THE JOURNEY FROM IDEAS TO IMPLEMENTATION

ANNURAG BATRA In a classroom full of 40 students and one teacher, how best
to engage these eager, enthusiastic and playful kids? How can
[email protected] schools, in tandem with home, raise kids to be resilient? How
can the spirit of empathy and inclusion be inculcated right
since childhood? How to integrate skills all through the school
and college learning process? Will we be doing justice to even
one degree course if dual degrees are introduced, and will it become a
fad and further marginalise a large section of students?

These and a whole host of other issues were discussed at the BW Ed-
ucation Edutech Summit titled ‘Transformation in Education through
Technology & Skilling’ organised by us and presented by ICFAI Group.
It was our good fortune to be able to listen to the range of fresh ideas
that came forth at the summit. What was particularly heartening was
that the education fraternity is on the same page regarding the Na-
tional Education Policy (NEP), unlike any other policy which invari-
ably draws criticism from one section or the other. What made these
conversations meaningful was that the school and higher education
fraternity present there are actually implementing in their campuses
the ideas that they shared.

So, by way of example, in answer to the first question that I men-
tioned here, the principal of Navy Children School described in detail
how they engage the ‘head, heart and hands’ of children by flipping the
classroom learning. Children become resources, with teachers as ena-
blers, help each other come up to the level of the class, and participate
regularly in ‘shram daan’ like regular cleaning activities.

Similar path-breaking ideas emerged as we profiled the winners
of Edutech Awards to be featured in this issue – these edu-preneurs
are offering a range of solutions, from helping kids grasp English and
maths to helping teachers and school administration assess a child’s
progress on a day-to-day basis, providing financial solutions for higher
studies, helping them find accommodation overseas, helping them
prepare for competitive exams and even offering a curriculum and
expertise to schools in music education.

Our ‘Skills Landscape’ package, besides describing the infrastructure
and curriculum upgradation that has taken place, also throws light on
big departure from the way we as a country have been compartmen-
talising education and skills. Thankfully, NEP has comprehensively
addressed this concern and provided for integration and embedding of
skills and vocational education right since school level, providing for
credits to be scored for skills learnt, and a lot of flexibility in terms of
entry and exit points.
