Frenger Systems is a world-renowned specialist manufacturer of space
conditioning products for indoor climate/environments. Frenger has Active MSCB Installation “Radiant” Passive MSCB Installation
extensive experience dating back some 80 years and is at the forefront
of the design, development and manufacture of water driven cooling and Active MSCB Installation Active Chilled Beam Installation
heating technologies. Over the decades, Frenger has earned an enviable
reputation as a dependable supply partner capable of developing Exposed “Radiant” Passive Chilled Beams in both Black or White
effective space conditioning solutions for the most complex of projects.
Acoustic Lighting & Heating Rafts
Multi-Service Chilled Beams

Frenger’s UK technical facility is dedicated to Multi-Service Chilled Beam
(MSCB) technology. Frenger designs and manufactures in-house and
can meet the specific requirements of the professional team for various
landmark building projects. This ranges from the overall appearance to
the provision of a comfortable working environment for the end user.
MSCBs can utilise either passive or active beam technologies. The MSCB
removes the need for the monolithic ceilings that we have become
accustomed to in office developments, instead providing visually stunning
yet 100% functional building services which are 100% prefabricated
off-site in a controlled factory environment.

Active Chilled Beams

Many large projects with cooling requirements of more than 100 W/m²
are now utilising Frenger’s active beams supplied with fresh air rates of
just 1.2 l/s/m². Frenger offers active chilled beams to meet a multitude of
needs. Frenger’s low profile active beam has <135mm construction depth
and is ideal where the ceiling void is restricted. Frenger’s high
performance beams can handle large air volumes (up to 70l/s per beam)
and consequently delivers the highest cooling capacities.

Passive Chilled Beam & Chilled Ceilings

Frenger’s “Radiant” passive chilled beam ‘X-Wing’ outperforms any other
beam on the market today. Also, X-Wing has no joints in the pipework
coil hence, no risk of leaks. Positioned above a perforated metal ceiling
system, these Radiant Beams deliver unrivalled levels of cooling capacity
and occupancy comfort; up to 150 W/m² of cooling with no draughts and
no noise.

Radiant Beams can also be used with very small ceiling perforations
(2.4mm diameter holes and 28% free area), making it virtually invisible
from below. Frenger has designed, supplied and installed Radiant Chilled
Beam ceilings on many major UK projects and tower buildings for
Australia and other countries.

Multi-Service Radiant Panels (MSRPs)

Frenger’s Acoustic, Lighting and Heating Rafts, otherwise known as
Multi-Service Radiant Panels (MSRPs), consist essentially of a free
hanging Radiant Heating Panel coupled with other services such as
lighting, acoustic sound absorbing materials, apertures for sprinkler
heads, compartment trunking for other electrical services, apertures for
PA and VA speakers, lighting control, PIR sensors and Photocells.

The radiant heating element is the same technology utilised for Frenger’s
Modula panels. Modula is a high-performance heating cassette with a
smooth surface finish. The design and special bonding process employed
in the manufacturing of the panel ensures maximum heat exchange.

Modula has been specifically developed to be integrated into standard
exposed-grid ceiling systems, for use in schools and healthcare
environments, where an easy-to-clean and simple-to-install panel width
with high heating capacity (567 W/m² at 56 dTK) is the preferred solution.
EcoStrip is suitable for heating large buildings, sports halls, aircraft
hangers and factories. Units can be wall mounted or free hanging and
are available in lengths of 4 to 120m. Panels are available in RAL 9010
white or RAL 9002 grey finishes. EcoStrip has been performance tested
to EN 14037.

together with a gateway device enables GSM based connection of

Energy saving and engineering excellence are the hallmarks of Uniflair’s
latest generation of stylish air conditioning units and precision water
chillers, designed for the cooling of comms rooms, co-location and data
centres, UPS rooms and any environments which need year-round
precise control of operating conditions, 24 hours/day.

Air Cooled Turbocor Chillers

The latest innovation from Uniflair is the BCEC air cooled chiller series,
featuring oil-free variable speed Turbocor compressors with magnetic
bearings. ALL models are available in BCEF free-cooling version, for
energy savings that set the new benchmark in this sector, taking
advantage of the double benefits of free-cooling reducing the load on the
refrigeration circuit which then puts the Turbocor compressor into its
highly efficient part load operation. Unlike many rivals, Uniflair has not
opted to simply adapt an existing chiller range to fit the Turbocor, but has
spent considerable time and resources to develop a completely new
range to take full advantage of the benefits of this innovative compressor,
while at the same time ensuring dependable operation even in demanding
ambient temperatures.

Leonardo HDCV High Efficiency CRAC Units

Welcome to the latest generation of high efficiency chilled water downflow
units from Uniflair. As the size and heat load density of hyper-scale data
centres continues to grow, so does the Uniflair range. Chilled water
downflow units now available from 5kW to 300kW and all frame sizes
have at least two coil options to suit both cooler legacy temperatures or
latest generation high temperature operation on both air and water side.
With a separate fan deck, suitable for location above or below a raised
floor, these stylish units offer maximum capacity and efficiency from the
smallest of footprints, freeing up valuable additional white space within
the data centre. Designed specifically for the modern data centre with
performance optimised at elevated temperatures in line with the latest
ASHRAE guidelines, and combined with cutting-edge composite fan
technology, the HDCV range offers up to 50% fan power savings
compared to conventional downflow units.

Chillers with “Intelligent Free-Cooling”

Built to the same high standards as the precision air conditioning units,
the chiller range is equally well-suited to 24/7 or other applications where
reliability and energy efficiency are key. All critical chilled water systems
will require a standby chiller to ensure the necessary levels of resilience
are maintained at all times. For chillers from 40kW up to 1.7MW, Uniflair
has created “Intelligent Free Cooling” which allows the free-cooling
potential of any standby chillers to be utilised without compromising the
resilience levels of the system. Uniflair Intelligent Free-Cooling maximises
energy savings whenever the ambient temperature is below the chilled
water return temperature, including:

• 10% reduction in main pump size (intelligent free cooling pump fitted
on-board)

• Up to 90% additional free-cooling from any “Intelligent” standby chiller

• Optional integral Adiabatic system providing free-cooling from higher
ambient temperatures & significant reduction in overall energy
consumption

Optimisation Management

Not only are the individual air conditioning units and chillers market
leaders in terms of energy saving, Uniflair goes further in offering
innovative solutions for their management and control as part of complete
systems. For example, in a chilled water system with Uniflair Master
Control, a tracking logic follows the heat load and varies the chilled water
temperature dynamically to maximise operating COP and extend the
periods in which free-cooling is available.

climatically controlled test labs over 2000m² and over 5% of turnover
(non-profit) re-invested into R&D, the company philosophy is one of

Refrion has designed and created the first laboratory in Europe
specialising in the performance testing of even the largest and more

that indoor environments are both comfortable and healthy. This approach

and mental. It also requires effective air filtration and a programme of
regular servicing to ensure optimal system performance.
Public Health England says air pollution kills up to 36,000 people a year
in the UK – and cost the healthcare sector £20 billion a year. The World
Health Organisation describes air pollution as “the single largest
environmental risk to health” – and says the annual global death toll is
around seven million.
Energy efficiency standards in building design have risen in recent years,
with buildings becoming more insulated and airtight. But if, as a result,
fresh air circulation is reduced, oxygen levels may fall while potential for
allergies, odours and condensation may increase.
Designing HVAC systems for energy efficiency attracts high weightings
in BREEAM assessments. But BREEAM also rewards HVAC systems
that maintain high indoor air quality by controlling temperature and
humidity – and ensuring a pollution-free fresh air supply.
Regularly inspecting and cleaning a building’s ventilation system helps
to maintain energy efficiency, as well as helping to ensure the system
works correctly and performs at its optimum level. Daikin has always
recommended the regular cleaning, inspection and maintenance of HVAC
systems, something that is perhaps just as important as the initial
specification, design and installation. Regularly inspecting the system’s
intake and exhausts for any signs of dirt build-up, pollution or
contamination can all help to ensure the system will continue in its role
of delivering a clean and healthy indoor environment. The ductwork and
indoor units should also be inspected for dust, with particular attention
around filters, heating and cooling coils and any change of direction in
the ducting.
To assist with maintaining and ensuring optimum performance of the
ventilation and wider HVAC system, there are a variety of auto-cleaning
ducts and cassettes available. For example, Daikin’s auto-cleaning duct
can be fitted to both VRV and Split air conditioning units and works by
collecting debris from the HVAC system in a dust box, which can then be
easily emptied using a standard vacuum cleaner as part of the building's
regular cleaning schedule.
In the UK, ventilation design is controlled by the Building Regulations
Approved Document Part F, which sets out the criteria for both homes
and ‘non-domestic’ buildings – primarily offices. Building ventilation also
has to comply with a number of British Standards, covering energy
performance, filters and maintenance.
As part of a wider HVAC system, ventilation must comply with Approved
Document Part B (fire safety), Part C (site preparation and resistance to
contaminants and moisture), Part E (resistance to the passage of sound),
Part L (conservation of fuel and power), Part J (combustion appliances
and fuel storage systems) and Part P (electrical safety).
A wide range of ventilation guidance is available, from industry bodies
including CIBSE and the Building Research Establishment.

VRV5 S-Series

Daikin’s VRV 5 S-series offers like-for-like R410A flexibility but with the
advantage of a substantially reduced CO2 equivalent, thanks to the use

of R32 refrigerant and a 10% lower refrigerant charge. Sustainability is
assured over the entire lifecycle because of market-leading seasonal
efficiency – and as R32 is a single-component refrigerant it is easy to
re-use and recycle.
The single-fan 4, 5 and 6hp units in single and three-phase versions are
just 869mm in height, and with their 102kg lightweight and compact design
they are easy to transport. They are rated at 12.1, 14.0 and 15.5kW
(cooling) and 8.4, 9.7 and 10.7kW (heating). All key components are
easily accessible.
Depending on their capacity, the outdoor units can support up to 13, 16
or 18 indoor units. Total allowable piping length is 300 metres.

Daikin Altherma 3 H HT

Latest technology puts the new Daikin Altherma 3 H HT at the pinnacle
of heating performance – in an elegant and award-winning casing,
redesigned for increased acoustic comfort and good looks.

It is an air-to-water (H is for hydro) heat pump, incorporating Daikin’s
R32-based Bluevolution technology.

Charged with just 4.2kg of refrigerant, its innovative double injection
compressor raises leaving water temperatures to 70°C for heating (80°C
for domestic hot water) in the harshest of weather, down to -28°C.

The compressor is housed in a sound-insulated box within the casing,
while the large single fan has been designed to reduce sound and improve
air circulation. The award-winning design of the outer casing features a
light grey colour, to blend with any exterior décor. The front features a
black horizontal grille that conceals the fan.

Unlike earlier high temperature systems, the new heat pump does not
need a secondary refrigerant circuit – and its heat exchanger feeds the
heating circuit directly.

It is paired with a sleek and compact Daikin wall-hung indoor unit that
contains all the hydraulic and electronic components necessary for the
heating and hot water systems. The indoor unit is designed to combine
with a Daikin stainless steel hot water cylinder, which are available in five
capacities from 150 to 300 litres.

Indoor units are either heating only, or reversible to allow space cooling
in hot weather.

The system is controlled via Daikin’s elegant Madoka for heating wired
remote controllers and remotely with the Daikin Online Controller app.

attractive colours – white, silver and black – Madoka adds style and

Measuring just 85 x 85mm, Madoka is an extremely compact, wired
remote controller.

New Ceiling Cassettes from LG

Another unique and innovative design, the Dual Vane 4 Way has a six-step
angle feature to control airflow between -10° to 85° to ensure coverage for

these cassettes to cool and heat room space quickly and more efficiently
than standard vanes.

Also new in 2020 is the Round cassette at only 330mm deep and with

Hydro Kit Unit

For the production of domestic hot water, the hydro kit unit connects to

Available in mid temp up to 50°C or high temp version up to 80°C.

Therma V - Air-to-Water Heat Pumps 5kW ~ 16kW

LG has a full range of Monobloc units operating on the low GWP R32
refrigerant, with water temperatures up to 65°C without an electric back-up
heater, and 100% operational performance down to an outside ambient
temperature of -7°C.

The Monobloc units contain a plate heat exchanger, expansion tank and
a Grundfos water pump with an optional back-up heater. The units have
a 5dB to 6dB lower sound power level compared to the previous model
and can be controlled remotely using the LG smartphone app ThinQ.

Directly benefiting the end user, Dual Sensing

Control (SLC). The system operating conditions are regulated in reaction

Ultimate Inverter Compressor

LG’s own 5th generation compressor offers a host of unique LG
technological developments, a High Sided Shell (HSS), High Pressure
Oil Return (HiPOR™) and a new Polyetheretheketone (PEEK) bearing
which allows an all inverter system compressor to operate between
10Hz-165Hz, increasing partial efficiencies, extending capacity and
increasing reliability. The advanced PEEK bearing system sees a
redesigned scroll bearing consisting of a material normally used in
airplane engines to give high reliability by suffering minimum effects of
frictional wear at high temperatures, a cause normally associated from
periods of oil-less operation. HiPOR™ greatly reduces compressor
energy wastage by returning oil directly into the sump of the compressor.
Oil viscosities are kept low and volumetric efficiencies high which adds
to increased compressor efficiencies by up to 10%.
LG’s concept of real time oil monitoring is included in each compressor.
‘Smart Oil Management’ utilises a sensor placed in each compressor to
monitor oil levels in real time, allowing corrective action when required,
improving lifecycle expectancies and extending heating periods by
eliminating unnecessary oil return, coupled with the added ability to
balance oil levels between compressors.

Large Capacity ODU

Adopting an awareness of biological-inspired engineering, a biomimetic
fan has been developed and incorporated with a 4-sided heat exchanger
and improved compressor performance. Multi V 5’s efficiency and
capacity has been enhanced to be able to provide 26HP (72.8kW) from
a single outdoor unit.
Working with Seoul University’s Department of Mechanical & Aerospace
Engineering, the researchers behind the development of Multi V 5 drew
inspiration from the Humpback whale’s functional morphology of flipper
structures to give a naturally evolved passive flow control. By adopting a
biomechanical approach, increased air flows have become possible,
negating most of the associated negatives.

Black Fin Coating

Equipped with LG’s exclusive Black Fin™, the MULTI V 5 is protected
from corrosive substances such as salt, sand and other elements brought
in by sea winds as well as industrial pollution. The black coating on the
heat exchangers keeps water from accumulating to minimise moisture

Daikin Applied chillers include energy-efficient innovations such as
inverter controls, free cooling, heat recovery and high efficiency
compressors. They are robust and can be relied upon for the very highest
levels of energy efficiency and reliability.
Air cooled chillers are most commonly specified and are available in
cooling only or heat pump versions. They offer a cost effective, versatile
and efficient solution for both comfort and process applications where high
performance and reliability is required. (Capacity range 3kW to 2MW).
Water-cooled chillers also form a key part of the product line-up. The
range is available with scroll, Turbocor® and high efficiency inverter screw

New Low GWP Refrigerant Solutions

Daikin Applied was the first to market with the R32 scroll chiller as a direct
replacement for 410a solutions (now available in cooling only and heat
pump versions). The new R32 chiller benefits from a 70% reduction in
refrigerant GWP compared with 410a, along with solutions for full
refrigerant migration free cooling. An extended heat pump operating
envelop also ensures high efficiency solutions in all conditions.
This is in addition to the new generation of inverter driven air-cooled and
water-cooled screw chiller series with R-1234ze(E) refrigerant and now

Heat Pumps

The Multifunctional EWYD 4z series is the perfect solution to deliver
contemporary cooling and heating. It is designed to meet building
demands in the most efficient and sustainable manner. Multifunctional
unit: up to 900kW in cooling and heating at nominal conditions and is able
to provide simultaneous heating and cooling. Available with both 134a
and 513a refrigerant solutions.
With a compact footprint and excellent efficiency in heat recovery mode:
up to 8,8 (TER), multifunctional units can be considered as an efficient
alternative to traditional solutions (where chillers are used to satisfy the
cooling load and boilers cover the heating load).

Air Movement Facility & CFD Airflow Modelling

Our Air Movement Test Facility was fully replaced and upgraded in 2015

Designed to ISO 5219 specifications, we have superb versatility in room
and plant arrangement which allows controlled air flow through numerous
types of device in a multitude of mounting positions.
Experiments determine key data, including flow rates, pressures,
velocities and temperatures, with the computer centre recording all tests,
both visually and in data form.
Supporting this, we have the latest Computational Fluid Dynamics airflow
modelling software which, using a 3D CAD base, allows our engineers
to generate a computer graphical model of any area complete with air
terminal or other devices. Models are populated with sub structures,
fixtures and other heating/cooling loads, enabling the software to
accurately map and predict the airflow and heat transfer in three
dimensions. Using this software, complex project applications can often
be proven without the need for full laboratory testing.

Natural Ventilation

and rigid in their design and sizing.

EMCEL Circaframe filters are thermoplastically bonded to selected
media, allowing a rustproof, clean finish, with additional options such as
pull tabs and overlaps for sealing.

Where space for withdrawal is an issue, i.e. fan coil units are positioned
near a wall, EMCEL has developed a sectioned filter that can be
withdrawn in denominations to suit customer space.

Stations provide the link between energy suppliers and customers’
systems. They incorporate the necessary equipment to tailor the supplied
heat to the needs of the object premises as specified in the heating supply
contract.

In this they need to comply with all applicable standards and with the
supplier’s technical connection conditions. Indirect connections (in which
district heating and in-house systems are hydraulically isolated)

In the Industry 4.0 network, the drive plays an important role and is
characterised by some enabling features:

Wireless connectivity to smart devices (smartphones and tablets).

Secure connectivity: The drive can connect to other elements in the
network; including BMSs, PLCs, controllers, valves and sensors. In some
applications the drive can be used as the main controller.

The drive as a sensor: Using motor current, voltage, power, motor torque
and speed analysis to sense the motor performance and as a sensor
hub directly acquiring data from the process sensors; such as vibration,
pressure and temperature. Processed data and analytics signals provide
indication of the condition of the drive, motor and application; used to
trigger maintenance or system design improvements.

Evolution of Industrial Automation Systems

We have witnessed a profound change in technology, leading to a new
way of working in a digital world; the fourth industrial revolution.

The first industrial revolution, during the 18th and 19th century, was a
mechanical revolution; triggered by the invention of the steam engine.
By the end of the 19th and early 20th century; the second industrial
revolution unfolded with the adoption of mass production, electrification
and changes in communication (the Electrical Revolution).

Later in the 20th century, the third industrial revolution brought advances
in semiconductors, computing, automation and the internet (the Digital
Revolution).

A possible definition for the fourth industrial revolution, Industry 4.0, is

14314 and is available in a range of thicknesses to suit different

Kooltherm® Insulated Pipe Support Inserts

Kooltherm® Insulated Pipe Support Inserts provide optimal load bearing
capacity whilst offering protection against insulation compression.
Designed for use in pipe supports, hanger brackets and clamps, they will
support the compressive loads imposed by pipework carrying water or
other liquids, whilst maintaining thermal integrity.
Kooltherm® Insulated Pipe Support Inserts are available to suit a full range
of pipe diameters and in a full range of insulation thicknesses; however,
special sizes are available on request.

In addition to allowing a continuous vapour barrier on below ambient
systems, thermal analysis of a +75°C LTHW system to EN ISO
10211:2007 has shown that Kooltherm® Insulated Pipe Support Inserts
can limit heat loss by up to 4x more than rubber lined pipe clips, 5x more
than metal pipe clips and 10x more than hardwood pipe support inserts.

Hot Water Services Engineering in Today’s Environment

Building Engineers actively seek opportunities to reduce energy and
increase use of renewable sources of energy. Energy savings in
centralised hot water distribution systems are a critical focus for designers
as a means to reducing a building’s carbon footprint.
Traditional hot water distribution throughout a building is the ‘flow & return’
system of re-circulated Domestic Hot Water Systems (DHWS).
The return pipework is the means to get the water back to the water
heater to be reheated. This cumbersome solution adds significantly to
the system heat losses, increasing overall inefficiency of the system. The
increased pipework requirements add to the amount of building materials
required, putting additional constraint on packed roof voids and risers
whilst adding cost and waste.
The nVent RAYCHEM Hot Water Temperature Maintenance system
(HWAT) offers a simple, proven, energy-efficient replacement for
re-circulated DHWS.
Rather than re-circulating the cooling water to be reheated, HWAT
compensates for the temperature loss in the pipe removing the need for
return pipework, fixings and insulation, whilst removing the energy losses
of the return pipework.
Because of the heat loss compensation, the redundant return pipework
makes way for other vital building services. HWAT delivers quality hot
water where needed in the most efficient way and reduces material waste
associated with older re-circulating methods.
An intermediate hybrid system set up is possible where nVent RAYCHEM
HWAT is applied on branch lines providing immediate hot water at the
tap without long waits or wasting energy or water. The system
complements the recirculation system on the main lines by ensuring
consistent hot water temperatures up until the last meters of the run-out
