WSJ Time For Action Is NOW wall school journal Quatern Edition AFGJI 2023-2024

2 The Quatern Edition is synonymous with the magical number 4. It signifies the 4 seasons in a year, the 4 sides and 4 corners of a perfect square, the 4 faces of the creator Brahma, the 4 directions, the 4 Vedas and the 4 Ashramas of life. In the spiritual realm , the 4 elements -water, fire, earth and air represent the importance of collaboration and unity in achieving our goals. In numerology, it represents stability, order and practicality. Hope the magical number 4 brings stability, unity and success in everyone’s life. clicked by Ishaan Barik of XI-B IV

1 EDITOR’S DESK The number 4 is an intriguing one. It is not just a balance of 2 + 2, but it represents the fourth wall, the four seasons, the leap year cycle, a perfect square, the four cardinal directions and the most important of them all—the fourth dimension-time. Time provides us with a rare opportunity to not only observe but live through a perfect oxymoron, that of a Continuum, that of everlasting changes. In this fourth edition of the Wall School Journal, we mull over its immortal existence. The very meaning of time changes as we enter the twelfth grade. We find ourselves arrested by a daunting realisation about the many miles needed to go before we sleep. We have entered a metaphorical winter, the final stage of school education, preparation, hard-work, diligence and resolute patience that will eventually lead to our spring, our future, our lives. Though the still life of winter is held in distaste by many, its inevitability and irreplaceable significance in the onset of spring makes us realise its importance. But amidst this chaos of structure and control, we are placed in an indelible dilemma, for what else allows the settling of beauty around us if not the passage of time? Reminiscing upon all the memories from our childhood, enjoying the little surprises and eagerly waiting for infinite opportunities that lie ahead us—isn’t it this change which brings us joy, sorrow, anger, love and everything that makes life. Life? Time is both a benevolent patron and a cruel villain, and amidst the chaotic world we live in, we rarely reflect on how this cycle of everlasting changes impact us. Balancing academia, passion, cliques and our own mindfulness requires a mastery of time we’re all far too young to fathom. Errare humanum est—it is only human to falter here and there, bounce back and instead of worrying about what time is, do what time does instead: keep going on. It is therefore only right to start the journal with this futuristic theme. We present to you all, the Wall School Journal, 2023-24. Continuum—everlasting changes.

4 DRUGS: A MATTER OF CONCERN Today’s young minds have been fascinated by drugs and intoxicants. These drugs have taken a toll on innocent lives not just abroad, but in India as well. If drug culture and abuse continues, then the human race may just end up becoming extinct. Drugs are distributed around the globe in different forms. Tobacco, which falls under ‘Nicotine’ is a great killer of this century. Nicotine consumption is habit-forming. Tobacco users often fall prey to oral cancer, lung cancer, high blood pressure, angina and heart attacks. It is a slow killer-the end comes after twenty years. People may be able to abstain from it for a short period but many times, a relapse occurs. It is unfortunate to know that female students resort to smoking as well, eventually suffering down the line, due to pregnancy complications. Tea and coffee are mild drugs. They are flushed out of the human body after a few hours of consumption. But alas, caffeine lovers too, face threats. Excessive consumption invites ulcers, acidity, liver disorders, stomach ache, jaundice and indigestion. However, if taken in limited quantities, these drugs are not very harmful. Drug consumption is the biggest bane for society. The drug addict more often than not falls into the evil nets of drug peddling, illicit sex and even AIDS. They may fatally get entrapped in a vicious cycle. Drug abuse also ends up persuading students to spend their money without regard and whenever they lack money, they compensate by selling whatever they can get their hands on-from books to heirlooms. Today’s youth have to eschew this bane otherwise their careers, health, families and more may get completely destroyed. It is our responsibility as a society to keep away from drugs. We are the future administrators of this country. I’m sure 70% of the readers of this article are going to be students and it is very important for the youth to understand and realise the segregating line between what may be beneficial and what may be detrimental. After all, a life full of drugs is merely a waste of human resources. In this “modern” world, everyone is utilising the internet to its fullest - from office work to entertainment - everywhere people are using the internet for their benefit. But what if there is someone out there, just looking for a chance to cause you harm, using the very same medium you trust - the internet? These “someones” are known as cyber criminals. They commit crimes using the internet and thus comes the name “Cyber Crime”. These days we hear so many CYBER CRIME: THE NEW AGE DEMON by Anukriti Chauhan of XI-B by Vedant Giri of XI-A clicked by Arjun Aniket Abhyankar of

5 brought this social awakening in my life. She made me realise that there are people who care about these creatures. Today I live with not only one but two dogs. People call her crazy for doing so much, for getting up early everyday, just to feed these souls. But today, when I see those dogs running behind her with just love in their eyes waiting for a gentle pat of love and some food to fill their tummies, I see happiness. I see happiness spreading around. The flock of birds also trying to steal some leftover food from the bowls make me laugh everyday! Amidst all this, I learnt that love is a special bond and that it takes only love and care to make people come together. Today I proudly tell everyone that I am a helping hand for my mother, who feeds not two but 50 dogs everyday. Today we are in need of a compassionate and a better world, a world where there is no animosity, a world where we are empathetic to others, where there is kindness and humility. A world where instead of ‘I’ it’s more about ‘us’. Today I find an awakening inside me where I have not only limited myself to animals only, but to those people too who need a voice, who need a Sometimes I ponder - could I have realised it a bit sooner? Could I have paid a little more attention towards these four legged animals that roam in the streets with no one to call their own and no place to call a home? I was 6 years old when I fell in love with the word ‘dogs’. Come to think of it now, somewhere in the midst of imagining dogs to be a pedigree breed, I forgot that there existed a pack that couldn’t get the love they wanted. In today’s world, we call them ‘streeties’. The ones who don’t have a home, the ones who don’t have a perfect diet but instead a garbage bin to fill their empty stomach with. Having a pedigree furry friend at home, I never realised the importance of these souls which were unfed for weeks untreated for their illness. But don’t they say that some people are angels? My mother reports of increasing cyber crimes and read articles about how someone got bankrupt just by divulging an OTP to an unknown number. But why are such crimes increasing day by day? Somewhere we ourselves as netizens are not careful enough of our own activities online. Some are not aware of the internet protocols, that is, how to operate safely. We must remember that whatever we post on the internet, remains there as our digital footprint and can be retrieved and used by hackers for their own motives - yes, even if we delete them. In the end, it is on us how we operate on the internet because only we can stop this “demon” known as cyber crime from spreading itself more than it has already done. 6 helping hand who can depend and rely on me with their trust and faith. I feel so fortunate to be part of this universe where all living beings co-exist harmoniously... and my question to you isWhen will you have this social awakening and are you ready to embrace it ? ating anti-nationalistic feelings in each other. This can also deepen socio-economic disparities and create social imbalances. • ABANDONMENT OF NATIONAL INTERESTS: Global citizenship might lead to ignorance of national interests and priorities. While it is essential to make efforts on creating global citizens, neglecting national concerns can entirely lead to neglect of crucial democratic issues such as economic development, social welfare and environmental sustainability. • LOSS OF NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY: Advocating for global citizenship can potentially undermine the principle of national sovereignty. National governments serve as key actors responsible for making decisions and policies that best suit their citizens’ needs. Placing a higher emphasis on global citizenship may diminish the authority and autonomy of individual nations. This could lead to an erosion of national identities, as decisions are made in pursuit of global objectives rather than those specific to a nation’s cultural, social and economic Global citizenship is a term used to describe the social, environmental and economic actions taken by individuals and communities who recognise that every person is a citizen of the world. While there are numerous benefits associated with creating global citizens, it is important to acknowledge the potential disadvantages it could possibly create. • LOSS OF CULTURAL RECOGNITION: Emphasising global citizenship can also lead to loss of one’s cultural identity. Humans will prioritise global views against their own heritage and ethnicity, which will eventually create a sense of disconnection from their ancient roots. • LOSS OF LOCAL KNOWLEDGE: Local knowledge preserved since ages could create insights which are beneficial for the future and help in hindering holistic problems. Creating a global jungle could potentially give rise to devaluation of local and traditional systems. • INEQUALITY AND MARGINALISATION: Focusing on global citizenship could extend regional inequalities. When every organisation and government is working to develop citizens all around the globe, it may leave behind some marginalised communities, creby Aditi Gupta of XI-A GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP clicked by Parth A

7 NOT A EUPHORIC BODY context. • UNEQUAL DISTRIBUTION OF RESOURCES: Promoting global citizenship often implies the idea of equal rights and responsibilities for all individuals worldwide. However, achieving true equality is an enormous challenge due to the vast disparities in resource distribution among nations. Global citizenship may inadvertently overlook these existing inequalities and fail to address the structural factors that perpetuate poverty and resource scarcity. While the concept of global citizenship has its merits, it is crucial to recognize its potential drawbacks. Preserving cultural diversity, addressing resource disparities and safeguarding national sovereignty are essential considerations when promoting global citizenship. Striking a balance between global co-operation and the preservation of individual identities and autonomy is the key to navigating the complexities of our increasingly interconnected social jungle. by Garv Kargeti of XI-B Arora of XI-D Body dysmorphia is one of the most common problems faced nowadays, especially by teenagers. It is defined as one’s hatred towards their own physical body. It is an ugly feeling of discomfort in your own skin. I have suffered/am suffering from this state and there are various issues I have dealt with due to it. Waking up every day and discovering myself in the same skin leaves me with the feeling of ripping out my excess mass in my body. I feel ennui all the time. The constant comparison I have done of my body with other ‘perfect’ human bodies generated the desire to attain perfection in my body figure. Feeling disfigured and dysmorphic all the time leads to a lack of confidence along with social anxiety, self-hatred and even self-harm. I used to compare myself with other peers leading to an inferiority complex. I tend to think of myself as an inferior person to someone with an ‘ideal’ body. Generally, it affects a person heavily, both physically as well as emotionally. Initially I had trouble from participating in anything or being active in social events due to the fear of getting called out or being made fun of. It gets hard to love yourself, you tend to lose your interest in surroundings and become conscious all the time about your appearance. The severity of this complex affects so heavily that a person starts to adjust their wardrobe to suit their insecurities. He/She starts wearing baggy outfits to hide his/her vulnerabilities. Body dysmorphia affects a person to the core. I am still struggling with this dysmorphia but some weeks back, I decided not to weep anymore about my condition and rather work for it to get myself in a better position. In the end, a person has to accept his/her body or change it for the better by working hard on it to get out of this dysmorphic feeling. It can be really hard to get out of this state especially when many people give pessimistic comments about your body. But it is your choice: to rather stay as you are and cry about it all the time or transform your body for your own good. “Love yourself first and everything else falls into line.” Lucille Ball

8 Was the driver late with your food? You can use your phone to give him a onestar rating. Did the shopkeeper treat you curtly? You can write her a critical review. While smartphones enable us to shop, keep up with friends and more, they have also given us the power to publicly rate each other. And this can be a problem. Rating each other this way is problematic because judgements can be made without context. The driver gets rated poorly for a late delivery due to circumstances out of his control. The shopkeeper gets a negative review when she has been up all night with a sick child. How can we avoid rating others unfairly like this? We can do so by being empathetic, by putting ourselves in their shoes and understanding their situation or the reason behind their flaws or shortcomings. What if we are rated for our behaviour by our parents, friends or for that matter our teachers? Will we be happy to get one star or two star ratings for our conduct of behaviour? Think about it? How would we feel? So next time you try to write a critical review, place yourself in their shoes and think! by Rhesa Rao of XI-D SMART-PHONE COMPASSION clicked by Rhesa Rao of XI-D

I felt the beating of my heart, Matching the marching contingent. With a rifle in hand, They flipped their rifles high up in the air. Men in blue, a picture of perfection, Screamed their dedication, Shining as bright as the blue. The air warriors roared through the sky, Shaking the earth as they passed by. Pretty sure she’s an angel.. a gift carved out of love, golden. You’re on your own, kid Yeah, you can face this You’re on your own, kid You always have been. We live in a world where being “cool” apparently means to live an unrealistically perfect life. We all want to fit in or in Swift’s words, we all “play it cool with the best of them.” This song was the silver lining to my clouds of grey and taught me to embrace my flaws. I learnt how to stop trying to look effortless and perfect because, “effortlessness and perfection are a myth”. This song taught me to cherish every moment and make it worth the while. Help me to decide Help me make the Most of freedom and of pleasure Nothing lasts forever Everybody wants to rule the world I personally find these set of words truly responsive when it arrives to questioning my own potential of achieving my aim. We all long for a good and lavish lifestyle. But through the chaos of all the wants and needs, I ponder : ‘Are we able to make the most out of our life or sacrifice the precious moments and our social responsibilities’? Is a stable bank account really a viable substitution? Aditi Gupta XI-A Everybody Wants To Rule The World TEARS FOR FEARS 29

As a child, I always pondered upon dreams. It’s astounding how we feel everything so vividly, while dreaming only to wake up and realise it was all just in our minds. But here’s the thing - what if we’re dreaming right now? What if all the things we are worrying about don’t exist in reality? The possibilities are endless and thrilling to consider! Ishani Sharma XI-D But no more worries, rest your head and go to sleep, Maybe one day we’ll wake up and that’ll just be a dream. Mockingbird EMINEM 30

I think hope is something very beautiful. It simply isn’t enough to just “wish” for something to happen. Hope is important because it involves the will to get there and different paths for you to take. The reason for my motivation is hope. The hope that I will become a doctor, an oncologist and help out people; make sure people don’t go through what my aunt went through and lastly, the hope that I will make my parents proud one day. Sometimes I wish that I could freeze the picture And save it from the funny tricks of time. These lyrics make me think that there are times when we desire to preserve a situation as it appears, to maintain its beauty over the course of time that typically alters or distorts it. In the song, a mother wished to freeze time for her daughter, preserving youth and innocence, but time cannot be stopped, though her daughter’s growth can be cherished. Strap the wing to me Death trap clad happily With wax melted, I’d meet the sea Under sunlight, sunlight, sunlight Sunlight HOZIER Deeming himself an Icarus, Hozier expresses his undying love for his lady, the Sunlight, in these words. Icarus was believed to be arrogant; he dreamt too high (quite literally) and did not know when to stop. Hozier, in an interesting spin off, he challenges the world and implies that no portrayal of love by him can be too arrogant. His devotion surpasses the laws of mortals and we find him unafraid of even death, just as long as his love for ‘sunlight’ remains unquestioned. It is this unique expression and interpretation which leads me to deem these lyrics as one of his best. Saanvi Tripathi XI-D 34

This song signifies to me that last year something bad happened.. Sadness was cancelling out my happiness and taking over my life. No matter how much I tried to be optimistic, in the end everything was falling apart. This year, I have finally got a back up plan, although it wasn’t without several setbacks.
