Part 4 Track 4
Questions 21 to 30
You will hear a student, Adli, talking about his experience as a personal shopper. For questions 21 to 30, fill in the
missing information in each numbered space. Use NO MORE THAN ONE WORD for each space. You will hear the
interview twice. Answer all the questions.

Personal Shoppers

There are two types of personal shoppers. First, those who focus on local retail outlets. Another type of shopper

deals with international retailers. Most personal shoppers travel abroad. They help their clients shop for branded
or international (21)   products   that are more expensive or cannot be found in Malaysia.
Mr Mika is a (22)   freelancer  . He gets paid after purchasing items (23)   requested   by his
clients. However, there are personal shoppers who work on a permanent basis. For a (24)  full-time  personal

shopper, the starting salary may range from RM1,000 to RM3,000 per month. However, it depends on companies.
Some (25)   companies   run errands for their customers, deal with freelancers and get paid about RM25

to RM30 per hour.

A personal shopper faces two sets of (26)   challenges  . One of them is to create a booklet and the
other is the minimal fee charges. It is difficult to produce a user-friendly booklet for some items as this can

keep changing and each brand’s booklet is different. Also, the minimum purchase amount and service fee must
be (27)   calculated   carefully so clients feel that the amount spent is worth the convenience of hiring a

personal shopper.

According to Mr Mika, there are (28)   three   ways to become a personal shopper. Firstly, by starting
your very own business. Then, creating your social (29)   media   page or website to attract customers.

Secondly, you can join a personal shopping company and thirdly, you can choose to freelance during all your
(30)   trips   out of the country.

Good morning/afternoon/evening. I’m… and this is my colleague... She’ll just listen to us. First of all, we’d like to know something
about you.

Candidate B: That’s interesting. May I know what is your favourite subject in school?

Now, I’m going to ask you about learning multiple languages. Select one or more questions from the list to ask the candidates.
Use candidates’ names throughout.

Now, I’m going to ask you about learning multiple languages. What language do you know?

Do you speak any other languages? Why/Why not?

Interlocutor In this part of the test, I’m going to give each of you a topic and I’d like you to talk about it on your own for
Candidate A about a minute. You also need to answer a question briefly about your partner’s topic.
Interlocutor (Candidate A), it’s your turn first. Here’s your task. Place Part 2 booklet, open at Task 2A, in front of Candidate A.
I’d like you to talk about the habits of eating fast food. First, you have some time to think about what
Candidate A you’re going to say.
(1 minute)
Allow candidate 20 seconds to prepare.

All right? You may start now.
Back-up prompts to be used if necessary. Use the prompts below.
What can you say about this point? Do you like eating fast food?

(What is your opinion about fast food?) In my opinion, fast food is not a healthy kind of food that anyone should
consume, especially if taken on a daily basis. (How frequently do you eat fast food?) As for me, I do eat fast food
just like everyone else, but I only have it twice a month. Usually, I would buy it only when my father takes my
family out for supper. (What are the examples of fast food?) Some examples of fast food are burgers, pizzas, fried
chicken and French fries. (Where to get them?) You can get fast food at almost every place in town or residential
areas (Why?) because fast food is a popular trend with teenagers and children. (Why do people like fast food?)
To me, the reasons why people love fast food are due to its taste, price and convenience. The meals are ready-
made.

B1

Interlocutor Thank you. (Candidate B), do you agree that eating too much fast food would harm your health? Why?
Candidate B
(What is your opinion?) In my opinion, I do agree that eating too much fast food harms our health (Why?)
(approx. because it contains a high amount of sugar, fats and sodium. Fast food is oily too, especially fried chicken
20 seconds) and French fries.

Interlocutor Thank you. (Candidate A), can I have the booklet, please? Retrieve Part 2 booklet. Place Part 2 booklet, open
at Task 2B, in front of Candidate B.
Candidate B
Now, (Candidate B), here’s your task. I’d like you to talk about a balanced diet. First, you have some time
Interlocutor to think about what you’re going to say.

Candidate B Allow candidate 20 seconds to prepare.
(1 minute)
All right? You may start now.
Interlocutor Back-up prompts to be used if necessary. Use the prompts below.
Candidate A What can you say about this point? Do you even know what is a balanced diet?

(approx. (What do you understand by a balanced diet?) To me, a balanced diet means a diet that consists of various types
20 seconds) of healthy food that are good for our body. (Which food group makes a balanced diet?) A balanced diet consists
Interlocutor of fruits, vegetables, carbohydrates, calcium and protein. (What are the benefits?) The benefits of a balanced diet
are firstly, to maintain a healthy weight (How?) by eating the correct type of food every day. Secondly, a balanced
diet helps to build a strong immune system that can help ward off diseases. (Why?) When we consume healthy
food, our body stays healthy and strong, too. (Why is a balanced diet important?) In my opinion, a balanced diet
is crucial for good health. If we don’t monitor our eating habits, then we might fall sick easily.

Thank you. (Candidate A), in your opinion, why would some people refuse to eat a balanced diet?

(What is your opinion?) From my point of view, some people refuse to adopt a balanced diet due to a lack
of health awareness. (Why does this happen?) Most people think that eating fast food and junk food doesn’t
harm their health at all.

Thank you. (Candidate B), can I have the booklet, please? Retrieve Part 2 booklet.

Activity Gifts Part 3
4-5 minutes

Interlocutor Now, I’d like you to talk about something together for about three minutes. The task will have two parts. In
the first part, you will discuss something with each other for about two minutes. Then, in the second part,
Interlocutor you will have another minute to make a decision together. All right? Let’s begin with the discussion task.

Candidates Activity gifts, or also known as experience gifts allow the recipient to enjoy new activities or
A&B experiences in life. Place Part 3 booklet, open at Task 3, in front of the candidates. Here are some ideas
on activity gifts that you would want for your birthday and a question for you to discuss. First, you have
(2 minutes) some time to look at the task.

Allow candidates 20 seconds to prepare.

Now, talk to each other about the activity gifts you would want for your birthday.
Back-up prompts to be used if necessary:
What do you think (candidate name)? What about this (pointing to option)?

Candidate A: (What do you think about cooking classes?) To begin with, I would love to have a cooking
class as an activity gift for my birthday. (Why?) I love to help my mother in the kitchen almost every day.
Besides, one of my ambitions is to be a successful chef. I also love to cook. (What would you get by joining
the class?) By joining the cooking class, perhaps I can learn cooking techniques and also new recipes. What
about you?
Candidate B: (What about musical instrument lessons?) In my opinion, I would gladly accept musical
instrument lessons as an activity gift (Why?) because music is very close to my heart. (What kind of
instrument do you want to learn?) I would like to learn how to play the guitar and also the drum (Why do
you want to learn these musical instruments?) as those two musical instruments are difficult to learn on my
own. I have no one to teach me how to play them. What do you think about the next activity gift?
Candidate A: (Do you agree or disagree?) Yes, I totally agree with you (Why?) for once you have completed
the music lessons, you can spend your free time playing musical instruments. (What about theme park
passes?) For the next activity gift, I don’t think I would want to get theme park passes. (What is the
reason?) I dislike water activities (Why is that?) because I’m afraid of water. I’m scared that I might drown
in the water. What do you say about hot air balloon rides? Do you like them?
Versi Demo
B2

Candidates Candidate B: (What about hot air balloon rides?) Of course, I like to receive hot air balloon rides as an activity
A&B gift. (Why?) It has been my dream to experience a hot air balloon ride. I haven’t been on one before. It would be
thrilling to go on one. To me, it’s not easy to experience such rides as you can’t get that kind of experience every
(2 minutes) weekend. (What is the reason? Usually, you have to wait for a hot air balloon ride festival such as the Putrajaya
Hot Air Balloon Festival. What about you?
Interlocutor Candidate A: In my opinion, I also would want to receive that kind of gift too and I share the same reason
Candidates as you’ve said earlier. However, I’m not sure that my parents would want to give that kind of gift as I believe
it’s expensive.
A&B Candidate B: What do you think about the next activity gift on the list? Do you like to receive swimming
(1 minute) lessons as an activity gift since you’re not fond of water activities?
Candidate A: (What about swimming lessons?) Yes, I certainly dislike water activities. However, I think it would be
Interlocutor beneficial for me to get that kind of activity gift. (Why?) Perhaps once I have known how to swim, I would enjoy
water activities more than ever such as swimming in the beach or the swimming pool. What would you say about
Candidates coding classes? Would you enjoy them if you received that kind of activity gift?
A&B Candidate B: (What do you think?) Yes, I would love to have coding classes for my birthday gift for I always
spend my time surfing the Internet and also playing online games. (How will it benefit you?) By joining
(2 minutes) these classes, I will learn a lot of things related to coding and computer programming. After I’ve completed
the class, I can’t wait to create my own mobile applications. Who knows one day I can be a successful mobile
Interlocutor applications developer?

Thank you. Now you have about a minute to decide together which activity gift is the most popular
choice among teenagers.

Candidate A: To me, a hot air balloon ride would be the most popular choice among teenagers. It’s not something
that they can try every day. What do you think?
Candidate B: I disagree with you because perhaps some teenagers are afraid of heights. What about if we
choose musical instrument lessons as activity gifts? In my opinion, I believe that many teenagers love music.
It would be more fun if they are able to play some musical instruments too. Do you agree?
Candidate A: Well, I agree with you for teenagers enjoy music. It has always been a part of their life. I don’t
think there is anyone who dislikes music, especially teenagers like us.
Candidate B: Very well then. I’m glad we are on the same page on this. Musical instrument lessons are our
choice of activity gift.

Thank you. Can I have the booklet, please? Retrieve Part 3 booklet.

You’ve been talking about the activity gifts you would want for your birthday, now let’s hear your opinion on
this. What are other activity gifts that would be beneficial to teenagers?

Select any of the following prompts as appropriate:
• What do you think?
• Do you agree?
• How about you?

Candidate A: In my opinion, I would like to suggest computer lessons as an activity gift. Every teenager should at
least have some basic working knowledge of computers. They can learn how to use various computer applications
like Word and PowerPoint. What do you think?
Candidate B: I agree with your suggestion because since the Covid-19 outbreak, many teenagers would
spend most of their time at home in front of their laptops or computers. It would be better if they knew how
to use most computer applications installed on their laptops or computers.
Candidate A: You’re right. It has become a new norm for schools to organise online competitions like an online
diary, storytelling, and video editing. When teenagers know how to use computer applications, I believe they
would not have any excuse for not joining online competitions organised by schools. What do you suggest?
Candidate B: To me, I would say that jungle survival lessons would be a beneficial activity gift. Teenagers like us
these days are lacking from outdoor activities due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Do you agree with my suggestion?
Candidate A: Of course! Not just me, but I believe that teenagers are becoming soft and passive, because we
spend most of our days watching television and playing online games at home. Am I right?
Candidate B: You’re right. In my opinion, teenagers should explore the world more by joining challenging
yet fun activities like jungle survival lessons. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we can no longer participate
in annual school camping trips. Therefore, jungle survival lessons would be the best replacement. Do you
have any other suggestions?
Candidate A: I think that’s all I could think of as I believe those two suggestions are closely related to the
current situation faced by teenagers. Do you agree?
Candidate B: Yes, I’m on the same page as you. I believe our suggestions would make beneficial activity gifts
for teenagers.

Thank you, (candidate A and candidate B). That’s the end of the Speaking test.
