Introduction
Proper menstrual hygiene management is one of the most important and basic aspects of feminine
health that is unfortunately neglected not just in developing countries like India but worldwide.
ArogyaVidya Bharat aims at promoting the hygienic and sanitation practices among girl children, girl
students and every woman thereby improving the quality of their lives. This is an initiative to support
every girl child/Women to adopt a hygienic way of handling menstruation days without any hindrance.
Project Objective
The overall objective for the project is to install sanitary napkin vending machines to deliver sanitary
napkins anytime to girl students and to install sanitary napkin incinerators to dispose used sanitary
napkins without creating landfill thereby enabling girls to stay hygiene by ensuring access to hygienic
products and proper disposal option. The benefits of the projects are
1. Immediate access to napkins anytime of the day to meet the menstrual emergencies.
2. Self dispensing of the Napkin at the drop of coins.
3. Saves the embarrassment of seeking napkins in the peer group or from authorities.
4. Disposing the used napkins immediately in turn reducing the infection caused.
5. To get rid off from blockage in toilets due to flushing of used napkins.
Disposal of Sanitary Napkins – A major growing concern
There is one category of waste that makes everybody queasy. It is the disposal of our sanitary waste;
used feminine hygiene products and used disposable diapers.
With the addition of blood, used disposables become dangerous for a city corporation to deal with.
They cannot be humanly handled by garbage collectors; they contain a cocktail of materials including
cotton, a super absorbent polymer, and a whole lot of plastic.
The environmental trail of these products is even more alarming. It takes 236 ml of crude oil to create
the plastic that goes into a single diaper which is available in market. The statistics around feminine
hygiene products are no less alarming. Only 12% of the 355 million women of menstruating age in
India can afford disposable sanitary napkins. But conservatively, these 42.6 million women will throw
21.3 billion sanitary napkins into a landfill in their lives.
Women, both rural and urban, face this question every month while government authorities struggle to
find a way to handle the staggering amount of sanitary waste generated every month.
While some women wrap it in plastic or paper and throw it along with domestic garbage, some flush
them down or throw them into water bodies.
"An average woman throws away about 150kg of mostly non-biodegradable absorbents every year,"
What happens to the napkins after they are ‘disposed of’?
“One major issue of sanitary waste has always been their categorization, i.e., whether it is biomedical
or plastic waste,” as per the reports from Centre for Science and Environment, India.
Soiled napkins, diapers, and blood-soaked cotton, which are household waste according to the
Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000, are disposed of after segregation
into biodegradable and non-biodegradable components.
4|Page
However, the Bio-Medical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1998 says that items
contaminated with blood and body fluids, including cotton, dressings, soiled plaster casts, lines and
bedding, are bio-medical waste and should be incinerated, autoclaved or micro waved to destroy
pathogens.
The lack of concern for sanitary waste management in our country is reflected in the fact that there
are no reliable statistics available on the subject. "Due to the lack of segregation of waste in India,
there is hardly any documentation on this.”
Here is what happens to disposed sanitary napkins (dsn)
After you hand the soiled napkins over to the garbage collector, the napkins are collected as
household waste by garbage collectors and later segregated, often manually.
"Waste pickers separate out soiled napkins from recyclable items by hand, exposing themselves to
micro-organisms like E.Coli, salmonella, staphylococcus, HIV and pathogens that cause hepatitis and
tetanus,"
After this, the sanitary waste is driven out of the city and buried in a landfill on the outskirts of a city. At
times they are shredded before being buried.
Project Performance
InnovoSoft Technologies Pvt Ltd always believes in delivering the best to our customers; we have
maintained the same to keep the performance of the project at its maximum by providing frequent
support whenever is needed.
1. We have delivered the machine with sensor integrated to increase the heater and machine
life and for reducing electricity charges.
2. Complete burning of napkins with less than 1 to 2 grams of ash per napkin.
3. We have delivered the vending machine which consumes zero electricity. Thereby electricity
consumption can be made very less.
By bringing these additional features we have boosted the performance of the project which was also
appreciated by the school.
