Concerns previously centered around masks and vaccines have shifted to long wait times for emergency care as well as access to preventive care and elective procedures. Physician and nurse recruitment are a top priority for area healthcare systems. Recruitment campaigns and job fairs dominate the marketplace as healthcare systems attempt to keep up with the growth and refill positions that were vacated during the pandemic. An aging workforce close to retirement only exacerbates the problem. In a November 2022 Cape Gazette article, Timothy Gibbs, executive director of the Delaware Academy of Medicine/Delaware Public Health Association, said, “I think we’re beginning to see the start of the silver tsunami.” He referenced several bar graphs during a presentation showing the anticipated decline of the nursing industry workforce in the near future. “They are exhausted. That is a big piece of it,” added Stephanie McClellan, president of the Delaware Nurses Association, and manager of Bayhealth’s cancer institute. “Burnout is a real thing.” Each year, in conjunction with the release of this publication, The Cape Gazette conducts a survey to gauge the sentiments of local healthcare patients and track healthcare trends from year to year. This year's survey results indicate our readers remain equally satisfied with the overall healthcare options available in Sussex County as they were in 2022. On a positive note, 41% of the 2023 survey reThe new normal continues spondents felt like their confidence in our local healthcare systems went up in the past 12 months, a marked increase from the 29% of respondents who answered the same in 2022. Most notably, survey respondents overwhelmingly (85%) felt the state of Delaware should provide tax credits to assist with recruitment of doctors and nurses to the state. Rarely do we see numbers that indicate such universal agreement.
