I started riding when I was 8 and never stopped. I grew up in Hamburg, Germany, and Mastered in Communication Design and Marketing and became an Art Director immediately afer graduation for an internal magazine of the MCA Music Group. That position jump-started my career. Over the years I have worked as a Creative Director for many national and international brands. Currently, I live in Fort Worth, Texas and travel between Europe and the USA. If I’m not designing I train and compete in dressage. When UNIQCORN Exceptionnel launched in 2007 in Hamburg, Germany, it quickly became the bespoke brand of choice offering equestrians custom-made breeches of unrivaled quality. Why breeches specifically? My design background includes product design and fashion illustration. My first collection was born from a fashion concept, inspired by the various looks I’ve seen at my first National Horse Show. I believe in “form follows function”, but the result has to be comfortable, and stylish, so I deconstructed riding breeches and jods, re-envisioned the design, and added classic fashion elements. I designed the pant legs ergonomically to minimize creasing at the knee, reshaped the leather seat for a flattering and slimming silhouette, and developed a patented leather insert for the jodhpur leg opening that made elastic foot straps unnecessary and visually lengthened the leg in the saddle. Finally, I sourced the best fabrics, yarns, and leather. The collection became an over- night sensation, and Uniqcorn Exceptionnel was born. Recently, you took the brand in a newer direction relaunching in 2022 a ready-to-wear capsule collection UNIQCORN Revive. What inspired you to go RTW? I had to think about it for a while how I could make the brand more accessible without compromising the quality. What I found exciting is the translation of the brand’s core values to become revived in a collection of essential statement pieces which can be worn many seasons. UNIQCORN embodies a timeless approach to luxury performance clothes, true to our guiding principle “dare to be exceptional” – thriving for excellence, pushing boundaries, and being unique in everything we create. Ashley Mailoux Former Project Lead, 1/ST RACING/Gulfstream Park. Statistician. What are the basics of betting (from a personal perspective) and how can everyone be part of the excitement? It’s easy for anyone to be part of the excitement – all you need to do is pick a horse and grab a couple of dollars! Betting can be as simple or as difficult as one would like – you can play a horse based on its name or your favorite number, or you can look at a program and learn how to “handicap” the races. The program, or using a mobile betting tool like the 1/ST BET app provides those wagering with an overview of each horse and their connections. Tell us about the 1/ST BET app. Is it easy is to use? The 1/ST BET App is a way to play the races “on the go.” It’s easy to sign up – once you make an account, you can fund it using several different options such as bank transfer, credit card and even Venmo. From there, you can pick the track, the race, and then select your bet. One of the many great features of using the 1/ST BET App is the ability to use artificial intelligence factors before placing a bet. Struggling to select a horse? The AI betting selections find contenders ranked top to bottom based on the top 10-most successful past factors in similar races. What is the most important aspect to focus on when betting? I think the odds are the most important aspect to focus on when betting. They change based on what those wagering think about each horse. If the betting public really feels that a specific horse is going to win, typically the odds are “shorter” because the horse is what we call a favorite. With that in mind, that means the payoff if you win is usually less. On the other side, if you see a horse with big odds, that means the betting public thinks the horse has a small chance of winning which usually means a big pay day! It’s all about finding a horse at a price you like. How easy it is to place and cheer on your fav? It’s very easy to place a bet and cheer on your horse. If you’re enjoying a day at the races, which I recommend you do at one of 1/ST’s amazing venues, you can find a betting window and tell the clerk how much you’d like to bet on what horse, and more specifically what type of wager! You BETCHA! How can you have fun without being a pro yourself? You don’t have to “break the bank” when spending a day at the races. From a betting perspective, one of my favorite things to do with my friends when they’re at the track for the first time is to play a show parlay. Everyone chips in a few dollars and each race, one person in the group picks a horse to show. As long as the horse finishes in the top three (which is what it means to show), the parlay continues and we take all of the money we won in the previous race and bet it on a horse to show in the next race. If we make it through the races, we split the winnings! It can be a little daunting going up to a window to bet, what are your tips for going for it? While the windows can seem overwhelming, don’t be alarmed. I suggest trying to find a clerk with no line (when possible). Typically, right before a race, it’s fast paced but if you go ten minutes before and ask for assistance, clerks are happy to help you through the process without rushing you. It’s always ok to say “I’m new to horse racing!” and to ask for help. The easiest way to place a bet is to specify how much you’d like to spend, the wager type, and the horse(s) you’re feature
