Vintage LUXE Reimagining one-of-a-kind gifts and home decor up | W22 13
Q + A David Altman Introduce yourself... David Altman, Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Vintage Luxe Up, the world’s finest collection of luxury vintage scarves reimagined into one-of-akind gifts & home decor. In just over 2 years we have built a sustainable luxury brand with a strong equestrian appeal from coast to coast. How did you get started down this path… At the beginning of the pandemic, I was gifted a pillow made from 2 vintage Hermès scarves. My chocolate Labrador, Annabelle liked the pillow a little more than I did and chewed the edges off. Instead of throwing the pillow away, I reimagined the silk into something that was quickly becoming a necessity – face masks. With a long history of working with luxury brands and retailers, I know a trend when I see one. We hit a chord with the consumer – and I started scouring the global market for these wonderful works of art. I launched Vintage Luxe Up in the Spring of 2020 with masks, then expanded into home décor and gifts. Initially, making the masks was a way to bring a little joy to an otherwise terrible time. If you had to wear a mask it might as well be a one-of-a-kind item. I also think that people liked them because they were wildly impractical. Our upcycled luxury masks were a huge hit. Word spread quickly and the first collection sold out with the proceeds benefitting Covid-19 Relief Funds. Our collection now includes decorative pillows, framed scarves and gift accessories, wristlet bags and home fragrance items. Bestsellers are silk pillows finished with beautiful details including fringe and leather. Prices range from $200 to $2,400 depending upon the rarity and value of the silk. Some scarves have been made into framed works of art, silk wristlet bags $228), Coffee Run© key chain pouches ($98) and lavender clothing sachets ($88). You’ve mentioned that Vintage Luxe Up is sustainably sourced, with a history and story to be told, what exactly does that mean to customers? Leveraging my deep expertise in luxury goods coming off a decades-long career at Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdale’s, this has become a passion project for me. I personally scout the global market looking for unique, rare, and meaningful examples of the art of scarf-making. A global-citizen, I’ve spent my life traveling the near and far, discovering the world’s most unique treasures for the luxury client. By using vintage scarves, we give these works of art a new life – conserving earth’s scarce resources, | S20 14 showcase | W22 14
reducing waste and impact on the planet. Hermès has been making scarves since 1937 – recognized worldwide as both coveted and collectible. Unique in that each scarf has an individual designer behind it. We can trace the design back to a particular year and a designer. They can take up to 18 months to develop the scarf from start to finish and can include more than 27 distinct colors. The artistry and craftsmanship are unmatched. We reimagine vintage scarves from Hermès, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Chanel, and Ralph Lauren. We also give back to charity – 10% of all online sales are donated to charities including COVID19 Relief, Children’s, and Breast Cancer foundations. As a local Lexington brand, we also partner with the University of Kentucky on an internship program. You talk a lot about storytelling – what does that mean? As human’s we’re less motivated by facts and figures than we are about real stories about real people. There’s a deep emotional attachment to these scarves – both on the creative side – with how and why they’re made, but also around how a customer came to acquire it – bought it on my 1st trip to Paris – bought it with my 1st big paycheck – gift on the birth of a child – there’s always a story. Where are you located? We’re based in Lexington, Kentucky. Hermès is an equestrian brand, founded in 1837 as a harness and bridle workshop. As our products have an equestrian vibe, I thought it would be fantastic and relevant to have our products handmade in Lexington, the equestrian capital of the world. photo Mackenzie Clark | S20 15 | W22 | W21 15 15
What do you mean by at Vintage Luxe Up the answer is always yes? In addition to our collection, we have the unique capability to work hand-in-hand with clients and their interior designers to create bespoke pieces that complement one’s lifestyle and home decor, many with an equestrian flavor. From start to finish, we deliver in just a matter of weeks. Can a customer send you their own scarves? Through our Private Reserve Collection program customers can give new life to a cherished heirloom while supporting their favorite charity. The client receives a free item made from their donated scarf and 10% of the proceeds from the rest of the items benefit the charity of their choice. This project for me is really a labor of love. We acquire a great deal of silks from customers who say, “I love it but I’m not using it.” We will make something out of it, and you get to choose which charity you donate to while keeping a memento that has been upcycled into a usable item. Non-Affiliation Trademark Disclaimer Exclusively ours, all items are sourced and altered from independently authenticated secondary market sources to preserve their beauty while reducing waste and its impact on the planet. Each piece is unique and one-ofa-kind, handmade in our familyowned ateliers. As Chief Creative Officer, I personally select each scarf – it’s a treasure hunt. Never know what I’ll find, can search for a design for months or may never find it – which is part of the fun of it. I work side-by-side with our ateliers to select the coordinating fabric or frame molding that brings out the design. Once created, the design will never be duplicated so the client is getting a true unique piece. Where can I find the collection? Available online at VintageLuxeUp.com and select specialty home décor shops nationwide.

showcase Q&A With designer Chloe Gosselin As a fashion designer we were surprised to find out you lived in Las Vegas, would you like to expand on that? Nowadays you don't have to live in New York, Milan or Paris to be a designer. There is so much beauty in that idea, Fashion is infused with culture and expanded horizons.. As a french girl, Las Vegas was culturally brutal at first but when I looked outside the City towards the beauty of the mountains and landscapes I started to love it. I moved there from New York because of my partner's work. As much as I miss the creativity of the city,I am content while I ride my horse or hike Red Rock with my 2 dogs Orson and Rosie. It would be difficult to have this proximity to nature in New York. Now for the good stuff, tell us a little bit about your equestrian endeavors. We were thrilled to find out you are an avid rider and have a horse of your own. I started to ride when I was 6 years old in France. I never had the money to own my own horse so I would be in pony clubs and would clean stables for free lessons. In France you learn about every discipline but we are big on jumping so of course that is what I did. But I always had a passion for Dressage. I would go watch the Royal Andalusian and Vienna schools or the Cadre Noir perform, I was mesmerized by the dancing horses. I stopped riding in my teens and rode sporadically in my twenties. When my friend Shania Twain brought her show to Las Vegas with horses in 2012, she had this incredible understudy Andalusian that I renamed Milo. I would go ride him daily before the show and when her residency ended and for my 30th birthday my partner surprised me with Milo. I decided then that I will always have horses in my life and live this childhood dream fully. I now have an incredible KWPN Grand Prix school master named Arie that has been teaching me so much. You are a celebrity ambassador for the American Wild Horse Campaign. We too are advocates and supporters. Tell everyone how you became involved and how they can become involved as well. We’d love to get the word out. As a french girl I had this dreamy image of wild horses in the West. When I moved to Las Vegas, I researched how to witness their beauty in their natural habitat and came across the American Wild Horse Campaign and their message. I was sad to learn that these symbols of American wilderness are treated as disposables by a government institution and at taxpayer expense. I really invite you to check their website and get involved, there are so many ways you can help. The most important one is to get educated on the issue and share it with people, most have no idea that this is even happening, e ntire herds are rounded up by helicopters, separated from their family often ending up in adoption programs that often lead to slaughter. It is heartbreaking. Tell us a little bit about how you embarked on this design career? Why shoes? I've always had a passion for shoes for as long as I can remember. My mother would buy me these patent ballerinas as a kid and they were my obsession. I also sketched shoes at a very young age as I always expressed myself through drawing and painting. I ended up going to Art School for fine Arts in Belgium and simultaneously embarked on a modelling career which took me around the World. Shoes always felt like the perfect bridge between Art and Fashion to me, like wearable Sculptures that change the way you walk, stand and carry yourself. After 10 years in the modeling industry and the birth of my daughter Sky I went back to school in New York to learn about shoemaking and production. Soon after I designed my first collection, I packed my bags and went to Italy and knocked on all the doors from factories to suppliers. I launched the Chloe Gosselin brand during New York fashion week in February 2014. Riding boots. The question everyone wants us to ask. Which boot or boots do you prefer to ride in? More importantly, can we expect a super fashionable riding boot from you in the future? I am definitely a Deniro girl. Loyal to the italian craftsmanship their boots are incredibly well made and comfortable. My favorite style is the Raffaelo. I don't have a riding boot coming up yet but if Deniro wants to do a collab I would love love to do it. Just throwing this out there... ;) -- @freewildhorses | W22 26

Zuza Isham Born and raised in Europe Zuza Isham’s adventurous and curious nature took her far from home where she now lives a peaceful life on a little historic cattle ranch in Texas with her cowboy husband Chad. Blue skies and neverending pairies became her source for inspiration. There in her hideout, she wears many hats and let’s her heart hold the reins. Tell us about you and your husband and how you ended up in Texas ? I wanted to discover a land that doesn’t feel like Europe. It was spontaneous. I applied for a temporary job in the U.S. and accepted the first offer from Texas. The ‘cowboy country’ is definitely a fascinating choice for someone who only knows it from the movies. During my journey through the Wild West I met Chad (on Instagram!) and once we started corresponding with each other, we quickly discovered we have a lot in common. I decided to date him every weekend, by literally jumping on the train to Fort Worth. Chad waited at the station in his tall cowboy hat and it was love at first sight. He drove me out to the middle of nowhere and that’s where I knew I belonged. I found my home in another person and naturally soon after Texas became my slice of heaven. Anyone who follows @oldgoldritual on instagram recognizes the work that goes into your content. What inspired you to start the platform? What is the origin of the name? I love my life and to make it more magical I decided to transform every chore into pleasure. For me ‘a ritual’ is an activity to which I devote my attention and time daily. I believe that the moment we begin our rituals, we tune the body to our soul. We start appreciating the presence. We calm down. We feel well taken care of. Connection with self created by rituals allows us to accept who we really are. The ‘old gold ritual’ for me personally means living at a slower pace and finding treasure in the little things. Where do you find such amazing leather pieces? Talking about gold, me and my husband created some golden rules for our lifestyle and business. We only sell vintage and handmade leather goods that are timeless and made to last, as an alternative to the ‘throw away’ mass fashion industry. We like to work with natural materials and a color palette inspired by the beauty of a Western landscape. Most of our finds are picked up during our road trips or come from the mass collection that Chad has acquired over the past 30 years. We have a personal connection with everything we sell. These are special things that you will love, need and probably pass down for generations to come. What is your fashion background? I have worked in the fashion industry since I turned 18. My first job was dressing models for the runway during fashion shows. Meanwhile I was studying costume design and cultural anthropology. Both of these fields expanded my imagination and led me to become an editor for ELLE Poland. Today I merge my passions together and express myself through writing, styling and photography. I escaped from the city splendor and found a luxury in the rawness of an everyday ranch life. I spent half of my childhood in the Polish countryside, so having a barn in my backyard and being outside from dusk till dawn brings me the greatest fulfillment. Would you consider yourself a horse girl? Yes, that crazy one that scares men away. Luckily I married a cowboy and he fully understands what I am about. feature TREGOS WESTWEAR VINTAGE jackets 70s Chaps Velvet Coral Concho Blouse DOUBLE D RANCH Hat AMERICAN HAT CO Bracelet BROKEN ARROW JEWELRY | W22 37

A Modern Equestrian Brand LARA TWEEDIE What inspired you to launch Laratweedie.com.au? We are based on the Mornington Peninsula in Melbourne, Australia and I was acutely aware of the lack of choice riders had when shopping for quality tack in our local area. My vision was to design and produce beautiful and functional bridles that riders could purchase off the rack so to speak. I’ve always wanted to sell a bridle that was sold complete with a gorgeous brow band, a bridle bag and reins a dressage rider actually wanted to use. It has been incredibly rewarding to develop and grow the range and I know the best is yet to come. Tell us about the brand I’m really proud that we are a female led, Australian based business. My great passion is working with top dressage riders and I always tell the riders, “You can’t offend me when it comes to product feedback”. I began my career as an equine veterinarian and it was during these early working years that I honed my capacity for self-assessment. There is never a day that I don’t want to make the product better and the working relationships I have built over the last 3 years have been one of the joys of my working life. Catherine Haddad-Staller has been a constant source of inspiration and an incredible sounding board. I will always credit Catherine coming into my life as a turning point for the business. I now also have the pleasure of working with Kathleen Raine, David Wightman and Alyssa Doverspike of Adventure Farms in Southern California. Outside of the USA the brand works with Abi Lyle in the UK, Bennett Conn in Germany as well as Holly Cutler and Lizzie Wilson Fellows here in Australia. What separates Lara Tweedie from other equestrian brands? I would say the biggest difference is that we are a direct to consumer brand and this means any production we do is very carefully considered. Our bridles are manufactured in smaller quantities and this allows us to maintain the quality of the product and provide incredible after sales service to our customers. From time to time we do produce textiles collections but the idea of producing collection after collection just to push into stores doesn’t sit that well with me. Instead my brand produces a range of high quality, core competition products and from time to time we drop a unique collection. Our latest collection is the gingham collection and next time we will do something completely different. That’s the challenge I’m setting for myself as an equestrian designer. Keep evolving, don’t repeat and don’t over produce. Keep it fresh and continue to show riders reimagined products that are worth being excited about. Where can we find the brand here in the US? Right now US based riders can shop with us direct on our laratweedie.com website. We ship to the US on a daily basis and it has been a lot of fun developing this market. Our US customers are great! Broader distribution in the US is part of our strategic plan so keep an eye out for the brand in US stores really soon. After building our business in Australia and New Zealand on a direct to consumer model, partnering with the best retailers is highly important to us. We want to ensure our customers in the US have the same experience shopping with our retail partners as they would if they shopped with us direct. Stay tuned! SHOP LARA TWEEDIE laratweedie.com Follow Lara@lara_tweedie feature Lara Tweedie, started her brand out of necessity and the desire for a RTW bridle that not only encompassed the entricate and beautiful dressage aesthetic but proved to be comfortable as well.
