11 How to Boost Your Immune System
12
13 Many students are not taking proper care of their health. They tend to forget about their health
14 while coping with things such as lessons, extra-curricular activities and social events. Hence, we
15 should take steps to boost our immune system.
16
It is a fact that a good immune system helps build strong resistance against diseases. In order
NOTES to boost our immunity, we should get sufficient sleep. Ideally, we should sleep for six to eight hours
daily. A lack of sleep may cause us to feel tired easily.

Secondly, we must drink eight glasses of water daily. This helps to flush out toxins from our
bodies. It is best to avoid coffe, tea and carbonated drinks.

Thirdly, we should practise good eating habits. Eat more fruits and leafy vegetables. Avoid
taking processed food. Good personal hygiene can also boost our immune system. Wash your
hands after visiting restrooms and before and after meals to kill germs.

Doing regular exercise is equally important. It is a fact that exercise strengthens our bones,
muscles and reduces the risk of osteoporosis. Taking a daily dose of multivitamins will enable us to
build a strong resistance against infections.

Life is a precious gift. We have to take the right step to keep ourselves healthy. After all,
prevention is better than cure.

Hi Farah,
Recently, my family and I made a holiday trip to Pulau Perahu. It was a wonderful trip and we
enjoyed ourselves very much. The water is crystal clear and the island is unspoilt. We even fed
the hornbills which came out in droves in the evening.

Our only disappointment was the unsightly dumping ground we encountered during our tour
around the island. The stench from the rubbish was unbearable.

I’ve emailed the relevant authorities about it. I hope they will find an alternative site to do a
proper landfill, away from the tourist belt.

9
10 HOW TO PREVENT AIR POLLUTION
11
12 Air pollution has become a serious issue over the years. A large number of deaths are mainly
13 caused by the effects of air pollution. In fact, polluted air kills more people than malaria or
14 tuberculosis each year. Air pollution can cause cancer and damage to the immune, neurological,
15 reproductive and respiratory systems. Therefore, we should do our part not to pollute the air.
16
One way is by using our cars less. We could car pool with our neighbours or friends. This will
NOTES reduce the number of cars on the road. We could also take the bus or train to get to our
destination. If it is just a short distance, you could just walk or cycle.

Another way is changing your buying habits. Try to make things instead. You could make your
own organic soap, shampoo or toothpaste. You could cook your meals instead of buying canned
food. In addition, try to go for items with less packaging. For grocery shopping, bring a cloth
recycling bag. You should also adopt the practice of reuse, recycle and reduce in your life as much
as possible.

Thirdly, try to find ways to conserve energy. Minimize the use of lights by setting up your study
space near a window that gets natural light from outside. This will ensure you do not switch the
lights on. Run your dishwasher and washing machine only when at full load and if possible at night.

Finally, unplug your electrical appliances when not in use. Use air-conditioners only when
necessary. Compared to fans, these appliances use up a lot of energy.

In conclusion, we should do our part in reducing air pollution. We should try to use cars less,
change our buying habits and find ways to save energy. All these will go a long way in making our
air cleaner.

11 YOUNG SCIENTISTS CHALLENGE 2019
12
13 With great pleasure, on behalf of Scientists Today, I would like to invite all students between
14 ages of 13 and 15 from your school to take part in the Young Scientists Challenge 2019. The Young
15 Scientists Challenge (YSC) requires teams of four to five secondary school students to put their
16 minds together and come up with an invention. It is not necessary for team members to come from
the same school.
NOTES
This year’s theme for the YSC is ‘A Better World’. Teams from Malaysia and other ASEAN
countries are invited to register and submit their proposals. In 2018, we received 380 proposals
from 423 registrations from five countries including Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and
the Philippines. We are hoping to break that record this year.

Once all the proposals are in, the shortlisted teams will present their projects to a panel of five
judges in the Grand Final. This will take place on 25 September 2019 at Wisma DTC in Kuala
Lumpur.

Scientists Today is a non-profit, non-governmental organization working towards empowering
young children through various community projects such as the Scientific Invention Fair for Young
Children (SIFYC) and other programmes. Please refer to our website www.stscience.org.my for
more information regarding our programmes.
