54 • Great Walks & Trails in Sussex County 2026CAPE HENLOPEN STATE PARK - GORDONS PONDGordons Pond is a 900-acre saltwater lagoon located within Cape Henlopen State Park. The 2.7-mile Gordons Pond Trail runs along the west side of the pond and ends at Herring Point, a beach area popular with surfers and surf fishers. The trail is a hotspot for birdwatchers, as it lies along one of North America’s four major migratory flyways. The trailhead begins at the north end of the Gordons Pond parking lot, near the picnic pavilion. This large, paved lot—accessed via Ocean Drive through the North Shores community in Rehoboth Beach—has about 500 spaces. It fills quickly on summer days, so early arrival is recommended. The trail is ADA-accessible and composed of a well-maintained, crushed stone surface, making it suitable for walkers, joggers, and cyclists. Leashed pets are welcome. The route winds through intermittent shade with native vegetation like loblolly pine, wax myrtle, grasses, and the occasional hardwood tree. Benches are spaced throughout, offering peaceful views of the lagoon and surrounding wildlife.Roughly half a mile in, an ADAaccessible observation deck provides sweeping views of Gordons Pond, nearby World War II observation towers, dunes, and the Atlantic Ocean. Interpretive signs highlight bird species commonly seen here—including gulls, osprey, herons, ducks, egrets, geese, and terns. From there, the trail extends to the Herring Point parking area, crossing over 2,000 feet of elevated boardwalk through marsh habitat. This section passes near the walking dunes—areas shaped by wind that were once traversed only by informal paths.Along this stretch, visitors can spot wooded islands where ospreys nest and bald eagles often perch in bare trees overlooking the pond. In winter, Gordons Pond becomes a haven for snow geese, Canada geese, and migrating ducks—prime hunting grounds for eagles. Those arriving at Herring Point One of Delaware’s most popular trails—loved by cyclists and hikers alike CHRIS RAUSCH PHOTO An informational sign on the Gordons Pond observation deck helps visitors identify local and migratory species.

A 1.7-mile pine forest trail winds through the park’s cooler, shaded interior, while Birding, biking, beaches, hiking – spend a day or a week here

Great Walks & Trails in Sussex County 2026 • 59other walking options include:• A 0.6-mile stroll from the Nature Center to the Delaware Bay• A tour of historic Fort Miles and its restored artillery• A visit to the iconic World War II fire control tower• A stop at the main bathhouse and snack bar• The park’s disc golf courseBuilt in 1942, Fort Miles once protected the bay from enemy ships and submarines. Nearby, the park’s pine forests offer a key resting spot for thousands of migrating birds each spring, including osprey, red crossbills, terns, ducks, geese, brown pelicans, bald eagles, and the rare peregrine falcon.Horseshoe crabs—among the oldest living species on Earth—lay eggs on the bay’s beaches, feeding migrating shorebirds. During summer, Cape Henlopen’s point is often closed to protect nesting piping plovers, but the area is accessible other times of the year. Don’t miss the sunset view from the parking lot near the Maritime Exchange Tower, with the Delaware Breakwater Lighthouse in the distance. In the evenings, herds of deer—sometimes including rare piebald deer—can be spotted along Cape Henlopen Drive. Be sure to check for ticks before leaving. The best parking is available at the Nature Center, the bathhouse, and near Fort Miles and the fire tower.Biden Environmental Training CenterOn the southern side of the park, you'll find the recently renovated Biden Environmental Training Center. Originally constructed in the early 1960s as part of the Oceanographic Research Station at Fort Miles, the center was acquired by the state in the 1990s with the help of then-U.S. Senator Joe Biden and was dedicated in his honor in 1998. After being closed for over a decade due to safety and accessibility concerns, the center underwent a $15 million renovation, completed in December 2024 .The two-story facility now features:• Three updated meeting rooms, BILL SHULL PHOTO The newly renovated Biden Environmental Center in Cape Henlopen State Park. 62 • Great Walks & Trails in Sussex County 2026Trenny’s Loop is a healthy and pleasant walk around historic downtown Lewes. Many years ago, a group of six ladies started the daily morning walk as a fitness and social routine. The size of the group swelled and shrank depending on who was in town, but the first hour after daylight would usually find as few as two or as many as eight walkers on their stroll. Their course never varied and the ladies did it so often, they could walk it in their sleep. Rose Ksebe and the late Trenny Elliott, a longtime community supporter and activist, have been two of the most consistent members of the walking group. Trenny died of cancer in 2007 but up until she could no longer stand, she was a regular on the loop that now bears her name. Trenny and Rose were neighbors on Gills Neck Road, their homes overlooking the canal. They would start their walk at 124 Gills Neck Road and head southeast toward Rodaline Avenue where the walk turns right. The walk then turns right again on Third Street and passes City Hall before it intersects with Kings Highway at the historic home of This easy walk offers great views of Lewes, its marshes and waterwaysCITY OF LEWES - TRENNY’S LOOPTRENNY’S LOOPCLAYTON AVCEDAR STCEDAR STE MARKET STE MARKET STANGLERS RDMIDLAND AVEE SAVANNAH RDALASKA AVEVIRGINIA AVE GEORGIA AVECAPE HENLOPEN DRKINGS HWYKINGS HWYTHEODORE C. This guided walk covers just about a mile — offering a full, leisurely loop through Lewes’ most important historic and scenic spots. Let’s begin!Start your journey at the foot of the Savannah Road drawbridge, facing inland toward Route 1. From here, Lewes opens up like a storybook in all directions.First, turn right onto Front Street. You'll quickly come to 1812 Park, where benches, flowers, and cannons recall the War of 1812, when Lewes successfully resisted British bombardment. Across the street stands the Cannonball House (1765), still bearing a cannonball fired by the British — a powerful reminder of the town’s resilient spirit.Continuing down Front Street, you'll pass:• The Lewes Post Office (1953), whose solid brick architecture fits the historic setting.CITY OF LEWES - HISTORICAL TOURExplore Historic Lewes: A Complete Walking Tour

Beyond that, admire the restored Overfalls Lightship, the historic Lewes Life Saving Station (1884), and the charming ship store nearby. At the end of Front Street, you’ll reach the Little League ballfields near Pilottown Road. Take a brief detour up Pilottown Road if you like, enjoying views of historic homes along the canal. You'll pass the old Lewes Dairy site and spot the University of Delaware’s Virden Center, close to the monument marking the 1631 Dutch settlement — the very first European settlement in Delaware. After exploring Pilottown Road, return to Front Street, and take Shipcarpenter Street inland toward Second Street. Here, you enter the Historic Lewes Complex — a shady stroll through lovingly preserved buildings including:• Hiram Rodney Burton House (1720)• Burton-Ingram House (1785)• Rabbit’s Ferry House (1741)• Midway School (1898 oneroom schoolhouse)• Old Doctor’s Office (1840)• Early Plank House (1700)• Thompson Country Store (1800)Be sure to notice the restored net reel, another nod to Lewes' fishing heritage. If you want a slight extra loop, DOWNTOWN LEWESHISTORIC TRAIL• Distance: About 1 mile.• Calories burned: About 200.• Parking: 1812 Park parking lot between canal and Post Office.• Tour Highlights:This tour takes visitors through the heart of the historic district of the First Town in the First State. 78 • Great Walks & Trails in Sussex County 2026LEWES-GEORGETOWN TRAILThe Lewes-Georgetown Trail has become one of Sussex County’s key recreational and transportation corridors. When complete, the planned 17 mile paved trail will stretch from the historic town of Lewes to Georgetown, the county seat, following a former railroad alignment. Once finished, it will become the longest rail trail in Delaware and part of a growing 30+ mile network connecting to Cape Henlopen State Park and the Junction & Breakwater Trail. The trail’s route is steeped in history. Lewes was Sussex County’s original seat of government before it moved to Georgetown in 1791 to create a more centralized location. Today, the trail symbolically reconnects these two towns while providing a safe, scenic path for biking, walking and running.Completed SectionsThe first segment, 1.5 miles between Gills Neck Road and Savannah Road in Lewes, opened in 2016. By 2019, the trail extended past Savannah Road, through Nassau, and beneath the Route 1 overpass, providing a safe connection between the east and west sides of the highway. From Savannah Road to Route 9 at Cool Spring, the trail is paved with asphalt. This section covers roughly six miles. West of Cool Spring, additional segments continue to be developed toward Georgetown.Rail-with-TrailWhile the rail line has been fully abandoned east of Cool Spring, active rail still exists on some segments between Cool Spring and Georgetown. This means the final stretch may include railwith-trail design where feasible, allowing both trail use and rail operations to coexist.Trailheads and EnhancementsIn 2019, the Sussex CountyLand Trust, in collaboration with state and county agencies, acquired 30 acres at the intersection of Route 9 and Cool Spring Road. This land, now known as Stephen P. Hudson Park, has been preserved as open space and recreational land. 84 • Great Walks & Trails in Sussex County 2026The Junction & Breakwater Trail stretches between the resort towns of Lewes and Rehoboth Beach, running along the western edge of Cape Henlopen State Park. As Delaware’s third and longest rail trail, it has become a vital recreational and economic asset for eastern Sussex County in the 21st century. In May 2014, the completion of the Gordons Pond Trail extension connected with the Junction & Breakwater Trail to form a scenic 16-mile loop between Lewes and Rehoboth Beach.Named after the rail line that once served the area, the trail follows the former Penn Central Railroad corridor, which transported passengers to Methodist resort camps along the coast in the mid-1800s.The trail officially opened on Dec. 4, 2003, with an initial 3.6-mile crushed-stone path stretching from Hebron Road in West Rehoboth to the Wolfe Glade trestle. It remained a dead-end until June 4, 2007, when a 2.4-mile extension brought the trail’s total length to six miles. On the Lewes end, the trail begins at Gills Neck Road beneath the Freeman Highway bridge. From there, a paved section parallels Freeman Highway before turning southeast across a field toward another Gills Neck Road intersection. Turn right at this point, then look for signs on the left just past the Hawkseye community entrance, where the trail resumes and continues to Rehoboth. An alternate route is to follow Gills Neck Road from the Savannah Road drawbridge in downtown Lewes. This scenic but less-safe option runs along the LewesRehoboth Canal and through the rural, quickly developing outskirts of Lewes. There are no shoulders, so walkers and riders should proceed with caution—but shared use is possible with courtesy.Using this route, trail users can pick up an improved section just west of the Wolfe Runne development entrance. From there, the trail passes through Hawkseye and connects to the improved railroad bed leading south to Rehoboth.Another access point is near Cape Henlopen High School on Freeman Highway. Parking there allows easy entry to the trail as it parallels Gills Neck Road through open fields.Parking is also available on Wolfe Neck Road, near McDonald’s and Wawa off Route 1. Note: the former access and parking area behind Tanger Outlets Seaside Center is no longer available due to the construction of Schellville Village. However, a new trail access path has been created in front of the Microtel Inn and Suites, behind the outlets.Riders starting from Rehoboth can head north over the LewesRehoboth Canal drawbridge and turn right onto Church Street. From there, turn left past the church and follow the road past Canal Corkran to reach Hebron Road. A left turn on Hebron brings you to the trailhead, which initially passes between storage units and the West Rehoboth community before curving into wooded terrain. After crossing Holland Glade Road, the trail continues north toward Lewes.JUNCTION AND BREAKWATER TRAILRON MACARTHUR PHOTOThe Junction & Breakwater Trail between Rehoboth and Lewes paved the way for more trails in the Cape Region. Use this trail to make a day of exploring Lewes and Rehoboth

JUNCTION & BREAKWATER TRAIL • Distance: 6 miles from Cape Henlopen High School to Rehoboth Beach - 16 miles if you connect with the Gordons Pond Trail on the ocean side of Cape Henlopen State Park.• Calories burned: About 450 walking or 300 bicycling. The trail is flat and, depending on weather, good riding and walking all year long.Alternatively, riders can turn right on Hebron Road and follow a side path to another Holland Glade Road crossing near the Rehoboth Beach Little League park. This spur connects to the main trail near another offshoot once used for access to the Tanger Outlets. The Junction & Breakwater Trail follows the historic rail corridor through a mix of wooded and open areas, with scenic views of coastal marshes at Wolfe Glade and Holland Glade—two designated natural areas highlighted by their picturesque bridge crossings.Recent Enhancements and Future DevelopmentsHolland Glade Road EnhancementsIn late 2024, construction began on a 1,100-foot multi-use trail and a 325-foot sidewalk along Holland Glade Road, near the trail's crossing by Epworth United Methodist Church. This project includes the addition of three new curb ramps and modifications to the trail crossing. The Delaware Department of Transportation also plans to install a new traffic signal at the Route 1 intersection to enhance safety for trail users. Additionally, the Glade Property Owners Association has submitted an application for an innovation grant to fund a feasibility study for extending the trail along Holland Glade Road. If approved, this extension would further improve connectivity in the area. Wolfe Neck Loop ProjectPlans are underway to create a six-mile loop trail around the Wolfe Neck Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility. This project involves converting nearly 400 acres of farmland to reforested woodlands, providing public access to parts of Cape Henlopen State Park that have been closed for two decades. The trail will feature a wildlife viewing platform overlooking the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal and will include as many as 11 boardwalks and a bridge. The loop will double the length of the existing 6-mile Junction & Breakwater Trail linking Lewes and Rehoboth Beach. The land will continue to be used for spraying treated wastewater, but instead of discharging onto crops, the effluent will irrigate hundreds of acres of newly planted trees and vegetation. This reforestation effort is being undertaken with assistance from the Delaware Center forthe Inland Bays. Full Map For This Trail On Page 10

94 • Great Walks & Trails in Sussex County 2026BURTON ISLAND NATURE PRESERVEA destination for wildlife enthusiasts, the 222 acre Burton Island Nature Preserve is tucked behind the Indian River Marina in Delaware Seashore State Park. This quiet landscape, shaped by the tides, has an ecosystem teeming with life. Black crowned night herons stand watch along the causeway as fishing enthusiasts cast their lines. In the salt marsh grasses, glossy ibis gather to feed in the shallows while overhead an osprey flies by clutching a flounder. On the edge of the loblolly pine forest, a diamondback terrapin digs a nest in the sandy soil.To find the trailhead, drive toward the marina office, where restrooms are available in season. Pass the boat docks and continue to the end of the drive. Turn left and a small dirt parking area will be visible. A seasonal Delaware State Park pass is required for visiting. One of 34 designated Delaware State Nature Preserves, Burton Island invites visitors to explore an easy 1.5 mile loop trail that begins at the causeway. Boardwalks provide expansive views of coastal wetlands at both ends of the loop. Once off the boardwalk, salt tolerant shrubs such as groundsel bush and marsh elder host red winged blackbirds and nesting marsh wrens. The flat trail leads to an upland maritime forest shaded by pines, hollies and hardwoods. Beneath these trees, it may seem as if time stands still, yet the island has a long history. Once the site of a Burton family colonial era farm, the island was purchased in 1880 as an exclusive sportsmen’s retreat. In 1925, the property was acquired by Linford P. Faucett, a Delaware native whose heirs later ensured the land would be preserved for future generations.Article by Alice Mohrman.Nancy Sakaduski Photo
