Your Majesty Queen Noor, Mr. Chairman and all Members of the United
World Colleges,
I was thrilled to welcome you to South Africa in November and to be
inaugurated as President of the UWC International Council. Having
experienced the enthusiasm and excitement of the meetings I am more
than ever convinced of the role which the UWC has to play in the futu-
re of education world-wide. I feel strongly that the UWC’s are unique
and they are conscious of their responsibilities. With the proper sup-
port, they can help make the world a better place.

UWC INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL 1995 - SECOND SESSION 17
Message from
HRH The Prince of Wales
I am delighted, on this important occasion, to send my
warmest congratulations and good wishes to the new Presi-
dents of the United World Colleges, HM Queen Noor Al Hus-
sein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and President Nel-
son Mandela of South Africa. Their agreement to take on this
important role is a testimony to the United World Colleges’
continuing commitment to nurturing peace and understanding
among all peoples in today’s world. I have the happiest mem-
ories of my own long association with the UWC, of my many
visits to the Colleges, and of my contacts with your teachers,
students and graduates in so many countries. I am particularly
glad to have played a role in establishing the Simon Bolivar
United World College of Agriculture in Venezuela, and I retain
a strong interest in its future success. I am also pleased to be
able to announce to the new Presidents and to Council Mem-
bers the creation of a new programme for UWC scholars to be
known as “The Prince of Wales Scholarships”. Thanks to the
generosity of like-minded donors this programme will be avail-
able to all United World Colleges. The programme will pay
special attention to the needs of UWC scholars from the devel-
oping world, including the Middle East and Africa. I hope very
much that the scholarships will help in a small way to bring the
benefits of the UWC to people who might not otherwise be
able to take part in the unique opportunities provided by the
colleges. On the occasion of this important Council Meeting in
Johannesburg and at Waterford KaMhlaba, I should like to send
to all my very best wishes for the success of your important
work in leading the United World Colleges into the next century.

Award Ceremony
David Sutcliffe
Recently the United World Colleges decided to present Founders Awards on a very select basis to
individuals who had made special contributions to the movement. The first of these awards was
made to a former student of Atlantic College, Tom Gresvig, at the Opening of the Red Cross Nordic
UWC, just a month ago, in Norway. So he already has his medal but Her Majesty, as our President,
has very graciously consented to welcome Tom and to present four further awards.
I am very pleased and honoured to invite her to

persona fisica.
