60 MASTERPIECE ONLINE AUCTION

For Popo, the artistic process is no different from the cultural process, that is, it
is a long process of study. Every painting is like a reflection. It is an integral part
of every one of Popo’s efforts of the past, the present and the future. One of
Popo’s works is not a record of what he has seen, but rather an interpretation
of what he has observed through subject matter. Popo’s repetitive themes are
not merely duplicates his ideas, but an accumulation of his endless exploration
towards his rich experiences. The source of his idea of cats is not the form
of the cat, but rather its involvement in various situations and conditions
which stimulate his ideas and imaginations. Repetitive theme of cats, chickens
and leopards probably has become Popo Iskandar’s main contemplation in
reflecting the essence of cats, nudity or even mystery of nature

MASTERPIECE ONLINE AUCTION 97

Handrio

Handrio was born in 1926 in Purwakarta. He started his painting career by studying with
Basuki Abdullah. Furthermore, during the Japanese period, he studied with Sudjojono and
Agus Djaja at Keimin Bunka Shidoso and Poetera in Jakarta. At first, Handrio’s paintings were
in the style of realism and Surrealism. In the 1950s Handrio has shifted to a semi-abstract
style, which is analytically breaking down shapes in the geometric plane. This style was a
different expression from theYogyakarta painters at that time who generally painted populist
themes from realism to expressionism and decorative styles. In this semi-abstract style, he
analyzes many forms of still life objects and musical instruments. In its development in the late
1960s, these forms disappeared into dynamic and complex geometric spaces. The peak of
Handrio’s abstract style achievement occurred in the 1980s.The space, field, and color in his
paintings represent the characterization of the construction of the elements themselves. In
this expression, what is present is dynamics, rhythm, complexity, robustness, balance, or other
images.
