Invest in your health with changes in your diet

It’s never too late to make lifestyle
changes that positively impact our
health.

We often choose our foods based
on taste, familiarity, cost, and/or avail-
ability. What we choose to eat is not
necessarily what our bodies need us
to eat. A diet that is deficient in nutri-
ents is one that can lead to health and
weight problems.

As people age, diets become increas-
ingly important to lessen the risks of
disease by eating nutritious items.

If you’re unfamiliar with what it
takes to create a well-balanced menu,
you should start by asking your gener-
al practitioner for a referral to a quality
nutritionist. Based on your health and
diet, he or she can recommend a plan
that works specifically for you.

Check with your healthcare provid-
er to ensure their services are covered
by your insurance.

Staying active even with limited mobility

While there are many health disor-
ders that can affect your mobility and
energy, you shouldn’t be discouraged
from engaging in more stationary
activities.

If it’s difficult to stay physically ac-
tive, challenging your mind can have
great health benefits to your cognitive
health.

According to the National Institutes
on Aging, simple activities like read-
ing, photography and learning a new
skill can improve your memory and
ability to think. If you’re struggling
to find activities to occupy your time,
consider partaking in some of these
beneficial activities.

Brain-healthy habits
to adopt today

Cognitive decline is a condition that is often asso-
ciated with aging, but even middle-aged people can
experience memory loss or cognition issues.

The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than
five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s
disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number
could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than
747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or
another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s
Association.

Although there is no definitive way to prevent
dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible
by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain.
It is never too late or too early to begin health and
lifestyle changes.
