Recreational blue crabbing is permitted in state waters with a Delaware fishing license. Delaware State Park fees are in effect March 1 to Nov. 30. Bathrooms are available in season. The main entrance is accessed via Holt’s Landing Road off Route 26 in Dagsboro. The easy 1.3 mile Seahawk Trail loop begins in the parking lot. The wide trail starts with a boardwalk over tidal wetlands, then winds through deciduous and pine woods and around freshwater pools. Look toward the bay for a bald eagle commanding the skyline above the gulls and terns. In spring, the salt marsh comes alive as male fiddler crabs wave their oversized claws to attract a mate. Around the bend, beneath sassafras trees, Carolina wrens sing in the understory while the drumming of a red bellied woodpecker echoes through the forest. Among the trees are deep water pools called “borrow pits,” created when sand was removed during construction. Listen for the rattle-rattle call of the belted kingfisher as it darts across the water. 112 • Great Walks & Trails in Sussex County 2026JAMES FARM ECOLOGICAL PRESERVEThe James Farm Ecological Preserve is an oasis of wild land in Ocean View, Delaware, located along the southern shore of Indian River Bay just a short drive from Bethany Beach. In 1992, the Preserve property was given to Sussex County by the late Mary Lighthipe, a descendant of the James family who farmed the land for generations. This generous donation was made in memory of her son, Harold, on the condition that the property be used for educational and recreational purposes. The Preserve has been managed by the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays on behalf of Sussex County since 1998.At this 150-acre retreat, you can relax on a calm bayside beach, observe native plants and animals, and hike a variety of trails through seven different habitats. Near the parking area, the meadow hosts native milkweed that is aflutter each fall with migrating monarchs. In the nearby maritime forest, white-tailed deer and foxes make their home among the loblolly pines and American holly. Interspersed within, small patches of hardwood forest feature hickories, oaks, and wild black cherry. In the summer 2025, improvements to the Preserve were completed, including a three-season environmental education building with electricity, presentation capabilities, counter space, and sinks for lab activities. The building can accommodate up to 70 individuals. Additional enhancements include outdoor amphitheater seating, a habitat restoration staging area, and an improved trail system.Small freshwater wetlands absorb flood water during storms, while bayside salt marshes support salt marsh cordgrass, glasswort, and mussels. Sandy beaches are critical nesting habitats for diamondback terrapins and horseshoe crabs, and are feeding grounds for shorebirds. In the mud of the adjacent intertidal flats, fiddler crabs, mollusks, and shrimp are adapted to the harsh environment that is overwashed by salty tides twice daily. The Inland Bays support 100+ species of fish and 40+ species of shellfish. These three bays are a brackish estuary, receiving fresh water from rivers and creeks and saltwater from the Atlantic.Learn more at inlandbays.org. This wide, flat path of crushed stone or pavement follows the perimeter of the 1000 acre main area of the park and is accessible to walkers, bikers and wheelchairs throughout the year. Parking, trail maps and bathroom facilities are located at the Bald Cypress Nature Center close to the park entrance. A smaller parking area, off Wootten Road, has bathroom facilities, views of Bethesda Church and access to the Bob Trail’s extensive boardwalk over freshwater wetlands. Located close to the Nanticoke River and the historic Woodland Ferry crossing, the 20-acre park features nearly a mile of trails, two ponds, and is open daily from dawn to dusk. The land was originally purchased by the county in 2010 for $580,000 to serve as a spoils site for the Nanticoke River dredge project. Only 21 acres of the larger parcel were needed for dredging purposes, allowing the county to transform the remainder into a public park. County Council approved $143,000 for the development of the site, which once operated as the Woodland Golf Park.Designed with an emphasis on passive recreation such as hiking and birdwatching, Woodland Park keeps maintenance costs low by preserving much of its natural landscape. No golfing facilities remain, and the park’s layout allows nature to lead the way. Admission to Woodland Park is free, and parking is available near the entrance.Nearby, the historic Woodland Ferry — also free to use — offers a scenic crossing of the Nanticoke River, adding a fun twist for visitors exploring the western reaches of Sussex County. Woodland Park provides an excellent opportunity for hiking and biking adventures, with its park trail, ferry ride, and access to the flat, peaceful roads that wind south along the river and westward into Maryland’s Eastern Shore. At the time Woodland Park opened, the only other countyowned preserve in Sussex County was the James Farm Preserve near Ocean View, which continues to be managed by the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays. (See the related article elsewhere in this guide about the James Farm Preserve.) 134 • Great Walks & Trails in Sussex County 2026River Watershed Conservancy (NRWC) is to identify, promote and actively seek the acquisition of lands with natural, aesthetic and historic significance in the Nanticoke River watershed and to promote the protection and balanced use of these lands. The non-profit organization protects over 700 acres in Kent and Sussex Counties for future generations. These trails are home to the Seaford and Woodbridge H.S. Cross Country teams. At the trailhead, begin your exploration of the area traveling the Chapel Branch Trail through a wooded canopy of beech, sassafras and hickory trees supporting spring and fall bird migration. Guide posts identify many native plants. Barred owls, tanagers, warblers and woodpeckers are found nesting on site. Follow the gradual slope to the red maple shaded boardwalk and a crystal clear flowing stream which support a variety of fish species, including herring. At the boardwalk junction, you may continue on the trail heading downstream through the woodlands on the Beaver Pond Trail or choose to head north on the Three Ponds Trail climbing on ancient dunes covered in mountain laurel to a loop around the ponds. 138 • Great Walks & Trails in Sussex County 2026The Nanticoke River is the longest, least developed and best preserved tributary in the MidAtlantic region leading to the Chesapeake Bay. The river corridor spanning Delaware and Maryland, was home to the Nanticoke people. In June of 1608, Captain John Smith and his crew navigated the waterway inland to the Bald Cypress wetlands we now know as Trap Pond State Park. The river begins in Seaford and winds 64.3 miles to Tangier Sound. Broad Creek is a major tributary that weaves through historic Laurel and Bethel to meet the Nanticoke near Phillip’s Landing. Vistas are plentiful, yet walking trails are limited. Paddle the Nanticoke (paddlethenanticoke.com) offers water trail maps and identifies ten public boat launch sites in western Sussex County. South of Seaford, follow the state Phillip’s Landing signs, through the historic town of Bethel, on to Phillip’s Landing Road. The town of Bethel was founded in the late 1700’s and was an active shipbuilding community during the 1800’s. Travel along the Nanticoke Heritage Byway to reach Phillip’s Landing. Parking, picnic tables, a boat launch and port-a-potty facilities are available. This scenic overlook offers views of meandering Broad Creek with ample opportunities for birdwatching. Just west of the boat ramp, an easy (.03 mile) pedestrian trail through the mixed deciduous and pine woods follows the shoreline. The trail and the parking lot perimeter attracts spring migrants and summer nesters including the iconic Baltimore Oriole. The Nanticoke Wildlife Area, managed by DNREC Division of Fish & Wildlife, preserves almost 4500 acres of land along the Nanticoke River and Broad Creek in southwestern Sussex County. Multiple tracts of land offer hunting, fishing and boating and some areas are accessible to walkers and hikers. Designated properties are found on both sides of the river. On the northern shore, The “Pete Gum Preserve”is sandwiched between farmland on Woodland Church Road, while across the river, the “Red House Tract” supports the wildlife ecosystem. The Woodland Ferry offers free passage across the river between Tracing the Nanticoke: A Journey Through Time and NatureNANTICOKE WILDLIFE AREAThe Woodland Ferry, “Tina Fallon,” offers a scenic ride across the Nanticoke River between Bethel and Seaford.

It is closed for lunch between 11:00 am and 12:00 pm and on Thursday mornings for maintenance. The “Robert L. Graham” tract in the Nanticoke Wildlife Area, on Phillip’s Landing Road, is designated a Multiple Use Trail. “A Conservation Access Pass (CAP) is required for all registered motor vehicles accessing Delaware’s State Wildlife Areas for any allowable activity, including, but not limited to, hunting, birdwatching, hiking and photography” (Division of Fish & Wildlife). Follow the short drive on the maintained dirt road through the forest to a small parking area. Please do not block any yellow gated access points. On foot, wide level trails of mowed grass are well-marked and easy to walk. Just over 1 mile, the trail loops around an old homestead, a small cultivated field (usually sunflowers), a series of hedgerows and woodland borders. Birdwatching is especially active in April and May with both Summer and Scarlet Tanagers eye-popping red feathers peaking through the leaves and staccato calls from the Yellow-billed Cuckoo. The trail is closed to all non-hunting activities Monday-Saturday from September 1 – February 28 and April 4 – May 9.
