Granite Consumer Reports notes that no two slabs of granite are the same, and that uniqueness has long appealed to homeowners. Tests run by Consumer Reports found that heat, cuts and scratches did not harm granite, though this material, like quartz, can crack around edges and corners. Granite is a durable material that, if properly maintained, can last several decades. Granite also is nonporous, which makes it resistant to bacteria. LaminateLaminate countertops appeal to budget-friendly homeowners. Consumer Reports notes that they’re easy to install. Home Depot also notes that laminate countertops come in a wide range of colors, textures and designs. Laminate countertops also are durable, which helps budget-conscious homeowners stretch their dollars even further. Laminate countertops are easily maintained, though it’s also easy to permanently damage them with knives, so Consumer Reports recommends always using a cutting board when preparing meals on laminate. Butcher Block Butcher block countertops are among the more unique options homeowners may consider. Sometimes referred to as “wood countertops,” butcher block countertops are made from wooden strips that are fused together. The home improvement experts at BobVila.com note that butcher block is among the more affordable materials, but the final cost will be dictated by location and availability. BobVila.com notes that butcher block countertops are highly sensitive to liquid, so exposure to moisture should be limited. Sealing butcher block countertops immediately after installation can help protect against bacteria and warping. Though butcher blocks can be high maintenance, many homeowners find the unique look is well worth the extra elbow grease. D Kitchen countertops define how the whole room looks. 54 | HOME+GARDEN If you are planning on a big landscaping project, you may want to speak with neighbors first. The Ultimate Wood Floor Cleaning Guide Wood floors are coveted for a number of reasons, not the least of which is their aesthetic appeal. Many people prefer wood flooring because dust and dirt do not become trapped as they would in carpet fibers, seemingly making wood flooring easy to clean. Most floors endure a lot of wear and tear. With care, wood flooring could last for decades. Part of that care includes understanding how to properly clean and maintain wood floors so they look their best. The following are some steps for keeping wood floors as pristine as possible. Remove your shoes. It’s a good idea to remove shoes, particularly heels, when walking on wood floors. Sharp heels, cleats and other shoes can scratch or dent wood flooring. All shoes can track in excess dirt, which can contribute to a lack of luster. Sweep or vacuum frequently. The experts at The Spruce suggest sweeping, vacuuming or dust mopping wood floors daily. Dirt and dust make floors more slippery, and dirt or sand particles can lead to scratches on the floor. Cleaning wood floors correctly can add to their appeal and longevity. 56 | HOME+GARDEN Learn your flooring type. Wood flooring is broken down into three main categories: solid hardwood flooring, engineered hardwood flooring and laminate wood flooring. Traditional hardwood is made of planks or strips of any hardwood covered in a wood stain. Engineered flooring is manufactured by gluing together several thin piles of hardwood. Laminate flooring looks like wood but generally is a veneer or a photographic image of wood covered by a thick layer of melamine resin over fiberboard. Skip harsh cleansers. Regardless of flooring type, most are covered by a sealant that can become streaky or dull if the wrong cleanser is used. Avoid chlorine bleach, ammonia, pine oil, or undiluted vinegar. Instead, choose a cleanser that is specifically recommended for the flooring type. Do not allow water or solutions to sit on the floor, as that can contribute to staining and warping. With laminate flooring, avoid wet mopping unless the flooring is specifically marked as being able to be wet. The underlayers of laminate flooring can warp if it gets wet. Damp is better than wet. When cleaning wood flooring, use a damp rather than a soaking wet mop. Better Homes & Gardens says standing water can damage wood. Use the hard floor setting. When vacuuming, adjust the vacuum to a hard flooring setting, which will not engage the brush rollers on the vacuum head. Rollers can scratch wood and laminate flooring, advises The Home Depot. Use repair products. Scratch and repair kits can fill in small scratches. Wood floor polish and wood waxes also can revitalize worn or lackluster floors. Again, check that the product is safe for your particular flooring before use. D With laminate flooring, avoid wet mopping. 60 | HOME+GARDEN Don’t Get Shocked by Home Electric Safety Issues The Electrical Safety Foundation International says each year electrical malfunctions account for 35,000 home fires causing more than 1,130 injuries, 500 deaths and $1.4 billion in property damage. Since the average American home was built in 1977, many existing homes of this age and older simply cannot handle modern electrical demand without modification. Tripping of circuit breakers or blowing fuses regularly, lights dimming when other devices are in use, buzzing sounds from outlets or switches, discolored outlets and underpowered appliances are warning signs that you may have bigger problems. Additional warning signs can include a tingling feeling when an electrical appliance is touched, rubbery or burning smells. People can take certain precautions to ensure electrical safety at home and at work. Follow these guidelines courtesy of the National Fire Protection Association. • Have any home you are buying or renting inspected by a qualified private inspector in accordance with local requirements. • When electrical work is needed, hire a qualified, licensed electrician. • Use only one heat-producing appliance plugged into a receptacle outlet at a time. • Do not use extension cords for major appliances like ovens, washers, stoves or microwaves. They should be plugged directly into a wall receptacle outlet. • Ground-fault circuit interrupters should be installed in kitchens, bathrooms, garages and basements to shut off an electrical circuit when it becomes a hazard. • Extension cords should only be used temporarily. Have an electrician install more outlets if they are needed. • Make sure outdoor lights and other fixtures are rated for outdoor use. • Label the circuit breakers to understand the different circuits in the home and know which to turn off when electrical work is being conducted. 62 | HOME+GARDEN How to Tell When You Can Stop Mowing Each weekend in spring, summer and fall, millions of homeowners fire up their mowers and cut the grass in their yards. A few hours spent mowing the lawn can be a great time to get some sun and some exercise in the great outdoors. As fall gradually transitions to winter, homeowners may wonder when to stop mowing. Each lawn is different, and when to stop mowing may depend on a host of factors, including local climate and the type of turf. In addition, homeowners can keep an eye on these following conditions to determine when the time is right to put their mowers away for the winter. A host of factors can help homeowners determine when it’s safe to put their mowers away. Frost Warm-season grasses typically go dormant after a couple of significant frosts. Homeowners can jot down each frost during fall. Frosts are most noticeable in the early morning hours, so be sure to check lawn conditions each morning as the weather begins to grow cold. Frost may be noticeable without even going outside, but homeowners may need to go outside to check on chilly mornings or on days when the previous night was especially cold. 64 | HOME+GARDEN grass to protect it. Two or three frosts might be enough to make warm-season grasses go dormant for the winter. Cool-season grasses may keep growing and require mowing even after a few frosts, so be sure you know which type of grass you have. Soil temperature If it’s hard to determine if frosts have occurred, try checking the temperature of their soil to decide if they need to keep mowing. The lawn care experts at Pennington recommend homeowners continue mowing warm-season grasses so long as they keep growing. Lawns may not grow as quickly in fall as they do in spring or summer and growth may not be as visible to the naked eye during this time of year as it is in other times. Homeowners can routinely check soil temperature to determine if their grasses have stopped growing. Warm-season grasses tend to stop growing once the soil temperature is consistently at 55 F or below, while cool-season grasses tend to stop when temperatures are 45 F or lower. Falling leaves have long been a barometer used by homeowners to determine if they need to keep mowing their lawns. That’s not necessarily a reliable metric, as grass can still keep growing even if leaves have been falling for weeks. In addition, using a mulching mower when leaves begin falling is a great way to provide the lawn with nutrients it can use throughout the winter. Some trees shed their leaves more quickly than others, but it’s a good rule of thumb that lawns will need to keep being mowed if trees are still retaining more than half their leaves. 68 | HOME+GARDEN any repairs, as special materials are needed to withstand the heat of fires. Clear the clutter. Items can accumulate in areas that are not in use, and a fireplace is no exception. Take a few hours to remove any belongings from in front of the fireplace and clean the mantle thoroughly. Prune overhanging branches. If there are trees close to the home and the chimney, cut them back, as they can be a fire hazard. Branches and leaves also can restrict the proper draft of the chimney. Check glass or other coverings. The glass or face of the fireplace helps regulate carbon monoxide exposure and protects people from the flames. Be sure the glass covering is intact. Clean ceramic logs. Gas fireplaces use ceramic logs, rocks or beads that can become dusty. Clean them prior to use. Dirty ceramic logs can be a fire hazard and produce an unpleasant burning smell. Failure to clean chimneys is one of the leading contributors to fires. Check the blower and pilot. If the fireplace has an electric blower, clean it so it doesn’t become clogged. Inspect the pilot light for any wiring or structural issues. Install a chimney cap and screen. A chimney cap goes over the top of the chimney. It is made of steel or copper mesh with a cap on top. This protects the chimney from rain and downdrafts and keeps animals and debris from getting into the chimney. Assess the outdoor vent. Gas fireplaces emit exhaust through a vent in the home. 70 | HOME+GARDEN How to Keep Animals Safe Outdoors Domestic companion animals can benefit from time in the great outdoors. It provides them new sights and sounds, opportunities to explore, and new ways to exercise. Their owners just need to take precautions to make outdoor ventures safe for domesticated animals. Make the yard pet-friendly. Fences stop pets from running away, and they can limit the probability that predators will get inside the yard. The yard should routinely be inspected for dangers, including poisonous plants (poison ivy, mushrooms) that pets may ingest, as well as other hazards. Install a pet door. Doors can be purchased with radio-signal locks that will disengage Pet owners can safeguard pets when spending time outdoors. when a pet wearing an electric collar tries to go through; otherwise, the door stays closed for security reasons. Prevent parasites. Work with your veterinarian to get a prescription for parasite preventatives. This includes flea and tick medication and worm medication. Pets may get heartworms from the bites of mosquitoes. Therefore, limit the number of mosquitoes on your property by draining standing water and potentially using repellents if mosquitoes are a nuisance. Check in frequently. Fences may keep some predators out, but those that can fly or climb (or burrow) can make it inside. Keep tabs on pets while they are outside. Do not keep a dog tied up for a while, as the animal may get tangled and choke. Avoid hidden poisons. Antifreeze, oil and even discarded trash can be dangerous to pets if ingested. Pet owners need to exercise caution on walks. Exercise caution in stores. By and large, only certified service animals are legally allowed to be in most retail stores. Bringing an “emotional support animal” or another pet in the store can compromise the ability of trained animals to properly provide care because they may become distracted by other pets. Non-service animals also may become injured by shopping carts or get under feet of shoppers if they are not properly leash-trained. 72 | HOME+GARDEN What to Consider Before Renovating a Driveway Driveways are oft-overlooked components of home exteriors. Industry experts estimate that a new driveway costs between $5,000 and $7,000, though the price will vary based on the materials homeowners choose and the square footage of the driveway. When deciding whether or not to renovate their driveways, homeowners can review these considerations. Driveways can be made from a variety of materials, even grass or soil. The following are some driveway materials homeowners may choose from: gravel, chip seal, concrete, asphalt, rubber, exposed aggregate, pavers, permeable pavers or even heated. Repair or replace? Nearly any size crack can be patched with concrete or cold-patch asphalt, according to This Old House, an online home improvement resource. Repairing a driveway can help prolong its longevity. Plus, this is a more cost-effective option for homeowners on a budget who want to improve curb appeal and safety. Large holes may require a driveway replacement. Replacing a driveway A new driveway can improve the functionality of a home. requires a time commitment. After the new material is laid, there may be a period of time for settling and curing, during which use of the driveway is prohibited. DIY or professional? While sealing and minor repairs generally can be handled by a homeowner who has researched the process, large repairs or driveway replacements should be left to professionals. Driveway slope needs to be considered for proper rain runoff, and the professional will understand the thickness and preparatory steps necessary to ensure driveway durability. Installation of a heated driveways requires a specific skill set. Driveway enhancements The options do not end with the driveway material. There are other ways to boost aesthetics. Illumination Homeowners can install recessed LED lights into the driveway to define the edges and add aesthetic appeal. Stamped texture Homeowners opting for the affordability of concrete can ask for a stamped design that mimics the look of stone or pavers. Gates Gates can give a home a distinguished look. Edging Driveways can be edged with another material to create definition between the driveway and lawn, or to provide the perfect spots to plant beds. 74 | HOME+GARDEN Gift Ideas For the Family Do-it-yourselfer According to iProperty Management, most homeowners in the United States spent between $5,000 and $10,000 improving their homes in 2018. And it doesn’t stop there, as home improvement sales are projected to reach $465 billion in 2022. Having the right tools and gear on hand can make projects go all the more smoothly. Holiday shoppers can consider these ideas as they seek to ensure DIYers have all they need to get the job done. Painting time-savers. Painting requires some basic essentials, from paint trays to rollers to brushes. Projects can be made more efficient with innovative products that help save time and reduce mess. One such item is a paint brush cover, which snaps over wet paintbrushes between coats so they won’t dry out or require rinsing. Brushes that cut in easily and others with flexible handles for getting in tight places also make painting projects that much easier. Cordless drill. A mechanical drill makes easy work of assembly projects and general renovations that require screws as fasteners. A cordless rechargeable drill will be easy to maneuver when handling projects away from outlets. Going cord-free also reduces the risk of trips and falls on errant cords. Lawn care subscription service. Home improvements extend to the exterior. In addition to mowers, trimmers and garden shears, DIYers may benefit from subscription products that improve on property care. These formulations are customized to the specific needs of homeowners’ lawn or landscaping greenery and are shipped right to their door. Rotary tool kit. This is one of the most versatile tools homeowners can have on hand. A rotary tool can engrave, grind, sharpen, polish, cut, carve, and more depending on the accessory attachment. Multi-use ladder. A ladder is a necessity for various projects inside and outside the home. One that can transform into an A-frame, scaffold system, staircase ladder and other configurations helps ensure maximum safe reach for the job at hand. Composter. Whether you use an indoor kitchen composter or one designed for outdoor use, being able to generate one’s own compost is great for avid gardeners. Compost, often called “black gold,” is made from kitchen scraps, leaves and other items that break down into a rich fertilizer. Tool box/tool organizer. Tool storage is a market all its own. It runs the gamut from rolling metal storage containers to plastic or metal boxes to canvas bags to plastic molded curated kits. Organizing units. Organizing units are available in prefabricated kits that are easily assembled when needed, as well as custom-made products that are installed by a professional. They may be an option for a handy person looking to organize tools and other items for home repairs.
