WHAT IS THE PROBLEM

For my Product Design and Technology folio in 2021 it has
been communicated to me that my design must be centred
around an issue in day to day life and endeavour to improve
the issue. The final product must meet the requirements
outlined by the end user/client and be of its own unique
design.

The problem the end user has brought to my attention is that
their current jewellery storage system does not allow for any
organisation of their jewellery. Their current jewellery box
has limited space, this is a problem because it does not allow
for the end user to collect more items. They have said that all
of their jewellery ends up as a big tangled mess and
discourages the owner from wearing them.

The use of an end user profile is to gain a deeper understanding of what my client likes/dislikes and what they are looking for in
the final product.

USER CENTERED DESIGN

The purpose of user centered design is to gain an understanding of what the end user would like and does not want in the final

product. The research conducted in the user centered design phase is all primary research in the form on one on one questions.

What is the problem this product must fix? This product must provide me with a place to store my
jewellery, watches, sunglasses and personal effects.

Where do you intend on keeping the product? The product will be kept in a drawer in my room. The drawer

Will the product need to be ‘child proof’? Because the product has valuable contents it will not be
accessible to children.

How much would you be willing to pay for the product? If the product is of a very high quality and is designed to last
for a long time I will pay $150.

DESIGN BRIEF

The purpose of the design brief is to outline all of the product design factors, constraints and considerations and the quality statement in relation to
the product being designed. The design brief is a clear an concise statement of what is to be designed and constructed.

After much consultation with Alice Meehan it has been decided that the final product that is being designed is a storage container that has the ability to store
watches, rings, bracelets, necklaces, and other personal items. The product must offer an innovative solution to avoid jewellery getting intertwined whilst displaying
it all in a clear and organised way. The product will aid in making it easier for the end user to choose accessories before work or social events. The design process
should be done in conjunction with the end user to ensure the best product is archived. The product must incorporate a solution that allows for the storage layout to
change as Ms Meehan collects more personal items. It is also of the upmost importance that the storage solution is the most user friendly design possible to
encourage Ms Meehan to get the most of the product. The product must fit into its surrounding in the end users home, all of the existing furniture in the home is dark
glossy hard wood and a somewhat distressed lighter wood. The end user also like when wood and metal are seamlessly combined. It has been communicated from
the end user that the product must uphold the three pillars of sustainability, those being, social, economical and environmental. Ms Meehan has put a notable amount
of emphasis on the economical pillar, she believes that she will pay a slightly higher price of $150 on the assurance that the product will last for a number of years to
come. The legal responsibilities of this storage container is ensuring that all sourcing of materials and sourcing labour meets all Australian laws. It is also the
responsibility of the designer to source finishes that are non toxic and will not harm the end user in any way. The storage container should be made of wood and
incorporate metals, this has been indicated to me from the end user in her like for modern design and materials. Because the product has to incorporate so many
small features and objects it is important that all of the processes and technologies are executed accurately and according to the plans.

The design brief has outlined all of the constraints, considerations, design factors and quality statement. The storage container must hold jewellery and

personal affects, it must be designed to suit the end users needs, the product must be of it own design and use the newest and most innovative processes. The WOODGROVE

product must be of visual interest to the end user, account for the three pillars of sustainability and make effective use of time. The product must finally meet

all safety standards, be made of appropriate materials and incorporate technology in its design.

MIND MAP MARKET RESEARCH

The mind map is used to help visually lay out the options that the designer has when thinking of what to include and use in the design of a
product. The mind map is a place where as a designer, you can bainstorm the first thoughts and ideas you have about the product being
designed.

The mind map has helped the designer visualise what different materials, jointing methods, finishes, style and WOODGROVE
safety to use and include in the design of the product. BANK

EXISTING PRODUCTS

The existing product research is intended to help the designer see what products are on the market and develop ideas that they may like to use in their
product. The existing products portion of the design folio enables the designer to investigate what other competing designers have produced. By
looking and investigating these products the designer can decide what their product may or may not include.

PROCESSES WOODGROVE Number
BANK
The processes stage of the design process outlines all of the stages that may be required in the production of the final product. All of these processes
will be used to achieve the best outcome of the end user. The processes that may be required in the construction of this product are joinery, finishing
and chemical adhesion of materials.

Timber Joinery: Timber joinery sees the connection of two or more pieces of timber. This can be

done in may different ways and many different styles. Although the joining of timer is mostly for strength
designers also put a lot of weight on how a joint will look. Different joints uses different grain orientations
and use different lines. The strength of a joint is also highly depended on how the grain is orientated and
how well the joint is completed by the craftsperson. A very high strength joint would be a mortis and
tennon whereas a very visually pleasing joint may be a mire or a dovetail.

Finishing: Finishing incorporates many different techniques. Finishing requires different stages, the

first stage is preparing the material. Preparing the material may be fixing imperfections in wood with a
filler compound, sanding wood to smooth of the grain, wiping down metal to remove oil and grease.
Wood can be finish with paint, oil, wax or shellac. Metal can be finished with paint or can be powder
coated. Finishing a material can increase the life of the material but it may require constant upkeep such
as reapplication of finishing product.

Chemical adhesion of materials: This process sees the combining of two different materials such as

wood and metal through chemical adhesion. This process involves the preparation of both materials by sanding with
a 80-120 grit sand paper. An epoxy or glue is then used to glue the two materials together and the two are clamped
or taped in place whiles the epoxy/glue dries. It is important that all squeeze out is cleaned up before the epoxy/glue
dries because it will be difficult to remove when dry.

The processes stage has shown what is involved with the 3 main processes in producing a product of this nature. This has helped the designer
understand how long all of the processes should take to complete and aid in the construction of a production plan.

The materials section has helped the designer discover what are the advantages and disadvantages of some possible materials that will be used in WOODGROVE 31
the final design. The designer has decided that the product will be made from walnut and brass highlights. The designer believes this will fit the BANK
end users criteria and taste in design very well.

FINISHES

The finishes section of the design process shows the end user the different types of possible finishes that they could choose to have the product finished
with. There may need to be two or more different finishes used on this project due to the possible combination of wood and metal. It is important the
finish not going to impact the jewellery in any way.

Danish Oil: Danish oil is an oil based finish that provides a clear, natural finish to the timber. Danish oil would be

a great option for the finishing of this product due to the end users criteria being a clear natural finish. Cabot’s
recommends 2-3 coats for a for a low to matte sheen finish. When applying this finish it is recommended by Cabot’s
that gloves and glasses are worn and that the finish is applied in a well ventilated area. At bunnings a 500ml can of
danish oil can be purchased for $36.70. 500ml will cover 5 square meters. https://www.bunnings.com.au/cabot-s-500ml-clear-danish-oil_p1522025

Bees Wax: Bees wax is a toxin free finish that can be applied to wood raw or pre finish. Bees wax will provide a

smooth shiny finish on the product. Bees wax is also a good way to protect metal from minor rust. Bees wax would not
be of any harm to jewellery as it provides a very soft forgiving finish to the contact points. An issue with using bees
wax on this project is it may wear away in high touch areas. Bees wax does not require and PPE due to is natural non
toxic properties. A 200g tin can be purchased form bunnings for $12.50. https://www.bunnings.com.au/glitz-200g-beeswax-polish_p4460472

Walnut Prooftint Stain: Feast Watson’s walnut stain is a very multipurpose finish. This is a sprit based WOODGROVE Number
BANK
finish meaning it is a quick drying stain the soaks into the grain of the wood. Because this is a spirt based finish it has
the ability to be diluted with a colour reducer allowing for experimentation to find the most aesthetically pleasing
colour for the product. This finish would not offer the wood very much protection over time. The PPE required to be
worn when allying this finish is safety glasses and gloves ensuring the application process is in a well ventilated area. A
250ml can is available at bunnings for $26.50. https://www.bunnings.com.au/feast-watson-250ml-walnut-prooftint-interior-stain_p1520068

The finishes stage has help the end user identify the cost, benefits and drawbacks of danish oil, bees wax and walnut Prooftint stain. The bees wax
is a preferred option if the product is going to contain both wood and metal elements because it can be used on both materials.

VISUALISATIONS

Visualisations are the stage of the design process where the designer gathers inspiration form the existing products and market
research along with elements of the design brief and begin to do quick thumbnail sketches. The sketches do not have to meet all
of the criteria set in the design brief it is just a place where the designer can start to explore how the product may look.
