6 | HOME+GARDEN Tips for Budget-friendly Home Decor I nvesting in new home decor is another way to breathe new life into spaces and this approach that falls somewhere in the middle in regard to cost. Material and product costs remain high across the board, so homeowners interested in changing the furniture and other design elements in their homes might be seeking ways to do so in the most affordable way possible. Replace the accessories. Replacing curtains, area rugs, picture frames, throw pillows and chair cushions is an easy way to change a room without a big investment. Consider updating some wall art and tying color schemes together with all of the newly introduced elements. Rooms featuring neutral colors and minimal clutter tend to appear large and modern. Create an illusion. Light, bright and white are key attributes to remember when selecting design elements for rooms where you want to create the illusion of more square footage. Painting the walls in light colors, increasing natural and artificial light, including using mirrors to reflect light and decorating with light-colored fabrics can help a space seem more roomy. Splurge on statement pieces. Pieces include chandeliers, unique rugs or an eye-catching piece of furniture. Shop ‘discount’ stores. Traditional design centers can be great places to find plenty of high-quality merchandise. However, don’t overlook local discount or close-out centers that may have items at very reasonable costs. Stores like Home Goods, At Home and Big Lots routinely get new merchandise that changes with the season, helping homeowners to refresh their spaces without having to dig deep into their pockets. Shop the high-end stores for inspiration, then try to find “dupes” in the discount stores that will mimic the looks for less. Cut out the clutter. Modern homes are lean and clean. A home’s interior instantly looks more high-end and appealing when the clutter is removed. Consider keeping main living areas free from too many knickknacks and other accents. D

8 | HOME+GARDEN Popular Trends in Home Exteriors Trends come and go, but recognizing the current fashions can help homeowners create that highly sought-after wow factor. The following are some recent trends in home exteriors that create a distinct look. Wood Natural wood has undeniable appeal that interior decorators are rediscovering enthusiastically. For example, natural wood garage doors create a sense of warmth and can set a home apart from others with steel doors, which tend to be the most popular garage door material. In addition to the garage door, natural wood entry doors and wood decks are popular ways to impart this classical, warm look to a home’s exterior. Outdoor living spaces are one trend that figures to remain sought-after for years to come. Painted brick Like natural wood, brick is a traditional material that’s both sturdy and classical. But homeowners can add character to brick with a coat of paint, which has become a popular trend in recent years. Light tones are chosen most frequently when painting bricks. The experts at Better Homes & Gardens note that this could prove a long-term commitment if homeowners so desire, as a properly painted brick exterior could last as long as 20 years. Hardscaping Hardscaping isn’t new, but it has been trending in recent years. Hardscaping is an umbrella term that includes everything from outdoor living rooms to incorporating natural stone, like fireplaces or pizza ovens, into a landscape. Outdoor living rooms are one hardscaping trend that has become increasingly popular. These spaces serve as an extension of indoor living spaces. The home improvement experts at HGTV note that recently homeowners have looked to create covered outdoor rooms that can be enjoyed more frequently than patios or decks that are not protected from the elements. Outdoor lighting It makes perfect sense that people are looking to spend more time enjoying their properties outdoors would want more lighting outside. Ambient outdoor lighting can be used throughout a property, on walkways, driveways and to light up landscaping features like trees and backyard gardens. D

10 | HOME+GARDEN Transform Your Home Into a Haunted House Many transformations occur during the month of October. Leaves begin to turn various shades of orange and red, while the weather gets decidedly cooler. In the meantime, neighborhoods across the country begin to look quite different, with many homes decked out in the garish garb of Halloween. The National Retail Federation, together with Prosper Insights & Analytics, reports that decorating one’s home for Halloween is the second most popular way to celebrate the holiday. Only purchasing and sharing candy beats out home decor. People spend billions on Halloween each year by transforming a regular, unassuming home into a haunted house. Certain elements turn a an otherwise typical home into a suddenly spooky abode. Scene setter Start with a scene setter if you would like to decorate both inside and out. Scene setters are plastic or paper backdrops that can be tacked up on walls to make a house look completely different, particularly under low light. A scene setter is an investment of time and money, but it can be reused each year and really makes a house take on a new look quickly. Lawn graveyard Visitors who have to step through a graveyard to get to the house will know that there are more scares ahead. It’s relatively easy to make your own gravestones from wood or foam. If you’re not handy, you can purchase them from a Halloween supply store. Disturb the earth by the gravestones to make visitors believe each grave is fresh. A bony hand sticking out of the dirt or some wilted flowers placed by the graves also can set the scene. Floating candles Simulate the look of levitating candles with an easy craft. Take toilet paper or paper towel cardboard tubes and use hot glue on the top to make it look like beads of dripping wax. Paint the tubes with white chalk paint, which is thick and covers easily. Glue a battery-powered tea light to the top for the wick. Poke a hole through both sides of the tube and thread some fishing line through. Use your mounting device of choice to attach the fishing line to the ceiling indoors or outside to hang each candle. When the lights are dim, it’s very difficult to see the fishing line and the candles will appear to be floating. Haunted archway Make an arch using PVC pipes, and thread jack-o’-lanterns or papier mâche heads or masks through to create an ominous arch that greets visitors. Handprints Use window-safe paint to create bloody handprints on the inside of windows, a design touch that shows us the inside and out. Fog machine Use a fog machine to spread a creepy mist where you need it, whether on a front porch or indoors. D Haunted houses come together with design touches that are easy to execute. 14 | HOME+GARDEN Keeping Kids Safe at Home One of the surprises new parents often face is how much trouble their children can get into both inside and outside a home — particularly as they become mobile. Early lessons pertain to feeding, sleeping and bathing schedules. Around house Cushioned padding can be put on furniture edges. Heavy furniture can be bolted to the wall to avoid tip-over accidents. Use gates to block access to staircases or other off-limits spaces. Special door handle products can make it challenging for little fingers to get into rooms. Cabinet and toilet seat locks also can restrict access. Block all open outlets with outlet covers or safety plugs Bathing The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates more children ages one to four die from drowning than from any other cause. Never leave a child unattended around water. There are also special thermometers that can be used to indicate if the water has reached a safe temperature. Feeding While parents may want to dive right into offering solid foods, choking is an inherent danger. Most pediatricians urge avoiding foods that can block airways until Parents need to keep safety precautions in mind as their children grow up. a child reaches age four. Such foods include hot dogs, popcorn, whole grapes, and nuts. Safe finger foods include soft items that are easily swallowed, and O-shaped cereals Nursery It can be tempting to accept used baby items from other people in an effort to save money. Some of these items, especially cribs and car seats may no longer meet current safety guidelines. The Consumer Product Safety Commission advises that there should be no more than a 2 3⁄8-inch gap between crib slats (about the width of a soda can). Cribs should be placed away from drapes or window covering cords and have a firm mattress with a well-fitted sheet. Pillows, bumper pads and comforters can be hazardous in a crib. 18 | HOME+GARDEN Facts About Insulation and Home Efficiency I nsulation can go a long way toward making a home more comfortable. Insulation reduces the transfer of heat from indoors and outdoors so homes stay more comfortable in both the winter and summer. Insulation also can block exterior noise. A properly insulated home is a must, particularly in the wake of rising energy costs. Insulation is made from a variety of materials, including fiberglass, wool, cellulose, and spray foam. Unless damaged, insulation lasts for the life of the building. Some settling of insulation may occur, particularly with loose-fill Insulation is a key investment in home comfort and efficiency. type insulation and gaps can be filled in. During the Middle Ages, walls of homes were stuffed with straw and mud to help keep out the cold. It’s one of the first documented types of insulation. An insulating material’s resistance to heat flow is measured in terms of its thermal resistance, or R-value. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. An insulation contractor can let a homeowner know how much insulation and what R-value is recommended for his or her climate. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, insulation saves more than 600 times more energy each year than compact fluorescent lights, Energy Star Appliances, and Energy Star windows combined. For every Btu consumed in the production of insulation each year, 12 Btus are saved by the use of insulation, says A+ Insulation of Kansas City. Manufacturers continue to experiment with insulation materials. Environmentally friendly options include recycled cotton denim, paper or plant cellulose, and sheep’s wool. Large pieces of insulation are called batts. Traditionally they are made from pink fiberglass, which is extremely fine woven glass. It’s important to realize fiberglass insulation can release small particles or fibers in the air when disturbed, so respiratory protection and gloves should be used when handling to reduce risk of irritation. 20 | HOME+GARDEN The Most Likely Spots Where Mold Will Grow The Institute of Medicine reports there is sufficient evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with asthma symptoms, as well as hypersensitivity pneumonitis in certain individuals. Certain molds are toxigenic, meaning they can produce toxins, says the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Though there are very few reports of toxigenic molds found inside homes, when present, they can cause rare health conditions. The Environmental Protection Agency says there is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in an indoor environment. However, certain rooms and spaces warrant careful inspection since they are more vulnerable to mold growth. Mold spores take root in areas where there is ample moisture. Controlling moisture indoors is key to controlling mold. Kitchen Look under the sink and by the dishwasher for any leaks and areas susceptible to mold Ventilating cooking areas can help reduce moisture in the area as well, says the CDC. Basement A dehumidifier can be used in the basement to help reduce the moisture saturation in this space. Humidity levels in a home should be kept between 30 and 50 percent to help limit mold formation. Laundry area Clothes dryers are moisture-generating appliances that must be properly exhausted to the outdoors. Bathrooms Bathrooms generate a lot of moisture through showering and bathing. Bathrooms should be vented to the outdoors with an exhaust fan. If there is no fan, one should be installed. If that’s not possible, open a bathroom window to air out the room after bathing. Wipe down surfaces in the bathroom to dry them and keep mold at a minimum. Attic Mold often grows in cold, uninsulated exterior walls where building surfaces are relatively cold compared to the indoors. D Wipe down surfaces in the bathroom to keep mold at a minimum. 22 | HOME+GARDEN Signs of Winter Lawn Damage Homeowners cannot begin to repair winter lawn damage until they learn to identify it. Here are some telltale signs that winter took a harsh toll on a landscape. Wilted grass Many things can cause grass to wilt, so homeowners may have to put on their sleuth’s cap to determine why grass that was healthy is now wilted as the spring bloom begins. Grass that’s adjacent to walkways and driveways might have wilted due to the application of de-icing solutions. Such products can prevent the formation of ice on driveways and walkways. However, they’re often tracked onto the grass by Snowfall can contribute to winter lawn damage. people or animals or blown there by winter winds. A deep watering in spring can flush any lingering solution from the lawn. In future winters, homeowners can be as careful as possible when applying de-icing solutions, making a concerted effort to avoid spreading any onto the grass and limited applications to areas of the driveway and walkways that are not close to the grass. Brown patches The National Association of Landscape Professionals notes that brown patches in a lawn often develop after heavy snowfall. Such patches tend to develop where large piles of shoveled snow were deposited, so homeowners can inspect alongside driveways and walkways. The NALP advises homeowners to rake away part of the brown patches first. If green tissue is emerging beneath, then the lawn will likely be fine in due time. However, if the area beneath is not green and surrounding areas are already turning green, homeowners may need to rake up dead tissue before applying topsoil to the affected spots. Once topsoil is spread, some grass seed can be spread and the grass should regain its glory. Gray or pink grass Another indicator of winter lawn damage linked to snow is gray or pink grass. The NALP reports that this is a byproduct of snow mold caused by lingering snow. Action may be unnecessary, as the NALP notes these circular patterns often go away on their own. If not, raking the affected areas might be enough to get the lawn on the road to recovery. If the issue continues to linger after raking, a topsoil application and subsequent seeding may be necessary. D (302) 501-5222 WHICH WOULD YOU PREFER? HICH WOULD YOU PREFER? 24 | HOME+GARDEN How to Make Homes Safer From Fires Over a five-year period from 2015 to 2019, fire departments across the United States responded to roughly 347,000 home structure fires each year. That data, courtesy of the National Fire Protection Association, underscores the significance of home fire protection measures. Smoke detectors are a key component of fire protection, but there’s much more homeowners can do to protect themselves, their families, their belongings and their homes from structure fires. Hire an electrician. Electricians will inspect a home and identify any issues that could make the home more vulnerable to fires. Ask your electrician to look over every part of the house, including attics and crawl spaces. Oft-overlooked areas like attics and crawl spaces pose a potentially significant fire safety threat. Data from the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) indicates that 13 percent of electrical fires begin in attics and crawl spaces. Inspect smoke detectors. Smoke detectors can only alert residents to a fire if they’re working properly. Battery-powered Fire departments respond to hundreds of thousands of home fires each year. Continued on page 26

26 | HOME+GARDEN smoke detectors won’t work if the batteries die. Routine smoke detector check-ups can ensure the batteries still have juice and that the devices themselves are still functioning properly. Test alarms to make sure the devices are functioning and audible in nearby rooms. Install additional detectors as necessary so alarms and warnings can be heard in every room of the house. Audit the laundry room. The laundry room is another potential source of home structure fires. NFPA data indicates around three percent of home structure fires begin in laundry rooms each year. Strategies to reduce the risk of laundry room fires include leaving room for laundry to tumble in washers and dryers; routinely cleaning lint screens to avoid the buildup of dust, fiber and lint, which the NFPA notes are often the first items to ignite in fires linked to dryers; and ensuring the outlets washing machines and dryers are plugged into can handle the voltage such appliances require. It’s also a good idea to clean dryer exhaust vents and ducts every year. Look outward as well. Though the majority of home fires begin inside, the NFPA reports that 4 percent of such fires begin outside the home. Homeowners can reduce the risk of such fires by ensuring all items that use fire, including grills and firepits, are always used at least 10 feet away from the home. Never operate a grill beneath eaves, and do not use grills on decks. Never leave children unattended around firepits, as all it takes is a single mistake and a moment for a fire to become unwieldy. Sweat the small stuff. Hair dryers, hair straighteners, scented candles, clothes irons, and holiday decorations are some additional home fire safety hazards. Never leave candles burning in empty rooms and make sure beauty and grooming items like dryers, straighteners and irons are unplugged and placed in a safe place to cool down when not in use. Some simple strategies and preventive measures can greatly reduce the risk that a fire will overtake your home. D Clean dryer exhaust vents and ducts every year. 28 | HOME+GARDEN Kitchen Cabinets: Reface or Replace? According to highlights from the 2022 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, the median spend on major kitchen remodels grew by 14 percent from the previous year, and minor remodels increased by 25 percent. Spurred on by increased time spent at home during the pandemic, the main impetus for kitchen remodels according to the study was that homeowners wanted to make these improvements all along and finally had the time and means to do so. Replacement Cabinet replacement means removing all of the existing cabinets before new cabinets are leveled and installed. According to the home improvement resource The Spruce, homeowners can expect to pay between $13,000 and $30,000 for contractor grade cabinets. Cabinet replacement is a good idea when homeowners want to add more cabinet space or create a new layout in the room. Refacing Cabinet refacing is less messy and less disruptive than replacement. All cabinets remain in place. The cabinet boxes must be in good shape to facilitate a refacing. The process involves installation of new drawer fronts and cabinet doors, as well as veneering of the cabinet boxes. New hardware typically is installed as well. The insides of the cabinets typically remain the same. The Spruce says cabinet refacing can be 30 to 50 percent cheaper than a replacement. Most people call in professionals to replace or reface. Cabinet replacement can be a do-it-yourself job, but it involves measuring and ensuring everything fits and is leveled appropriately. Homeowners who choose to reface their cabinets themselves may opt to paint or restain. Wood veneer or a new door and drawer panel installation can be complicated and is best left to qualified contractors. D Homeowners can reface their cabinets themselves. Materials Interior doors are manufactured from an array of materials, some of which may be more effective at reducing noise than others. Wood, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), solid-core, hollow-core, and even metal and glass are some of the materials categories for interior doors. Homeowners can define what they prioritize with each door and then choose the material that aligns best with that goal. 36 | HOME+GARDEN Get Ahead of Chimney Repairs Cracks and spalling in brick chimneys are common concerns that can cause significant damage if left unchecked. Chimney maintenance involves more than cleaning the flue. Rather than running the risk of costly repairs, which can cost several thousand dollars, homeowners can take some simple steps to keep their chimneys in tip-top shape. Certain components of chimney maintenance are do-it-yourself tasks, while others may be better left to the professionals. Make sure the dampers are working properly. When using fireplaces and other appliances, dampers need to be open to allow smoke to vent outside; otherwise, smoke will be trapped in the home and could lead to carbon monoxide buildup. For those who do not like heights, leave chimney repairs to a pro. Dampers need to be fixed or replaced if they are not operational. Replacement fireplace dampers should be snug and not have any gaps. Check for any cracks or spalling. If enough of the material erodes, that erosion can adversely affect the structural integrity of the chimney. Some repairs can be made by patching up cracks or replacing missing bricks. Chimney tuckpointing is the process of repairing mortar. Waterproof the chimney. A water sealant applied to the outside of the chimney can prevent moisture from breaking down the masonry. Replace the chimney cap. A chimney cap is a contraption that sits atop the chimney to allow the smoke to vent while also preventing critters and water from going inside the flue, helping to extend the flue life. The chimney cap attaches to the flue liner, so measure the outside dimensions to ensure the cap is the right size for the chimney. Have the chimney swept. Sweeping helps remove the debris that clings to the inside of the flue, known as creosote. The amount of time the fireplace is used will determine how often the chimney must be cleaned. Generally, the chimney liner needs to be cleaned if it has 1⁄8-inch or more of soot. Regular maintenance can help keep a chimney working safely for decades. D Retire to the Culinary Coast! 40 | HOME+GARDEN When Should Floors be Replaced? Stunning floors are hard to miss, and floors that are well past their prime are equally noticeable. Fading floors may not need to be replaced immediately, but here are some signs indicating that existing floors are nearing their expiration date. Soft spots A floor that gives when stepped on could mean water damage caused by any number of factors. Some water damage is caused by mopping the floor with a soaking wet mop, while burst pipes also contribute to water damage that can cause soft spots. A single soft spot on the floor may necessitate a relatively simple repair, but various soft spots indicate extensive Homeowners can ensure that attention is drawn for all the right reasons. damage that might be affecting the floor, subflooring or both. In the latter instance, homeowners should consider a full floor replacement. Creaking floors Creaking floors are among the more annoying issues that can arise in a home. In such homes, residents feel as though every step they or their housemates take is being announced. In addition, creaking floors can awake light sleepers, including young children. The floor experts at Discount Flooring Depot note that uneven subfloor could be the culprit. Though that does not necessarily require a floor replacement, it can be hard to lift existing floors and then refit them after the subflooring has been addressed. That’s especially so if low-quality laminate flooring was installed. Creaking floors may not require a full floor replacement, it’s an outcome homeowners who can no longer live with the noise can prepare themselves for. Dated look Of course, some floors simply look like the product of a bygone era. Various factors, including location, affect the resale value of a home, but Realtor.com reports that hardwood floors are preferred by both home buyers and renters. In addition, Realtor.com estimates that wood floors could provide a return as high as 80 percent of the initial investment when homeowners sell their homes. If existing flooring looks dated, it might be time to bring it up to speed with something more modern. 42 | HOME+GARDEN Renovations that Make a Big Difference Crown molding can add a touch of elegance to any room. Home renovation projects were high on homeowners’ priority lists during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout much of 2020, people across the globe were forced to spend much of their time at home as leaders and governments across the globe sought to prevent the spread of COVID-19. More time at home compelled millions of homeowners to invest more in their properties, thus sparking a renovation boom. By early 2023, the renovation boom that marked the initial days of the pandemic appeared to have burst. In May 2023, the popular home improvement retailer Home Depot reported its sales had fallen by 4.5 percent in the first quarter of the year and that its income had fallen by more than 6 percent from the same period a year earlier. That marked the end of what Home Depot CEO Ted Decker characterized as “a threeyear period of unprecedented growth” in the home improvement sector. Home Depot’s decline in sales was attributed to a number of factors, including a pivot among homeowners from large Continued on page 44 Visit DELAWARE BOTANIC GARDENS AWARDED Best Attraction 2022 from Southern Delaware Tourism Open until mid-November Thursdays–Sundays 9 a.m.–4 p.m. 30220 Piney Neck Rd. 44 | HOME+GARDEN projects to smaller renovations. Inflation and the looming threat of a recession have led many homeowners to emphasize smaller projects. With that in mind, here are some small renovations that can have a big impact. Storage addition Regardless of where storage is added, the kitchen, home office or a laundry room, extra space to keep items out of view can dramatically alter the look of a home. Unused kitchen walls can be transformed with some inexpensive, easily hanged shelves, while some laundry pedestals with storage drawers can help keep washrooms clear of clutter. Polish floors Elbow grease might be the biggest expenditure when cleaning hardwood floors. The wood flooring experts at Bona® advise homeowners to polish their floors once every two to four months depending on how much foot traffic the floors get. A fresh polishing can make floors look brand new and ensures dirt and dust are not hanging around. Paint Painting is another inexpensive option for budget-conscious homeowners who want to update their homes. There’s no shortage of places in a home, both inside and out, where a fresh coat of paint can make a statement without breaking the bank. Fading paint on bedroom walls and kitchen cabinets can be painted over with a fresh coat of the same color or even something more vibrant. Outside, apply a fresh coat to a wooden deck or paint over brick siding to create a whole new look. Molding Crown molding can add a touch of elegance to any room. Rooms can be transformed in a single weekend with the installation of new or replacement crown molding. A simple molding installation is a task many do-it-yourselfers can handle on their own, while homeowners with less DIY experience may benefit from hiring a contractor to create a layered molding look. D Less expensive undertakings can transform spaces at a fraction of the cost.

46 | HOME+GARDEN Reasons to Replace Aging Windows Unless windows are showing signs of wear and tear or so dirty that it’s hard to see through them, it’s easy for them to go unnoticed. Replacement windows can add value to a home and even save homeowners a substantial amount of money. Much of the savings that can be attributed to new windows is related to energy efficiency. The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy estimates that as much as 30 percent of heating and cooling energy can be lost through heat gain or heat loss, and aging, inefficient windows contribute to such losses. There are three great reasons for homeowners to consider when thinking about upgrading their windows. New windows help reduce carbon footprint. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that replacing single-pane windows with ENERGY STAR® certified windows can help to reduce CO2 emissions by a significant margin. The EPA reports that such windows can save the equivalent of as much as 6,200 pounds of CO2 emissions thanks to reduced energy consumption associated with the new windows. New windows can brighten a home. Homeowners who have grown accustomed to old windows may not realize how little light such windows let into their homes. Aging windows can become foggy over time and prevent natural light from getting into a home. That can create a gloomy feel and force homeowners to turn up the thermostat on cold days. New windows brighten the home and the natural light that pours in on a cold day can help heat the home at the same time. New windows cut down on noise. Homeowners who currently have single-pane windows may be astonished by the difference in outside noise levels when upgrading to triple-glazed windows, which contain a third layer of glass. That third layer of glass significantly reduces noise levels, making triple-glaze windows ideal for homes on busy streets or those in urban areas with lots of foot traffic. D Replacement windows pay numerous dividends. Continued on page 48 RESIDENTIAL COMMERCIAL & CLEANING SERVICES We Can Do It! 302-249-7660 www.heathershomeworks.com Sit Back & Relax Because,

48 | HOME+GARDEN How to Turn Attics Into Livable Spaces Homeowners who would like to convert attics into livable spaces have a lot to consider before starting an improvement project. While the attic may seem like it has plenty of room and is structurally sound enough to walk in, that’s not necessarily so. To be converted into usable living space, an attic must be brought up to the standards of modern building codes, according to the design experts at Board & Vellum. Retrofitting beams and insulation can eat up available space in an attic. It is best to consult an expert to see if an attic can be converted. An attic that was not initially designed as Attic renovations can be used as offices, bedrooms or cozy corners. a room when the house was built can add extra “load” upstairs if it is converted. That could present certain structural problems. That means a structural engineer also must be consulted to see if adding beams, flooring and drywall will necessitate other changes elsewhere in the home to accommodate the extra load. In order to have a functional attic room, building codes dictate that it is required to have a full-size staircase for accessibility. According to the home information site, The Fill, another exit (likely a window), is required in case of an emergency. Homeowners’ budgets and renovation plans will need to factor into these considerations. Check local permits to determine what else may be required to go forward. It is best to follow the rules. Lack of a permit for work can affect the ability to sell a home down the line. Homeowners should plan for heating and cooling upgrades, like ductwork installed in the attic, or at the least, a standalone heating and cooling unit. As heat rises, it can get quite warm in an attic, so ventilation and comfort is key. The attic will need to be wired for electricity for lighting and other needs. Air sealing and additional insulation can make the attic space more comfortable as well. Consult with a qualified electrician and an HVAC technician and have an energy audit done to discuss needs. 50 | HOME+GARDEN What to Know About Kitchen Countertop Materials The kitchen is the heart of most homes, so it worthwhile to invest in these popular spaces. Kitchen renovations are high on many homeowners’ to-do lists, and there’s many decisions to make once they commit to redoing the room. When renovating a kitchen, homeowners will have to choose which countertop material they want to install. The following rundown of popular options can help simplify that decision. Quartz Quartz is considered a low-maintenance and durable countertop material. Kitchen countertops define how the whole room looks. The home improvement experts at This Old House note that quartz countertops are typically 94 percent ground quartz and now come with honed, sandblasted or embossed treatment, which makes them appealing to homeowners. Quartz can crack if it’s not handled properly, and edges and corners can chip over time. Rounded edges can minimize the risk of chipping. Costs vary by location and product availability, but quartz typically costs about the same as natural stone.
