Dear Fellow Racing Enthusiasts,

On behalf of the entire Taylor Made team, we would like to thank you
for your support of our industry, as well as the numerous ways you may
support our Taylor Made family.

There is much to look forward to this year at Taylor Made Stallions. Ex-
citing new Grade 1 winners California Chrome and Mshawish, and Graded
stakes winners and Grade 1-placed Not This Time and Protonico, join As-
trology, Graydar and Northern Afleet to make what we believe to be one
of the top stallion rosters in North America.

Our primary goal continues to be providing breeders superior custom-
er service and offering assistance every step of the way. Taylor Made’s
mode of operation has always been—and remains—to focus on standing
quality stallions that offer breeders great opportunities, whether they are
breeding to race or sell.

We’d also like to give a special thanks to every one of California Chrome’s
fans. California Chrome has been a blessing to the Taylor Made family,
and we appreciate all of the loyal support, well wishes and kind words
that have been expressed through the media and in person.

We wish everyone the best at this year’s Eclipse Awards, and we invite
you to come out to the farm and inspect our stallions.

Sincerely,

The Taylor Brothers

Proud partner
of the Eclipse Awards

Welcome to the 46th annual Eclipse Awards presented by Daily Racing Form,
Breeders’ Cup and The Stronach Group and produced by the NTRA

Eclipse Awards

Thank you for joining the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, the National
Turf Writers and Broadcasters, and Daily Racing Form in celebrating the horses and
individuals who are finalists for the 46th annual Eclipse Awards.

We are delighted to return to the Sport of Kings Theatre at Gulfstream Park Racing
and Casino for our sixth consecutive year. We are especially grateful to The Stronach
Group’s founder and honorary chairman, Frank Stronach, and the entire Gulfstream
Park team for organizing some very enjoyable events this week to benefit the Perma-
nently Disabled Jockeys Fund and the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance.

We also thank our event partners and our presenting sponsors, Daily Racing Form,
The Stronach Group, and the Breeders’ Cup, for their support of this special evening.

We are dedicating tonight’s ceremony in memory of Ogden Mills” Dinny” Phipps, a
2002 Eclipse Award of Merit recipient. Mr. Phipps served the Thoroughbred industry
for more than a half-century with great passion and distinction as The Jockey Club
Chairman and as breeder and owner of one of the great American racing families.
There is no area of North American racing that was not touched – and positively so – by
Mr. Phipps and his influence.

From start to finish, this year’s finalists delivered a multitude of outstanding performances, both at home and
abroad. Leading the way were our finalists for Horse of the Year, Arrogate, California Chrome and Songbird.
Arrogate turned in two scintillating performances, running the fastest Travers Stakes in its 147 editions, and coming
from behind to win a dramatic Breeders’ Cup Classic over California Chrome. California Chrome was a dominant
force all year, winning seven races, including the Dubai World Cup and the TVG Pacific Classic. The 3-year-old filly
Songbird was equally brilliant, and was unbeaten until losing the dramatic Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff by a
whisker to Beholder.

We also witnessed some tremendous efforts from other finalists. Lady Eli made a courageous comeback to the races
this year, won the Flower Bowl and just missed victory against the British-bred Queen’s Trust in the Breeders’ Cup
Filly & Mare Turf. Highland Reel came from Ireland and went wire to wire in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf in
California, while defending female turf champion Tepin went to Royal Ascot and won the Queen Anne Stakes.

In addition to honoring our 17 winners in the human and equine categories tonight, as well as our six media award
winners, we are also saluting 2016 Horseplayer of the Year, Paul Matties, who achieved this honor by topping a field of
629 entries to win the $800,000 first-place prize at the 17th annual Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping
Championship last January at Treasure Island Las Vegas.

Speaking of horseplayers, our Eclipse Award of Merit honorees, Andrew Beyer and Steven Crist, were two of the
most influential advocates supporting the interests of the wagering public throughout their illustrious careers. In
addition to his nearly 40 years as racing columnist for the Washington Post, Andy created the Beyer Speed Figure,
which became a revolutionary tool and a household name that helped bettors handicap races from all over the coun-
try. Steven Crist served the game with distinction in many capacities including writing for The New York Times,
publishing the Daily Racing Form, and conceiving the DRF/NHC National Handicapping Championship initially as
a way to select the Horseplayer of the Year Eclipse Award. We are proud to recognize the extraordinary accomplish-
ments of Andy and Steve.

Thank you for being with us. Enjoy tonight’s ceremony.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES ESPN

Jeannine Edwards

SATURDAY, JANUARY 21, 2017 • GULFSTREAM PARK

Following her dream has become a lifetime reality for Jeannine Edwards, the award-win-
ning reporter and analyst for ESPN and tonight’s master of ceremonies for her sixth consecu-
tive year.

“It is one of my great privileges to host the Eclipse Awards and be a part of this outstanding
evening celebrating horse racing’s champions,” Edwards said. “As someone who has been
in love with racing most of my life, I am truly honored to be back, and along with the rest of
the crowd can’t wait to revisit a year’s worth of memorable moments and honoring tonight’s
winners.”

Being a part of memorable moments has become a standard of Edwards’s career, as she has
been consistently named as one of the top 10 female sportscasters by several media outlets
including Sports Illustrated, which also named her “Best Broadcaster in Horse Racing” in
2004 and No. 1 Broadcaster on Television for October 2007. In 2012 she was recognized by the
Los Angeles Daily News as one of “40 Women Who Raised the Bar in Sports Media”.

Edwards has been a part of three Media Eclipse Award-winning television programs. In
2009, Jeannine’s broadcast team won an Eclipse Award for Outstanding Live Telecast for the
Belmont Stakes on ABC, as well as an Emmy nomination for the Breeders’ Cup on ESPN.
That same team again won the Eclipse Award in 2010 for the Breeders’ Cup on ESPN, as well
as a 2010 Emmy nomination for the same event. In 2011, the Breeders’ Cup Classic telecast on ESPN was again honored with
the Live Television award.

A native of Tenafly, N.J., Edwards spent 10 years on the racetrack as an exercise rider, apprentice jockey, and trainer in
New York and New Jersey before initially getting into television in 1994 as an in-house TV host at racetracks in Maryland.

Edwards started on ESPN as a studio analyst for “National Best 7” in 1995. The show was transformed into “2Day at the
Races” and ran for five years. During that time, Edwards also began reporting on-site for remote racing telecasts as well as
branching out into sideline reporting for college football and, later, college basketball. Edwards became a general assign-
ment reporter shortly thereafter on ESPN’s SportsCenter.

Edwards met her husband, defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer, while covering an Oklahoma State football game in 2011.
The pair married in July 2013 and live in Stillwater, Okla., with Spencer’s two boys, three dogs, and Edwards’s horse, former
Grade 1 winner Ashkal Way.

The Eclipse Awards

Eclipse Awards are bestowed annually upon
the horses and individuals whose outstanding
achievements have earned them the title of
champion in their respective divisions. Champi-
ons are determined by voting representatives of
Daily Racing Form, the National Thoroughbred
Racing Association (NTRA), and the National
Turf Writers And Broadcasters (NTWAB). The
NTRA voting bloc is comprised of Equibase field
personnel and North American racing officials.

There are 17 equine and human categories:
The equine categories are: 2-year-old male,
2-year-old filly, 3-year-old male, 3-year-old filly,
older dirt male, older dirt female, turf male, turf
female, male sprinter, female sprinter, steeple-
chase horse, and, the highest honor, Horse of
the Year. For the sport’s human competitors, the
categories are: owner, breeder, trainer, jockey,
and apprentice jockey.

The Eclipse Award of Merit is given to an individual displaying outstanding life-
time achievement in, and service to, the Thoroughbred industry. A Special Award
may be granted to an individual or an organization performing an exemplary,
meritorious service to the sport in a particular year.

Media Eclipse Awards also are given in the categories of photography, audio
and multi-media Internet, news/enterprise writing, feature/commentary writ-
ing, television/feature programming, and television/live racing programming
to recognize members of the media for outstanding coverage of Thoroughbred
racing. The Horseplayer of the Year, the individual who wins the annual Daily
Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship, is also honored with
an Eclipse Award.

The Eclipse Awards are named after the great 18th century racehorse and
foundation sire Eclipse, who began racing at age 5 and was undefeated in 18 starts,
including eight walkovers. Eclipse sired the winners of 344 races, including three
Epsom Derbies.

HORSE OF THE YEAR FINALISTS

Arrogate

Arrogate, the favorite to be named champion 3-year-
old male tonight, is seeking to join Tiznow as the only
horse to win titles the same year as champion 3-year-
old male and Horse of the Year without competing in
a single Triple Crown race. That it has happened just
once since the Eclipse Awards were founded in 1971
shows the difficulty of that feat. Arrogate made rapid
progress from April 17, when he made his first ca-
reer start, until Nov. 5, when he ran down California
Chrome in a thrilling edition of the Breeders’ Cup
Classic in only his sixth career start. Similarly, Tiznow
did not even get to the races until April of his 3-year-old
year. Arrogate could have a lot more in common with
Tiznow by the end of the evening.

BarBara D. Livingston

California Chrome

BarBara D. Livingston California Chrome was the Horse of the Year in 2014,
and if he wins again tonight he will become the seventh
Songbird horse to earn multiple Horse of the Year titles since the
Eclipse Awards were founded in 1971, joining two-time
BarBara D. Livingston winners Secretariat, Affirmed, John Henry, Cigar,
Curlin, and Wise Dan, and three-time winner Forego.
But he would be only the second horse, following John
Henry in 1981 and 1984, to be named Horse of the Year
in non-consecutive years, and the first entire horse so
honored, as John Henry was a gelding. That’s a tribute
to a team that first decided to keep him in training at
age 5, and a horse who remained at the top of the sport
two years after his first title.

Songbird was the Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old
filly of 2015 and is heavily favored to be named cham-
pion 3-year-old filly this evening, and though she’s a
longshot to add Horse of the Year to her résumé, her
spectacular campaign in 2016 landed her as a finalist in
this category as one of the top three receiving votes. It’s
deserved, for Songbird is only the length of Beholder’s
nose away from being undefeated after 12 races. In 2016,
she won seven times in eight starts, those victories all
coming by margins of no less than 3 3/4 lengths. Four
of her victories were in Grade 1 races, the most Grade
1 wins by any horse based in North America in 2016.

the New York Racing Association, who worked with Crist to pur-
chase the Form in 1998. “Their collective sustained efforts in this
area resulted in policy changes that have improved the interests
of the wagering customers, which ultimately improves the entire
racing industry.”

Beyer’s first book on handicapping, “Picking Winners,” was pub-
lished in 1975, and it quickly ushered in a new era for horse-race
handicapping. The book, now considered a landmark, provided de-
tail into a then-arcane method of assessing a horse’s performance
through the use of speed figures, and its influence, quiet at first,
worked its way through the next generation of horseplayers.

Crist, who would later become known as “King of the Pick Six,”
was one of that next generation. Although he developed his own
figures, Crist based his system on the math underpinning Beyer’s
work, and both Crist and Beyer were not shy about sharing their
work with the broader horse racing public, despite the fact that do-
ing so took an edge off the personal advantage their systems con-
ferred in the parimutuel pools.

his first win in the Grade 1 event as a trainer.

A Maryland-bred son of Van Nistelrooy who turned 7 in 2016,
Top Striker began his career racing on the flat for owner-breeder
Richard Golden and trainer Rodney Jenkins. He won his debut at
Colonial Downs in June 2012 and an allowance at Delaware Park

Top Striker failed to clear his second allowance in three tries at
Keeneland and Gulfstream Park. In his final start for Matz, Top
Striker won for a $30,000 claiming tag on turf at Gulfstream Park

Upon the recommendation of steeplechase jockey Willie McCar-

The unbeaten record was gone, but the determination clearly re-
mained. The Ballston Spa was her first start in 14 months. Lady Eli
was back.

Six weeks later, Lady Eli was again favored in the Grade 1 Flower
Bowl Invitational at Belmont Park on Oct. 8. This time, Lady Eli led

for $140,000 at the Keeneland sale of 2-year-olds in training in 2014.

Brown had seen clues of Lady Eli’s comeback in the preceding
months. Lady Eli’s performances at Saratoga and in the Flower
Bowl confirmed that her 2015 setbacks were history, leaving a sense
of relief.

“To my eye, watching her train before the Ballston Spa and the
Flower Bowl, this filly has been training as good as ever,” he said in
the winner’s circle after the Flower Bowl.

“There were a lot of different scenarios, some extremely scary,
and the best case was we’d be back heading to the Breeders’ Cup
race as one of the favorites,” he said. “It couldn’t happen to a more
deserving horse, for her to overcome all this.”

The Manhattan, it turns out, would be just about as well as Flint-
shire ran during a 6-year-old campaign that made him the front-
runner for an Eclipse Award as 2016’s champion older male turf
horse. Flintshire had an odd Saratoga meet. Brown decided to use
the Grade 2 Bowling Green on July 30 as a bridge to the Grade 1
Longines Sword Dancer and a fall campaign, but facing just three
rivals, Flintshire had a target on his back for the entire trip, though
rival riders’ best efforts to keep Flintshire boxed in and pinned
down went for naught in the end.

Brown, wanting a more truly run race in the Sword Dancer, used
a pacemaker, Inordinate, who, while coming off the rail to make
room for Flintshire near the top of the homestretch, made contact
with a rival. The tactics caused a minor uproar, but Flintshire had
won his second straight Sword Dancer in impressive fashion.

One reason Fabre and Juddmonte had turned Flintshire into an
international campaigner was to seek out firm ground and avoid
the soft going prevalent in French racing. But soft ground found
Flintshire in the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic in October. It was
black and white, really: Ectot, another French import, skipped over
a boggy Belmont course, setting a slow pace while leading from
start to finish. Flintshire struggled from the beginning of the race,
the dead, tricky going blunting his brilliance. He checked in a well-

beaten second. DRF.com

The Turf marked Highland Reel’s only start in North America.
He did plenty of running around the rest of the world.

Highland Reel’s season began in Dubai, where he was fourth
in the Group 1 Sheema Classic, and then moved on to Hong Kong,
where he finished eighth in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

Much closer to his trainer Aidan O’Brien’s home base in Ireland,
Highland Reel reemerged in June to finish second in the Hardwicke
Stakes at Ascot before landing the Group 1 King George VI and
Queen Elizabeth Stakes there.

After a fine second to the very high-class Postponed in the Group
1 Juddmonte International, Highland Reel made his first start in
Ireland since September 2015 and failed to produce his best when
seventh in a strong edition of the Irish Champion Stakes. But he
roared back into form finishing second to stablemate Found in the
Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. A month later, he won the Turf, and five
weeks after that Highland Reel was just touched off in the Group 1
Hong Kong Vase after being forced into a fast middle pace.

In a nine-start, March-through-December campaign on three
continents, Highland Reel wound up with a 2-4-0 record in 2016.
The 5-year-old horse made nearly $5.5 million on the season, all for
owners, Michael Tabor and Susan Magnier. The Ireland-bred High-

out of the Unbridled’s Song mare Unbridled Melody, was bred by
WinStar Farm and was withdrawn from a yearling sale in 2012. He
campaigned in 2016 for WinStar, the Wachtel Stable, and Gary Bar-
ber.

A robust dark bay with an eye-catching blaze and a couple of
socks, Tourist had shown talent from the start but really found his
niche when Mott switched him from dirt to turf in February 2014.
That summer, he won the Sir Cat at Saratoga over the classy Ring
Weekend and then stayed on gamely at a 1 1/4-mile distance that is
farther than his best when second in the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes.

Tourist ended his 3-year-old campaign with the first of his three
starts in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, and unlike in 2016, his trip was
disastrous. Tourist broke from post 13, and Mott thought the horse
might be headed for the Santa Anita parking lot, so wide did he race
on the first turn.

It took forever to get Tourist right in 2015, and he didn’t even
make his seasonal debut until September. He was a fine third in the
Shadwell Turf Mile in October, but by the time the Breeders’ Cup
Mile came around, the Keeneland course had gone too far over to
the soft side for the firm turf-loving Tourist.

Give a patient Hall of Famer like Mott enough time to sculpt a
horse with Tourist’s ability, and something is bound to go right

Turning for home, Finest City took over without urging, but
when Wavell Avenue loomed to her outside, Smith had to go to a

“She’s pretty great,” an elated Tyler Seltzer said afterward on the

Tyler is the son of Wayne Seltzer. The family sold their food-and-

Kendrick Carmouche aboard.

“She really gutted it out all the way to the line and just got there
in time,” said Morley. “What a thrill.”

In the seven-furlong Ballerina, sent away at 10-1 in a talent-laden
field of 10, she got a perfect outside trip under John Velazquez and
overtook Carina Mia and By the Moon in deep stretch to win by a
half-length.

“I wanted to wait until the quarter pole and let her finish from
there, and it worked out good,” said Velazquez.

Haveyougoneaway then made her final career start as the 7-2
second choice among a field of 13 in the Nov. 5 Breeders’ Cup Filly
& Mare Sprint at Santa Anita. It was a disappointing conclusion
to an otherwise terrific year, as she raced in mid-pack throughout
the seven-furlong race and finished seventh, beaten 4 1/2 lengths
by the victorious Finest City.

TEQUILA

100% DE AGAVE AZUL

¡ORIGEN DE TRADICIONES!

Imagine traveling to a new place with only hope in your heart and determination
to succeed. That is the story of a group of remarkable individuals, the Indianos.
Their accomplishments and legacy testify to their courageous attitude,
entrepreneurial spirit and selfless heart. Indianos is the colloquial name given to
the Spanish emigrant who left in search of better life in the Americas, they are
promoters of culture and good values, which have given origin to our traditions.
Tequila Indianos is the forging and interpretation of the strength and love of the
farm worker combined with centuries of rich history, and in perfect harmony with
nature. It represents the essence and spirit of the Mexican craftsmanship, a symbol
of ancestry, which converges the past, present and future, forging an
extraordinary tequila to be shared around the table with the spirit of friendship,
love and brotherhood.
Tequila Indianos is made from 100% Agave Azul. Our fields are situated in a
privileged land, in the heart of the state of Jalisco. It is a volcanic region rich in
minerals, warm temperatures, calm winds, where the ode of birds, abundant
sunshine and pristine rain water nourishes the agave plants.
Tequila Indianos goes beyond a temporary trend, or what is popular for only a
moment. It is unsurpassed in quality, and is inspired by outstanding stories and
human experiences from around the world. Pursuing excellence is our duty, and
evident in all that we do, and pays homage to entrepreneurs, migrants and those
who worked so hard and continue to strive to make this world a better place.

“In 2015, he started out very good but he had some issues we had
to deal with and he tailed off,” Delacour said.

In 2016, A. P. Indian got better as the season progressed.
He was placed first in the Decathlon when the winner, Delta
Bluesman, was disqualified for interference. He repeated in the
LeVine Memorial before venturing to New York for the Grade 3,
$400,000 Belmont Sprint Championship, which he won by a head.
From there it was on to Saratoga, where A. P. Indian won the Al-
fred Vanderbilt Handicap, the first Grade 1 victory for both horse
and trainer. He doubled down on that win by taking the Grade 1
Priority One Jets Forego on the Travers undercard.
Delacour planned to run A. P. Indian back in the Vosburgh at Bel-
mont, but changed plans due to wet track conditions and rerouted
him to Keeneland, where A. P. Indian proved a nose best in the
Grade 2 Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix.
“The most important thing this year is that he ran at his best all
year,” Delacour said. “That we were able to do that and never back
off him.”
