Downsizing Aging men and women often take inventory of their lives
in an effort to focus on activities or lifestyle changes that can
before a ensure happy retirements. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau
shows there are some 76 million baby boomers — those
move people born between 1946 to 1964 — across the country. With
the youngest of the boomers in their mid-50s and the major-
ity having already reached retirement age, many boomers are
trying to decide if it’s time to move out of their family homes
and into smaller, more manageable abodes.
Many older adults find they do not need the same amount
of space as they did when they had children living at home.
Retirees and those on the cusp of retirement may find that
downsizing is a smart financial move that frees up more time
for recreation.
However, it can be challenging to cut down on living
space and then deal with figuring out how to make furniture,
belongings and stored items fit in more condensed areas.
Moving can be stressful even without having to cut down
on prized items. Taking an inventory of belongings can help
the process go smoothly.
Before moving, go room by room, making piles of items
that will be kept, donated, sold, or discarded. This can be a
tedious task, but it is necessary to avoid clutter in a new
home.
People downsizing can attempt to sell items they do not
need via newspaper classified sections or online classified
sites. Appliances and furniture in excellent shape may fetch

Make travel a key component of retirement
When the time comes to bid fare-
well to conference calls, meetings and
daily commutes, retirees have open
schedules to fill with whichever activi-
ties they choose. Travel is one exciting
way to pass the time.
Traveling can be a rewarding pros-
pect for active seniors, particularly
those who successfully preplanned
for retirement and have the income
to fund various excursions. Many
seniors, both in the United States and
Canada, find that travel tops their to-
do lists once they retire.
According to Senior Travel maga-
zine, new travel options are emerging
for newly minted retirees looking for
something a little different from the
status quo.
The list of destinations retirees
have at their disposal is limitless. The
following ideas are some of the more
popular ways retirees choose to travel.

For those who retired and reside in

Royal Caribbean, The Cruise Critic, the Travel Channel,
and other vacationing experts.
• Research the ships, and not just the cruise lines. Cruise
lines each offer their own amenities and are known for
certain features. One cruise line may be a better match for
young singles, while others may cater to families. In addi-
tion, certain ships may have their own special features such
as water slides, athletic events, casinos, and more. Choose
a ship that meets your needs.
• Arrive the night before. There’s no need to rush to the
port to board the ship. Extend the vacation a little further
by arriving a night or two before and checking into a nearby
hotel. Some hotels may offer free parking or shuttle service
to the ship.
• Choose a close port. Select a port within driving
distance to avoid airline costs and the extra hassles of co-
ordinating luggage and travel to the port.
• Book dining ahead of time. Cruise ships often have a
main dining room and then specialty restaurants. If you
want a particular meal, make reservations before leaving
port. Certain restaurants may offer discounts or perks, such
as a free bottle of wine or premiere seating.

Ways to make your
money stretch further
Living on fixed income after retirement requires that many
retirees make some financial concessions. Retirement income
likely won’t equal the income professionals earned while
they were still working, so men and women approaching
retirement may want to begin prioritizing their purchases
and choosing which luxuries they can and cannot live
without going forward.
Managing on a fixed income may necessitate some
changes, but a little frugality and financial wherewithal
can ensure seniors need not compromise too much during
their golden years.
• Change your dining habits. Many people enjoy meals
out on the town after getting home from work and
spending time with the family.
Retirees have more flexible schedules, and adjust-
ing the time of day when they dine out can add up to
considerable savings. Many brunch and lunch offerings
are less expensive than dinner menus, and seniors can
use this to their advantage.
Meet up for lunch and spend less. If you prefer take-out, order
