106 | ‘Tis The Season Age-based guidelines for buying toys and gifts Every holiday season parents make holiday gift lists, checking them often to be sure that they have found the perfect gift. Age-appropriate gifts can be a challenge since needs and interests vary according to age. Be sure to research gifts for children before buying to minimize safety risks. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that an estimated 86,000 children younger than five are treated for toy-related injuries each year. Toy-related injuries are preventable, and prevention often comes down to choosing age-appropriate toys for kids. Choking is the fourth-leading cause of unintentional death in children under the age of five reports the Emergency Center. Kids are curious and often put items in their mouths, so always check the age-appropriate range on the toy packaging especially if there are small parts and assembly is required. This will help prevent young children from choking hazards. Falls, eye injuries, drowning, and motor accidents are other leading causes of gift-related injuries. ‘Tis The Season | 107 Here’s how to select age-appropriate gifts. • Read the packaging carefully. Most toys and other children’s products will come with an age range recommendation. While some kids may be mature beyond their years, it’s best to choose gifts that fall within the recommended range. This is particularly the case for infants, toddlers, and any child under the age of five. • Avoid fad gifts. Children often want the latest and great- est gadgets and toys, not caring about safety. Resist the urge to buy something just to be the “cool parent or grandparent,” especially if the gift isn’t age-appropriate. For example, mermaid tails became popular in recent years, and likely will see increased presence thanks to the home-viewing release of a popular live-action mermaid movie. However, they limit movement and can make swimming more difficult, potentially increasing risk of drowning. • Provide safety gear. As children grow, they may be more interested in gifts that appeal to hobbies and abilities. Scooters, bicycles, skates, and other items are popular among older children. Buy these gifts to match proven ability, and even then, accessorize with the appropriate safety gear, such as helmets knee pads, and eye protection. • Wait before gifting certain electronics. Although children may be able to use devices safely many adults advocate for waiting to give young children smartphones and tablets because of worry about excessive screen time. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry says children ages two to five should limit non-educational screen time to about one hour per weekday and three hours on weekend days. Encourage children to pursue healthy habits that limit screen time, and buy gifts that support these activities. Age-appropriate gifts ensure safety for the youngest people on holiday gift lists. One beautiful tradition that adds to the festive spirit is the sending of holiday cards. In an age of digital communication and instant messaging, the art of sending cards in the mail may seem old-fashioned, but it remains a cherished and meaningful practice for a reason. Katy Ackerman, owner of local stationery store Lewes Lettering Co., shares some reasons to keep this tradition going and spread the holiday cheer. )

As you send these thoughtful greetings, you're not just maintaining professional ties; you're also spreading the holiday spirit and goodwill. ‘Tis The Season | 113 A Quick Guide to Dairy Substitutes In baking, plant-based milks, such as almond, soy, or oat milk, can directly replace cow's milk. Coconut milk is excellent for creating creamy sauces or soups, and dairy-free yogurts can be used in place of regular yogurt. In place of butter, margarine or oils can often be used, but remember to adjust for salt if the original recipe called for salted butter. Dairy-free cheese substitutes are widely available, and nutritional yeast can add a cheesy flavor to dishes. Re-imagining Classic Holiday Dishes Let's look at how some traditional holiday dishes can be made dairy-free. Green Bean Casserole: A classic at many holiday tables, green bean casserole is traditionally made with cream of mushroom soup, which contains dairy. To make it dairy-free, make a homemade mushroom sauce using unsweetened almond milk and flour to thicken. Mashed Potatoes: Creamy mashed potatoes are a holiday must-have. For a dairy-free version, use a high-starch potato like a Russet and mash with chicken or vegetable broth and olive oil for a creamy, flavorful side dish. Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes: This comforting side dish can be made dairyfree by using a rich, creamy sauce made from nutritional yeast, almond milk, and vegetable broth. The result is a cheesy, creamy dish without any dairy. Hot Chocolate: A warm mug of hot chocolate is a holiday favorite. For a dairyfree version, heat almond, soy, or oat milk on the stove, and mix in dairy-free dark chocolate until melted. Top with a marshmallow or whipped coconut cream for an indulgent treat. Holiday Biscuits: Many traditional biscuit recipes include butter and milk. For a dairy-free version, use a plant-based milk and a dairy-free butter substitute. Pumpkin Pie: A staple dessert of the holiday season, pumpkin pie can easily be made dairy-free. Substitute the evaporated milk with full-fat coconut milk and use a dairyfree pie crust. 116 | ‘Tis The Season Gifts from the Kitchen Creating Homemade Food Gifts for the Holidays There's something truly special about homemade holiday gifts. They convey a personal touch that store-bought items can't match. For those who enjoy cooking and baking, crafting homemade food gifts can be a joyous part of the holiday season. Sweet Treats Candies and cookies are traditional homemade food gifts. Fudge, peppermint bark and truffles can be packaged in festive tins. Cookies, from gingerbread to shortbread, are always a hit. Consider including a recipe card so recipients can recreate their favorites. Savory Surprises Not everyone has a sweet tooth. For those who prefer savory treats, consider homemade seasoned nuts, marinated olives, or a jar of your signature salsa or barbecue sauce. Gourmet Mixes For a gift with a longer shelf-life, consider assembling dry gourmet mixes. Layer the ingredients for a soup, hot chocolate or cookie mix in a glass jar. Attach a label with instructions on how to complete the recipe. Preserves and Pickles If you've preserved fruits or vegetables, the holiday season is a great time to share your bounty. Jars of homemade jams, jellies, pickles or chutneys make for flavorful gifts that can be enjoyed long after the holiday season has passed. Baked Goods Freshly baked breads or pastries can be a welcome gift. Consider a loaf of banana or zucchini bread, a batch of muffins, or a breakfast pastry like a coffee cake. Remember these gifts need to be consumed quickly, so time your delivery appropriately. Glass jars, festive tins, cellophane bags tied with ribbon, or holiday-themed boxes can all add to the appeal of your gift. Remember to attach a label or tag identifying what's inside. If the item has a short shelflife, it's helpful to include that information as well. If the recipient has dietary restrictions, make sure to note any relevant details, such as if the item is gluten-free or dairy-free. 122 | ‘Tis The Season Pumpkin Spice & Everything Nice The Science Behind Our Holiday Flavor Obsession From lattes to candles, the scent and flavor of pumpkin spice has become synonymous with the holiday season. But what makes this spice blend so appealing? It turns out there's some science behind our obsession. The Anatomy of Pumpkin Spice Pumpkin spice doesn't actually contain any pumpkin. Instead, it's a blend of spices commonly used in pumpkin pie, including cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves and allspice. These spices combine to create a warming, aromatic blend. Comfort and Nostalgia From a psychological perspective, the appeal of pumpkin spice often comes from its connection to happy memories and traditions, like holiday meals and celebrations. Our brains make strong connections between scents, flavors and experiences, and this association can evoke a sense of nostalgia when we encounter these smells and tastes again. A Sensory Experience From a physiological standpoint, the aromatic compounds in pumpkin spice have a significant impact on our senses. Cinnamon contains cinnamaldehyde, which gives it a sweet, aromatic scent and a warming sensation on the tongue. Nutmeg has a compound called myristicin, which contributes to its sweet and slightly woody flavor. Ginger contains gingerol, which provides its distinctive spicy kick. The combination of these sensations—sweet, spicy, warm—triggers a positive response in our brains. It's a flavor profile that hits all the right notes, which is why it's so pleasing to our palates. Limited Availability There's also the matter of supply and demand. Pumpkin spice flavored items are typically only available for a limited time each year, which can create a sense of urgency and anticipation. This limited availability can make these items seem more special and desirable. Pumpkin Spice Beyond the Latte While the pumpkin spice latte may be the most well-known application of this flavor blend, it's far from the only one. Pumpkin spice can be used in a variety of sweet and savory dishes, from breakfast foods like oatmeal and pancakes, to desserts like cookies and cakes, and even in savory dishes like soups and stews. Our love for pumpkin spice goes beyond a simple flavor preference. It's a combination of physiological responses, psychological connections and clever marketing. So, the next time you enjoy a pumpkin spice treat, you'll know there's a bit of science behind every delicious bite. 25 Baltimore Avenue | Rehoboth Beach, DE (302) 227-8331 | www.woodenindianltd.com Elegant gifts and home accessories for over 40 years a a

124 | ‘Tis The Season 4 Unique Holiday Party Themes The holiday season is a festive time of year filled with plenty of opportunities to socialize with friends and family. Parties abound this time of year, and many people may find themselves hosting everything from intimate gatherings to large family dinners. As people will be attending many different events in the weeks to come, savvy hosts and hostesses may want to set their occasions apart in different ways. One option is to pick an entertaining party theme that guests can get excited about. A fun theme can provide a break from the standard traditions. Consider these four unique party themes when planning holiday parties. 1. Ornament exchange Who couldn’t use a new trinket for the mantle or to adorn the tree? Ask guests to bring a gift-wrapped ornament to the party. Then place numbers in a bowl and have each guest draw a number; this is the order in which they will then select an ornament. After the first person makes their selection, subsequent guests can choose a new ornament from the pile or “steal” one from those Nov. 24th-Dec. 31st Featuring 3 Can’t-Miss Experiences Crooked Hammock Way, Lewes DE CrookedHammockBrewery.com New Year’s Eve Par December 31st Let It Snow Campfire Experience Every Friday-Sunday during Holidays at the Hammock Breakfast with Santa! Tropical holiday The weather outside may be frightful, but a tropical island party can be utterly delightful. Give the event an island flair with fruity drinks, grilled kabobs, coconut desserts, and steel-drum music. 3. Grinchy party A party devoted to the Dr. Seuss character The Grinch can be a fun way to pass time together. While the holidays are supposed to be holly and jolly, a Grinch-themed party can put the emphasis on being a little bit naughty. And who doesn’t enjoy an ample serving of roast beast? Have guests come decked out in Grinch costumes or Grinch emblazoned t-shirts or other clothing. 4. Christmas karaoke Set up the karaoke machine or utilize one of the services available online, and make sure that guests are prepared to belt out their favorite holiday tunes — whether traditional carols or pop hits. Chances are serving some liquid courage will help guests loosen up and be more inclined to grab the microphone.
