Spring Cleaning Gone Wrong
What a way to spend my Sunday off—cleaning! It is not like I get a lot of free time in the first place. Between Answering Technique
studying and trying to keep some measure of a social life, I do not exactly have time to do housework. (1) C . It and Answering Review
has been a few months since the kitchen has had some heavy-duty cleaning, but for the last few days, my mother
has been pestering me to clean up the kitchen for Christmas.
Well, looks like today is the day to clean it with my sister! Armed with brooms, gloves and an all-purpose
cleaner, we started our clean-up. It is hot. Sweaty and humid. The kitchen is bright enough with natural lighting.
(2) E . As I start cleaning the pantries, I notice dust mites and mould everywhere. Gosh, it is hot. As I get
further into these pantries, sweat starts to form on the back of my neck. I can feel that familiar tickle of sweat
beads starting to roll down my bare skin. (3) H . It is actually impressive, the amount of food we have bought
that ended up disappearing into those dark corners of the cupboard.
The longer my head is stuck in this wooden cave, the more I become anxious. (4) G . The air is thick. And
although I am lightheaded, I would really love nothing more than to get this over with. There is a small, dark mass
in the upper corner of the pantry that I cannot quite reach. The many boxes of cereal and plastic containers are
all just in the way at this point. (5) B . I can finally reach that corner! Jackpot. As far as I can tell, it is entirely
made of dust and mould. My sister and I use an old bath towel to collect the dust and wipe off the mould.
As I lean further into the pantry, I scrape away the mess. The wood is cracking easier than it should. There
is a small hole, maybe the size of a coin, but I can see something moving behind the opening. (6) D . In the
meantime, I am stuck trying to make out the sound. It is so familiar that I know I have heard it before. It is
squeaking and getting louder. Suddenly, a baby mouse jumps out and I squeal in fright! Everyone comes running
and we end up chasing after the mouse the whole afternoon! So much for cleaning the kitchen!

B – Nicholas, 16 years old
Spending time together outdoors is an excellent way to share quiet time as a family as well as get some exercise. I
enjoy connecting with nature with my family.1Going to a nature reserve for a walk and jungle trekking is my
favourite way to spend time together with my parents and two other younger siblings.
C – Prema, 18 years old
An old-fashioned family6vacation is just the thing to bring everyone together and make memories. Enjoying a
family vacation is my favourite way of spending time with my parents and sister. With everyone’s lives so busy, I
love getting away, just the four of us, with no school,5work or activities to get in the way.
D – Rachel, 17 years old
I find that movie night is my favourite family activity. My parents and I will gather all the pillows around the
house along with our favourite8blankets. I will pop some popcorn and all of us gather in the living room, lights
off and TV volume turned up enough to let us zone out and completely get into the movie.
E – Jessica, 16 years old
During family game night, my family and I always2find ways to help one another win. My2parents are not
one of those parents who let their kids win. In fact, they like beating us, but I have the most fun seeing their
reactions when we beat them!
F – Janice, 15 years old
Cooking as a family together and then eating the meal prepared together will lay the groundwork for kids to
prioritise family later in life. My mother and I enjoy preparing Sunday meals together.4I believe that when I
grow up, I will think fondly about cooking with mum and dad.

Student B: Hi, Amir. I think possessing strong and effective communication skills form strong and trusting (Listen with the tapescript and bold keyword)
bonds between parents and children, which can lead to a better relationship between the members
of the family. What do you think Kumar?
Student A: Yes, that is absolutely true! I am of the opinion that children of parents who allow them to freely
express their feelings, thoughts and opinions have higher self-esteem overall. This is because
they are raised in an environment where their thoughts and opinions are valued and recognised.
Therefore, they won’t be shy to express themselves.
Student B: I totally agree with you! Effective communication skills make family members become respectful,
open, honest and kind towards one another.
Student A: You have hit the nail on its head! What admirable quality would you like in a family member?
Student B: Well, I am of the opinion that learning how to effectively express feelings can reduce the arguing
and yelling in a household as well as increase satisfaction and the sharing of feelings. When a family
knows how to communicate effectively, then all of the members of the household learn how to solve
problems together in addition to the sharing of thoughts and ideas.

5W1H Technique to guide students to create better conversation Candidate B Now, talk to each other about the challenges of having an adopted child.
Candidate A (What is the first challenge?) (Why do you say so?) Firstly, I believe that a sense of abandonment
is a major challenge. An adopted child would probably have questions like, “How could my family
Candidate B leave me?” Do you agree with me Candidate B?
Candidate A (What about the next point?) (What do you mean by identity issues?) Yes, that’s an interesting
perspective. However, I believe we can also consider identity issues. “Who am I?” and “Why am
Candidate B I here?” are often types of questions teenagers ask themselves.
Candidate A (Do you agree or disagree?) (Why?) (What about feeling of not belonging?) (What is the reason?)
Candidate B (What about difficulties of attachment?) Yes, I see your point. The next point is feeling of not
belonging. The adoptive child may look for similarities and differences with their adoptive
parents. Additionally, these kids might have attachment issues, some children who have just lost
their birth parents are asked to attach to a new set of parents, which can be extremely hard to do.
(What is your view?) (Why?) (What are they?) I’m sorry but I don’t quite agree with you. I think
this issue can be solved. I think patience and love will help this attachment process.
(Do you agree or disagree?) (What about trauma issues?) (Why?) I agree. Parents must allow the
process to take however long is necessary. I do think trauma issues is another challenge. Many
adopted children have experienced much hardship in the past probably as a result of abuse,
neglect, abandonment or a significant loss.
(Do you agree or disagree?) (What about perception of others?) (Why?) I agree. That’s why it
is important that adoptive parents help them cope with it. As for the last point, perception of
others, there are still some people who question the validity or the purpose of adopting. People
may have questions like, “Shouldn’t she be adopted by parents of the same colour?” or “You
already have your own kids, why adopt?”.
(Do you agree or disagree?) (Why?) I’m sorry, but I beg to differ. I think most people have a
positive view of adoption and are grateful to those who adopt a child or teenager in need.
(What do you feel?) After all said and done, I feel adoption is an amazing thing. To wrap up
our discussion, I can say that both of us agree that there are indeed many challenges faced by
adoptive parents and children but I believe they can get through them.

A Poison Tree
Based on the poem, ‘A Poison Tree’, answer the questions below.
I was angry with my friend; A Poison Tree
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe; And it grew both day and night,
I told it not, my wrath did grow. Till it bore an apple bright;
And my foe beheld it shine,
And he knew that it was mine,
And I watered it in fears, And into my garden stole
Night and morning with my tears; When the night had veiled the pole:
And I sunned it with smiles In the morning glad I see
And with soft deceitful wiles. My foe outstretched beneath the tree.

A genre.
(up to 1 (What is the movie genre?) (Why did you choose that movie genre?) (What did you experience

mystery and horror movies. To me, it’s all about the enjoyment and adrenaline rush that come
from watching movies about haunted houses or serial killers. Moreover, the thrill of solving the
mystery is indescribable! To me, watching these movies not only stimulates my brain but is also
beneficial for my health and well-being. To illustrate, when I watched the movie Scream, I could
feel my heart rate, blood pressure and breathing increase and blood rushing to my brains, which
proved to be a good workout! Besides that, I particularly enjoy a popular horror film technique,
which is to mimic dangerous, natural sounds that automatically signify danger like The Exorcist,
with its mixed recordings of angry bees and people screaming. Finally, this genre is special to me
as it’s not just a time for me to freak out by myself but to hold on to someone while I shriek in fear
is part of the experience. In that sense, horror movies are good time to bond with my family and
friends.
Teacher Thank you. (Candidate B), can you tell me about a memorable movie?
Candidate (What was the movie?) (How did you feel?) The most memorable movie would be Murder on

Now, talk to each other about what makes a good movie? You may start if you are ready.
Candidate A (What is the first aspect?) (Why do you say so?) To begin with, I believe a good story makes a
good movie. It must be able to attract and connect to a large audience. For example, in the Disney
animation Moana, it showed us to respect our elders and focus on our goals.

innovation is another important aspect to consider. Many great movies with excellent editing,
good camera work and creative decisions are always remembered. For example, in Avatar, it used

creative and innovative touch. What do you think?
Candidate A (Do you agree or disagree?) (Why?) (What about casting?) (What is the reason?) Yes, I see your

and music. A movie with meaningful and catchy music is able to play with the emotions of the
viewers. For instance, the song My Heart Will Go On from Titanic, has proven to engage and evoke
emotional responses from the audiences which in turn increased the film’s fame and fortune.
Candidate A (Do you agree or disagree?) (What about graphic design?) (Why?) I’m sorry, I beg to differ as I
feel sound and music doesn’t affect the quality of a movie. Instead, graphic design is another
important factor that affects the success of a movie. Good graphic design extends to even the
smallest details—like the newspaper an actor reads during a scene all of which must match the
genre and historical period in which the story is set.
Candidate B (Do you agree or disagree?) (Why?) Indeed, you have a very strong point there, a good historical or
classic movie setting should have precise things like historically accurate buildings, transportation
and wardrobe.
Candidate A (Do you agree or disagree?) (Why?) Yes, all things considered, these elements are indeed
important to make a good movie. However, I believe the most important element that makes a

Your teacher has asked you to write a story for your school online magazine. The story must begin with the following
words:
It was a sunny day, Jeya and Azmah were discussing …
In your story, you must:
• describe a haunted school building
• talk about what happened in the school building
Write your story in 200 – 250 words in an appropriate style.
Pre-Writing
You may use the guide given below or your own ideas to complete the pre-writing.
(A) Beginning of Story Unit 2
How to hook your reader’s attention? There is no specific formula for this. The following questions may help
you to determine what the hook is. Writing (Guided Practice Level 1)
• Your character(s) can’t be perfect. (Writing Template + 5W1H Guide & Helping Word)
• Where did your story take place?
• What sentence or fact makes people sit up and take notice of your story?
• What is the audience going to care about the most, or be most interested in or shocked by?
Example
Lightning flashed and Kumar saw the outline of trees bending in the wind as he drove towards the old school
building. Kumar planned to enter the old school building all by himself tonight. He parked his car at the front gate.
Practice 1(a) Now it’s your turn to write
It was a sunny day, Jeya and Azmah were discussing their holiday plans. Azmah, suggested they trek up the
hill leading to an old haunted school building. It is said that Japanese soldiers were tortured there during the
Japanese occupation. Jeya was not happy about the idea, but went along with it.
(B) Middle Events
• What was the event leading up to the conflict?
• How did the character try to accomplish his/her goal?
• To make your story more interesting, include 2–3 challenges the character faced as he/she moved on to the
exciting part of your story. This builds up the tension in the plot before you state what happened.
Example
The school building was empty, dark and abandoned. Kumar walked through the rusted gate towards the
entrance, the tall and grey windows seemed to look down on him like eyes. In an ironic twist, as the rain began
to hit him over the head, Kumar decided to run into the building to seek shelter.
Practice 1(b) Now it’s your turn to write
Early the next morning, armed with torchlights, they started their trek up the hill. Jeya pushed open the front
gate which creaked loudly. The decaying building looked dilapidated and haunted. A cold shiver ran down her
spine as she followed Azmah into the building.

He walked around the building and was glad that there was no sign of a ghost. Suddenly, he felt a gust of wind.
Feeling scared, he rushed towards the door, but before he could reach it, the ghost of the school’s old principal,
believed to be beheaded during the Japanese occupation was hovering in the air.
Practice 1(c) Now it’s your turn to write
Suddenly, Jeya thought she heard someone behind her but saw nothing. Jeya started climbing the stairs, when
she was certain she felt a shadow pass her. Suddenly, she felt something grab her neck, and she saw a pair of
gleaming green eyes staring back at her. Jeya screamed for Azmah and started to run.
Unit 2 (D) The Ending of the Story
• What was the result of the climax? What were the character’s reactions? Was any mystery solved in the end?
• What was the solution to the problem?
Example
Kumar was frozen in fear. He almost tripped and fall as it started hovering towards him. Kumar ran as fast as he
could. Luckily, he managed to reach the school gate just as the ghost grabbed his arm. His heart was pounding
and his vision was hazy in the pouring rain.
Practice 1(d) Now it’s your turn to write
Jeya ran out and never looked back. She was surprised to see that the sun was setting and saw Azmah was
sitting by a big tree. Azmah said she had been waiting for Jeya the whole day. Jeya was stunned. They both
decided to go home, with Jeya still shaking terribly.
(E) Conclusion Versi Demo
• How did the story turn out?
• How was the problem solved?
• What is the moral of the story?
Example
Kumar frantically tried to get into his car. He drove home and went straight to bed after the encounter. As he

Lesson 18: Literature in Action
Practice A (L.S. 5.1.2) PL
The following are the novels studied in the literature component in English Language.
Dear Mr. Kilmer – Anne Schraff
Captain Nobody – Dean Pitchford
Sing to the Dawn – Minfong Ho
Choose any one of the novels above and answer the following question. Based on the novel you have studied, write
about the moral values you learned from the story. With close reference to the text, give reasons for your answer.
1. In the story (novel) Dear Mr. Kilmer by (author) Anne Schraff, the story is about (brief synopsis) Richard who lives in a time of turmoil and war.
Richard has a secret passion; he loves to write poetry. However, he knows no one would understand as it is considered ‘sissy stuff’ by the people in
his town. (MV 1) First of all, a moral value that I learnt was to have courage. Richard lives in fear that people would come to know about his passion.
Richard writes to Joyce Kilmer about this and is encouraged to come out and share his poems with everyone. Hence, I learnt one should have the
courage to pursue what you love and what you think is right. (MV 2) Subsequently, Richard learns to have self-confidence, he starts accepting his love
for writing poetry. He writes a tribute poem to Joyce Kilmer and it gets printed in the paper. He no longer hides his writing, instead he shares it with his
father every night. (MV3) Finally, the people in Turtle Lake town are mean to Hannah and the Schermers. Richard shows everyone the importance
of being kind-hearted. He defends Hannah and would not participate in all the hate and prejudice. As hate breeds more hate. Richard shows theVersi Demo

to stand up for himself and coming to terms with his passion and true identity plus he does not care what others think and befriends Hannah even
though she is German.
2. In the story (novel) Captain Nobody by (author) Dean Pitchford, Newt Newman and his family (brief synopsis) suffer a setback when Chris ends in a
coma and is placed in a hospital. This is the time Newt rises to the occasion and proves himself to be a real hero. Firstly, one moral values that I learnt
from the novel (MV 1) is to have courage by believing in ourself and our own abilities. Newt decides to keep wearing his costume even after Halloween
is over, as he feels that it would give him confidence and courage, but in actual fact, he realised that courage comes from within. If we learn to overcome Dear Mr.
Kilmer
our fear, not only will it set us free but it gets us closer to our goals in life. For instance, when Newt has to overcome his fear of heights to save Reggie
although he is injured in the process, he finally ends up in the hospital room next to his brother whom he wants to see so badly. (MV 2) Secondly, one
should be honest, as honesty is the best policy. Darryl Peeps should have told the truth about what happens to Chris in the first place instead of letting
Reggie Ratner take the blame and letting the harassment continue. It is important to accept responsibility for our own mistakes and never lie. (MV 3)
The third moral value seen is cooperation. Newt is helpful around the house and does not pester his parents to take him to see Chris. He understands
that it is a difficult time for his parents. He shows us that when a situation gets tough for everybody, we should try our level best to ease the burden in
every way. To sum up, Newt manages to overcome his fear to do the right thing and save Reggie, plus he also tries to make things easier for everyone
around the house as everyone has been through some horrible times. Finally, we learn that when bad things happen, we should talk about it and be Captain
Nobody
honest.
3. In the story (novel) Sing to the Dawn by (author) Minfong Ho, Dawan is (brief synopsis) a shy and timid girl who has to go through a lot of hurdles
to get to where she is and win the scholarship prize. Firstly, one moral value that I learnt from the novel (MV 1) is justice. Dawan wins the scholarship
fair and square. But because she is a girl, she is not expected to continue her studies. Her father would rather let her brother, Kwai, be the one to have
the opportunity to study in the city, which Dawan thinks is unfair, so she begins to ‘fight’ with steady determination to obtain what is rightfully hers.
Secondly, Dawan realises that she needs (MV 2) courage to achieve her dream since she is a girl. She could only rely on herself to get her father’s
approval to study in the city. She tries to visit the head monk to get his approval but he is indifferent to her plight and discourages her. Dawan is
Sing to the
frustrated but doesn’t give up even when she is told her efforts would be useless. She has to finally muster up the courage to change her father’s mind Dawn
as she is determined with her decision. (MV 3) Thirdly, we learn about the importance of diligence. Dawan realises that education is the key to making
changes towards corruption and injustice. It can also help improve one’s livelihood and break away from poverty and oppression. Hence, she believes
that with the scholarship, she can study hard and return to make a difference and improve life in the village. In conclusion, Dawan’s story taught us
Answer about fighting for justice and to have courage to chase our dreams and also to be diligent in our efforts and not depend on others to make things
happen for us.

(Middle events) Immediately, the house was plunged into darkness. I quickly looked for candles and
matches. As I lit the candles, I felt as if someone else was behind me.
(Climax) Suddenly, I heard footsteps. “Is anyone there?” I called out. Quiet. After a while, I heard the footsteps
again. In a bright flash of lightning, I saw a tall but hunched figure in front of me. At that time, I wanted to run but

into our daily routine. The speaker gave a lot of good tips to help us
contribute to saving our planet.
One of the green habits my family adopted was to conserve water.
While brushing our teeth, we would turn off the tap. We would
also1call a plumber immediately to fix any leaky faucets or pipes. We
also made it a point not to drink bottled water any more. Instead,
we have switched to filtered tap water. Not only do we save a lot of
cash, we also help2to cut down on a lot of unnecessary plastic waste.
Previously, my family used to drive everywhere but not any more. My
father now takes the bus to work while3my mother takes the train. My
siblings and I bike to school. We feel healthier and at the same time
we feel great in adopting these green habits.
Another habit that we have been adopting is the 3R concept-
reduce, reuse and recycle. This concept teaches us to manage waste
properly. We reduced waste4by making compost for our garden.
Instead of discarding our food and garden waste, we use it for the
compost. One way we practise the reuse concept is by bringing
our own reusable bags when we do grocery shopping. My family
also sends our old newspapers, magazines, cardboard and other
recyclables to the recycling centre. Earlier, we used incandescent
bulbs but decided to switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs)
as they are better for the environment. They can last 10 times longer.
Furthermore, they use at least two-thirds less energy. However,
we no longer use them as they are hard to dispose of because6they
are filled with mercury. We now use5LED bulbs as they are energy-
efficient. They do cost more than CFLs and incandescent bulbs, but
they can last around 25,000 hours compared to the 1,000 hours that
incandescent bulb lasts.

Part 3
Question 19 to 26 are based on the following passage.
Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer A, B, C or D. (Dotted underlined words are distractors.)
Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham bin Abdullah, has held a prominent role in leading Malaysia’s response to the Covid-19
pandemic. Born as Yew Ming Seong on the 21st of April 1963, he is a Malaysian public servant and endocrine
surgeon. Since March 2013, he has served as the Director-General of Health. Prior to this promotion, he served as
the Deputy Director-General of Health (Medical) since February 2008. He is also the current president of Malaysia
Medical Council (MMC), as well as a board member of the Drug for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi).
Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham or Yew Ming Seong was born in Sepang, Selangor to a poor Chinese family of Foochow
descent. Having been raised by19a single mother after his parent’s divorce, he spent most of his childhood in a
village at Sungai Pelek. Later on, they moved to San Peng Flats in Jalan Loke Yew, Kuala Lumpur. Tan Sri received
his early education in Methodist Boys’ School. He would walk to school with19his younger siblings every day.
When he was in secondary school, he was adopted by the principal of Kolej Islam Klang, who spotted his
potential and intelligence and20mainly to lessen the financial burden faced by his mother. He later continued his
pre-university education in Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah (SAS), Cheras. Then, he went on to obtain a medical doctorate
degree in 1988 and a Master in Surgery in 1994, both from the National University of Malaysia (UKM). He later
went on to undergo various training stints in Australia and also specialised in the field of endocrine surgery.
Although he is now the leading voice on health and dealing with Covid-19, the Director-General of Health had
revealed that medicine was not his first choice. In an interview with a local newspaper, he was quoted as saying
that “I wanted to be a religious officer or a mufti.” He further added, “When I was in Form 2, I started thinking
about the purpose of my existence.22I focused on religious studies to get to know myself on a deeper level and find
answers to those existential questions.”
“I took a keen interest in religious studies, but the head of the religious studies called me up and told me to read
medicine instead. He said that there were enough people studying religion but not enough studying medicine.”
23“I wanted to help people at the end of the day, and I realised that medicine was a way to do just that,” he reportedly
said.
The now endocrine surgeon had to endure a lot of challenges which came his way in order to be where he
is now. Together with his mother, he had to learn to stand on his own two feet. He also realised the need to be
resourceful and independent from young.
“When you come from nothing, you’d think it’s difficult to read medicine. But the path is open.24If you have good
results, you can do anything. It’s all up to you,” Dr Noor Hisham reportedly said. He is also an avid sportsman since
his younger days. He was a school athlete and during his university days, he played football. He enjoys scuba diving
as well as underwater photography.
A few years ago, hardly anybody knew who Dr Hisham was. Today, he has become a household name in Malaysia.
He has been called a national hero on social media and television, although what people see he does is wearing a
suit and21speaking about facts and data behind a lectern. Having emerged as the face of the country’s response to
COVID-19,25his daily calm and collected press briefings have become a must-watch every evening.
As commented by one journalist, “Every time I see Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, I feel reassured. The man has
been a tower of strength for many Malaysians in this health crisis.” He goes on to add that he is a trusted face and
the most reliable source of information and facts for the pandemic in Malaysia.

(27 to 32). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.
A Nerve-racking Day
As the names were announced one by one, Kumar’s heart seemed to beat faster. He felt as if it was amplified
throughout the school hall for all to hear.
Today, Kumar was receiving his SPM results. He practically had butterflies in his stomach. Two weeks ago,
he heard over the news that the results would be released today. Last night, he was restless the whole evening.
(27) H Even at night during bedtime, he had a difficult time falling asleep. He tossed and turned in bed the
whole night. Still, when he woke up this morning, he did not feel tired at all. (28) D He was certain this was
the reason that kept him going.
All the students were assembled in the school hall. They were seated according to their classes. At the front
part of the hall, tables and chairs had already been set up. (29) B Others, like Kumar, sat in silence. When
the class teachers started coming into the hall carrying the result slips, everyone stopped talking. The hall was
so quiet that one could have heard a pin drop. (30) F
The principal first gave a congratulatory speech and expressed her happiness that most of the students of
this year had done well. Then, she left the hall and the class teachers started calling up their students individually
to collect the result slips.
When Kumar heard his name being called, he stood up and walked over to his teacher, with tentative steps. He
tried to read the expression on his teacher’s face as an indication of how he had done but it was expressionless.
(31) C Kumar did not realise that his knuckles had turned white. At that moment, when he finally dared to
look at his teacher, she broke out into a broad smile.
“Congratulations, Kumar! You have achieved excellent results!” she smiled at him.
With trembling hands, Kumar stared blankly at the result slip being handed to him. He could not believe his
eyes. He had done better than he had expected. (32) A He finally felt as if he could breathe again.
A It was only then did he break out into a smile as well. (32)
B Some students chatted with their friends, voicing out their concerns. (29)
C He sat on a chair in front of the teacher and gripped the sides. (31)
D The anxiety of the situation kept the adrenalin rushing through his veins. (28)
E This was the life-changing moment that he had been waiting for.
F The air was filled with tension and suspense. (30)
G At that moment, he decided that this was it.
H It seemed as though nothing he did could distract him. (27)

Questions 33 to 40 are based on the following texts.
We interviewed six teenagers regarding their thoughts on top online shopping sites in Malaysia. Read the texts below
carefully and answer the questions that follow. (Dotted underlined words are distractors.)
Teens on Famous Online Shopping Sites in Malaysia
A – Kah Chun, 19 years old
I enjoy shopping online at Lazada as it33provides cheaper prices compared to shopping at other online shopping websites
and shopping malls. I feel that I get premium quality39merchandise that is worth my money. Customers get an effortless
shopping experience. For small-time retailers like me, this site offers opportunities for simple and direct access to the
largest customer base in Southeast Asia. Thus, we can get the opportunity to expand our business worldwide.
B – Prema, 17 years old
I am a great fan of Malaysia’s most visited online shopping application, Shopee. It has become a successful
e-commerce start-up since it was launched in 2015. This is due to the mobile and social elements integrated
into the platform. I enjoy using this application as it makes online shopping easy and secure for both sellers and
buyers. In order to differentiate itself, Shopee offers online shopping security through a service called “Shopee
Guarantee” where34it withholds payment to sellers until buyers have received their orders.
C – Rizal, 18 years old
I often visit Mudah.my as we can find almost anything online! You’ll find job listings, properties, used items
and even live animals! As its name suggests, this online classified marketplace is quite simple to use. Buyers
and sellers can look for advertised products according to region. When buying from individuals, it can be hard
to weed out38fraudulent sellers because they don’t have any buyer protection options. Therefore, when I buy
anything here, I always opt for cash on delivery, as I am able to40inspect the goods before making payment.
D – Mei Mei, 17 years old
If you can’t find an item on sites like Lazada or Shopee, chances are you’ll find it on eBay. Previously, eBay wasn’t
very popular in Malaysia as the shipping fees are very expensive. However, this is slowly changing now as there
are more Asian sellers who have joined the platform. They have made shipping more affordable and faster. I find
it a great platform to look for35great deals and hidden gems like antiques and unusual collectibles.
E – Priyanka, 16 years old
As a self-confessed fashion enthusiast, I love to shop online at ZALORA. It is an online fashion e-commerce
platform that aims to36bring the latest fashion to Southeast Asia customers. I love its wide selection of products
that covers every aspect of fashion from skirts to suits, shoes to slippers, sportswear to watches and beauty
products. ZALORA shoppers can shop36according to the latest trends plus the added advantage of fast shipping,
cash-on-delivery policy and free returns.
F – Sharizal, 16 years old
I feel that Lelong is the Malaysian version of eBay. I read that it is one of the most visited online37auction and shopping
websites in Malaysia. As its name suggests, Lelong offers products at reasonable prices. You have a large number of
active sellers to choose from. Founded back in 1998, it requires one to register if you want to buy or sell through this
site. Lelong has a detailed ‘How-to’ pages for help. To sell your own products on Lelong, you have to open your own
online store on the site. It also offers assistance with promoting your store and creating discount coupons.

(What did you buy for your parents’ anniversary? T-shirts) For my parents’ anniversary this year, I bought them
matching T-shirts from their favourite clothing store, Unique.
(What is your suggestion? – same item) Since my parents liked it so much, I think you should get the same
item for your parents. My parents like different colours, so I went for the same print. (How much does it cost? –

Why don’t you check out the nearest Unique store this weekend? You may be able to get the T-shirts.

Question 5
Your teacher has asked you to write a story for a school magazine. The story must have the title:
In my neighbourhood, there lived ...
Your story should include:
• a description of the mystery
• how the mystery was resolved
Write your story.
Question 3: Appropriate Online Behaviour
Sometimes, online communication can be problematic as we don’t see the person we are communicating with. We should bear in mind that communicating
online is different compared to face-to-face communication. In this article, I am going to share with you how to practise appropriate online behaviour.
You must know where you are writing and who will read your posts. This is important because online forums and domains all have their own rules. Moreover, you
are unable to see the person’s face and gestures. Before posting any information, make sure that you actually know what you are talking about. It is easy to type a negative
comment if someone’s comments or posts upset you. Let something sit for a while before replying. You will feel relieved that you didn’t react or overreact too quickly.
It is important to create and maintain a formal tone in online communication with others. A minor mistake online can have unnecessary repercussions. Avoid
flowery language, be precise and straightforward in formal communication like e-mails. For example, your subject line could state the most important information
like “Application for Primer Scholarship”. The recipient of the email would immediately know what it is about and read it without delay.
In conclusion, conveying the same message online can prove to be challenging. I hope that we can practise appropriate online behaviour by being careful at
all times. We should not be tempted to say something that we might regret later. (245 words)
Question 4: A Memorable Trip to Fraser’s Hill
by Sheena Mat Razi
I took a trip to a hill resort known as Fraser’s Hill. It is situated among the mountains of the Titiwangsa Ridge in Raub, Pahang, about 100 km away from Kuala
Lumpur. It was the year-end school holidays. It was the best time to visit Fraser’s Hill as the coolest months are from November to January.
Upon arrival, I saw old-fashioned, greystone bungalows. To my surprise, it hasn’t changed much from its days as a British colonial resort. I found it amazing
that restaurants and shops as well as a charming village are centred around a clock tower and golf course.
I took photographs of the iconic clock tower in the heart of the village after which I went birdwatching. It was the ultimate experience as it is indeed an amazing
place to spot the birds from over 270 species of migratory birds that land in Fraser’s Hill each year.
There is an eatery for casual dining which serves steamboat and barbecue fare. The restaurant has an outdoor patio that serves English afternoon teas, roast
dinners and meals by the fireplace. There is also a local food centre where you can savour the best Malaysian food. The food is excellent while the scones, cakes,
pastries and little finger sandwiches are a must-try.

Question 5:
In my neighbourhood, there lived a couple Mr and Mrs Paul, and their daughter Sara. They were my immediate neighbours. Sara used to play the piano in the
evenings. Everyone in the neighbourhood was always in praise of her as she played the piano well. Suddenly, the music stopped. The residents in the neighbourhood
didn’t hear Sara play for some time. I noticed that Sara has been missing. Many others had realised that too. But no one dared to ask Mrs Paul because nobody
wanted to look as if they were being nosy.
One day, I saw a huge lorry parked in front of her house. Some of the other neighbours were also peeping. Two men were lifting the piano onto the lorry. They
even picked up the chair. It was a mystery. Neighbours began to gossip and spread rumours about her.
After some time, I saw Sara return in a full pilot’s uniform in a van that belonged to an aviation company. Some others had noticed that too. I realised that she
had become a pilot. She told me that she had been away because she was undergoing training in aviation to become a pilot. The mystery was finally solved.
Everyone who had gossiped about her was ashamed. The piano was sold to help her pay for her training expenses. It turns out that Sara is the only female pilot.
I have learnt not to judge people without knowing the truth. (243 words)
