8 55+ Rethinking Your Retirement Community Retirement communities used to be exclusively associated with the rocking chair. Not much ever seemed to be going on. Today, many have become bustling facilities with vibrant groups of active residents. Here are tips on finding a retirement community that matches your active lifestyle. Costs and Offerings When researching retirement communities, begin by reviewing their pricing structure. Check and see if individual amenities are additionally priced. Determine what your wants and needs are and research each community. Look for tennis courts, indoor swimming pools, exercise classes, or a place to play outdoor games like horseshoe or bocce if you want a more active community. See what the focus is on socializing, hobbies, or fun activities. Inquire about concierge, dining, and laundry services. These elements of retirement communities are a fast-growing sector of the economy with a wide range of pricing and amenities. Keep looking until you find a few that could be a perfect fit, then schedule a visit. As you arrive, note nearby options like libraries, gardens, or hair salons. 10 55+ a diverse, full schedule of events so that seniors can create or maintain a social circle of friends. Ask to see their calendar to learn more about how they create an open and fun environment. Planned activities might include arts and crafts, movie night, board games, and a book club or dance. Even if you’re not interested in all of them, these get-togethers will help build a sense of community and friendship. Many retirement communities also offer sponsored trips to area points of interest. Lifestyle Considerations Are you moving into this community with a pet? Make sure each potential community allows furry friends. Check additional costs for pets before committing to a move. Some communities restrict visits or travel, so particularly active residents might want to look elsewhere. Proximity to retail, swimming pools, golf courses, churches, and public transportation may be part of your decision-making process. Most important, however, is how close the community is to health care options even if you’re healthy. The facilities should be easily accessible for first responders, and close to your doctor, the hospital, and other needed service providers. Pay close attention to nearby schools, construction projects, or sports facilities if you are sensitive to noise or worried about traffic. Safety is also a concern, so make sure there is ample lighting, a wide array of security measures, emergency-response systems, and a dedicated check-in area for visitors. 12 55+ Branching Out By Learning New Skills The old saying about old dogs and new tricks simply isn’t true. Leaving everyday work schedules behind offers lots of free time to learn something new. Learning new skills opens seniors up to renewed curiosity, new friends, and a more active lifestyle. Take a Class Leisure classes offer a fun, engaging environment for seniors to try something different, and they’re often offered very close to home. Check with local universities, colleges, and community colleges to find out more about what’s offered and when. There is typically a small registration fee, with courses on a wide range of topics. Interested in taking up a musical instrument, cooking, wine, or travel? This is your chance to dive in. You can also increase your financial literacy, explore a different hobby, or try out yoga. Lifelong Learning Institutes (known in Delaware as Osher) also offer stress-free classes. Best of all? No homework and no tests. Continued on Page 14

14 55+ Gather with Others Visit your local Senior Center – Rehoboth, Georgetown, Millsboro, and Lewes to name a few — to find out more about sponsored events. Many senior centers also have programs focusing on hobbies and skills, as well as health-focused offerings for people living with diabetes, balance problems, or who have fitness concerns. Seniors on select Medicare plans are eligible for SilverSneakers, a wellness program held at tens of thousands of fitness centers across the nation. SilverSneakers also offers certain health discounts. Too busy or have specific health concerns? Look for virtual classes if you can’t make in-person meetings. Head to the Park Many city and county parks and recreation departments offer senior programming, often with a focus on health and fitness. Look around and you’ll find plenty of lowor no-cost classes designed especially for seniors. Classes can range from educational seminars, group activities, and workshops to wellness classes and art activities. Learn a new language, a new dance, a new card game, or a new sports activity. Some parks and recreation departments even sponsor active-adult travel programs, with monthly single-day and longer seasonal trips. Affiliated clubs may meet at local community centers, churches, and senior facilities and play host to a range of sponsored activities like games, featured speakers, community service projects, and other special events. 20 55+ If you are planning on a big landscaping project, you may want to speak with neighbors first. Understanding Supplements Supplements are different from prescription medicine, and aren’t subject to the same thorough and time-intensive government testing. Despite claims by the manufacturers of better health or treatment of disease, the effectiveness of supplements hasn’t been conclusively proven. The debate continues. So talk to your health care provider before adding a supplement to your diet. They’ll be able to discuss its effectiveness, and how it might interact with any existing medical regimen. Many Forms Supplements are available in many forms, including pills, capsules, powders, and liquids. Their makers often claim that these supplements are curative based on the presence of vitamins, minerals, herbs, or amino acids. But, the Centers for Disease Continued on Page 22 Safeway Shopping Center 19266 Coastal Hwy, Unit 4 Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971 (302) 227-9220 [email protected] www.parcelplus.com/250 Store Hours Mon - Fri 8:00am - 6pm Sat 9am - 3pm More Ways to Ship Compare Shipping Rates $10 OFF Any Shipment of $40 or more *Includes $10 off shipping for any one FedEx, UPS, or DHL shipment of $40 or more. 22 55+ Control and Prevention does not approve supplements as a preventive or treatment for diseases because of the lack of testing. On the other hand, vitamins have confirmed health benefits. Vitamin B12 aids in nerve health, D helps keep our bones strong, and B6 is critical to the creation of red blood cells. Vitamin B12 is also often prescribed to vegans, who risk deficiency because this vitamin is naturally found in animal sources. Understanding Risks How your supplements interact with medication you’re currently taking is an important topic to discuss with your health care provider. Beginning the discussion with your local pharmacist can uncover valuable information about drug and supplement interactions that you can bring to your health care provider. If you’re scheduled for surgery, let your surgeon look over your list of supplements. For example, Vitamin E can act as a blood thinner so many surgeons ask patients to stop taking it prior to surgery. Honest Discussion Your health care providers are the most familiar with your health. Have a candid discussion about why you’re considering a supplement, as they might suggest another supplement or additional medication that’s more effective. Knowledge is power. Do the research on supplements and then talk to your health care provider. It will save you time and money. 55+ 25 Downsizing Tips The National Association of Realtors notes downsizing is a fast-growing trend among those aged 45 to 64, as rooms or entire floors are vacated by grown children. Leaving a large family home for a smaller place that’s easier to maintain might be right for you, too. Here’s how. Create a Plan Begin creating a plan long before you’re ready to move. Set a tentative move-out date and plan everything backward from there. Start by decluttering. A home with fewer things in it appears much larger which makes it much attractive to potential buyers when you’re ready to sell. And there’s a lot less to pack. Then settle on where you’ll move. You may decide to be closer to your family, or in a favorite vacation destination. Next, decide on the space. Those who value privacy may want a smaller detached home. Apartments and townhomes offer an opportunity to let go of maintenance worries. Discuss your decision with trusted family and friends, in particular those who will be directly affected. They may have great suggestions to help you with your decision-making process. Then set reasonable, achievable goals for getting rid of unneeded items, preparing the property for sale, and moving. Where you move could have a direct effect on the timeline, since moving companies usually need more advance notice for longer routes. Think Small Think Small Get rid of any duplicate items and stay focused on the future by matching items you plan to keep – including furniture, bedding, and kitchen items – with your new place. You’re gaining a new future, not simply leaving the past behind. It can be tempting to put off decisions about getting rid of stuff, but procrastinating will only make the process more difficult. Gift a few cherished keepsakes to family and friends, offering personal notes or stories about why they are meaningful. But save the most emotional items for later. Once you’re in a rhythm with decluttering, it will be easier to let go of certain things. Lowering Your Risk of Stroke About 75 percent of strokes occur in people 65 and over according to numerous national surveys. Some factors, like family history, are beyond your control. But we can cut down our chances with a few simple lifestyle changes and new habits. Proactive Approach High blood pressure is a key factor in strokes. Experts recommend taking your blood pressure regularly and consistently to obtain accurate baseline data. Many medical practices can receive the data automatically. Monitoring your blood pressure means you can move quickly if the results change and begin a treatment plan with your health care provider. Typically, medication and lifestyle changes are treatment or preventive measures. Also keep a close eye on cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Smoking can also raise your blood pressure. Establish a regular check-up schedule so you can monitor other telling symptoms like arrhythmias, which can lead to stroke and get scans that look for plaque buildup or blockages. 55+ 29 Continued on Page 30 ferrishomeimprovements.com TWO LOCATIONS 302-998-4500 NEWARK 302-260-5200 REHOBOTH ROOFING ROOFING WINDOW & DOORS KITCHENS & BATHS SIDING OUTDOOR LIVING GUTTERS SMALL EXTERIOR REPAIRS WINDOW & DOORS KITCHENS & BATHS SIDING DECKS GUTTERS SMALL EXTERIOR REPAIRS

30 55+ Know the Signs Stroke indicators are specific, so learn them and remain vigilant. Look for a sudden inability to speak coherently and weakness or numbness in a leg, arm, or face — in particular on only one side. The National Institutes on Aging also recommends monitoring for sudden vision problems, or a severe headache that happens for unknown reasons. If you have these symptoms, immediately call 911. Time is of the essence. The faster lifesaving help arrives, the lesser the stroke’s impact and the greater your chances of recovery. Family History Genetics can play a role in evaluating your risk of stroke. Some people are genetically predisposed to have a stroke. The same is true of some forms of heart disease and sickle-cell issues. Familiarize yourself with your personal family history to better understand your risks. Letting your doctor or health care provider know about family history can help in developing a health care plan that maintains good health. Watch Your Diet What you eat and drink plays a role in determining the risk of stroke. Depending on how active you are, doctors generally recommend consumption of 1,500 to 2,000 calories a day. Your individual body-mass index may also play a role in this number. Monitor what and how much you’re eating. You should reduce salt intake and avoid saturated fats. Four to five cups of fruits and vegetables are recommended daily. Also, be sure to check your alcohol intake. Be Safe Don’t go out on a date without doing a simple internet search of your potential partner or ask a tech-savvy family member or friend to help. Beware if someone asks you for money, particularly early on. These “sudden” personal issues are often scams. If you use a dating app, avoid profiles that only have one picture and no biographical information. Don’t give out your phone number to people on the internet. Celebrate the Cape BY CHRIS BEAKEY

The Lewes Lighthouse in the Cape Henlopen State Park at sunset. 55+ 37 Wise people will often tell you that taking time to express gratitude can be a significant factor in a happy life. That might be a lot easier if you live in the Cape Region, where a brisk walk on the beach is just a short drive away. My favorite times are in what folks used to call the “off-season” — those months when you can stroll across vast stretches of sand with an endless view of ocean and sky. As a retiree with a very active lifestyle, I’ve found it’s one of the best ways to calm my mind while also giving myself space to think about everything I’ve become thankful for during the two decades I’ve lived in Lewes. Here are a few wonderful things that never get old. Continued on page 38

38 55+ Natural Spaces are Never Far Away When I’m not writing in my home or office in downtown Lewes, I spend a lot of my time driving for my volunteer job. Year round, that means ample time in traffic. It’s frustrating enough, but even more so when you feel more and more hemmed in by the explosive development that’s transforming farms and forests into shiny new neighborhoods. The good news is that you never have to go too far to experience beautiful open spaces – many of which are going to be protected forever thanks to the vision of so many great people. Cape Henlopen State Park is one of the most prominent examples. It has miles of beach and trails for biking and hiking that offer views of marshlands and pine forests. Like many people, I especially love walking around “The Point” — a threemile stretch that takes you from views of breaking ocean waves to the calmer waters of Delaware Bay. It’s easy to get to – just follow the signs from the entrance to the park in Lewes. Park your car at a lot and walk down through big picturesque dunes to begin your journey. The Point is just one feature of the park, which encompasses more than 5,000 acres of land that will remain free of major development thanks to legislation recently signed by Governor Carney. Year round you can ride your bike from one end of the other — from Lewes to Rehoboth — on those magnificent trails where you won’t see any houses or commercial enterprises. You’ll have similar experiences in the Broadkill area farther north up the coast, with many more miles of bayside beach and vistas of marshlands that seem to go on forever. South of Rehoboth there’s another gorgeous stretch of highway bordered by water on both sides that’ll take you across the Indian River bridge to Bethany. It’s all there for you year-round, and is especially calming during the fall, winter, and spring months. We Love Our Festivals We do love our festivals with so many to enjoy. Most recent was the History Book Festival, which brought fascinating storytellers to Lewes for three days of insightful discussions of our past and present world. Coming up is the Sea Witch Festival – offering three days of Halloweenthemed fun in downtown Rehoboth. Over the next few weeks, we’ll have some of the world’s best loved musicians and vocalists at the Rehoboth Jazz Fest and True Blue Jazz Fest, followed by all kinds of fascinating cinema at the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival. Don’t forget the annual Greyhounds at the Beach in October. While it’s not exactly a festival, hundreds of greyhound lovers spend the weekend enjoying their canine pals. In December, Lewes celebrates with its famed Christmas Parade and also opens their doors to some of the most beautiful homes for the annual Holiday Tour of Lewes. That won’t happen here. There are eight tennis courts open to the public at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes, and a handful of places where you can play pickleball. Dave Marshall Tennis & Fitness also offers ample tennis and pickleball court time indoors year-round, as well as pool memberships in the summer. If biking is your thing, there are miles of trails you can take from Lewes to Rehoboth to Georgetown. Check out the organized activities through the Sussex Cyclists website for more information. If you’re part of the 55+ crowd you can also gain flexibility, balance, and mental composure through sessions at Dimitra and Rehoboth Beach Yoga, Right Balance Pilates, and Sea Barre Fitness. Regardless of your age or ability you can enjoy vibrant low-cost gyms like Every One Fitness, the YMCA, and Rise – which also has an amazing program for folks dealing with Parkinson’s disease. Making Life Better for Others You may or may not have had a lot of time to volunteer when you were working fulltime and/or raising a family. But now that you have more freedom, there are many ways to make life better for your community. Sign up with Village Volunteers if you’d like to spend time taking care of seniors, or organizations like Lewes In Bloom if you enjoy bringing color and life to public spaces, or Delaware State Parks if you’d like more social time outdoors. There is a comprehensive list of ways to stay active and strengthen our community by visiting capegazette.com and searching for “Volunteer Opportunities.” These are just a few reasons to celebrate your new – or continuing – lifestyle in and around the beach while ramping up your gratitude for all that the Cape Region has to offer. 44 55+ Improving Your Health With Yoga Join millions of seniors who are already participating in yoga — an activity with so many positive health impacts, yet is low impact and easy on the joints. You’ll improve your flexibility, balance, and mobility while also building aerobic fitness and muscle strength. Another benefit? Finding a new community of potential friends. Many Benefits Older adults who practice yoga have a reduced risk of falling, with a proven track record of better stability. Greater flexibility and improved joint health from practicing yoga have also been linked to reducing symptoms of osteoarthritis. Yoga participants traditionally have reported better respiratory health, lower blood pressure, improved mindfulness, reduced anxiety, and needed relaxation. As you continue to practice yoga, you may find that you have better posture, better digestion — since yoga stimulates muscles in the core — and better pain management. It’s also not a huge commitment of time or money. As little as 10 minutes a day has been shown to help with bone density. 46 55+ a live instructor, rather than watching videos. Done incorrectly, yoga can lead to injury so working directly with an instructor can quickly fix any mistakes. Seniors, also be aware of your natural limits. Avoid inversions that place your head below your heart, and forward bends with legs straightened. Limit twists to the midrange, while avoiding extremes of movement. When deciding on a yoga studio, look for instructors who have been certified by Yoga for Seniors. They’ll know more about tailoring movements to your special needs. If your breathing becomes labored, reposition yourself and rest until your breathing returns to normal. Take breaks as needed. Talk to your instructor who knows how to move you into more challenging poses as you are ready. Best Poses Some specific poses are particularly good for seniors, so ask your instructor about the mountain pose, the tree pose, or the cobra pose. Seniors with a mobility impairment, anyone under doctor’s restrictions, or concerned about your physical condition can explore chair yoga. Be sure you have a comfortable, sturdy chair without wheels. After warmups, you’ll be led through specifically designed flexibility and strength-building sessions before participating in a modified cool-down period. If done correctly, Healthline reports that chair yoga is just as beneficial as regular yoga classes. It’s especially helpful for those with balance or joint issues, menopause or arthritis. 48 55+ Scam Artists Seniors are particularly vulnerable when it comes to healthcare fraud, funeral scams, and counterfeit prescriptions. Here’s how to avoid becoming the next victim, and what to do if you or someone you love unwittingly falls for one of these scams. Healthcare Fraud All American seniors are eligible for Medicare and information about this federally-backed insurance program is available to anyone. That means it’s easy for someone to sound like a knowledgeable Medicare “representative” on the phone or through electronic communication – even when they’re not. The National Council on Aging reminds seniors to beware of anyone seeking their personal information. Ask for their official credentials, then hang up the phone and call the agency to confirm their identity. Funeral Scams The Federal Trade Commission has noted an uptick in scams involving more expensive caskets, embalming, or funeral package deals. Scammers may suggest that these options are required by law, which is not true. For example, you are not required to embalm the deceased unless certain timeframe requirements for cremation or burial haven’t been met.
