The Provider List: Cape Region Healthcare

MED MATTERS | 5 1 By David A. Tam, M.D., MBA, CPHE, FACHE, President and CEO, Beebe Healthcare gical Hospital on the Rehoboth Health Campus opened in May. Beebe’s care team is now performing more surgeries at the new surgical hospital, while still operating at the Beebe Outpatient Surgery Center and continuing our OR volumes in Lewes – we continue to see more patients than ever. The Emergency Departments in Lewes and the South Coastal continue to adapt and serve patients. The Hospital at Home program remains a success. Our Community Mobile Health Clinic is now providing mental healthcare and addiction services throughout Sussex County. Our outpatient services continue to grow as new physician offices are planned in Milton and Selbyville. A new Milford Health Center opened, too. We continue to actively recruit and welcome new providers, clinical staff, other team members and their families to support our growing community. The board of directors in June unveiled a new five-year strategic plan that gives Beebe focus and direction for our future – simply put – to serve the people who live, work, and visit Sussex County as we have for more than 106 years. This is all to say that Beebe will not rest on our laurels. Despite our hard work and laser focus, the winds of change continue to challenge us to do more for our community. In the coming year, Beebe will continue to recruit more physicians and providers to meet the needs of a growing and changing community. We will need to keep growing our facilities and geographic reach to serve more people near their homes and schools and places of work. I am committed to moving Beebe forward and improving what we do. Please help me recruit and welcome new providers and staff. We can work as a community to fund and open new facilities that make access to quality healthcare easier and more equitable for ALL the people of Sussex County. I recognize that we have come a long way, but there is so much more to do. Let’s all strive to help our community become healthier and live more meaningful lives. We will do what Beebe has done for more than 106 years since the two brothers started this great organization – focus on bringing high quality healthcare to the people of Sussex County. Exciting Possibilities for Beebe Healthcare in 2023 “Despite our hard work and laser focus, the winds of change continue to challenge us to do more for our community. ” I t was an exciting year for Beebe Healthcare. I would like to take the opportunity to update the community on the work performed by Team Beebe in 2022. Early on, Sussex County was still in the harsh grips of another surge of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Beebe again stepped up to care for the community in and outside of the hospital. COVID-19 is still with us, but there is a sense of relief that the overall severity of those who are infected is lower and we know what to do and how to care for patients who are ill. Beebe also undertook a massive change in our health system as the Specialty Sur-

MED MATTERS | 5 3 M.D., a bariatric and internal medicine specialist at TidalHealth Medical Weight Loss & Bariatric Nutrition. “Obesity has been recognized as a chronic disease with increasing prevalence in our region.”  For those who need surgery to reach their goal, TidalHealth offers an award-winning program that has helped more than 3,000 patients lose weight since its inception.  Candidates for bariatric surgery include patients who have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 35 who have a co-morbidity — diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea – or patients who have a BMI above 40 who do not have a co-morbidity.   “Patients generally inquire if they are a candidate for surgery if they have experienced a long struggle with weight issues, and inability to independently manage weight loss,” said Jarrod Buzalewski, D.O., of TidalHealth General Surgery. “They will know if they are a candidate if they are willing to commit to a lifetime of lifestyle changes, as well as follow-up with their primary care provider, bariatric medicine specialist and surgeon.”   Buzalewski, who performs general and bariatric surgery at TidalHealth Nanticoke, says some of those key lifestyle changes include:  · modification of food intake, including smaller/more frequent meals (four to six times daily)  · careful attention to adequate protein consumption/hydration, and adherence to multivitamin regimen  · a commitment to increase physical activity as able based on co-morbidities, which often include joint issues.  TidalHealth bariatric surgeons perform a wide variety of procedures including sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass and diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures related to bariatrics. The majority are done minimally invasively using laparoscopic or robotic surgery. Patients generally require a referral to the TidalHealth bariatric program from their provider.    Recovery normally includes six weeks of no lifting heavy objects and a supervised nutritional plan that progresses as patients heal. Most require no more than a couple of days of prescription strength pain medications.     To learn more about weight-loss surgery at TidalHealth, speak with your provider or call TidalHealth Medical Weight Loss & Bariatric Nutrition at 302-297-2412.  TidalHealth Can Help You on Your Weight Loss Journey “Obesity has been recognized as a chronic disease with increasing prevalence in our region.” Diabetes, stroke, heart disease, sleep apnea, back and joint pain — these are all conditions associated with obesity.    If you’re concerned your weight gain could lead to poor health, it’s time to take advantage of the resources available in your own backyard.  Whether it’s through diet and exercise or weight-loss surgery, TidalHealth’s knowledgeable providers can help you shed those unwanted pounds and get back on the path to wellness.  “Our mission is to guide patients to achieve weight loss through a comprehensive program that includes medical or surgical options,” said Sandra Palavecino,

MED MATTERS | 5 5 302 Food Rescue Helps Reduce Food Waste “At the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association, we’re also focused on nutrition security – meaning we want our neighbors to not only have access to food, but access to healthy food such as fresh produce, proteins, and other foods that are low in sodium and sugar,” said Kimberly Holmes MSN, APRN, ACNS-BC, PCCN-K, president, American Heart Association Delaware board directors, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Primary Stroke Program coordinator, Bayhealth Medical Center. “Heart disease is the number one cause of death globally, nationally and here in Delaware. Stroke is the number three cause of death in Delaware. Eighty percent of Cardiovasculardisease and stroke cases can be prevented by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and one of these key factors is diet.” The new 302 Food Rescue app is powered by Food Rescue Hero. Food Rescue Hero was purposefully designed to automate the time consuming and logistical challenges facing food rescue organizations. Food Rescue Hero enables scalable impact on food waste, food insecurity and climate change. “America has more than enough food for everyone to eat. But each year, billions of pounds of perfectly good food go to waste in our country, 302 Food Rescue will allow us to do our part here in Delaware to divert fresh food from the landfill and put it on the plates of those who need it most,” said Food Bank of Delaware President and CEO Cathy Kanefsky. There are several ways to get involved: Volunteer: Become a member of the 302 Food Rescue Crew. These important volunteer positions will be the lifeline of this program. Volunteers can rescue food from local grocery stores, restaurants or retail outlets in real time. The 302 Food Rescue Crew members pick up the food and get it to the Food Bank of Delaware or nearby partners who can distribute it to families in need before it goes bad. Donate: Every dollar donated helps provide meals for our community. Each year, thousands of Delawareans give millions of dollars generously to food banks to help buy meals – and yet it still isn’t enough. Raise awareness: The fight to end hunger begins with understanding the issue. Follow 302 Food Rescue on social media to learn more and share information with your network. Bayhealth.org/Heart-Risk-Assessment to take an online heart risk assessment and learn about Bayhealth’s Heart and Vascular program. “Not having enough nutritious food to eat puts people at increased risk for heart disease, obesity, and other chronic conditions.” Thanks to the power of technology and a smart phone app, Bayhealth, along with the Food Bank of Delaware and American Heart Association & American Stroke Association, collaborated recently to launch a first-in-thenation statewide food rescue program, 302 Food Rescue. 302 Food Rescue connects volunteers (302 Food Rescue Crew) with fresh nutritious foods from participating grocery stores, caterers, restaurants, and others and allows them to deliver to organizations that serve food-insecure individuals across the First State. Since the start of 2023, volunteers rescued 35,124 pounds of food and provided more than 29,270 meals. “Not having enough nutritious food to eat puts people at increased risk for heart disease, obesity, and other chronic conditions. Food-insecure children are also at higher risk for developmental problems and mental health concerns,” said Rosi Wurster, senior vice president and chief nurse executive, Bayhealth.
