Art for school students 107
The foundation’s work does not

stop once the summer season is over.
It also has educational arts programs
that are year round.

“All nine school districts in Sus-
sex County are part of our arts and
education program, which reaches
an average of 18,000 students a
year September through May,” said
Grimes.

As the arts have become less
emphasized in school curriculum
nationwide, the foundation aims to
bring art education into Delaware
schools to benefit local students.

Programs are designed to reach
students four times as they grow,
to ensure students have a variety of
experiences. “In K to 2, you may have
some music and dance or storytell-
ing, in grades 3 through 5, students
see musical theater,” Grimes said. “In
middle school, we have a visual arts
program where everyone is doing
things like painting a mural or creat-
ing their own unique masterpiece. In
high school, students do performing
arts like poetry. We had ‘Poetry Out
Loud,’ a national program.”

Although expansion is a few years
off, Grimes said the foundation
will continue to work toward its
mission.“We want people to know
that everyone is welcome at the
Freeman Stage. We are a public char-
ity and would not exist without the
community.”
