than they did in 2021, but that spending involved shopping for fewer people. The GlobalData report indicated that the average shopper bought gifts for about four people in 2022, which was down from about six people in 2021. Student card funds Colleges utilize different programs for paying for meal plans and incidentals purchased on campus. One program links money to a proprietary card that functions like a debit or credit card. Family and friends can deposit directly into these card accounts. Savvy gift givers also can deposit funds into students’ bank accounts for a little extra spending money to put toward books or that mocha latte at the campus coffee shop. Parking pass Although freshmen may be restricted from bringing cars to campus unless they are commuter students, sophomores and upperclassmen may be able to park in campus lots. Parking typically is an extra cost for students, so family and friends can gift the cost of annual parking passes to the college students in their lives.

98 | ‘Tis The Season Dorm gear College students who opt to live in campus housing often want to make their dorm rooms a home away from home. They will need to outfit these tight quarters with items that won’t take up too much space. Small pod-type coffee pots, compact microwaves, mini fridges, under-bed storage shelving, area rugs, cozy comforters, and bathroom essentials can make college kids’ dorm rooms feel more like home. Laptop or tablet Gone are the days when students primarily used pen and paper for school assignments. Students starting as early as elementary school use tablets and other digital devices to complete assignments and take notes. Paperless communication continues throughout students’ college career. Many assignments are posted online and then completed and submitted through various portals or cloud services. So, college students will need a lap top or highfunctioning tablet with the right processing speed to handle the demand. Event tickets Not every moment should be spent in classrooms or residence halls. College students love to venture away from campus, and what better way to enjoy the sights and offerings than by attending various event off-campus? Gift-givers can offer tickets to art shows, music festivals, comedy club nights, amusement parks, or other events in college towns. Travel assistance Attending college far from home means that students will take planes, trains, or automobiles to return home for holidays and other special events. Gifting college students airline or train fare, or providing gift cards for gas station fill-ups, means students will be able to afford trips home when needed.
